Chapter 53
Paula sat on the edge of the cliff top, looking out over the waves that crashed against the cliff face below. She leaned her head back, letting the sea breeze sting her skin and blow her hair wildly about her face while her thoughts drifted to the time she and Severus came here, they’d hunted and feasted on shoshoi and pheasant.
Thick wads of stagnum moss were wrapped around her forearms, warming the cores embedded inside and strengthening her for the next healing. She did not intend to be so weakened again.
Originally she was only going to read the woman and man and then decide whether or not their souls could be healed, but the woman’s soul was so close to the surface, so desperate for release, either into the after world, or to be healed and begin living again. Paula was unable to leave her waiting.
When she arrived back at the abandoned storefront that disguised St. Mungo’s from the none-magical community, Remus and Kingsley were waiting for her.
Both let out a sigh of relief when she appeared.
“You smell of the ocean.” Remus blurted out without thinking.
Paula smiled at him. “That is because I was near the ocean Mr Lupin.” She placed a hand against his cheek. “Go home to your wife and child, enjoy them Mr Lupin. They need you.” She did not add ’while you can’.
Remus stared at her for a moment then shifted his eyes to Kingsley.
“Go on Remus, I will contact you as soon as there is any news.”
“Thank you Paula.” Remus said, taking hold of her shoulders and kissing her cheek. He turned and disappeared.
When Kingsley and Paula re entered the room where Augusta, Alice and Frank were, the elder woman immediately stood and approached Paula,
pulling the younger woman into a tight embrace and holding her there for several minutes, unable to speak, incapable of saying all the things she wanted to say.
“I feel it lady, you have no need to say it.” Paula told her as she gently extracted herself from the woman’s arms and made her way towards Frank Longbottom.
He in turn twitched and spasmed, his jaw ticking slightly at her attention.
As with Alice, she knelt and cupped his cheeks to gain eye contact. “Hello Frank, me som Paula.” (My name is Paula)
This time Kingsley, along with Augusta and Alice watched attentively, completely absorbed as Paula spoke similar words to what she’d said to Alice. She removed something from a pouch on her waist and, using her fingers to force the mans jaw open, pressed something inside his mouth and held his jaw shut as she continued to speak softly to him in Romane. As the Passion flower and ginseng on his tongue dissolved and trickled down his throat, the twitching and spasms eased and Paula was able to release his jaw and cup his face once more. She rested her forehead on his and basically repeated what she had done with Alice.
This time the spectators saw a whisper of silvery white substance drifting between Paula and Frank. It shimmered as it hovered, forming and reforming constantly as Paula spoke words that none of them understood. Frank’s face took on a relaxed, almost slack appearance until the shimmering matter appeared to be sucked back into the mans being and Paula and frank shed silent tears.
“Nai more tugney beshor.“ Paula said quietly to Frank and Alice Longbottom. (No more sorrowful years)
When the room once more became so full of medical staff wanting to know what was going on and how the Longbottom’s had suddenly regained their mental faculties, Paula quietly, and tiredly, slipped through the door and headed for the exit.
The following day it was reported in the Daily Prophet that Frank and Alice Longbottom, after a long incarceration in St. Mungo’s, had been moved to an undisclosed location after it was discovered they were no longer disturbed mentally and were now being cared for by relatives.
When Voldemort discovered this news he was incensed. He wanted to know how it had come about that two completely mindless people had suddenly recovered after so many years. He knew it was too much of a coincidence that they’d both regained their faculties on the same day.
“I believe the Gypsy is involved with their recovery my Lord.” Snape offered. “It mentions on page four that a young woman with long dark hair and dark complexion visited them yesterday, but disappeared shortly before anyone could question her. The only witnesses, Mrs Longbottom Snr, auror Kingsley Shacklebolt, and the werewolf Remus Lupin have also disappeared from the public eye.”
Voldemort was of a mind that Snape was right, but that did not make him feel any happier about the situation.
“The Gypsy, can you still contact her? Do you know where she is?”
“I have heard no mention of her since Dumbledore’s death, though there was a rumour she was present at the funeral. Other than that, I have no idea where she went.” Snape answered truthfully.
“The bitch must be staying somewhere, either in the vicinity of Hogwarts, or she is staying with that blasted Order of the Phoenix.”
Snape kept his mouth shut. Paula had already told him she was near, but he was not about to reveal that information to Voldemort.
“Wherever she is my Lord, she is obviously well hidden. Do you perceive her as a threat to your plans?”
“No Snape I do not. Just because she has a few fancy tricks up her sleeve does not make her a serious threat. She took me… us, by surprise last time, nothing more. Though if you should happen to locate her whereabouts, or come across her, I want her dealt with immediately. No second chances for her do you understand? She made a mockery of us all and made it clear she was not interested in helping our cause. That is more than enough to place her on our list of those to be eradicated. I am sure you agree with me.”
“Most certainly my Lord. The woman has proved to be something of a irritant. I will keep a look out for her.” Severus knew Paula had more than tricks up her sleeves.
“Leave, I have more pressing matters that require my attention.” Voldemort dismissed Snape.
Severus paced the length of his office. Only it didn’t feel like his office and he doubted it ever would. True he was Headmaster now, but he didn’t want to be Headmaster.
His eyes strayed for the umpteenth time to the portrait of Albus Dumbledore.
“Why the hell won’t you wake up old man? It’s been weeks, you should be looking at me and telling me to calm down. You should be gazing at me with that bloody ridiculous blue eyed sparkle of yours and telling me what I should be doing next. You forced me to abide by my oath to Narcissa and then you left me to fend for myself. Now look where it’s got me, look where it’s got the wizarding world. He’s taken over the Ministry, this school. Mad-Eye is dead Albus, dead, and you sleep as though all is well with the world.” He glared at the sleeping portrait for a few more minutes, then slunk into the nearest chair and buried his face in his hands. “I despair of the whole miserable situation Albus. I am more detested now then ever I was before. I don’t care what the Prophet says, I am the one who murdered you, and everyone knows it. They watch me you know, the staff, the students. They watch me with accusing eyes and it is the most horrible of feelings. I know the look because I see it each time I look in the mirror. I am a condemned man living on borrowed time, the only trouble is I do not know when my time will be up, I can see no future for any of us.”
The portrait of Albus Dumbledore continued to sleep peacefully. No one could figure out why he wouldn’t awaken, it had never happened this way before. The portraits of past Headmasters always woke shortly after death, ready to advise the next in line, but Albus had not woken for the short tenure that Minerva MacGonagall had acted as Headmistress so Severus knew he was not ignoring him personally.
Standing and accio’ing his cape, Severus made his way down the spiral staircase and across the main hall. He left the castle and headed for the stables where Riley seemed to like frequenting most nights. Severus believed the beast had gone soft during his stay here and missed the warmth and comfort of the stables. Severus just liked the fact he could talk to the beast without having an accusatory glare thrown his way.
He’d spied him one evening as the beast glided majestically past his tower window. Out of curiosity, he watched him land and disappear round the back of Hagrids deserted, half burned hut then went to investigate. From then on he went to the stables most evenings to see Riley, and Riley in turn would give him images of Paula. Sometimes the images showed her hunting, others showed her practicing defence. The last time this happened Severus got to see Paula emerge naked from a small waterfall and it set his pulse racing. He needed to see her, even though he had no idea where she was. When he asked Riley where Paula was the creature was only too pleased to take him.
