Harry actually found himself looking forward to his date
with Draco, and he was rather disappointed when the next Hogsmeade trip on
March first was cancelled. They all
figured it had something to do with what had happened to Katie Bell.
Draco suggested they go on a little picnic somewhere in the
castle, or outside if the weather was nice.
Harry agreed, and they decided to pick a place after their Apparation
lesson. Harry was getting better at
Apparating. He might not have been
ending up in the wooden circle on the floor, but at least he wasn’t landing on
people anymore.
March first was Ron’s birthday. He woke up early to open the small pile of
presents that had been delivered by house elves during the night. When Harry woke up he dug through his trunk
to find his present and give it to Ron.
All Harry could think about was his upcoming date with
Draco. He probably wouldn’t be able to
Apparate during the lesson because he couldn’t concentrate. He wasn’t even paying attention to Ron who
had found a box of chocolates that had mysteriously found its way to Harry’s
bed sometime before Christmas.
Harry didn’t notice that there was anything wrong until he
turned to ask Ron if he was coming to breakfast. Draco was seated in front of the redhead
waving a hand in front of his face. Ron
had a dreamy look in his eyes.
“Ron? Are you all right?” Draco
asked with concern.
Harry saw the box of chocolates and recognized it
immediately. “Oh no!” he cried out.
“What’s wrong?” Draco turned and asked.
“Those chocolates…
They were an anonymous gift I got before Christmas. I must’ve pulled them out when I was getting
Ron’s present. I’ll bet you anything
they’re spiked with a love potion!”
Sure enough, Ron started going on and on about a girl named
Romilda Vane. “What do we do?” Draco
asked.
Harry thought for a moment.
He first thought about taking Ron to James, but decided against it. James was teaching two classes and taking
care of a baby with help from Lucius.
They needed all the sleep they could get.
“Let’s take him to Slughorn,” Harry said.
“Will Romilda be there?” Ron asked with a hopeful look.
“Yes,” Harry lied.
“I’m going to introduce you to her.”
Harry and Draco each took one of Ron’s arms and guided him
down to Professor Slughorn’s office.
Harry knocked on the door, and Slughorn answered moments later still in
his dressing gown.
“Harry, what brings you here so early?” Slughorn asked.
Harry quickly explained the situation. “Can you help him?”
Slughorn ushered them in.
“Of course my boy!”
Harry and Draco led Ron over to a chair by the
fireplace. “Where’s Romilda?” he asked
looking around expectantly.
“She’ll be here in a moment,” Slughorn answered and poured a
potion into a glass. “Here, have a drink
while you wait,” he said handing it to Ron.
Ron took the potion and downed it. He was back to his normal self in
minutes. “What happened?” he asked. “How’d I get here?”
Harry told him what happened while Slughorn poured drinks
and handed them out. Ron gulped the
contents of his goblet, and then almost immediately fell to the floor and
started seizing. Slughorn was too
shocked to move.
Harry knew there was no time to run for help. He started searching through Slughorn’s
drawers for a bezoar.
As soon as he found one he quickly shoved it down Ron’s throat. Ron went still for a second, and then let out
a loud gasp and his body went limp.
When Harry was satisfied that Ron would be all right he ran
to fetch Professor McGonagall. Ron was
taken straight to the Hospital Wing and Dumbledore and James questioned Harry
and Slughorn.
“Where did you get this?” Dumbledore asked Slughorn,
referring to the bottle of poisoned brandy.
“I bought it months ago,” Slughorn answered. “I was planning on giving it to you for
Christmas, but it must’ve slipped my mind.”
“I’d wager the necklace was meant for you too,” James
commented.
“I’ve come to that conclusion as well,” Dumbledore
nodded. “But it would seem that luck has
been on my side. Harry, you’re free to
go. I’m sure you’re anxious to go see
how Ron is doing.”
Harry nodded and headed straight to the Hospital Wing. He found Draco sitting outside the double
doors with Hermione and Ginny. “How is
he?” Harry asked as he took a seat beside Draco.
“No one will tell us anything,” Draco sighed.
They waited quietly, not even going down to dinner, until
the doors were finally opened and Madame Pomfrey
assured them their friend would be fine.
He was going to need to stay in the Hospital Wing for a week or so
though.
Harry looked at Draco and frowned. “I’m sorry we missed our date.”
Draco shrugged. “It’s
not your fault. We can do it tomorrow.”
“All right,” Harry agreed.
“Tomorrow then.”
Ron was still unconscious, but they stayed with him until
the rest of Ron’s family arrived. Harry,
Draco, and Hermione excused themselves and went back to Gryffindor
Tower. The common room was empty except for Cormac
McLaggen. He’d somehow heard what had happened
and wanted to point out to Harry that someone would need to take Ron’s place as
Keeper on the House Quidditch team.
Harry wanted to tell him no, but Cormac had been second best during
tryouts.
Harry regretted agreeing the next morning when Cormac
cornered him at breakfast to discuss strategy.
Lavender also came over to ask why no one had told her what had happened
to her Won Won.
Draco pushed his way past both of them. “All right, that’s enough,” he said
forcefully. “Harry and I have plans, so
if you two don’t mind, bugger off!”
Harry couldn’t help but smile as Draco took his hand and led
him out of the Great Hall. “Thanks,” he
said.
Draco grinned. “We
Malfoys are very protective and possessive of our mates. Keep that in mind while you’re thinking.”
“So where are we going?” Harry asked.
“Well, first we’re going for a walk around the lake.”
Harry followed Draco outside. It was a little chilly, but the sky was clear
and sunny. Draco took Harry’s hand and
walked close beside him. The closeness
was nice. It wasn’t like being with Ron
and Hermione. They were Harry’s best
friends, but this felt different.
They were halfway around the lake before either of them said
anything. “Have you seen Snape lately?”
Harry asked.
“You mean Uncle Sev,” Draco corrected him. “And yes, I visited him Friday
afternoon. He’s miserable, but I think
he’ll survive. Sirius is taking good
care of him.”
“Is it a boy or a girl?”
“Uncle Sev wants to be surprised. Lysandra thinks he’ll need to be induced.”
“I can’t imagine not wanting to know,” Harry sighed as he
gazed out over the water toward the castle.
“I can,” Draco said.
“It makes the moment more special somehow I guess.”
“Do you see yourself having kids?” Harry asked. The question just popped out of his mouth,
surprising him.
Draco was quiet for a moment. “Yeah, I do, someday anyway. I need to graduate school and get a job
first. Julian is cute, but can you
imagine taking care of him while trying to do homework?”
Harry shook his head.
“Doing homework and squeezing Quidditch practice is hard enough. And I think McLaggen is going to make being
Quidditch Captain even harder.”
Draco nodded. “The
boy is a brute. I don’t think you
should’ve let him fill in as Keeper.”
“What else could I do?” Harry sighed. “He was second best. I have to do what’s fair.”
Before either boy knew it they were back at the castle. “Wait here,” Draco instructed when they were
in the front hall. The blond headed to
the Great Hall, and came back minutes later with a basket.
“What’s this?” Harry asked.
“You’ll see,” Draco grinned.
“Follow me.”
Harry followed Draco up to the seventh floor. His curiosity was eating at him, but he didn’t
ask where they were going. Soon they
were standing in the hallway where the Room of Requirement was located.
Harry watched as Draco paced back and forth in front of the
blank wall three times. Then the door
materialized, and Draco pulled Harry inside.
Since the room was supposed to accommodate the seeker’s
needs, Harry didn’t know what to expect.
The place looked like a small common room with a lit fireplace, a couch,
and a large round rug on the floor.
Draco took the basket and settled on the rug, motioning for
Harry to join him. Harry cautiously sat
down beside the blond. He half expected
something to happen. Draco started
pulling dishes of food out of the basket.
“So you just wanted to have a picnic in here?” Harry asked.
“Yes,” Draco nodded.
“Why? There are
dozens of places we could’ve gone,” Harry pointed out.
“This is more private,” Draco grinned. “We won’t be interrupted in here.”
Harry suddenly felt a little nervous and glanced at the
couch in the corner. “You mean, you
wanted to… to… shag me?”
Draco laughed. “I
certainly wouldn’t mind that, but somehow I don’t think you’re up for it just
yet.”
Harry frowned. It
hadn’t even crossed his mind yet. He was
still upset with Draco for cornering him in the shed back at the Burrow.
Draco grabbed Harry’s hand and gave it a light squeeze. “Don’t worry, I’m not going to force you into
anything. I promise.”
Harry felt slightly reassured and started looking over all
the food Draco had brought. All of his
favorites were there.
The boys ate, talking a little between bites. Harry slowly became more comfortable and
actually enjoyed the privacy. It kind of
reminded him of all the times they’d met in secret, only this time it wasn’t
the middle of the night, and they didn’t have to avoid being seen together.
Harry had thought going on this date would help him make up
his mind, but he was more confused than ever.
He really liked Draco, and Draco got along well with Ron and
Hermione. He wasn’t exactly popular with
the other Gryffindors, but they were getting used to him. Neither James nor Lucius objected to their
sons being together. There was no
logical reason for Harry to not want to be with Draco, but he still had a
nagging feeling in the pit of his stomach.
When the boys finished they cleaned up and headed back to Gryffindor
Tower to work on homework. Harry groaned when he spotted Lavender
approaching them. “Shouldn’t you be
talking to Ron?” Harry asked when she started asking him questions and talking
about her relationship with Ron.
“I would, but every time I go to see him he’s asleep.”
“That’s no reason to bother Harry,” Draco commented.
Lavender gave the blond a dirty look, but stormed off without
another word. Both Harry and Draco shook
their heads and continued on their way back to the common room. “I honestly don’t know what he ever saw in
her,” Draco said as he took out his books.
“Me either,” Harry agreed.
Harry was right about Cormac giving him trouble. The boy thought he knew everything, and
constantly bossed the entire team around during practices. Harry had to keep reminding Cormac that he
was the team Captain.
He hoped Cormac would behave during their game against Hufflepuff,
but that didn’t happen. Cormac spent the
entire game shouting orders and criticisms at his teammates. In fact, he was so busy yelling at everyone
else that he failed to guard the hoops. Draco
sat in the stands wishing he could hex Cormac off the face of the planet. They were losing, and it was his fault.
Harry flew down to yell at Cormac yet again as Cormac yanked
a bat away from one of the Beaters and hit a Bludger. Draco held his breath as the ball flew right
at Harry and cracked him in the skull.
Harry’s body went limp and fell to the ground.
The game was stopped for a moment so Harry could be taken
off the field and carried to the Hospital Wing.
Draco looked calm on the outside, but inside he was seething with
rage. The brute had hurt his Harry, and
that was not acceptable. The brute was
going to pay.
