Chapter 53: Time to Go
As Hermione apparated to the Potter's back yard she fell to the ground in a heap. Her arms crossed in front of her chest as she rocked back and forth. Her tears fell, as she questioned why she hadn't splinched herself. Trying to control her feelings of hatred and pain wouldn't happen soon enough. What should she do now? She had truly cemented herself as Dumbledore's enemy after tonight. Hermione did not regret anything that had happened though. The old man's threats had to be dealt with and this was the only way that she knew how. Was she truly like Tom now? Was she more evil than light?
As she sobbed, the cold night air burned her lungs. She could hardly feel the arms that went around her pulling her back against a hard chest. "It's fine Hermione. Your safe now."
Hermione knew that Sirius was there, protecting her like he always said he would. Why did it somehow not feel right? The pulling back and forth of her feelings between Sirius and Tom was ripping her own soul apart. Never in her wildest dreams could she have imagined her time traveling bringing her to this point: being in love with two very different men. Closing her eyes, her breathing slowed down and she melted into Sirius's arms. She didn't want to admit that maybe, just maybe that old bastard Dumbledore might be right. Choosing Sirius over Tom might prove to be the sensible thing. Her battle worn heart realized that deep down inside, Tom would always be her greatest love. There were no easy answers at the moment. All she wanted to do was go upstairs, hold her precious son close, and fall asleep. She was so tired and magically drained.
Hermione awoke in the middle of the night. She was alone in bed, but could hear the quiet breathing of baby Thomas in his crib. The moon shone brightly through the curtains, and she wondered where Lupin was tonight. She still felt so tired thinking back to her encounter with Albus Dumbledore. How she had ever found the strength to confront him like she did? But, knowing what he had done to her, Tom, and the baby had given her enough reason. In her heart she knew she had to find a way to go to Tom. Somehow this whole time period needed changing or her journey through time would have all been a waste.
Hermione grabbed on to her Eternal Flame tattoo. She wondered if she could still connect to Tom by just meditating and making contact with the tattoo.
"Please Tom, can't you feel that I need you?"
Hermione was ready to leave the Potters and live with Tom. She couldn't influence him at all by hiding from him. Tom still wanted her and that had been very evident when she had seen him last. Baby Thomas would be coming with her, because there was no way that she would not have her son with her at all times. They both would be safer with Tom, than possibly being at the mercy of Dumbledore. She had cemented the old wizard as her enemy last night. Even with the curse she had placed on him, he would find a way to get even with her. Dumbledore had clearly shown her he wanted Tom and baby Thomas dead.
Hermione gripped her arm tightly willing Tom to reach out to her. Where was he? Had something happened to him? Had he given up on her and decided she wasn't worth fighting for anymore? Maybe all he wanted now was his son, just as she had originally feared after Thomas's birth. Her arms fell to her side. An ugly red mark remained on her arm where she had gripped so forcefully. Tomorrow she would go looking again for Tom. He needed to know what she had done to promote Dumbledore's hatred for them. Even though, Hermione didn't regret what she had done, she knew she had stepped up the intensity of the wizarding war. She fell back on her pillow, finally falling asleep, once again holding her tattoo close to her chest.
The Dark Lord grumpily rolled out of bed almost stepping on his familiar. Nagini scurried out from under his feet quickly, as if she even knew that her master was in a bad mood. She curled up in the corner hissing quietly at his aggressiveness. Something had happened to Hermione last night. He had felt the surge of magic coming from her. He was aggravated that she had possibly been in danger and there had been nothing that he could do to help her. Why was she being so stubborn? If she had only been more compliant, he wouldn't be heading off to France today.
Changing into clean robes and packing a small duffle, he stormed out of his chambers. He rushed towards the dining room looking for his most dedicated Death Eaters.
The house elves assigned to him from Malfoy Manor tried to serve him breakfast, but Voldemort shoved them away with a flick of his wrist. Plates of eggs and toast went flying across the room. Malfoy and Snape stood immediately from the table leaving their breakfast, and came and bowed at their master's feet.
"Master, what can we do for you this morning?" Lucius asked in a quiet voice not lifting his head. Snape stayed close to Lucius not saying a word.
"Both of you stand." The timbre of his voice relayed his mood. Lucius and Severus stood and waited for The Dark Lord to speak.
"I'm going away on business, for no more than twenty-four hours. I want you to stay here, just in case Hermione tries to reach out."
He wasn't sure why he was worried about this, but he couldn't take the chance that maybe, just maybe, this would be the day when Hermione and his son would come and join him for good.
"What should we do if she does comes searching for you?" Lucius cautiously asked. He took a step back not wanting to be too close to his enraged master.
Glaring at both men he gritted his teeth and took a deep breath, "You'll keep her here of course. Do not let her leave!"
Both men nodded, "Of course my Lord, as you wish." They stood there, waiting, looking at The Dark Lord.
Feeling more irritated at them staring at him, he waved them off, "Go finish your breakfast!" His followers turned and speedily complied as Voldemort apparated away for his day of "fun".
Hermione awoke with a horrid headache and an irritable baby. Nothing seemed to help calm Thomas this morning. She'd changed his nappy, fed and burped him and he still kept fussing. Hermione's nerves were shot and she was ready to go forward with her plan of packing and leaving.
Taking her cranky baby, she went downstairs to face the rest of the household. Entering the kitchen she received two "good mornings" and one ugly stare, of course coming from James. What was wrong with that man? She wanted to shake him and tell him the truth that she was still here to try and save his and Lily's lives. She most especially wanted to prevent Harry from becoming an orphan and having to live with the awful Muggle family the Dursleys.
She met James's eyes as he looked over his copy of The Daily Prophet. The animosity there was matched right back from Hermione's stare. She was tired of being bullied by this man. Snape had been right about Harry's father being an arrogant prat. He strutted around the house as she assumed he had at Hogwarts.
Lily put a cup of tea and a plate full of bacon and eggs in front of Hermione. The sight of the steaming food only nauseated her, but she thanked Lily politely.
"How did you sleep Hermione?" Lily always the polite one inquired.
"It was a restless one, but poor Thomas has had a hard morning." Lily seemed to listen with sympathy as she had also had a few harsh mornings with Harry and his colic.
Hermione noticed Sirius hovering near by as if he wanted to talk to her. He sipped his black coffee examining her. She felt restless having everyone staring at her like that.
"OK," she slammed her hand down on the table. "What do you want to know? I'm tired of being gaped at by some of you and glared at by others." She looked directly at James as she concluded speaking. He folded his newspaper putting it down, and sat up straight in his chair.
"What happened last night?" James asked her, "Dumbledore looked greatly disturbed when he came back after your…chat." Sirius clenched his jaw and narrowed his eyes at his best mate. Hermione could see that there had been words between the two of them and the tension could clearly be felt.
Taking a sip of her tea, she put the cup down not so gently, "We talked, or I should more accurately say, we argued and then I left."
"Does this have to do with your Death Eater boyfriend?" James asked maliciously.
Lily gasped next to him, "James Potter! Stop harassing her this instant."
"Well, what else would they have to talk about? Clearly we are at war against He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named and his Death Eaters." James leaned forward as he talked. "If Dumbledore sees Hermione as an enemy, then we should too."
"That's enough mate!" Sirius said. "There is more to this story than what we know."
"And there is where the problem lies, right Hermione? You're not willing to tell us the truth."
Hermione stood pushing her chair away from the table. "I'm leaving today. Thank you Lily for your hospitality and thank you Sirius for your support." Holding Thomas against her she turned once more to the occupants at the table, "James, I would never harm you or your family, but I can't stay here with you and your vehement accusations. I can't tell you anything right now except to keep Sirius as your Secret Keeper and stay safe. That is all that you deserve to know right now."
As Hermione left, Sirius growled and slammed his chair against the table running after her.
Lily got up too, angrily clearing away the untouched breakfast from the table. James pulled out The Daily Prophet again, "It needed to be said Lils. Dumbledore said she is a danger to all of us. I'm only trying to protect my family."
Lily threw her dishrag in the sink and turned to face her husband. "Sometimes you are as big of an egotistical ass as Dumbledore!" Lily bolted from the kitchen leaving a bewildered James alone to ponder what she'd said.
Tom looked around the French Village Baume-les-Messieurs, in the Jura. The stunning village was nestled amidst the cliffs. He was close to the Benedictine abbey. He only had a half-mile to walk to find the rural chateau where he would find Flamina. The elegant chateau had a formal courtyard and water moat. A superb marble fountain stood mid courtyard. He stepped up to the large, front double doors and they swung open to let him enter. The marble tiled entryway led to the double staircases. Tom assumed that one of the flights of stairs would lead him to the goddess. The large structure was quiet, with the only sound being his own footsteps leading him along. Each room he looked in had large stylish beds and furnishings. The only problem was each room was entirely empty with no sign of the flamboyant Flamina. Coming to the end of the hallway stood one last room, with grandiose doors with gold inlay on the intricately cut design around the edges. The doors swung open to a bedroom the size of a great hall. There in the middle, lay the very stunning and very naked goddess.
"I thought you would never get here. Come Voldemort, and pleasure me."
Stepping in the room, the doors swung shut. Thus sealing his fate, and his night with the seductress, now sprawled in all of her glory before him.
