“Hermione, are you sure we’ll be safe here?” Ron asked as they tromped through the Forbidden Forest. He carried the locket stowed inside a small black carrying bag to avoid being contaminated with the horcrux. Hermione was holding a mobile privacy charm around them so they wouldn’t be detected.
“For the last time Ronald, yes, we are safe,” Hermione huffed in exasperation. “Hogwarts is the only place with protections strong enough to resist fiendfyre and keep us hidden while we use it. We have friends in the forest. Celeste and Alex are taking care of the Carrows and Melody and Severus are redirecting everyone so we have a smooth entrance. We have Harry’s cloak so no one will see us anyway.”
“Still, this seems like a risky move.”
“It is Ron,” Harry said softly. “But we need to destroy this locket and Malfoy is the only one who can do it.”
“I bet Dumbledore could,” Ron said.
“He doesn’t have his normal wand anymore, remember?” Hermione asked. “Severus could do it too but Draco has had the most experience in controlling it. Besides, we need to start figuring out a way to get the younger years out and the best way to do that is from the inside.”
“This is mad!” Ron hissed.
“You said that already.” Harry gave a wry smile and then froze as the sounds of hoof beats hit his ears. He started to draw his wand but Hermione stopped him with a small shake of her head and a hand on his arm.
“Firenze?” She called.
“It is I, child of Nemesis,” Firenze said softly as he stepped out from behind a tree.
“Oh Firenze, am I glad to see you,” Hermione said, her body sagging in relief.
The centaur gave her a warm smile. “You look much better than you did a month ago.”
Hermione grinned. “I’m sure I do. Thank you again, you know, for letting me ride on your back.”
“It was the least I could do. I would have taken your mate as well if he would have accepted it.”
“He wouldn’t have. He was too worried about me.”
Firenze nodded his head and then looked to the stars. “The time is upon us. Under the cloak. You will be flanked by Hagrid’s brother and a few of my brethren who have had a change of heart.”
The three did exactly as the centaur bade them to do and walked as quickly as they could to the edge of the forest. It was extremely awkward, Ron’s tall frame and Hermione’s much shorter causing a stilted gait. She’d cast a disillusion on them to keep their feet from being too noticeable. When the forest cleared, they held their breath. A dozen Death Eaters stood guard at the edge while a cloaked figure bent over the marble tomb of Dumbledore’s doppelganger. The marble was cracked and a few scant moments later, Voldemort’s high pitched laugh rang through the air.
“I have you now!” He cried and laughed again. Then he motioned for his guards to come with him. They disapparated away with several loud pops.
A few minutes later, Ron let out a heavy breath. “Well, that’s check then, isn’t it?”
Hermione couldn’t help but laugh at his analogy. “It isn’t check mate for a while yet. Come on, let’s get the king out of danger, shall we?”
The trek inside was mostly uneventful. Firenze walked calmly beside them and was given entrance by a sneering Death Eater. He wasn’t wearing a mask but his hood was too low over his eyes to identify him. Once inside, they were struck with how deathly quiet everything was. Dinner was being served and yet, not one sound escaped the great hall.
“No talking aloud,” Melody murmured when they stopped out in the hall. “Thank you Firenze. I’ll take it from here.”
Firenze gave a low bow and clopped off to his quarters. Melody did a quick about face and started marching up the stairs. They were obviously expected to follow. She walked with purpose, glaring at anyone who dared give her a second glance. She’d obviously learned a few things from Severus. They made it to the seventh floor before they encountered anyone of note.
“Aye, what are you up here for?” An oily voice called out.
Melody sneered. “I’m up here because I am supposed to be. Why the hell are you here Amycus?”
“Just catching a few strays.” Amycus’s teeth were yellow and sinister looking as he grinned wickedly.
“Do it somewhere else,” Melody hissed with narrowed eyes.
“Just because you’re Snape’s play thing doesn’t mean you can order me around,” Amycus growled.
“Fine,” Melody said, her voice deathly calm. “How about this? Get lost or I’ll make sure you’ll never be able to enjoy another woman as long as you live.”
Amycus paled, his eyes widened. He obviously knew Melody would back up her threat. He gave a slight nod and legged it down the stairs.
“I knew hexing him with impotency over the summer would change his attitude,” Melody said smugly and marched over to the hall where the ROR was located. She drew back and cast a large knocking spell.
The door drew back an inch or so before one warm brown eye could be seen. Suddenly, it flew open and a pale arm motioned them all inside. Once the door slammed shut, Ginny grabbed Melody in a bear hug. “Are they here?”
“Take a look for yourself.” Melody chuckled and motioned behind her.
Harry immediately whipped off the cloak and cancelled the disillusion charm. He ran to Ginny, picked her up, and planted the most scorching kiss that Hermione had ever witnessed on the red head’s lips. Hermione caught Ron tensing up a moment before muttering to himself and turning around. She bit back a laugh when a flurry of blonde hair attacked him. Luna had launched herself into Ron’s arms and was proceeding to squeeze the life out of him.
“Awww,” Hermione sighed while taking in Ron’s flaming cheeks.
“Cute, aren’t they?” Melody asked.
“Very,” Hermione replied as she took in the ROR’s design. It looked like a giant tree house with multicolored hammocks strung from the ceiling and a balcony that ran around the room. All of the house colors were flown off the balcony, all except Slytherin that is. They appeared to be alone, with the exception of Ginny and Luna but there had to be at least a dozen or more hammocks here.
“Amazing isn’t it?” Ginny asked. “Neville thought it up. Draco and I figured that this was the only place we could hide everyone safely. Neville was the first one I brought here. He was the first the Carrows picked on too. Anyway, it’s been expanding ever since.”
“It’s brilliant,” Ron exclaimed as he looked around in awe. Then his face went stony. “Draco?”
“She’s one of the ones who knows Ron,” Hermione reassured him.
“Luna’s the other then?”
Luna shook her head. “I just feel it.”
“And we are so glad you can,” Melody said. “They should be here any moment. Let me go and get them and we’ll get started.”
“Them?” Ron squeaked.
His question was answered as Snape and Draco entered regally with two wolves at their side. The animals morphed into human form and launched themselves at the trio. Harry and Hermione were knocked down in a tangle of limbs while Ron ducked and ran out of the way. Hermione laughed as Alex swung her around a few times and set her down in front of Severus, who grabbed her in an uncharacteristic bear hug. Harry was put down beside her as soon as their embrace ended. The men tentatively shook hands, an air of understanding passing between them.
Draco waited a few beats before he jerked Hermione sideways and into his arms. He inhaled her sweet scent and relaxed for the first time in a long while. “You have it then?”
“We do,” Ron said grumpily. He stomped across the room and flung the bag at Draco, who deftly snatched it out of the air.
“Perfect. I’ll destroy it now. We’ve still got about an hour before dinner is finished. The room can be spared that long.”
“Won’t people come trickling in?” Harry asked.
“No,” Severus said curtly. “New rules, everyone arrives at the same time and no one leaves the table until the end of meal time.”
Ron whistled. “Merlin, that’s strict.
“And necessary to prevent any mishaps, as I unfortunately learned the first day.” Severus’s eyes clouded over as he remembered walking in on Amycus about to “punish” a fourth year Hufflepuff for being out in the corridors during breakfast. He’d hexed the man within an inch of his life and then taken his memories and those of the girl’s but it had opened his eyes as to just how difficult his reign would be.
Draco’s jaw tightened. He’d remembered that day. It was right before he’d taken Melody up to see him. It wasn’t too long after that he’d gotten Ginny cornered in an abandoned classroom and ironed out a plan. It was obvious that Severus couldn’t be everywhere at once so they’d resurrected the DA to pick up the slack. He held Hermione closer to him, thankful that nothing like that had happened to her.
“They’ll pay,” Harry said darkly. “So how does this destroying thing work?”
“Well, for starters, we’ll all need to leave the room,” Draco said, his hold tightening further around Hermione at the thought of her going back out. “Then I’ll summon the room I need and you’ll all wait out here while I melt this fucking thing.”
“I want to see it!” Ron protested and crossed his arms belligerently.
“I’m sure you do,” Draco said slowly, picking his words carefully. “But I can’t guarantee that you won’t go up in flames with the locket. Fiendfyre isn’t like the little bluebell flame that Hermione can conjure. You can’t put it in a jar, you can’t carry it around to warm you up, it doesn’t have a pleasant glow, and it can spiral out of control with a change in the atmosphere.”
“Then why not destroy it with the sword?” Ron asked.
“I wish we could,” Draco said miserably, thinking about the fact that he was once again having to risk his life and subsequently Hermione’s.
Severus sighed. “The real sword is in the Dark Lord’s hands. He’s given it to Bellatrix to keep safe. I suspect she’ll notice the cup missing any time now.”
“Why does he have it?” Harry asked.
“Because I had to give it to him,” Severus said in annoyance. “It was one of my tasks. He had a goblin there to certify it so I couldn’t very well pull a switch.”
“So fiendfyre it is,” Harry said.
“Unless you happen to keep a basilisk fang in your trousers,” Draco joked weakly and started walking to the door.
“I could go down and get one,” Ron said suddenly. “I’m sure there are some still in the Chamber of Secrets.”
“A novel idea Weasley,” Severus said softly. “Just make sure you kill the contingent of guards set up around the castle and we’ll go there now.”
“How many are here?” Harry asked.
Melody snorted. “Two patrolling each floor, two at the entrance to each house, one at the main door, two at the entry to the gates, and of course, a magical web spread across the school in between the floors that Moldy Wart has under constant surveillance.”
“Merlin,” Harry said softly. “How did we get up here undetected?”
“I’m a bit more than an apprentice transfiguration professor Potter,” Melody said in disgust. “I can bend the wards like butter. I can only do it at one area at a time though or a trip ward goes off, just like the ones at the Ministry or the Weasley’s.”
“How do you know about those?” Ron asked.
Melody smiled. “The lights flashed an awful lot during the holidays, didn’t they?”
Ron’s face grew dark as he looked over to a now sheepish Hermione and a smug Malfoy. “I see.”
“Your wards admit animals and they don’t make a distinction for animagi,” Melody plugged on to keep Ron’s attention off the couple. “These wards are similar but they have an animagus trip ward, the animal’s identity is sent to the Dark Bastard. McGonagall found that out the hard way.” She shivered when she remembered the ambush the old woman had taken. Still, she’d fought bravely.
“Is she okay?” Harry asked in alarm.
Melody waved him off. “It’d take a lot more than a few Death Eaters to take down that old bird…good thing too. Anyway, I think a stag, a weasel, and a couple of hummingbirds would sound the alarm, don’t you?”
“Don’t Alex and Celeste trip them?” Hermione asked suddenly.
Melody turned to her and grinned like the cat that ate the canary. “Funny thing that, vampires and daywalkers weren’t figured into the wards.” Her eyes slid over to a smirking Severus and then back.
“Brilliant.” Hermione beamed and then her face fell. “But that means no trip to the Chamber and no fangs.”
“Afraid not,” Melody frowned. “Even if we apparated directly in there, I couldn’t bend the wards fast enough to keep them from sounding out an alarm.”
“Well you can’t,” Harry said slowly, his eyes sliding over to Hermione and Draco.
“Don’t you think one warning is enough Potter?” Draco spat angrily.
“No one would know.”
“They would,” Severus cut in. “There’s a magical spike ward too. This is the only room without any sort of wards on it.”
“Shite,” Harry yelled and kicked at a nearby stone.
“Fiendfyre it is,” Draco said softly. “Hopefully it won’t take as long this time. I’m well aware of what that thing has in store for me.”
They all filed out quickly. Harry swung the cloak over himself and Ron. Hermione chose to shift into a hummingbird and ride on Melody’s shoulder. Alex and Celeste shifted back to wolf form and stood guard at the hall entrances. Everyone else stood by and watched Draco pace back and forth in front of the door until a small concrete one appeared. He opened it, nodded, and then disappeared.
‘Be careful,’ Hermione thought to him.
‘Always. I love you.’
‘I love you too.’
Forty five minutes later, the tiny red hummingbird on Melody’s shoulder hopped from leg to leg in agitation. It hadn’t taken this long last time. She knew Draco was just fine but she was still worried and didn’t dare try to contact him. He needed all the concentration he could get. Too aggravated to stay put, she started flying circles around Melody’s head until Severus snatched her out of the air.
“He’s fine,” he snapped. “I gather this is one of the first ones he made. It’s probably stronger than the others.”
Hermione chirped in despair and went limp in his hand.
“I know daughter,” he whispered soothingly. “I am worried too but flying about isn’t going to solve anything.”
“He’d better hurry,” Melody said, looking pensively at her watch. “Dinner is almost finished. It’s going to be rather hard to explain why we’re all out here having a pow-wow in front of the ROR.”
“Simply waiting for it to become available so I can do all manner of horrible things I’m reported to be doing. I just have more participants,” Snape said dryly.
“Well, those I don’t mind,” Melody said with a smirk. “But you’ll have to be a voyeur. I’d prefer a change of scenery.”
“What about a mutual performance?” Snape asked lightly.
“That could work,” Melody said as she cocked her head, appearing to think about it.
“Ugh, that’s disgusting,” Ron said a bit too loudly.
“Quiet,” Melody snapped and looked around to make sure no ears were available to hear that. She turned to Ginny with an evil glint in her eye. “Has he been this grumpy since he quit getting any?”
Ginny choked in shock and then burst out laughing before she could control herself. A small scuffle sounded out from under the cloak before blessed silence.
“Stop baiting him. That silencing spell won’t hold forever,” Harry whispered fiercely.
“Duly noted,” Melody said, a large grin plastered on her face. Sounds of footsteps permeated the air.
“Shit, dinner is over,” Melody said right before the concrete door opened and a very exhausted and somewhat singed Draco came lumbering out. He had a charred object in his hands.
“Damn, it just wouldn’t give up,” he whispered tiredly. “I got it though. It’s dead.”
Hermione flew at him full force and he caught her right before she smacked into his nose.
“Sweetheart,” Draco said with a twinge of amusement. “You’re a very beautiful bird but I prefer lips on my women.”
He stepped out into the hallway and froze at the sound of steps. Cursing to himself, he quickly walked back and forth, summoning the hide out for the DA and jerked the door open. Everyone piled in and he slammed the door. Hermione transformed back and planted a huge kiss on his lips. He melted into it, happy he was able to kiss her. The locket had been ten times worse than the diadem, spouting all his worst fears and showing him images he knew he’d see again in his nightmares.
“I’m glad you aren’t dead Malfoy,” Harry broke in. “But we’ve got to figure out how the hell we’re going to get out of here. It’s going to be really damn hard to explain the three of us, let alone you and Snape.”
Draco broke the kiss and stepped back with a sigh. “Unfortunately, I believe Potter is right. We’ve got to be going.” He gave her one last kiss and snapped, returning his appearance to its flawless normalcy. Just as he reached for the doorknob, Melody doubled over in pain. Forgetting everything, he snatched her up and ran with her to the nearest hammock. Alex had already transformed back and was running every diagnostic in the book.
“Damn it,” The vampire hissed. “The placenta is detaching.”
“No!” Severus cried, shocking most of them at the mournful tone in his voice.
“I knew it,” Melody said sadly. “I knew that bastard did something. I dreamt with Harmony last night and she was so worried for the boys. She couldn’t see beyond today.”
“Well, let’s see what he did,” Draco said darkly and cast a spell he’d used on his mother only once. She’d been pregnant when Draco was eight years old. When it turned out to be a girl, his father sent a curse at his mother and walked out. A few days later, she doubled up in pain and had him cast a scan for dark magic. Lucius had made her abort. The spell he cast on Melody sparked a fierce gold before it turned blood red and then hovered over her left hip for a few moments before it turned into the Dark Mark and then melted into an inky black puddle over her womb.
“Son of a bitch!” Alex yelled and hit his knees.
“What?” Harry asked, his eyes wide in shock.
Melody sniffled. “We can save them but we’ll have to grovel at Moldy Wart’s feet.”
“What do you mean?” Ginny asked.
“It’s a signature spell,” Draco said with thinly controlled anger. “He can remove it. It’ll take about a week to fully detach the placenta to give him enough time to counteract it.”
“It’s a trap,” Severus whispered. “If I take her in, he’ll know I’m more attached to her than I should be. He’ll consider it a lie on my part.”
“What if you didn’t take her in?” Hermione asked, her mind whirring with possibilities.
“We’ll lose the babies tomorrow,” Alex said, his spell scanning them again.
“Wait!” Melody yelled when he got to the two small dots that inhabited her body. “I can see the signature. It’s…strange. It isn’t completely dialed to his signature. It’s been muddled.”
“Why?” Harry asked.
“Well, someone shares his magic, don’t they?” Melody grinned. “And as such, he isn’t quite powerful enough to put a lock on a spell. It’s why I can bend the ward webs so easily. I could take down anything he could put up…except these. I can’t perform the same magic on myself. It’s been locked against my signature.”
“I share his magic,” Harry whispered. “Could I break it?”
Melody smiled grimly. “You can Harry. You can break the signature but I’m afraid that you aren’t strong enough to lift the curse.”
“Who is?” Severus asked, his face set in a stony mask but his eyes were awash with anguish.
“You have to ask?” Melody whispered as she stared at Hermione and Draco.
“We’ll do it,” Hermione said sternly while Draco nodded.
Melody doubled over in pain as a second wave from the spell hit her. Alex cast a dozen spells to ease her suffering and she was able to straighten out, panting for breath. He growled in anguish. “We need to be quick if they’re going to have a fighting chance.”
“What do we do?” Harry asked, drawing his wand, a determined look on his face.
Melody walked him through cracking the signature. She watched eagerly as he swirled his wand over her stomach again and again, concentrating as hard as he could to break the signature. Ginny had laid her hands on his shoulders and sent her magic to him as well. After all, even though Voldemort was pure evil, he still had a normal balance of magic. Melody let out a yell as blue sparks shot from her stomach. Everyone jumped back, terrified of what had just happened.
“It’s okay,” Melody said weakly. “He broke the signature. Give me a minute though. That hurt like a son of a bitch. Alex, can you tell them how to fix the rip while I rest?”
Alex squeezed her hand and nodded, turning to the couple and having an intense discussion about how to repair the tear without hurting the twins. They were so involved that they didn’t notice the dozen or so students enter the room with McGonagall hot on their heels. Cries rang out when they discovered the evil headmaster and a Slytherin in their midst.
“Stop!” Harry ordered when they drew their wands.
“Harry!” They all cried and surrounded him. He and Ginny kept a close eye on them to make sure no one threw a hex toward Melody. He needn’t have worried though. Severus had cast a strong protection ward around her to make sure she was safe.
“What is going on here Mr. Potter?” McGonagall asked in shock.
“They’re trying to heal her,” Harry said, turning back to the group. Alex had finished explaining everything and now they were trying to make Melody comfortable so she could tell them how to break the spell.
“Alright,” Melody said as she struggled to sit up so she could look at the pure couple. “This spell is very similar to the one Albus got from that ring. It’s almost pure evil and reacts the same way. However, it has a counter; one Moldy Shorts was counting on. It requires blood, his blood, as a binding agent.”
“Where in the hell are we going to get his blood?” Draco asked in outrage.
Melody quirked an eyebrow. “Are you daft?”
Draco’s eyes sparkled in understanding. He took out his knife and walked toward Harry, just noticing the audience when he stepped closer and a dozen wands flew to aim at him. “I need your blood Potter.”
“Why?” Harry asked.
“To break the curse,” Draco said, motioning to Melody.
Harry nodded and held out his hand. He sighed at the gasps and flinched when Malfoy made a tiny cut in his finger to extract a few droplets of blood. The blonde healed his hand quickly and stormed back over to Melody. Harry turned to do some damage control.
“Got it,” Draco said, holding the bloody knife for Melody to see.
“Perfect.” She hissed as another cramp rolled through her body. “Mother fucker that hurts,” she cried and doubled over.
“Can I give her a pain potion?” Severus asked nervously.
Alex shook his head. “It has to be a modified one for pregnancy.”
Severus dug around in his robes until he pulled out a baby blue colored bottle. “Will this do?”
Alex opened the vial and sniffed. He listened patiently while Severus made a rundown of all the ingredients in it and their order of introduction. The vampire nodded. “It’ll be fine. Give it to her.”
Melody took it without protest and flopped back down on the hammock with a relieved sigh. Celeste, in wolf form, tenderly mopped her now sweaty brow with a cold cloth in between her teeth. Melody continued. “Alright, now you need to summon all your strength. Hermione will need to push first. Then Draco, you need to push back right when it tries to turn loose. You’ll see it. It’s an inky black color just like the spell you cast turned. At that moment, you flick the blood onto my abdomen. It’ll have a tantrum and you’ll need to squash it. The incantation is evanescunt aeternum. Don’t use your wands though. You’ll fry them.”
Draco and Hermione nodded and started to concentrate but their magic seemed off. They frowned and tried again and again but while they felt the power grow, they couldn’t seem to summon it to share.
“I was afraid of that,” Melody said sadly. “You used up all your energy on that damned locket and you two have been separated for a while. You’ll need to reconnect before you can do anything.”
Draco quirked an eyebrow and looked up at their audience. They were all standing back at Potter’s request but they looked ready to hex him to bits. “That’s easier said than done,” he whispered.
Melody chuckled. “I think it’s time you stopped hiding, don’t you?”
“Can they be trusted though?” Draco asked.
“Well, they won’t be able to tell even if they can’t. No one leaves until I ward that door.”
“I’m not shagging him in front of everyone,” Hermione hissed.
“Just bite him,” Melody shrugged. “Same difference.”
“Except what happens when we do,” Hermione mumbled.
“Ah,” Melody said with a knowing grin. “Well, put Harry’s blood in a vial under stasis and you can use your knife to make a cut, just like at the club.”
Draco nodded and conjured a vial out of thin air, ignoring the gasps of their riveted audience. He flicked Potter’s blood into it and then cast a stasis charm on it so it wouldn’t dry out. Then he grabbed Hermione’s right hand and made a tiny cut. He conjured another tiny vial and filled it with her blood. Then he healed her hand and gave her the knife. She repeated the gesture, breathing deeply when the smell of his blood permeated the air. They traded vials and downed them, biting back smirks when they heard gagging sounds. A small white light flickered from their eyes but nothing else.
“Not good.” Melody frowned. “Kiss her.”
Draco shrugged and grabbed Hermione pulling her to straddle his lap while he ravaged her lips. They kissed passionately for a few minutes, ignoring the murmurs and shouts but something was different. It was like there was a block on their flow of magic. They could sense each other’s fears, thoughts, and feelings but the familiar crackle was gone. They looked over to Melody with wide eyes.
The red head bit her lip and narrowed her eyes. Suddenly, they widened and her mouth dropped open. “Did you feel each other’s cuts?”
“No,” they answered at the same time, shocked to find that they really didn’t.
“That’s it then. You’ve managed a semi-permanent wall. It’s blocked the flow. You’ll have to take it down.”
“But how can we do that if we don’t know we’re doing it?” Hermione asked softly. She couldn’t feel any wall, not even the one they fortified when they needed to be separated.
“It isn’t in your mind,” Melody whispered.
“Come again?” Draco asked worriedly.
Melody sighed. “Off with your shirt and take that collar off.”
“You want me to strip,” Draco said flatly.
“Hermione too. Actually, transfigure your clothes into your work out gear, the stuff you wore when I made you dance your asses off. You need to see this.”
“But they’ll see!” Hermione whimpered.
“I think the time for hiding is past,” Severus said gravely as he rubbed his hand over Melody’s shoulder.
“I thought that was the point,” Draco said tersely.
“Let’s put it this way,” Severus sighed. “If Weasley and Miss Lovegood were to go through the same process, different symbols notwithstanding, they’d look the same.”
“They can’t tell,” Hermione said softly and relaxed when Severus nodded.
They reluctantly stripped down and transfigured the rest of their clothes to look like their work out gear. Then they removed their jewelry and their shoes and socks. Melody floated them a wet flannel and they tenderly wiped the makeup off each other’s faces and wrists.
While the students murmured theories about the strange markings, McGonagall gasped. “It isn’t possible!”
“It is,” Severus said softly. “For almost a year now.”
“Merlin!” The professor breathed and held her hand to her chest.
“Now,” Melody interrupted, “I want you to compare. Remember, they are a mirror image.”
Draco and Hermione set out to examine each and every rune they could see. They all looked the same except for one, a small circular rune on the top of the band around their navels. It was thicker, more jagged on Draco’s skin than on Hermione’s.
“What the fuck?” Draco asked, prodding it.
“It’s a protection rune,” Melody said softly. “Yours has changed, become the dominant one. I should have noticed it a month ago. You were trying so hard to keep her from feeling pain that even after it was over, you took a bit of it for yourself. The rune morphed and created a bridge and a barrier. You can’t feel it because you can block automatically but it’s there.”
“So we need to change it back to normal,” Hermione said as she rubbed the rune tenderly.
“How do we do that?” Draco asked.
Melody laughed. “It’s actually fairly simple. We go back to basics. Celeste, go get my dolls.”
The wolf nodded and sprinted out the door.
“Dolls?” Draco asked, his voice filled with dread.
“Yes, dual concentration. You need to find that part of the mind and convince it that there isn’t any danger.”
“And the dolls will do this?” Hermione asked.
“No,” Melody said patiently and winced when she felt another cramp. “The dolls will put you back into that state of mind, the ability to focus through each other. I think you might have lost that.”
“We can do it without the bloody dolls,” Draco growled.
Melody crossed her arms and smirked. “Alright smartass, prove it.”
Draco grabbed Hermione and pulled her in for another bone shattering kiss. She melted into him and they whispered sweet nothings back and forth in their minds. Then they reached out, trying to find the same place they’d been when they were working with the dolls. It seemed like ages ago that they’d done it, a somewhat happier time. They could let go of everything, their daunting task were gone and they just would just feel, gage each other’s movements with just the slightest brush. It seemed impossible now. They’d worked so hard on living separately that trying to merge together was almost as hard as it was before.
“Can’t do it, can you?” Melody asked smugly.
Draco sighed and rested his chin on top of his wife’s head. “I know we can. It’s just going to take a while.”
Melody nodded. “I know you can too but if you try and force it, it’s going to take ten times as long.” She held her stomach and breathed deeply. “I don’t think we have that much longer.”
The couple bowed their heads in acknowledgement as a red wolf came bursting through the door with a metal suitcase in her mouth. She padded over to them and stepped on the latch, revealing the two featureless dolls they’d become so acquainted with. They each grabbed one and sighed, closing their eyes to concentrate. The dolls morphed to look like they had the very first time they’d done this, the night they’d first went to the club. Draco’s doll had on Hermione’s sexy red dress, complete with high heels and crystals in her hair. Hermione’s doll was dashing in his leather pants and silk shirt.
“Now, you think you can skip a few steps?” Melody asked.
“Well, the first at least. Can we switch in the middle?” Hermione asked, biting her lip.
“Sure.” Melody said, “Pick your poison.”
“Latin,” they answered at the same time.
Melody grinned. “Latin it is. Switch dolls. I’ll start you off and then yell when you switch.”
The couple nodded and cleared a spot on the floor for them to dance. They were more nervous than they were acting. No one they knew aside from the phenoms and Ron and Luna had seen them dance and now they had a huge audience. It was nerve wracking. What was worse, they had to do this quickly so they could fix Melody. Filled with determination, they took a deep breath and commanded their dolls to rise. The first strings of a sexy Latin song they’d once heard at the club filled the air. With a jerk and a spin, they were off.
They couldn’t help the large smile that spread across their faces when Melody and Alex began singing the words in harmony. They dipped, twirled, sashayed, and stepped across the floor, the dolls’ movements fluid with theirs. The world seemed to disappear; even the dolls were small flickers in the back of their minds. Suddenly, Melody called out “SWITCH!”
They stepped back and blinked, the dolls wavering a bit as they took control of the opposite doll, allowing each to bow. They nodded and stepped back into the song. The dolls wavered the first few bars and then started to even out. By the end of the song, the movements were flawless and Hermione and Draco hadn’t felt so connected in a very long time. The long hard months seemed to disappear and they had a new perspective. They could feel the magic surging between them now, crackling below the surface.
“I believe you’re ready,” Melody said. “Remember, stealth.”
They nodded and ran back over to her, holding hands as they concentrated on building their magic. When it started sparking from their fingertips, they gritted their teeth and held on. This was going to take everything they had. A few moments later, wind whipped through the room, chilling the occupants. Then the couple started hovering above the ground, oblivious to the startled cries of their peers.
Unable to hold on any longer, Hermione pushed the spell as hard as she could. It broke loose, the inky blackness started to seep from Melody’s abdomen. When it was almost out, Draco pushed back fiercely. The spell started somersaulting back and forth between the two spells. He grabbed the vial of Potter’s blood and flicked it onto Melody’s abdomen. The spell gave out a roar like it was being killed. They repeated the spell at exactly the same time with as much power as they could muster. “Evanescunt Aeternum!”
White light flooded the room and a high pitched wail permeated the area. Everyone had to put their fingers in their ears, the sound threatening to burst their ear drums. Hermione and Draco held on, not willing to back down from a fight and leave Melody in danger. Just when they were at the end of their surge, the spell exploded in a shower of black sparks, dissipating into thin air and leaving them in darkness.
Now temporarily blinded, they worked on instinct alone, casting the spells to repair the damage done by the horrible spell. A soft orange glow flickered above Melody’s abdomen when the spell was completed. Soft sobs could be heard as they tried to gain their vision back.
“Melody?” They asked in unison.
“You did it,” she cried.
“Thank Merlin,” they breathed and then collapsed.
“Hermione!” Harry screamed and lunged for her but Alex held him back.
“I wouldn’t Harry. They’ve completely exhausted themselves. Remember the last time they lost consciousness?”
Harry nodded, thinking back to the day that Malfoy had flown through the wall of the DADA classroom and what had happened when they woke them back up. “They nearly killed us.”
“Yup. I think I’d let them sleep it off,” Alex said, levitating the couple to the next hammock, making sure they remained touching. “The rune is back,” he called.
“Thank Merlin for small miracles.” Melody groaned and held her stomach. “Damn it still hurts.”
“I know baby but there isn’t anything else we can do about it,” Alex said, flashing back over to her and rubbing her forehead tenderly.
“Are they alright?” She asked weakly.
He flicked his wand and a vision of the two tiny dots in her abdomen appeared. He flicked again and sounds of the womb filled the air followed by two fluttering heartbeats. “Hear them?”
Melody clamped her hand over her mouth to hold in her cries and nodded. Severus let out a breath of air he didn’t notice he was holding and gently kissed her forehead as he wiped the tears from her cheeks. Then he noticed the audience and scowled, angry that he’d let his guard down and now had to do some damage control. He stood stiffly and marched over to the door, raising his wand and casting an incredibly complex privacy ward around the door. It would bind the tongue of anyone coming out. No one could discuss anything beyond these walls except the phenoms and the pure couple.
“Severus,” McGonagall called sharply and he spun around. “I think we need to talk.”
Severus gave a curt nod and opened the door, extending his hand and motioning for her to go first. He looked down to see that Celeste was right at his side. His eyebrows rose in shock. It was obvious that he thought she’d stay with Melody. She was in good hands though. Alex wouldn’t let anyone he didn’t trust get within twenty feet of her. Potter and Ginny looked to be of the same mindset as well. Weasley, while shaken, looked resolute as well. Perhaps things would work out. He nodded to himself and marched out the door and to his office. What in the hell was he going to tell Minerva?

They were in Malfoy Manor. Hermione was chained to the wall, trying desperately to ignore the pain as she hung there, completely nude. Lucius and Bellatrix walked in dragging a pale and shaking Draco.
“You failed yesterday,” Lucius said in a deadly tone. “Do so again, and I’ll let you watch the master at work.”
Draco’s mournful eyes set upon hers and their vision went black for a moment. A pinprick of light could be spotted. Moving towards it, they stepped out into the bright day, squinting fiercely to try and see anything. Voldemort stood at the gates of Hogwarts. They held back their nausea as they looked upon hundreds of dead bodies, their friends, classmates, and teachers. Voldemort strolled along the pathway, stopping now and then to pat a loyal Death Eater on the head.
It was then they noticed that they were now bound and gagged, kneeling forcefully at his feet. There was a cold dagger at their necks. The mutilated bodies of Severus and Melody were thrown in front of them and they let out a wail, only to be cut off by a sharp slice to their cheeks.
“Silence!” Voldemort hissed. “So, these are the ones. Draco, a traitor among my ranks. No matter. We did what we set out to do."
A couple of masked death eaters carried a few more bodies and dumped them in front of them. The tortured face of Harry stared back at Hermione and she bit back a scream. Ginny was dumped in front of Draco, who held his breath in devastation at the damage that had been inflicted on them.
“It’s a dream,” Draco yelled around his gag. He cut his eyes to Hermione, begging her to listen. “It’s just a dream. I swear.”
“You wish,” Voldemort hissed and they felt the compulsion to kneel. “Normally, we just kill the traitors but I saw your power today. I’d be a fool not to take advantage of it. Therefore, you will cooperate and you will have your lives.”
Draco and Hermione shook their heads fiercely.
“How about I rephrase that?” Voldemort said in a silky voice. He quirked a finger and Greyback and Lucius stepped forward. A cool breeze swept over them and they noticed that they were now nude. “You two do cut a striking image.”
“It’s a dream!” Draco screamed, trying desperately to dislodge the gag. “Wake up!”
“I can’t!” Hermione yelled back. “I can’t!”
“What the hell is going on here Harry?” Seamus’s thick Scottish brogue sounded out across the battlefield.
“Try harder!” Draco urged and started rocking back and forth, trying to wake himself up. This just couldn’t be real. He’d seen these visions before when he was destroying the horcrux. They weren’t real. He couldn’t even feel his magic respond when he tried summoning it.
“I reward my most loyal followers. Have fun.” Voldemort smirked evilly.
Draco screamed as Lucius kneeled behind Hermione. The cold voice of his father cut through his stomach like a hot knife. “I’m going to have fun with you little mudblood. Before I’m done, you’ll learn your place.”
“They’re trapped again,” Melody’s faint voice came to their ears.
“Yes! It’s a dream!” Hermione screamed against the gag and then shuddered when she felt the icy fingers of Lucius trailing along her back. You weren’t supposed to feel things like that in dreams, were you?
A sickening thud sounded out as Fenrir backhanded Draco. He saw stars for a moment as he was twirled around. “I think they should watch each other.” The werewolf’s foul breath washed over him, making his stomach churn.
Lucius nodded and grinned wickedly as he forced Hermione down on all fours while fumbling with is belt. “You have no idea how long I’ve wanted to do this.”
A sharp pain shot through the couple and they sat up, both screaming at the top of their lungs. They scrambled for purchase and were promptly dumped on the floor. Draco caught himself inches from crushing Hermione, who was now underneath him. He threw up a shield around her and scrambled backwards with her until they hit a wall, disoriented and confused.
“Easy,” Melody said soothingly. “You’re out now. It was just a dream. You’re safe.”
Draco looked around wildly to see a dozen members of the DA starting back at him as if he were a newt. He clutched a now sobbing Hermione to his chest and tried to calm his breathing and make sense of what had just happened. It was the same images from the locket that he’d seen earlier. They were so real. He could feel them.
“Take a few deep breaths,” Melody ordered. “It’ll help.”
“What the fuck was that?” Draco asked shakily.
“Dream sharing is more intense than memories,” Melody said softly as she walked over to them, still clutching her stomach. “You can actually feel the events rather than just see them. That’s why it’s a dangerous discipline. You can lose yourself in them.” She knelt down in front of them and held out a few vials of calming draught.
Draco snatched them up and gave one to Hermione, who only let go of him for a moment. They downed the vials and returned them. “You need to lie down,” Draco said with a frown.
“I will,” Melody said, moving slowly back across the room. “When you two calm down enough to function.”
“It was awful,” Hermione whimpered and started sobbing again. She was thankful for the soothing circles that Draco was rubbing on her back and let herself melt into him.
“What happened?” Melody asked as she sat down on her hammock with Alex’s help.
“I’d rather not say,” Draco said hoarsely and gave a pointed glance around the room.
“Another time,” Melody nodded. “Are you ready to come out from there?”
Draco shook his head. He didn’t feel safe enough just yet. Somehow, having a wall up against his back was comforting. It was like he’d reverted to his fox animagus form and was looking for a safe burrow. He tried to ignore the murmurs around the room. “How long?”
“About an hour,” Alex said, looking at his watch. “The dreams just started though so I woke you up. Sorry about the sting but you weren’t unconscious, just asleep, so it hurt.”
“That’s fine,” Draco whispered. “I’d rather the sting.”
“We’re going to have to get a handle on this you know,” Melody said gently. “We’ll practice with the dolls. We can combine it with combat this time and see if we can’t exercise that particular muscle in your minds. It looks like the months apart have taken a heavy toll.”
Draco nodded. “Whatever we need to do.”
Melody looked around and frowned. “Don’t you all have homework to do?”
Everyone save for Harry, Ginny, and Ron rushed over to their hammocks and took out their school books. The murmurs didn’t stop though. Draco was starting to understand how an animal felt at the muggle zoo. Still, there was a part of him that was overjoyed that someone else knew Hermione was his. He wanted the world to know but a few dozen members of the light would have to suffice.
“It’s safe now Draco. Come out and sit down. We’ll have a chat,” Melody coaxed.
Draco cautiously hauled himself up off the floor, making sure to keep Hermione carefully cradled in his arms. His entire body was sore; whether from the dream or them completely exhausting themselves to heal Melody was unclear. He lowered himself gingerly onto the hammock, realizing that he was still shaking from the dream.
“Must be some dream,” Melody said as she stared at his trembling hands. She looked around and cast a privacy bubble. “Spill.”
Draco let out a harsh breath. “It’s some of the things I saw in the horcrux.”
“Care to elaborate?” Melody asked with a raised eyebrow.
“Not aloud,” Draco growled and glanced at Weasley. He couldn’t very well tell him that some of the things he’d seen were an extension of the visions they’d gotten from the fates.
Melody nodded in understanding and walked over to him, lightly placing her hand on his temple. “Legilimens,” she whispered gently and entered his mind as quietly as she could. She ran through everything he’d seen in the horcrux, everything they’d experienced in their dream, and then pulled away with a shudder. They were silent for a long time.
“Pleasant stuff,” Draco huffed.
“It’s a doozy alright,” Melody said thoughtfully. “But what worries me is that even though you know it was a trick, your mind still seems to linger on whether or not it could be real, especially the part we woke you up for.”
“It’s not real,” Draco said vehemently.
Melody gave a grim smile. “No but you need a guarantee. Alex, give them the key.”
Alex nodded and pulled a battered tin cup from his robes. He handed it to the still shivering couple and sat back down.
“It’s on voice command,” Melody explained. “Go. Talk to her. Let her reassure you. Rest a bit. Go for a run. Do whatever floats your boat and then come back here and we’ll get started on your training. We can’t risk you losing your abilities like that again.”
“You’re going to the Ranch,” Harry breathed. “I want to go.”
“I’m afraid I’m going to have to ask you to stay Harry,” Melody said sadly. “They need this time alone. I’ll send you later and you can have a nice long chat with a lonely old man. For now, they go so they can regain a part of themselves.”
“What did they see?” Harry asked.
“I’ll tell you later,” Melody said. “The incantation is simple. Home.”
Draco nodded and tucked the cup into his chest so both he and Hermione could hold on to it. A tug behind the navel and they found themselves sitting in the dirt in the middle of the afternoon. Draco breathed in a lung full of fall air and thanked the stars they were out of that castle, away from prying eyes and crazed Death Eaters.
“I thought you two would be here,” Harmony said. They looked up to see the smiling twin waddle down the stairs.
“I thought you were supposed to be in bed,” Draco said, unable to squelch his smile.
“I am. Let’s just keep this our little secret, shall we?” The smile slid from her face when she saw a crying Hermione. “Come on in. I’ll have Maria make some tea and we’ll have a nice long chat.”
A few hours later saw a much more relaxed couple chatting amicably over a warm cup of chamomile tea. Hermione was happy she wasn’t trembling any longer. Her brain had completely shut down for a while. It was the feeling of Lucius’s cock nudged up against her thigh that had sent her into hysterics. She didn’t ever want to go through that again. Harmony had latched right onto the problem and reassured them both that the tangent they saw wasn’t going to ever be a possibility again.
“So, are you feeling better now?” Harmony asked softly, breaking into her thoughts.
“Much,” Hermione said emphatically. “Thank you.”
“No problem. We all need a hand every now and then. If this is the way I can pay you back for your help, I’ll do it gladly.”
“We don’t expect to be paid.” Hermione frowned.
Harmony laughed. “Of course not but I’d like to try and even the score a bit.”
Draco snorted. “You should drop it.”
“Sounds like the Gryffindors are rubbing off on you.” Harmony smirked. “Anyway, why don’t you two go upstairs and rest for a bit. I had Maria clean your room while we were talking. It should be ready for you.”
“Thank you,” Hermione said and backed away from the table. She walked around and placed her hand on Harmony’s stomach, sighing at the feeling of peace she got from the tiny twins. Draco had done the same. Then they each got a pat on their shoulders before trudging up the stairs.
“Some day,” Draco said tiredly as he flopped down on the bed.
Hermione sank down beside him and rested her head on his chest. “You think the twins will be alright now?”
“Which set?”
Hermione laughed. “All three I guess but I meant Melody’s boys.”
“I think they’ll be just fine now. I’m more worried about you.” Draco shifted over to his side and gently brushed Hermione’s hair out of her face.
“I’ll be fine now. It’s just…I still feel dirty.”
Draco nodded in understanding. “Do you want to take a bath?”
“I do. Will…will you join me?” Hermione suddenly felt shy and nervous, wondering if he ever wanted to touch her again.
Draco growled and hopped off the bed, snatching her up in his arms and walking to the bathroom. “If the world would leave us alone, I’d never stop touching you. Don’t you think for one moment that I think less of you because you were at the mercy of a dream. In fact, I think I’m going to bathe every inch of you…with my tongue if necessary.”
“I’d hardly be clean if you did that,” Hermione joked and motioned for him to let her down.
She undressed while he ran the bath. He had already stripped by the time she was nude and helped her in to sit in front of him. The warm water soothed their aching muscles and added the final bit of relaxation they needed to let go. Images, memories, and feelings flooded their mind, almost overwhelming them with their intensity. It had been so long since they could let their guard down like this. It was nice, if a little uncomfortable.
Draco gently bathed his wife, stopping to place gentle kisses everywhere he could reach after each limb was rinsed off. He could tell she still felt a little strange after the dream. He didn’t know what else he could do to show her they were alright except to love her. Once she was clean, she turned around and did the same to him. He relished her gentle touch and the soft sucking kisses she planted on his sensitized skin. He turned back around quickly, startling her as he grabbed her waist and pulled her into his lap.
He was rock hard, having reached the end of his control. She sunk down over him slowly and he savored her tight warmth enveloping him. They set a slow pace, just content to be able to enjoy themselves. Here, there were no roommates ready to come barging in at the first sign of foul play. There were no sadistic teachers, hiding Death Eaters, judging students, or evil madmen to stop them. They could take their time and remember why they fell in love in the first place. After all, the bond didn’t force them to fall in love. They did that all on their own.
Hermione was in heaven. With each stroke, he washed away the memory of Lucius kneeling behind her, his foul breath on her neck. Draco replaced each filthy touch with two of his own in between scorching kisses and gentle nips. He stroked parts she swore he’d never reached before, claiming her all over again as his own. He caressed every inch of her skin. It was so wonderful to watch his tattoos glowing gently in the dim light of the sunset. Sunset!
“Draco, we have to get back!” She gasped as he gave her a particularly sharp thrust.
“Not until this is over,” Draco groaned and lifted her up, slamming her back down on top of him. “We need this. Just forget about them for now and feel me.”
Hermione moaned. “Oh I do feel you. You’re all I can feel.”
“Good,” Draco sighed, relaxing a bit. He had been tense, thinking about his father’s filthy hands touching her. He wanted to erase it from her memory and was glad he’d been able to. He sped up a bit, ignoring the sloshing of the water as it spilled out of the tub. It was growing cold anyway and they couldn’t use charms to warm it back up.
Hermione groaned softly as she felt her pleasure rise from the increased pace. Somehow, he seemed to brush against her in just the right way. She realized that he’d snaked his arm in between them and was now stroking her clit in time with his thrusts. The bubble in her stomach rose until it finally burst. Draco gave a feral growl as he spilled himself inside her. Their magic was back, filling the room with white brilliance. They stayed joined for a while, just enjoying the warmth of each other.
Hermione didn’t want it to end though. She felt her fangs descent and made a decision. She pushed him backwards and sunk her fangs into his jugular, pulling the sweet nectar from him and shuddering when his half hard cock stood at attention again. He rocked into her roughly, the effects of her fangs spurring him on. She felt him duck his head and then a sharp pain permeated her shoulder before overwhelming pleasure consumed her. She pulled her fangs out and lapped at the wound, enjoying the powerful shocks he was giving her with his fangs and his thrusts. Suddenly, she was at the precipice again. He pulled his fangs out and healed her wound, rising and lifting her in time to his strokes. Her climax peaked again and she fell forward on his chest as wave after wave of ecstasy washed over her.
Draco whimpered as he felt his second orgasm crash through him. It was so powerful it robbed him of the power to do anything but hold on. Hermione’s walls were milking him for all he was worth and his eyelids fluttered shut in pleasure. They collapsed in the now cold water, too tired to move for several more minutes until the shivering started. They finally collected themselves, redressed, and trampled downstairs.
Harmony and Dumbledore were in the dining room when they arrived. “Hungry?” Harmony called.
“Starving!” Draco said with wide eyes as he took in the fajitas on the table.
The adults laughed and invited them to join in. It was the most wonderful meal either of them had eaten in a good while. When they were full, they thanked Harmony again and made to leave.
“Here, take this with you,” Harmony said, thrusting a brown paper sack at them. “It’s some tea for Melody and the extra strong coffee you two adore. I have a feeling you’ll need it today.”
“No kidding,” Draco said sourly and thanked her again. They used the tin cup and returned outside the gates of the school.
“How are we going to get in?” Hermione whispered.
“Melody isn’t the only one who can bend wards,” Draco said smugly and proceeded to disillusion them. They slowly made their way through the castle, stopping every few feet to make sure they weren’t being followed. The sight of the ROR door made them both sigh in relief. They quickly walked through and shut the door behind him.
“Hermione!” Harry said enthusiastically as he ran over and embraced her. “Good grief, are you okay?”
“I take it Melody told you,” Draco said softly.
Harry nodded, a sad look in his eyes. “I can’t imagine.” He shook his head to clear out the thoughts. “If Ginny…”
Hermione’s breath caught when a glimmer of the vision whizzed past her eyes, a tortured Harry and a beaten Ginny lying broken on the ground. She viciously shook herself to dislodge those images. They were false, nothing more.
“Ah, if it isn’t Prince Charming and Sleeping Beauty,” Melody called. She was walking rather slowly, her hand still on her stomach.
“How are you?” Hermione asked, her eyes locked on the pale twin’s stomach.
“I’m fine, bit sore, but the important thing is that they’ll be fine. We heard the heartbeat, two of them!”
“That’s great!” Hermione gushed and then remembered the bag that Harmony had given them. “Harmony sent you some tea.”
Melody took the bag and opened it, grinning widely when she saw the contents. “Bless her. Oh hey, she sent you the strong stuff. I’ll brew you two a cup while you stretch. You need to start working immediately.”
Draco groaned and rested his head on Hermione’s shoulder. “When this is over, I’m staying in bed for a month.”
Melody laughed. “Harmony insists it isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Now, get a move on you two.”
“What about everyone else?” Draco asked, his eyes flitting from hammock to hammock. Their occupants were bleary eyed, trying to figure out what all the commotion was about.
“We’ve reached an understanding,” Melody said, her jaw set. “They keep their traps shut, and I keep my wand to myself.”
Draco chuckled darkly. “Too bad you don’t need one.”
Melody gave him a responding smirk. “Too right. Now, get to work.”
Draco and Hermione sighed sadly and stalked over to a clear corner. They knew there was no way Melody was going to let them get out of this. Draco looked over his shoulder to see Melody fixing a pot of hot water for their coffee. “What are we doing?”
“Well, for now, we’re going to make sure your concentration is flawless. I dare say you look stronger now, more…connected.”
Hermione blushed brightly and ducked her head into Draco’s chest. She felt him chuckle and shook her head in mortification.
Melody gave a loud laugh. “I’ll take that as a yes. Now, more than likely, this is going to wake everyone up. Get used to performing in front of an audience you two. Actually, I had a thought. We’ll meet in Sev’s office tonight to discuss it but I will say that it has everything to do with a performance. Now, work!”
Draco and Hermione took their stances and each other’s dolls into their conscience and began the grueling two hour training session that they’d grown accustomed to during the previous year. They fell into step easily, ignoring the outraged cries from their peers. If this would help them win the war, they’d go at it full tilt.
AN: Hello again everyone! Moldy's a bastard huh? I feel really bad for Melody but I had to do it. Draco and Hermione had to realize that they needed to do some work. Next we see everyone's reactions to the new (to them) couple and we'll make some plans for Halloween. Unfortunately, yes, we are down to the last several chapters...as much as I hate it. I've grown to really love this story. Thank you everyone for your reviews. They mean so much to me. Keep them coming and let me know how I'm doing and if you find any mistakes.
*the spell Evanescunt Aeternum translates to disappear forever in Latin. (I'm so original.)
