Hermione made it a point to study every inch of the courtroom. Her Master had insisted on it. He was with her, hidden beneath her robes and she was glad for it. The tiny flutters now and then calmed her racing heart. She wished he could be with Draco in this moment, but both men had assured her that he would be under too much scrutiny to try and smuggle a bat under his robes. If anyone happened to see, they’d accusing him of something unsavory.
She studied the members of the Wisengamut, ticking them off in her brain. Minister Lockley, interim until an actual election could take place, appeared to be deep in thought. Or constipated. If he stared any harder at his hands, they might light on fire. She was tempted to try and read his mind but she knew she wasn’t a good enough at legilimency to try. Undersecretary Brichard was a former member of the Order of the Phoenix. She recognized him from some of the meetings. He had been an Unspeakable. Word was, he was backing Kingsley in the elections. He appeared to be studying Draco, who was speaking animatedly with Charlie about the finer points of the proposed legislature. Draco knew it front and back, but it never hurt to double check.
She scanned a few more people. There didn’t seem to be any one theme. Everyone was doing their own thing but she wasn’t fooled. This legislature had been blown sky high and they were all nervous. She almost grinned when the Greengrass’s took their seats. They looked the color of ash that had been hit with a killing curse. Served them right.
She slowly walked across the courtroom, trying to appear casual as she closed the distance between herself and Draco. She wouldn’t be presenting with him but she had every intention of being with him until the moment he did. He needed the support. He’d awoken that morning groggy but very clear headed with a calm she hadn’t seen in a long time. Throughout the morning, he’d slowly become more nervous. No one else would notice the stiffness or the mask. They’d take it as part of the Malfoy package, but she knew better.
She kept her ears open as she traipsed. Bits of conversations floated to her. Her hearing had improved a bit, a revelation to share with her Master later. He would be pleased. In fact, in that moment, she felt a warm pulse and shivered. He knew. She sighed in pleasure and kept walking. Several people were talking about the attack on her and Draco. There were conversations about misconduct by the Aurors. She noticed that the Wisengamet members they’d accused of the attack weren’t present today. Rita had done a splendid job weaving tales.
One voice in the crowd made her come to a halt. That cultured purr could only belong to one person. A quick turn of the head confirmed it. Malfoy senior had arrived. She felt her Master flutter beneath her robe, a gentle reminder that she needed to keep walking. How that bastard was still walking free was beyond her. He should have been rotting away in a Ministry cell somewhere awaiting trial. She huffed and sidled up to Draco, placing a hand on his arm so as not to startle him.
“Hello, love,” he said quietly, quickly sliding his arm around her shoulder. “Charlie and I were just finishing up here.”
“Hey, Charlie,” she said softly, trying for a smile that was much too weak.
Charlie booped her nose and grinned. “Hey tiger. When this thing gets passed, you two come and see me. That little Peruvian Vipertooth has really taken off.”
“She’s doing well?” Hermione asked.
Charlie laughed. “Oh definitely. We’ve had to move her in with a more dominant herd. She’s going to rule the roost, she is.”
“That’s good to hear,” she said, relaxing at Charlie’s warm and friendly demeanor.
“Like I said, come see me. We’ll… catch up.”
She couldn’t smother her smirk as Charlie winked and sauntered off. Draco sniffed. “Cocky bastard.”
Hermione chuckled. “Says the pot.”
Draco shook his head and pulled her in closer. “I take it you saw father?”
She nodded and laid her head on his shoulder. “How did he manage to get out.”
“Apparently, he made bail,” he said sourly.
“Bastard.”
“That’s him alright,” he growled. “Potter should be here in a moment, right?”
“The entire army-“
She stopped talking along with the rest of the room when Harry entered. Ginny was on his arm, head held high with a fierce look of determination on her face. Ron was on his other side, a blank look on his. She was suitably impressed. He looked like he meant business. Neville followed with Luna on his arm. Then the rest of Dumbledore’s Army fell in behind. Best of all, McGonagall brought up the rear. She cut an impressive figure in her tartan robes and pointy hat. It was awe inspiring, watching as the entire group took a seat in one of the prominent areas of the benches.
“I have to say,” Draco said quietly. “Bloke knows how to make an entrance.”
Hermione laughed and then turned fully to him. “You’re going to do fantastic.”
He took a deep breath and nodded. “I just hope the groundwork is solid.”
She nodded and then smirked. “There is just one last thing, you know, to stack the decks and all.”
He quirked a brow. “Oh? And what is that?”
“Just come confirmation of gossip.”
Before he could speak, she pulled his head down and stood up on her tippy toes, pressing her mouth to his. The kiss was short but fiery and it took everything they both had to pull away. She could feel Snape beneath her robes, shifting in approval. She hadn’t exactly discussed it with him but he had mentioned that sometimes rumors had a way of greasing the wheels, so to speak. She’d just successfully managed to show that Draco had her unconditional support. He blew out a breath and kissed her on the forehead, bringing her in close for a seemingly innocent hug.
“When I when, Granger,” he muttered into her hair. “I’m going to ream that pussy so hard that Snape’s going to have to put an elastic spell on it so he can get it back into shape.”
She shivered and then chuckled at the threat. This would definitely be worth it.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, the proposal is about to start.”
“That’s my cue,” she said softly, kissing him on the cheek once more. “Good luck.”
He grinned and kissed her hand as she pulled away. “Don’t need it.”
She quickly made her way up to the section where Harry was. He’d left a seat open beside him and Ron and the meaning was not lost on her. The Golden Trio was united again, in front of the world, and backing the cause of one Draco Malfoy. She owed Harry big time for this.
“Ladies and Gentlemen of the Wisengamet,” Draco began in a smooth cultured drawl that made Hermione’s knickers instantly damp. “I’m here today to propose new a new dragon legislature that will have an effect on generations to come. I ask only that you hear my full proposal before you ask questions. Then I’d invite you to ask as many questions as you’d like. I want to make sure everyone understands the full extent of this bill.”
Draco’s dynamic voice filled the room, putting just the right amount of infliction on his words. His tone change from sad and melancholy to hopeful and then to purposeful as he lined out the laws proposed by Robert to preserve the dragons while still supplying the Wizarding world with valuable potions ingredients and raw materials for wands and other commodities. She knew every word by heart and he didn’t miss one of them. He never stuttered or misspoke and she’d never wanted him more. She could practically feel the power radiating off of him. Maybe that was why Snape had chosen him. He was magnificent.
She took the opportunity to look upon the faces of the attendees. Most looked like they were riveted. There were those who were skeptical and some who were downright angry. She would bet her last galleon that those were the poachers. Well, fuck them. She wanted her contract and she wanted it now. Draco was almost finished with his speech before she dared to look at Lucius. She could feel his angry stare but she refused to acknowledge it until this moment, finally ready for the confrontation in which he was powerless to do anything, lest he sign his own death warrant.
His face was twisted in a sneer so ugly she truly wondered if he’d managed to fuck a troll. It could have been any number of things that set him off but she was sure it was the scorching kiss she’d laid upon his son beforehand. And she was loving it. In fact, she turned her face into a sugary smile and nearly cackled with glee at the redness creeping up Lucius’s face. Any moment now, he’d break apart and come at her and she’d seal his fate. But Draco’s speech came to an end before she could goad him any further.
“Thank you for listening,” Draco said respectfully. “Does anyone have any questions?”
“THAT’S ABSOLUETLY PERPOSTEROUS,” Lucius bellowed.
Draco turned and stared his father dead in the face. “I’m sorry. I wasn’t aware you were still a member of the Wisengamet. Did you have a question?”
Lucius snarled. “How dare you try to put people out of jobs.”
“Only those with unsavory plans,” Draco said abruptly. “I merely wish to preserve the dragons as they are now before they go extinct and valuable materials are lost to us forever. And I propose to bring those who threaten the future of the wizarding world in whatever way to justice. Our world was almost damaged beyond repair just last year due to those who thought they could take what they wanted. I cannot stand by and watch it crumble before it has a chance to flourish again. This piece of legislature might be unimportant to most, but it is a step in the right direction. And after the horrors we all faced during the war, isn’t it time to take that step, no matter how small?”
Hermione sucked in a breath when half the room burst into applause. Harry leaned into her. “He better be careful. He’ll give Shacklebolt a run for his money.”
Hermione grinned. “That would be something.”
Harry laughed and shook his head. “Slytherins.”
She nodded and hummed. “They’re what’s for dinner.”
Harry nearly choked on his spit and just managed to get a hold of himself as the applause died down. Lucius looked like he’d been stabbed and she would like nothing more than to drive the knife in further, but a flurry of hands rose and she was intent on listening to everyone’s concerns. Draco managed to answer every question masterfully, even those that were irrelevant to the bill.
“Mr. Malfoy,” one hefty witch called out. “You were kissing Hermione Granger before the start of this, weren’t you?”
Draco gave her a warm smile. “I don’t believe that’s a question about my bill, but yes, that was Hermione Granger.”
“How did that happen?” the witch yelled, unperturbed by his gentle reprimand.
“She helped me understand the new dynamics of our war torn world in a time where I was very vulnerable. You see, I don’t believe in the doctrine of my father and his before him, but I was never able to discuss this. Hermione was the first person to forgive me for my transgressions and trust that I had changed. And for that, I owe her everything. Falling in love with her was just a bonus.”
Hermione almost fainted but managed to keep grounded. She did put her hands over her face, seemingly to hide her blush. Really, she was hiding so much more. Surely Draco had said that to gain the approval of the Wisengamet. But that was something she was NOT going to think about. Nope.
“She love ya back?” the woman called.
Draco gave her another wan smile and looked Hermione in the eyes. “I can only hope that one day I’ll be worthy of her love. Until then, I intend to do everything in my power to do right by her and this new world that we’re creating.” He looked back at the woman and bowed his head respectfully before scanning the room. “Is there anyone else with a question regarding the intricacies of my proposal?”
No one else budged and Draco turned the floor back over to the Wisengamet, who spoke amongst themselves for quite some time. Hermione sat stiff as a board, her eyes boring into the back of Draco’s head as he stood there in perfect calm. He was anything but calm, though he was a masterful actor. Her head was whirring with his last confessions, trying to make sense of them. They were truly masterful and she was sure he’d won the entire room over with them. She could feel Ron and Harry’s eyes on her, along with most of the Army. McGonagall’s little smirk was visible in her peripheral. She just couldn’t process anything else. And she wasn’t sure she wanted to know if those words had been the truth or not. Her thoughts screeched to a halt when the Minister raised his hand.
“All those in favor of voting this proposal in, say I.”
Hermione had to keep her jaw from dropping as all but one member of the Wisengamet said I.
“All opposed?”
The one nay came from a beady eyed bloke that she remembered her Master fingering as a potion smuggler. She could understand why he wouldn’t want this legislation passed.
“Then I hereby declare this legislature law. We shall discuss its implementation in one week. Everyone is dismissed.”
Hermione barely felt her feet move as she glided toward Draco, nearly tackling him to the ground. It felt as if a thousand-pound weight had been lifted from her shoulders. The lightness in his face was unmistakable as he picked her up and spun her around before giving in to a fiery kiss that had her seeing stars. He was free.
They were free.
AN: A sleepless night means you get TWO updates (although not on the same story. This is where I plug my other fic, Three Conditions). I offer them as an apology. This one probably only has a few more chapters left. When I first started it, I was sure it was only going to be 8-9 chapters long, and that was if I got long winded! 53 chapters later, I've managed to shock myself. As always, thanks to everyone who reviewed. I can't tell you how much better they've made my day when they come in. Keep them coming and let me know how I'm doing. Until next time... love you guys!
