Chapter 53-
Draco fluffed the hair gel through his hair with careless, hasty movements, all the while grunting at his reflection. He didn't really know why he was bothering to make himself presentable today, he really wasn't in the mood. But maybe if it just hadn't had a daily routine for the past several years, he would have overlooked it that day. What was the point in this anymore? If looking your best got you no where, this daily preparation was utterly useless.
He scowled and washed his hands, looking over his work to pinpoint any mistakes he may had made.
"What's gotten your knickers in a bunch?" Blaise asked after he had watched Draco for several minutes.
"As if I would pour my heart out to you, Zanbini." Draco grumbled while adjusting his tie into the proper position.
"Are you nervous?" Blaise's tone was teasing. "Are you going to be that upset being paired up with Parkinson?"
"How do you-"
"Oh, come on, Drac, I know a brush off when I see one. And who really would want HER when there are so many other fish out in the sea?!"
"There's only three in Hogwarts that are available to me." Draco informed. "Pansy is the only one that I know that Father would choose. He doesn't know the Greenglasses personally like he does the Parkinsons." He cleared his throat uncomfortably. "I really can't see how Father would NOT pick her."
"Man, I really love my life." Blaise breathed in smugly. "I can choose which ever one I want- provided she also has the freedom to choose and is not forced into a race to snag the purest one out there." He leaned against the edge of the sink. "Well, that, and so long as she's not a mudblood." He shifted his eyes to Draco, awaiting a response from him.
Draco snorted. "Your implication sailed right over my head, Zanbini." He muttered, grabbing his bag of toiletries.
"I highly doubt that it did, Malfoy." He sang out as Draco threw himself at the bathroom door, making it swing out into the hall.
He stalked angrily back to the Slytherin common room, all the while thinking about Dahlia rejecting him. What girl would reject him; the purest boy of all?! What girl in their right mind would refuse him? It should be he who refused her. He was Draco Malfoy! Malfoys always got what they wanted! ALWAYS!
And what he wanted was her. What he should have was her.
She had some nerve! Draco didn't understand why she had done it! He had done nothing (that he knew of) to make her do such a thing. All he had wanted to do was take their friendship to a new level. That couldn't be bad, could it? He had thought she liked him the same way as he liked her. She hadn't seemed to had minded his two kisses, and they had even shared personal stories with each other. So what was her problem this year? Why did she say that she couldn't kiss him? What made her think that? Was she that concerned over his upcoming betrothal?
He tossed the bag into his trunk with a grumble and gathered up the books he would need for that day. After Dahlia ran out on him the night before, he really didn't feel like doing much but mope around in his dorm room. He was upset, embarrassed, and mortified. Thankfully, he had no classes with the Gryffindors that day. Those awkward moments between them would have to come another time.
At breakfast, he chose to ignore any of the Gryffindors, in fear to have to face the girl his pulse would began to beat rapidly at just the sight of her. He picked at his meal, absorbed in his self pity. That is until he felt someone's hand set upon his thigh. He looked to his right, where Pansy had sat herself. The place Vincent usually sat at.
Where was he anyway? He and Gregory were both absent, Draco now just noticing this.
"You look troubled, Draco." Pansy said, poking her lip out in a pout. "What's wrong?" Her hand tapped his thigh.
"Remove your hand." He ordered coldly before take a sip of his milk.
Pansy looked hurt, but she obliged. "You'll have to get used to me." She told him bluntly.
"Why is that?" He purposely didn't look at her. Eventually she'd take the hint. He hoped anyway.
"You aren't thick. You know why."
"Counting the snakes before the eggs hatch, hmm, Parkinson?" Blaise asked amusingly, never allowing a moment to embarrass Draco pass.
"It's quite obvious." Pansy said smugly. "Draco's going to be mine. And now he's just playing hard to get; pretending to have no interest in me at all." She flicked her hair flirtatiously.
Draco pursed his lips in annoyance. "I don't belong to anyone, Parkinson!" He spat, getting up from the table. "I am not some slab of freaking meat to gnaw on!"
Blast this arranged marriage rubbish! He thought, as he grumpily made his way to the first class of the day. He'd be there a bit early, but he didn't care so long as he wasn't in Pansy's presence.
Until he started Hogwarts, he hadn't gave the arranged marriage much of a thought. He had been raised strictly to do as Father said, but now that he was beginning to think for himself, now that he had been given the chance to think for himself, Draco decided that having his future mate chosen for him strictly for breeding, as if he was some kind of prized animal, made him completely disgusted.
But what would happen to him if he refused to follow the rules? If he abandoned all his Father's laws? If he decided that he deserved better than some girl who just wanted him for his name, wealth, and purity? A girl who didn't understand him, nor possibly ever would? Who never would like him for him?
What was the point in being the Malfoy Heir if he didn't get what he wanted? What was the point in being rich and powerful if he had to do whatever everyone told him to?
Maybe Draco was tired of it all. Tired of being Father's image of the Perfect Pureblooded Slytherin. Tired of everyone planning his life besides himself. Maybe he was sick of not being allowed to make his own choices in life. Maybe it is he who should carve his own path instead of everyone else. Not his blood. Not his name. Not his Father, and certainly not some wife he'd be forced to marry.
What would happen if he suddenly decided to rebel? If he didn't comply to the orders he was given? What really could happen to him? Father couldn't disown him- He'd never let the name fold under, and his parents couldn't have anymore children. Draco had power there, he knew that.
But could he bring shame down onto the Malfoy name? The name he had been taught to respect and honour? Could he shame his own name just to get what he wanted in life? To get what he deserved in life?
Draco clenched his fists in disturbance. Screw the world!
He decided it then. He'd go after what he wanted, and wouldn't stop until he had it. Father would just have to learn how to deal with it and had no choice in the matter. Draco was the sole heir of his Father's name, and there was not a thing that could be done about it. It was time he learned to be a man. And proper men didn't follow orders unless it were for good reason. Draco couldn't think of any legitimate reason to be the Malfoy Puppet anymore, and he refused to be it for a moment longer.
The next morning, Draco paid the owl that delivered the Daily Prophet. The main article startled him so much, that he had sprayed a mouthful of pumpkin juice all over it.
'Sirius Black; Confirmed Innocent From Murder Charges Against Muggles'
-
Sirius Black, who has previously been charged for the accessory in the murders of his former friends, James and Lily Potter, and also the actual murders of Peter Pettigrew and several Muggles, has now been proven innocent. With enough evidence to back it, apparently Mr. Black had been framed all these years by none other than Peter Pettigrew, the man who had been believed to be dead and murdered after faking his own death.
Mr. Black has now been freed of any and all charges. After a short interview, the humble sole Heir of The Noble House of Black has said that he plans on buying some new robes, eating enough home cooked food for a lifetime, and taking a long, hot bath.
Peter Pettigrew, a now proven follower of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named (by even sporting the mark of Him), has been sentenced to life in Azkaban. He will be transported sometime this evening.
Draco wasn't the only one that was shocked by the article, it was the talk of day. The once believed Death Eater, Sirius Black, had actually never been one. How many conversations had Draco overheard of his Father's, where none of them could believe that Sirius Black had been a Death Eater? Many doubted it, but nothing else explained his betrayal to the Potters.
Draco knew that the Pettigrew man had been a follower, but even the Death Eaters thought he was dead, and none could believe that he had truly tracked down Sirius Black, a man even Father admitted had been very intelligent, especially compared to the whimpering Pettigrew.
Sirius Black came to Hogwarts that day to speak to Professor Lupin, who was his friend, proudly sitting as a guest at the Head Table. Students were still wary of him, but since he didn't have the Dark Lord's mark(to which he would proudly show to anyone who was still in doubt), Draco knew there was nothing to worry about with the man.
It was then discovered that Sirius Black was Harry's Godfather, another reason for the man to come to Hogwarts for a visit. Draco found that interesting. Harry would probably like that. Godfathers were unrelated uncles. They were also 100 times more fun than Fathers.
Or at least his own Godfather was; when he wasn't in his overly strict teaching mood.
"Unacceptable." Professor Snape tossed Draco's finished Transfigurations homework onto his desk after dinner. "You'll do it over until it's correct."
"But, sir-"
Professor Snape lifted an eyebrow. "Do you want the Gryffindors to win another House Cup this year? I certainly don't!"
Draco sighed. Why did he have to give much care into the House Cup? "I'll do it over." He mumbled.
"Good man." Professor Snape patted the boy's back approvingly. "I suggest the book 'Transfigure Your Figure' by Alice Poppyhen. Fascinating read."
"Thanks." He said quietly.
"Something wrong?"
"Not much."
"I noticed you're a bit quiet lately. Could it be because of the expecting announcement of your marital status?"
Draco shrugged. "I guess so."
"Do you have a favorite in mind, Draco?" Professor Snape asked gently.
"Yes." Draco answered, knowing he could share about anything with the man. He then snorted. "Forbidden fruit though."
Professor Snape nodded. "Thought so. Certain red headed Gryffindor?"
Draco clenched his jaw in an effort not to let his Godfather know that he had guessed correctly. He wondered how he knew about the feelings he had for Dahlia.
"You'd honestly be surprised, Draco, on how many Snakes have fallen for a Lion."
"Not many." Draco muttered.
"Au contraire." Professor Snape drawled musingly. "Things have taken such a sharp turn recently."
