The Dark Lord Voldemort is defeated by Harry Potter but not before Antonin Dolohov carries out a plan to destroy Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Matt Santini is the only survivor and awakens from a coma a year later. He begins his final year of education at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, alongside Hermione Granger, Neville Longbottom, Ginny Weasley, and Luna Lovegood. Hermione ends her relationship with Ron after a brutal attack. Hermione and Matt begin a friendship and she is targeted by Dolohov in an assassination attempt. Matt and Hermione’s friendship evolves into romantic feelings and while Ron attempts to force Hermione back into a relationship, the couple dueled Ron, his girlfriend Padma Patil and Pansy Parkinson in front of the press. The class of 1991 attends a commemoration banquet to honor the end of the Second Wizarding War and fall of Tom Riddle, but while at the banquet Dementors attack as we begin the next chapter of 7th Year Student.
As a second round of food began to appear, alongside desserts the hall seemed to really come alive with lively chatter, reminiscing of the war, and how good things had been since Voldemort had been defeated for the last time. Things seemed to be very lively and oddly happy. Suddenly, the din of the room was stilled, the air turned cold and the light streaming in from the outside was darkened. The fireplaces had gone out, and a fog rolled out of them from the sudden cold. Harry and Hermione looked at one another, only one thing brought that sort of feeling of uneasiness and sadness: Dementors.
There were screams as the windows shattered inwards, a group of grotesque, hooded creatures flowed in from the now ruined stained glass. At the back of the hall, the large oak doors burst inwards, sending wood, glass, and marble shards everywhere. A group of black cloaked and silver masked Death Eaters marched into the banquet hall. Students and staff alike drew wands and began to fire spells but were quick to duck behind cover. Several silver patronus charms appeared, only silvery shields though, to hold back the Dementors.
“Students! Follow your teachers!” McGonagall yelled over the racket, ushering younger students out of the hall quickly. Professors Flitwick, Sprout, and Slughorn were all helping their respective houses to get clear of the fight. The younger first and second year students were frightened and screaming as they evacuated.
The head table did not waste any time, the entire group stood to fight, threw spells, and attempted to keep the Dementors at bay. However, a second group of Death Eaters entered, followed by their leader, Antonin Dolohov. The new group began attacking the head table only, throwing spell after spell towards Harry and the others. Matt and Hermione ducked under the table but were still exposed, throwing spells out from under it. One blasted the floor between them, and both had to shield themselves from debris.
“We can’t fight them like this!” Matt said, looking around the dais frantically.
“What do you propose we do?” Harry asked.
“Help me flip the table.” Came Matt’s reply. He crouched and pressed up with his shoulder on the edge and the others mimicked his movements. A moment later the entire table crashed to its side, providing them with a moment to catch their breath.
“Now what?” Hermione asked as she threw a stunning spell across the hall.
“I don’t know, I’m making this up as I go.” Matt said with a shrug and looked over the edge of the table. Kingsley and Aberforth were engaged in a duel with a thin Death Eater with long pitch-black hair and a gaunt face.
“That’s Rodolphus Lestrange.” Hermione breathed, slightly panicked sounding.
“That’s the bastard that was married to the bitch who tortured you?” Matt asked, watching as Lestrange dueled both the only surviving Dumbledore and the Minister of Magic. Hermione nodded. Matt glared and stared to twirl his wrist. He recognized the wizard from reading past issues of the Daily Prophet over the summer. “Electrify!” he cried out and a bolt of yellow lightning shot from the end of his wand. Lestrange ducked the spell just in time and a chunk of the table in front of Matt exploded. He was forced back down behind it as Harry and the others were popping up and firing spells and shield charms.
“I’ll deal with him for you Hermione!” Ron said with a smirk. Padma looked annoyed as Ron leapt up from behind the table and attempted to vault over it.
“Ron, no!” Hermione cried but was too late to stop him. Ron was struck in the chest by a stunning spell and his arms flailed wildly as he collapsed. Matt winced as he saw Ron’s body dive face first into a giant multitiered chocolate cake. The cake and Ron fell to the floor and Ron did not get up again.
A scream came from the back of the hall as one of the Dementors had picked up a middle-aged witch with blonde hair and dark eyes, who had come to pay respects and lowered its hood.
“Patronuses!” Harry said and there were nods from Dean, Seamus, Luna, Neville, and Hermione.
“Yeah…about that…” Matt said with a shiver.
“What is it?” Hermione asked, a slight edge to her voice.
“I can’t produce a patronus…” Matt admitted.
“What?! And you’re only telling me this now?” Harry was clearly frustrated.
“It never came up in class! I haven’t been able to, not since I woke up, not enough happy memories…”
“Matthew…” Hermione began, she moved over to him, keeping herself crouched, and took his hand into hers. “Look at me, you do have happy memories. Think of all the good times we’ve had this year, about…us…about me.”
Matt nodded and closed his eyes for a moment, concentrating on all the good memories he had with Hermione and the others. The first time he met her on the steps outside the entrance hall, the trip to Diagon Alley, their train ride to school, their first kiss outside the Shrieking Shack in Hogsmeade and more flooded his mind.
“Alright, let’s do this!”
The entire group stood up and with a single collective cry yelled.
“Expecto Patronum!”
Several Dementors swooped towards them as Neville, Hannah, Padma, and Dean produced shielding Patronus charms. However, a stag, a horse, a pair of otters, and a jackrabbit bounded across the hall. Dementors fled from the powerful charms, most being knocked back through the windows or out of the hall itself from the front doors. Once they had gone, the entire group behind the table turned and looked at Matt and Hermione, who were both looking elsewhere, finding the floor and ceiling to be remarkably interesting at that particular moment.
“Well, that was…er…unexpected.” Matt said, having been keenly aware of the fact that his Patronus now matched Hermione’s. A blasting charm smashed into the table, forcing Neville, Hannah, Padma, and Dean to jump onto the floor and enter the battle properly, each of them firing spells, Neville and Hannah working in tandem to fire spells or throw up shield charms, respectively. Padma moved over to Ron’s unconscious form, laying in the cake, and stood over him shooting spells at anyone in a Death Eater mask who got too close.
Seamus, Luna, and Rolf slipped out and joined the fight as well, casting spells and shields as they battled their way through the crowd, giving back-up to those who were struggling and taking on some of the more prominent Death Eaters one on one. Matt recognized Augustus Rookwood, from his mugshot in the 1996 Daily Prophet, as he squared off against Dean and Seamus.
Luna started to struggle fighting Travers, who had escaped Azkaban along with Rookwood, Lestrange , Dolohov, and Macnair. Ginny could not stand back and jumped the table, landing and rolling in a somersault to pop up crouched, stunning Travers along the way. The back of the hall Hagrid was fighting with Macnair, the Death Eater swinging his axe, knowing Hagrid was resistant to spells.
“Yer not gettin’ me again Macnair!” Hagrid shouted, and grabbed the Death Eaters wrist, wrenching it with his massive hands. There was an audible crack as Macnair screamed, his wrist broken, and his axe dropped. Hagrid picked him up by the back of his shirt and threw him hard, and the former Voldemort supporter crashed through one of the unbroken stained-glass windows feet first and out of the hall. Outside Macnair screamed as a Dementor swooped in near where he fell.
“These guys just don’t know when to quit do they?” Matt said and fired a spell at Dolohov, near the back of the hall, but he blocked it easily.
“This is gonna be a lot of paperwork…” Harry lamented.
“We can’t stay like this.” Hermione said as more spells smashed into the table.
“Time to take the fight to them.” Matt said agreeing with her. He readied his wand, and he looked between Hermione and Harry. The three remaining friends stood and went on the attack. They looked seamless, Harry firing a stunning spell at Rookwood, Matt throwing up a large shield charm to cover them all from spells shot from Lestrange and Dolohov, Hermione advanced on the Death Eater who cursed her and fired spell after spell at him.
Matt looked between his two compatriots, and he shouted to them.
“I’ve got a crazy idea…it might not work but it’ll give us a minute…” he said. Harry and Hermione closed ranks, the three of them stood back-to-back and Matt waved his wand, creating his false smoke cloud around them. “Homenum Duplicare” Matt muttered. Out of the cloud strode multiple versions of Matt, Hermione, and Harry, all going in different directions, firing false spells, and causing general confusion and havoc on the Death Eater’s part.
The trio was able to split up from the smoke cloud as the real Harry joined Luna and Ginny in battling Travers. Hermione went for Lestrange on her own and Matt weaved in and out of the tables, heading for Dolohov. Rodolphus abandoned his fight with the Minister and Aberforth by levitating several large tables and throwing them at the pair and slipped away from them. Hermione saw her opening and tripped him up. Lestrange looked angered as he quickly got to his feet.
“My wife should have finished you off, filthy Mudblood!” Lestrange spat and Hermione fired a stunning spell at him. Lestrange retaliated by sending a Crucio her way, but she blocked the spell with a shield charm before ducking another blast and lighting his cloak on fire. Lestrange bellowed and shook off the garment before spinning around as Hermione went on the offensive. She fired spell after spell at the Death Eater, Rodolphus managed to dodge or block most as she backed him up almost to the dais.
As Hermione fought Rodolphus Lestrange, Matt went straight for Dolohov. He was seeing red, knowing the Death Eater in front of him was the one responsible for Hermione’s injury and the death and destruction of his own school and teachers, people he cared about. Matt had thrown everything away to fight to protect his school and failed. And the person responsible for beating him was mere feet away.
Matt fired spell after spell at Dolohov, intent on taking him down. Not even Matt himself was sure if he would spare the Death Eater after everything. His emotions were far from in check and with each spell his rage seemed to make them hit harder. Dolohov was having a tough time stopping and dodging the powerful blasts the younger wizard was throwing at him.
“I see you’ve learned a thing or two since we last met!” Dolohov sneered.
“See you haven’t!” Matt snarled and levitated some broken glass at Antonin Dolohov. The Death Eater threw up a heavy shield, turning the sharp projectiles to sand. Matt grinned. He had been counting on that. Suddenly, his wand waved, and the sand flew straight into Dolohov’s eyes. The Death Eater snarled but pressed his attack and hit Matt with a Reducto and sent him falling backwards.
Just as Dolohov was advancing on Matt, glowering over him, a spell shot over his shoulder, barely missing him. He turned and growled.
“No more killing innocent children for you!” Molly Weasley shouted as she stood defiant. Matt was shocked at Molly’s sudden change.
“Oh? And you’re gonna stop me are you, Blood Traitor?” Dolohov asked and turned to face Molly fully. He grinned and fired a couple of spells, but Matt could see the Death Eater was holding back. Molly was not, however. Mrs. Weasley was treating Dolohov exactly as she had Bellatrix Lestrange, fighting her all. And then, Dolohov channeled his next attack. Matt could see it coming, it was not a known spell movement to him, but he was sure it was going to be bad.
“Protego Maxima!” Matt cried from the floor as he rolled to his side. The shield charm erupted between Molly and Dolohov at the same time Dolohov shouted something and a purple flame shot from the end of his wand. It impacted the shield and broke through; Molly had no time to dodge as the spell collided with her. She gasped, her eyes grew wide, and she crumpled to the floor. Arthur Weasley shouted for his wife and immediately was at her side.
“You bastard!” Matt snarled as he got to his feet and fired off a blasting curse at Dolohov. Dolohov ducked it though as it blew out the nearest window, stained glass rained outside the hall and a Dementor that had been cast out, slipped back into the mayhem.
“What’s the matter, like mommies, do you?” Dolohov taunted Matt as they fired spells and circled one another.
While Matt and Hermione were fighting Dolohov and Lestrange respectively, Harry was fighting his hardest against Augusts Rookwood. The pock-marked and greasy-haired Death Eater was an accomplished opponent. Harry had joined Luna and Ginny in fighting him, despite Harry’s reputation, Rookwood was not intimidated.
“You may have beat The Dark Lord, Potter, but you’re only human. You can be beaten!” Rookwood snarled as he dueled with the three.
“You’re not nearly as talented as Tom Riddle, Augustus.” Harry shot back. “But you’re a good warm-up.” Harry fired a pair of spells back-to-back, and Rookwood was forced to take cover. The table he ducked behind was quickly levitated out of the way, and Augustus was forced back onto his feet and firing spells at the two girls and Harry. A quick shield charm from Harry and Luna and Ginny had fired stunning spells at Rookwood. A third from Harry and the Death Eater was launched backwards.
Hermione looked like she was ready to murder Lestrange. The pair were sending spells at one another that were either ricocheting off each other or rebounding off the walls, crashing into Dementors and Death Eaters alike. Hermione even managed to catch one or two she had not recognized off guard with an angled shield.
Out of the corner of her eye, she caught sight of Matt throwing up his shield to protect Molly and an idea crossed Hermione’s mind. She grinned as another of Lestrange’s spells shot towards her. She stood perfectly still, only throwing up her shield at the last second, before collapsing it down around the spell Lestrange had fired. She held at her wand tip, a glowing ball of yellow and blue light, pulsating. Hermione Granger flicked her wrist, and the ball shot towards Lestrange at a high rate of speed. He barely had time to duck it before her wrist was twirling.
Hermione never spoke a word as her wrist twirled around, before shooting off a white-hot blast of lightning from the tip of wand. Lestrange screamed out as he was hit by the electricity, the sparking energy wound its way over his body, and he writhed in pain. The Death Eater spasmed as he tried to find a way out of his pain, and he did. As Rodolphus Lestrange spun about the hall, a figure loomed over him. Having sensed his fear and panic, the Dementor smelled a fresh meal. The creature lowered its hood to reveal its scabbed and deformed face. The perfectly circular hole where the mouth resided was wide open.
Rodolphus Lestrange screamed, twitched, convulsed, and spasmed as the Dementor’s mouth closed over his own and began to suck. Lestrange could do nothing as his wand slipped from his grasp. His last thoughts were the worst memories of his entire life played out before his mind’s eye. The Dementor drew back, a small blue-white, dim, light appearing from Rodolphus’ lips. The creature immediately swallowed the light as Lestrange convulsed one last time and collapsed, alive but a husk.
Hermione watched and as Rodolphus’ soul was consumed she turned away, clamping her eyes shut. As she reopened them, she saw Harry, Luna, and Ginny vanquish Rookwood. Matt was back on his feet and staring down Dolohov. Suddenly, Dolohov made a slashing motion with his wand. Hermione’s eyes went wide, and she cleared the distance between herself and Matt in almost no time. She dove at Matt and only barely was able to tackle him, the purple flame sailing over their heads and out of a nearby window.
“You’re not getting my boyfriend too, you monster!” Hermione snarled and cast a Full-Body bind curse at him. Dolohov’s body went rigid, his arms snapped to his sides, and he toppled over.
“Thanks, love.” Matt said as the two stood up. He walked over to Dolohov and stepped on the older wizard’s wand. Matt smiled as he leaned into the step and a snapping sound could be heard as he crushed Dolohov’s wand. He stood over Antonin Dolohov and then looked down. His mahogany brown eyes bored into the Death Eater every ounce of hatred he had. And then, Matt found it.
He could see it, an aura around the Death Eater, one that surrounded his body, but also a small thread penetrated it. Dolohov’s magic itself. As Matt glared and concentrated on the fallen Death Eater, he could sense it, feel it, Antonin Dolohov’s magic. Things clicked together in his mind, he could see what he could do, knew it, as if by instinct. Matt waved his wand and released Dolohov.
“What do you think you’re doing? You’re beaten anyway!” Dolohov tried to claim.
“No, I’m not. I can see it, your magic.” Matt said as Dolohov tried to crawl away. Matt was having none of it though, and he advanced on the Death Eater. “I’m going to take it.” Matt clamped his hand over Dolohov’s forearm where the Dark Mark had been burned into the Death Eater’s skin. Dolohov looked terrified and confused.
Matt glared and concentrated, finding that thread of aura that was connected to Dolohov’s magic. He pulled, and pulled, and pulled, harder, harder than he had ever willed anything. Suddenly, he felt it. He could feel the rush of magic from Antonin Dolohov into himself. Along with it came Dolohov’s entire magical history, every spell, every incantation, every cruelty he had ever committed with his wand. With every wand movement and every spell, Matt learned everything Dolohov knew about magic.
Antonin Dolohov screamed, it was horrifying, he felt his magic drain from him. It was the most painful thing he had ever experienced. It was as if a physical part of himself was ripped from him. The only difference was, the Death Eater could find no visible wound or blood. There was only the pain and the feeling that something was missing from him. Matt too, cried out in pain and horror as he finally let go, having taken the entirety of Dolohov’s magic. He stumbled backwards and collapsed. Hermione caught him as he fell, and she lowered him to the floor of the banquet hall.
Desperate, and scared, not knowing what happened to him, Dolohov lunged for Matt’s own wand and snatched it from his hand. He tried to cast his signature spell with it, slashing the wand, but nothing happened. Antonin Dolohov tried everything he knew, but no spell would work, even the simplest charms he had mastered decades ago would not function. The Death Eater shook violently and collapsed to his knees screaming in fear and agony, discarding Matt’s wand. Hermione lazily flicked her wrist and Matt’s wand shot into her hand as she held him.
Kingsley strode over to the couple as Harry hauled Dolohov to his feet, binding his wrists together. Several more Aurors had shown up, as well as Harry’s boss, Gawain Robards. Statements were given to all who participated in the battle. Hermione and Matt were sitting huddled together; Matt looked like he did just before his breakdown in McGonagall’s office.
“That was quite some magic you did.” Kingsley said as he sat down across from the couple.
“Yeah…I didn’t know that was possible…” Matt’s voice sounded hollow as Hermione rubbed his back comfortingly.
“Neither did I.” Kingsley replied, as Matt looked up at him in shock. “But I have heard of it. It’s an incredibly rare form of magic if I’m not mistaken.”
“What is it?” Matt asked, looking at his hands as if he did not know what to do with them.
“I believe, you’re what they call a Magic Breaker. A rare ability passed down through certain familial bloodlines. You seem to have one of them in you.”
“What did I do?” Matt’s voice was small and scared.
“You literally took his magic from him. A sentence, for a Death Eater, worse than death, worse than the Dementor’s Kiss. He’s now what he hates the most, a Muggle. Not a bit of magic in him.”
“Then…where did it go?”
“I think, you already know the answer.” Kingsley replied.
“It’s in me…” Matt shuddered with revulsion.
“Yes, but, even though his power is yours, now, only you can determine how best to use it. For now, though, get some rest. I hear you’ve got exams coming up in a few weeks’ time. Don’t want to miss out on all those lovely tests. And besides, you’ll need some N.E.W.T.s where you’re going.” Minister Shacklebolt said with a smile.
“I don’t…”
“We’ll talk again soon, Mr. Santini. I’ll owl you.” And with that the Minister for Magic strode out of the banquet hall.
“Why couldn’t this have been like every other year and waited until after exams?” Hermione quipped as Matt leaned against her and gave her a chuckle. Hermione smiled; they would be ok after all.
