Chapter 54: Sad Goodbyes
An exhausted Tom Riddle Jr. staggered out of the bedroom, leaving a giggling Flamina. "I wish I would have asked for two nights Tom." Tom shook his head, thanking his lucky stars that it hadn't been two nights. He might not have survived her sexual appetite. That horror was over and now he was on his way back to Hermione. Granted, he had always loved sex, but to keep up with a tireless woman was not something he had planned on. Cuddling and taking a break also hadn't been on her agenda. He would never voice this out-loud to anyone, but he had enjoyed those moments with Hermione when they would lie in each others arms and talk after making love. It would make him look soft to his followers.
Tom ran down the stairs and out of the house before he ended up back in bed with the insatiable Goddess. Apparating from place to place, he finally was back at the manor. He spoke to no one and made his way to his chambers. The Dark Lord dropped into bed; clothes and shoes still on, and fell quickly into a deep sleep.
Sirius came through the door watching Hermione throw things into a suitcase. She didn't look up, even though she knew he was standing there. He quietly closed the door so he wouldn't startle baby Thomas. The baby, oblivious to all of the tension in the room just babbled in his crib.
Sirius hesitated, but continued with what was on his mind, " Hermione, why do you have to leave? I don't want you to leave. Please don't go. Don't let that prat James make this decision for you." Hermione acted as if she didn't hear what he'd said. She busily kept haphazardly folding clothes. "You need to think about the baby, Hermione."
"I am Sirius. It's just time we left. It's best not to be where I'm not wanted. I also don't feel safe here. This truly isn't where we belong." She looked up to meet his eyes.
"You're going to him aren't you?" Sirius questioned her with a sneer on his face.
Hermione looked down to her packing again. "I now know that we will be safer with Thomas's father."
"But he's a bloody Death-Eater! How could a baby possibly be safe around them?" His voiced raised in anger startled the baby who began to fuss. "So Dumbledore's right?
Hermione glared at Sirius. "No, Dumbledore is not always right. In fact, he's quite often on the end of making terrible decisions whether it's his business or not."
She was fed up with everyone telling her what she should be doing and how it should be done. "Also, I know this Bloody Death Eater and I'm very certain that he won't hurt me or Thomas." She nudged past Sirius knocking him out of her way. Her temper was rising and she wasn't sure what would happen if she lost her temper again. With how upset she had been at Dumbledore last night, she didn't trust her power of patience right now. She had plenty of experience where her magic had run wild, but never in the presence of her baby. Thomas was her world, and there was no way that she would threaten the tiny babe with out of control magic like a child.
"Sirius, you need to listen to me," Hermione sat down on the bed and patted a spot indicating for Sirius to sit next to her. He hesitated, but reluctantly sat down next to Hermione. The hurt and confusion on Sirius's face was clearly there, and she wasn't sure she would be able to erase those feelings from him. He wanted things from her that she couldn't give him. Her heart would never belong to Sirius; it had always been with Tom ever since they had first made love.
"There's something I need to make sure that you understand before I leave." She hated saying the same thing over and over again to the Marauder, but she knew the importance of what she was saying, "Don't ever, ever be alone with Wormtail. He can't be trusted and don't believe anything that comes out of his mouth. He is a danger to you." Hermione could see the disbelief in his eyes still when she warned him about his friend. She had never felt like he had taken any of her previous forewarnings seriously.
"How do you know all of this? This whole time you've had these mysterious messages for us like you know what is going to happen in the future."
Hermione was done with it all. Messing with time be damned!
"That's because I do Sirius!"
The words seemed to float in the air before her, suspended, waiting for someone to draw them back into a dark hole. The words had come out before she even had time to think about what she was saying. All along she had been warned about messing things up in the past that could affect her future. Well, that is exactly why she had traveled back in time. She hated her future and wanted to change things for everyone.
"What does that mean exactly that you do know? Are you are a Seer? Have you heard a prophecy that you'd like to share?" His condescending tone indicated what he was truly thinking, along the lines that she was full of shit. Hell, even to her it sounded like a load of crock.
Hermione gave a huge sigh, "I can't go into it, but I do know."
Sirius reached out and pulled her into his arms and gave her a tight hug. "I wish you would reconsider. I'll miss you so much."
Hermione once again was so full of guilt. She never would have imagined this side of Sirius even being within him. "Sirius, please know I never wanted to hurt you in any way. You have been so kind and loving to both Thomas and me. There's just no way…" She could feel the tears sliding down her face.
"Shh", he hushed her holding her even tighter to his chest. "I know love." He tilted her head up so he could look into her eyes, "But you need to promise me something. What ever happens, you'll come back here if things don't work out. I'll be here." Hermione could tell even Sirius was close to tears. "Remember love, a part of my heart is going with you."
Hermione looked at Sirius, tears in her eyes and regret in her heart. Never in a million years would she have guessed that she would learn to love Sirius the way that she did; the problem was, she loved Tom more. Sirius had surprisingly been the Marauder that had proven to be so tolerable and loyal. James Potter, after all, had been as big of a bully as Severus Snape always accused him of being.
"Promise me that you will be careful. I'm going to be worried every minute of every day." She could clearly see that he meant what he said.
"I can take care of myself. Really I can!"
Sirius smiled at her insistence and caressed her cheek. "You are a very powerful witch, I've seen it. And from the look of Dumbledore after your little talk last night, I could see that you got your point across to him."
"That's something else Sirius, you can't trust him either. He's done some terrible things. He doesn't always have the side of the Light's best interest at heart." She hoped that he realized the seriousness of what she was sharing with him. "Believe me, I learned this lesson the hard way, again and again."
"There's something else we need to talk about. When I came here I was wearing something. Do you still have it? Please tell me you still have it?" She stood up and started her nervous pacing. "Gods I hope that it's not James or Lily that has it."
He stood up and rushed from the room. "Be right back." He yelled from the hallway.
Hermione trying to stem her jumbled emotions and kept packing her tiny suitcase. She smiled as she looked over at Thomas who happened to be playing with his chubby baby toes. His cute little sounds of delight warmed her heart. There was also a sense of freedom, knowing soon that she would be introducing her son to his father. She was confident that Tom would not harm her or her son. He wanted them both.
Sirius was leaning against the door looking at her, holding a red pouch. Opening it up he dumped something into his hand, the time turner. It was all in one piece, in good condition, and by all appearances still usable. Holding it up he walked over to her and draped it around her neck. "This is yours."
Hermione reached up and clasped it into her hand holding onto it tightly. She smiled feeling it once again in her possession.
"I don't think I even want to know anything about it. Do I?" Sirius lightly said.
"Let's just say it helped me get around. It brought me to you." They stood closely together, "These last few months have been wonderful. Thank you Sirius. I hope that you will find love with someone else. I truly mean this, I really do."
He gave her one of his lopsided grins, "I know you do." He reached out taking her face into his hands. Tilting her head up, his lips came down on hers giving her one, long, last kiss before she left. The emotion behind the kiss said everything. It was wistful and sad, but full of passion. After the kiss, no goodbyes were spoken. Sirius slipped out of the room leaving her to her packing.
