Chapter 53
Beta'd by Tenchi (love you, woman!)
Lying curled up in bed with Tom before the sun rose fully, Harry was looking out the window, but relishing in the feeling of his lover holding him. This was good, it really was. The fuzzies were still there, no doubt about that, but they seemed to be lessening in degree. At least he felt clearer than he had so far. For him, that was a relief. It meant, maybe, things would go back to normal soon and he could continue on with what he had been doing. Another good thing. There was too much riding on what he did for him to be out of the game for long. Once he was with it enough to go back to Hogwarts, he would have Barty fill him in then get back to it.
Resting his head on Tom's chest, listening to the reassuring beat of the man's heart, he asked, quietly, “Barty's not having any problems on his end? Dumbledore hasn't tried anything?”“From what Snape's said, and the messages passed along to me from Barty, all's fine there. Dumbledore's tried once, as we would expect, but Snape shut him down quickly. They've made sure to put something in place so if he does try again, Barty gets plenty of warning and can protect himself. It'll also alert Snape. The only complaint I'm hearing is boredom from Barty. That's to be expected as well. He'll manage,” Tom told him with a grin, running his fingers through the young man's hair and giving it a soft tug.Smiling at having his hair pulled, Harry nodded, “Yeah, the boredom I can see. It would make me mental to have to be cooped up in that room alone for a week. He'll probably be grateful to get back here and have something to do.”“He will,” Tom snorted, smiling a little. Continuing to run his fingers through Harry's hair, he gave it an occasional tug as he did.Grinning just a little bigger, Harry asked, “What do we have to do today?”“Besides you taking it easy?” Tom asked, looking down at the young man, eyebrow arched. Seeing the grin there, he just shook his head, “There is some legislation I have to go over. Some we do want to go through. Others need to be killed in some way. I'm sorting through that and will decide how to go about it. Beyond that, I want to see about trying to trace the Elder Wand. At least start. That's going to involve me getting in contact with a few people that know about wand lore.” Letting his hand drift down, he began to rub the back of Harry's neck. “For you, I want some help with the legislation. At least to bounce ideas off of you. I don't think you're in any shape to formulate plans needed still. Beyond that, while Narcissa is working on you with the makeup, I want you to get her to fill you in on what she found out about the Hallows, specifically the wand. It's probably best that you have her do all three so it doesn't look too odd or have her wondering if you might know something about the others. Maybe a piece will stand out for you or Black in what she says that might ring some bells and give us a clue where to look.”“I can do that,” Harry told him with a firm nod. “When are we going to handle Wormtail?”
“Once you're back in school we'll take care of that mess,” Tom told him. “It'll be a full meeting. I want everyone to see this.”“That's fine,” Harry told him, shifting around and pressing closer to his body.“Once you’re back to normal and return to school, we need to start pressing forward with other plans as well, like the emancipation and Privet Drive. Those need to come, that's for damned sure. I'm positive Dumbledore already has something, somewhere, cooked up for Yule break. We need to cut it off at the knees and press on.” Tom sighed.“Yeah, we do,” Harry agreed. “I need to get back to school just in case he tries something else, like another of those damned visions. If that happens and Barty is there, we have a real problem.”“We do, I admit it,” Tom conceded with a nod. “I don't think he will, not with the shape you're supposedly in. You never know with him, though. Especially if he thinks he has an opportunity to get further with you. Let's give it a couple days then we'll see what we can do there. Even if you’re still slightly out of it, you'll be alone so it won't matter. Better safe than sorry there. Snape can help keep an eye on you if that's the case and make sure everyone stays away.” Glancing down at the young man again, he added, quietly, “Before we can even ponder that step, you need to have that makeup down pat so you can apply it. Have Narcissa really work with you on it.”“I will,” Harry told him with a determined nod. “I can stave off part of it until it heals by making sure I keep a shirt on. With me being a Prefect and using their bathroom, most don't see me unless one of the others walks in. Most of those don't. But I'll make sure I'm at least passable on it. I'll be sure she writes out instructions on how to layer it. If she does that, I can probably manage to figure it out if I forget something.”“Good idea! Do that,” Tom told him firmly with a nod. “Even if you can't get the hang of it, we might be able to manage something like having her apply it during the day so you'll be able to keep it on for the most part. I don't know. We'll figure out something. It shouldn't be too long, just until that burn heals enough that you can use a glamour on it.”“Yeah. Once it's good, I'll be fine,” Harry said, shifting around a little, wrapping himself tighter around Tom and shutting his eyes. Smiling, he said, quietly, “This is nice.”“It is,” Tom admitted, smiling himself and holding Harry tightly. “We don't get to spend nearly enough time together, something unavoidable with all that's going on.”“I know,” Harry sighed, shaking his head. “Hopefully, once I'm a bit better we can manage again.”“We will,” Tom assured him, resuming combing his fingers through the younger man's soft hair. “I'll make sure of it. It's just so busy right now that it's hard to make time. We need to though.”“We do,” Harry admitted with a nod. Sighing, he asked, “What time is it?”Casting a Tempus, Tom said, “We do have to get up and move soon to start, but we have a while yet to just relax.”“Good,” Harry said, smiling, shutting his eyes.
Sitting in his normal place at the desk by Tom, Harry's brow was furrowed as they went through some of the legislation that was pending, trying to figure out, while Tom explained most of what it meant to him, what might be good and what wasn't. Normally, he had no problems with this, but his befuddled state made that slightly harder than normal. It wasn't easy to process what he normally did and left him slightly baffled as to what to add.
After his lover finished, Harry shook his head then admitted, “I'm not going to be much help here. Even with your explanation I'm more than slightly lost as to what we need to do.”Snorting, a grin on his lipless mouth, Tom said, “I figured that. It's nothing to worry about, Evan. I know what I need to work with when it comes to this.” Tapping the mass of papers with his wand, they automatically sorted into two piles. Putting his hand on the largest stack, he said, “These I want to go through. I'll get with the appropriate people and make sure we get them pushed through by some means.” Pointing to the much smaller stack, he explained, “Those I want to fail. Again, I have a plan for that. I don't care what it takes, but those aren't going to get through. We'll manage, don't worry.”Relieved that Tom, as always, knew what he was doing here, Harry nodded, “Good. How far along are we? I know we were doing good with getting the anti-werewolf legislation from even being brought up.”“We're slowly moving in the direction I want,” Tom nodded, looking pleased. Sighing, he added, “The anti-werewolf legislation keeps coming. I know who's driving that chunk and we're going to have to take care of her at some point to put a stop to it. For now, I can deal with the ones trying to get it through. The source, though, is going to have to be handled eventually.”“Who's that?” Harry asked, leaning back in his seat.“Umbridge,” Tom told him, looking dour.“The same one that's in the school?” Harry inquired, eyebrows going up, eyes widening.“The same,” Tom nodded, looking sour. “She has a thing against any being that isn't human, be they part or full. It doesn’t matter. For now, she's fine. As long as she's still in the school doing what she is, I'll leave her alone as I don't want to chance anything with her there. Once she's done there I'm going to have to take steps to handle her in some way. She's becoming a serious liability, that's for damned sure. There are plenty of things I need done right now and I don't need to keep fighting the same battles over and over with her over what I need to just die. That means she needs handled in some way. I just haven't decided how that is yet is all.” Tom sighed, shaking his head.“She's a right vile piece of work, that's for damned sure,” Harry agreed, nodding. “She's doing what we want in the school, but her personality and opinions are counterproductive for anything else.”“They are, I admit it,” Tom nodded. “We need to wait, though.” Sighing, he said, “She's one that's let past history cloud her rational thinking. Right after school, when she was a low-level Ministry worker, she fell in love with a man that adored her. They were almost ready to get married when he finally admitted to being a werewolf. Unlike most people who would work with the situation and just press on, she called it off. Rather than act rationally about it, in her hurt she began to take out her anger over the situation on any form of non-human, be they werewolf, half-breed, whatever. Over the years, she's just grown worse as she's made herself so vile when it comes to her personality that no man in their right mind would want anything to do with her. That just makes the situation worse.” Stopping and shaking his head, he sighed, “She has a purpose, we know that, and we could use her for so much as she would blindly follow whoever is in power and do their bidding, but she's so counterproductive to much of what we want that I can't chance this.”Snickering, Harry said, “Just before she finishes at Hogwarts, get her into the woods and let Hagrid's spider have at her. There'll be nothing left to worry about if you do that and no one would question it. After all, everyone knows how dangerous the Forbidden Forest is.”Letting out a short bark of laughter, Tom nodded, “That's an idea! It would solve a great many problems. I don't know though. I would prefer to handle it another way so there is no question of what happened. If she just vanished, there would always be suspicion. That I don't want.”“Give her to Fenrir,” Harry chuckled, grinning bigger. “I'm sure he'd like a nice chew toy.”“And it would be poetic justice,” Tom smirked, leaning back. “That may be the way to go, actually. I don't know. If we needed to drive a point home in some way, he's one we could use. I don't know yet. We'll see. Either way, I do need to make plans on how to deal with her at some point. For now, she's fine. It's when she gets back to the Ministry that we need to worry. She'll begin with the legislation again, more than she is now, and that's not a battle we have time for, honestly.” Shaking his head, he said, “We'll work on it when the time comes. For now, she's safe where she is and doing what we need.” Straightening the stack of what he needed to get through, he pulled the top parchment off then began walking Harry through what it was and how he wanted to go about pushing it through.Paying close attention, nodding, Harry was trying to stay focused, though that wasn't the easiest task in the world. After all, this was probably something he was going to have to know about soon.
Looking at the drawing in his hands, Harry shook his head. Glancing at his godfather, he said, tone distracted, “I've seen this wand somewhere, I just don't know where! And I'm so out of it still nothing is jogging loose.”
Sliding over and sitting by his godson in a chair he conjured, Sirius looked at the drawing the young man was holding. Nodding, he said, “Yeah, that looks damned familiar, that's for sure. And it's not just because it's common either.”Brow furrowed, Harry stared at the drawing, shaking his head. Narcissa, while she went through with him how to apply the makeup, had walked him through everything she found. Thankfully, she used her initiative and tried to find what she could on the Hallows themselves. The only thing she was able to turn up was a drawing of the Elder Wand in a book about famous wands through the ages. The rest she was drawing a blank on. As he knew what the others were and had them in his possession, Harry wasn't worried about those. The wand was the only thing he didn't know where it was or who had it. After she left, he had conferred with the painting a little, but didn't get any information he didn't already have. Now he was not only certain he needed the damned thing, but that he had seen it before.Sighing, shaking his head again, Harry called one of the elves and had the creature deliver a message to Tom to have him come up when he got a chance. He made sure the man knew it wasn't important, but it was something that he thought he should see. When the elf popped away, he told Sirius, tone distracted, “Maybe he'll know where I'm getting this feeling from. I don't know. Really, I've seen this damned thing, I just don't know where! I mean, it's so intricately carved that it stands out. I just can't place it! It's going to make me mental until I do too!”Taking the drawing from Harry, Sirius looked at it then sighed, “Yeah, I swear I have too. I'm just clueless as to where that might be.” Looking at his godson, he asked, “Any hint where you might have? If you have some clue, we might be able to put it together from there.”“No, not a clue,” Harry told him with a shake of his head. “Nothing is jogging loose here on where it might be from. It's just so familiar! And I don't think it's from a picture or anything like that. I've seen the actual wand itself.”“Yeah, me too,” Sirius nodded. He was about to press on when the door opened. Glancing up, he saw Tom walk in then handed the picture back to Harry. “And I'm no help here. Without a clue to jar something loose, I can't remember either.”“What's going on?” Tom asked, looking between the two.Filling his lover in on what Narcissa found, he handed the drawing over. “We've both seen it, we just don't know where.”Looking at the drawing, Tom tried to think. Distractedly, he said, “It does seem familiar, doesn’t it?” Lifting his eyes, he looked at the two then asked, “Any hint where you may have encountered it?”“None, from either of us,” Harry grumbled, slouching in his chair with a sigh. “I'm still too wonky to process it right, so I'm not much help here.”Conjuring a chair and taking a seat, Tom stared at the wand as something tried to click, but it couldn't seem to manage. Shaking his head, he said, “I know a couple people that might be able to help. Let me get copies of this to them and see what they can find. They know quite a bit about wand lore. I'll see if they know. Even if they don't, they might be able to trace the wand through history so we can have some kind of clues as to where it might be now.” Quietly, he added, “We'll also keep an eye out to see if we can't pinpoint where we know it from. I don't know, it's somewhere we've seen.” Glancing at Black, he added, “And if Black's seen it too, it's got to be in a place many have seen it. Let me see what I can do here.” Focusing back on Harry, he asked, “Did she find anything else?”“No, nothing,” Harry told him with a shake of his head. “That she only managed from a book on wands. I'm not sure how much help one of those would be anyway, especially if it's still around.”“Probably not much,” Tom conceded with a nod. “Let me see what I can do here. Both of you keep an eye out to see if you lay eyes on it again or if something comes loose on where you might have seen it.”“We will,” Harry told him firmly.
Standing, Tom said, “I'm going to get back. I have another meeting soon. Rest, Harry. We'll worry about this later.” Seeing his young man nod, he then swept out after a nod to Black.Leaning back in his chair, Sirius chuckled, “This is going to drive me batshite until we figure out where we've seen it.”“Me too,” Harry grinned.Reaching over and giving Harry a pat on the leg, he said, “What do you say we play some cards? That might help you focus better as you have to use strategy. It should help anyway. That and it'll be fun.”“Yeah, sounds good to me,” Harry grinned, summoning an elf for some food and drinks.
Sitting at his desk in his office, Albus looked at the letter in his hands and gave a dejected sigh. This he didn't expect and would throw off so much. Bill wasn't going to try to become the Light Lord. In fact, if he read this right, he would be gone from Britain in days, heading back to Egypt after marrying Fleur. No, this wasn't good. He also didn't think that there would be any talking the young man into it either. Not from the way this was worded anyway. Which meant he had to find someone else, fast. And he didn't know who that might be. Charlie would work, but he didn't think that he could talk the young man into leaving the dragons. No, that was too big of an obsession with him. Percy wasn't possible, not with how he was. He was more grey than light anyway. Ron was too young. Fred and George weren't viable candidates either. Not only was Ginny far too young, the taint from her possession her first year would negate him even trying. That meant he had to find someone, somewhere, to try for this. And he didn't know who!
Dropping the letter on his desk, he sighed then downed some Pepper-Up so he could think. He needed the Light Lord in place, that's all there was to it. He could push for many things before his time finally came up, but this one was imperative. Someone needed to follow the path he had their world set on and take his lead in so much. It wouldn't do to have no Light Lord in place and let Tom have free rein to follow the path he was setting. No, that couldn't be allowed to happen. Who though?Thinking it over, drumming the fingers of his good hand on the table, he shook his head when only a couple names came to mind. One, Tonks, wasn't viable. Her mother's family would negate that. Kingsley was a maybe there. He didn't know though. The others he could think of were just too old. No, they wouldn't work. And he needed someone that Harry knew and trusted, at least a little. That left a very short list.Shutting his eyes and sighing, he was going to see what he could do with Kingsley. He wasn’t sure the man was perfect for this, at least the way Bill was when it came to the family line, but he thought he could manage. Whatever dodgy connections there were in the family line might be negated by all he had done up to this point. That's what he hoped anyway. Whatever was there, he was going to have to overcome, that's all there was to it. Time was limited, more than most people thought. That meant he had to really start pushing here.Shaking his head, he tried to focus. This was pressing, no doubt there, but so much else was as well. Not the least of which was dealing with Harry and getting him moving in the direction he needed the young man to go. Right now, that just wasn't possible, not with the shape the young man was in, but he had to once Harry was back on his feet. Late spring was his goal when it came to the confrontation with Tom and Harry, something he had to do. There was just no time to push his plans back here. He didn't have the time. What he also didn't have was anyone in place that could manage to get Harry going in the direction he needed him to once he was gone. No, that meant he had to do it himself. And that was hard enough.Opening his eyes, he looked at his desk. There was so much to do and so little time to accomplish it. He needed to focus on the major parts is what he needed to do. That was the Light Lord and Harry. The political part—that had to come as well but it was behind the other two. And none of them were easy. Picking up a quill, he penned a quick note to Kingsley, hoping to set up an appointment so he could go over this with the man. If he had to, he would really push it and convince him in some way without dancing over that line. How? That he didn't know, but he would manage. Once that was handled and Harry was out of quarantine, he would go back to working with the young man. There were a couple bones he could toss Harry's way he would like and he planned to utilize that. When he got that worked through, he would progress to the political then work with Harry's friends. Ron—the young man might be out of the mess from what he saw, but he thought he could persuade Ginny to step in. She wasn't as Light as the rest of her family because of the possession, but she had enough of that influence that he could only hope. He was sure he could persuade her to step in as the third of the trio then work from there.Happy that he had some kind of plan in place for this, Albus then began to list all the things he had to do before the curse finally took him. The list was a long one, but, thankfully, most were easy. He just had to start on them now was all.
