“Damn it, I thought I told you two to be more careful when you drink each other’s blood!” Melody’s voice cut through the darkness. “Alex, get me some replenisher.”
“Wha?” Draco managed to croak out. His head was pounding.
“You’re faces are practically white!” Melody growled. “It’s going to take a few hours to get you two normalized at the very least.”
“Didn’t mean to,” Hermione groaned. She was pretty sure she’d been hit with a bludger.
“Yes well, you picked a hell of a time to forget yourselves,” Melody sighed and tipped a bottle of liquid down their throats.
“How bad?” Draco wheezed, cracking his eyes open and pleasantly surprised that it was dark. Well, what did he expect after they’d charmed the windows black?
Alex came breezing back in the room and clucked. “You’ll be better once your blood evens out but I’d say you were a pint low.”
“How can you tell?” Hermione asked as she clutched the sheets to her chest and shifted to sit up.
“I can smell it.” Alex shrugged. “That potion should work pretty quickly. Sort yourselves out and come down for breakfast. It’s early yet, probably not even five in the morning in Scotland.”
The couple waited until the adults left the room before they began trying to get out of bed. The previous night had been unbelievably wonderful but they’d overdone it and now they were paying for it. They took a quick shower, too tired and sore to do anything other than mechanically wash each other. It hit them as they got to the dining room. Today they would face Voldemort.
“Puts a damper on the day, doesn’t it?” Harmony asked as they sat down heavily at the table.
“I’ll say,” Draco whispered.
He looked around the table, taking note of the table’s occupants. Philippe was busy forking food onto his wife’s plate. Dumbledore was staring off into space and serenely sipping a cup of tea. He couldn’t keep his eyes from roaming over to Potter. The raven haired boy had a frown on his face while he rubbed mindless circles on his wife’s upper back. He looked so determined and yet there was a sadness in his eyes that was unmistakable. Draco swallowed hard and averted his eyes. Potter would die today and there was nothing anyone could do to stop it.
Hermione trembled a bit when Draco thought about Harry. There was no guarantee that she’d get her friend back today. They could lose him forever. Her stomach gave a horrible lurch. She clapped her hand over her mouth and made a beeline for the loo. For once, she was thankful there was nothing in her stomach. Draco walked in and knelt behind her, rubbing her back comfortingly.
“Here,” Alex said as he thrust a bottle of nausea potion at her. “Melody’s already downed two of them this morning.”
“She’s got an excuse,” Hermione said weakly.
“You do too,” Alex said kindly.
Hermione’s eye widened. “I’m not!”
Alex chuckled. “No, you aren’t pregnant. However, I think that today of all days would be one to worship the porcelain gods. If I were capable of eating anything, I’m sure I’d see it again.”
Hermione nodded grimly and downed the potion, thankful for Alex’s understanding. It only took minutes for it to take effect and she sighed in relief. Merlin she loved magic.
Draco chuckled. “It is rather great, isn’t it?”
Hermione nodded. “I’m sorry. I’ll be better now.”
Alex shrugged. “I think everyone is entitled to their moment of weakness. I can’t tell you how terrified I am.”
“We’ll protect her,” Draco said, his eyes glued to the floor. He was afraid that if he looked anywhere else, he might lose his stomach too. A potion bottle appeared in his hand and he didn’t even question it. He downed it in one gulp and closed his eyes as the soothing calm washed over him.
“Come on you two,” Melody said softly. “You need to eat something, keep your strength up.”
“How are you feeling?” Hermione asked.
Melody smiled weakly. “I’m terrified beyond reason but seeing as how I’ve already died twice, I can’t see anything worse happening.”
“Please stay here.” Draco pleaded. “You’ve done enough.”
Melody sighed. “I’m glad you think so but I haven’t. Harmony and I are both going. She’s staying in the Headmaster’s office, a guaranteed safe spot and a direct link to the school.”
“What? Why?” Hermione asked in alarm.
“Hogwarts is full of sentient magic. The castle can actually speak with the Headmaster…and Harmony. She can tell what’s happening anywhere. We’re going to charm some mirrors so she can help us out during the battle.”
“I don’t like it,” Draco growled.
Melody laughed. “I’m sure I protested louder than you but our fates our set. We can’t go against them.”
“You’re not allowed to fight,” Hermione growled.
“Wrong,” Melody said. “I’m not allowed to lead. I can protect all I bloody well want to.”
Draco quirked an eyebrow. “Is that so?”
Melody smirked. “The English have much more tasteful swears. Anyway, with my gift, I have to be in the fray. I can’t see through the damned walls of Hogwarts like I can other places. Besides, I am a phenom. We were ordered to stick together.”
“We were,” a deep voice drawled from behind her, making everyone jump.
“Severus!” Melody squeaked. “What are you doing here?”
“We got a rather rude wakeup call from three old hags ordering us to come here and share breakfast with you,” Celeste said. She was standing completely behind Severus.
Melody snorted. “Wonderful. Well, no sense in facing them on an empty stomach. Let’s eat.”
Breakfast was very subdued. Everyone had to more or less force themselves to eat but they could stall no longer. Knowing what they had to do, they all walked out to place where they’d banished the blood circle. Philippe conjured a small chair for Harmony as soon as they arrived. She was already wiped out.
“We meet again.” The soothing sound of Nemesis’s voice washed over them.
“Where’s the hags?” Melody asked snidely.
Nemesis looked like she was biting back a grin. “They wished for me to speak for them. There are a few things we must discuss before you go into battle today.”
“More stipulations?” Harmony asked softly.
“No,” Nemesis said. “You are to stay in the place that you’ve deemed safe. The fates have agreed to protect that place as penance for trying to break their word.”
“About time they paid up,” Melody mumbled.
“Why so bitter?” Nemesis asked.
“I can’t say it and you know it,” Melody snapped. “So why don’t you just say what you came to say and let’s get this over with.”
Nemesis merely gave the surly twin a piercing look before sighing. “You know you will pull double duty. Inform them as best you can AND fulfill your duty as a phenom.”
“What is our duty?” Celeste spoke up.
“To aid the pure in protecting the innocent and to aid the Chosen One on his path. There is one more gift you have that must be revealed to you now. If you combine your powers, you create a semi-permanent cage. It should stop any unforgivable magic. Try it now.”
Everyone gave her a strange look before assuming their positions. They summoned their powers and then gasped as Nemesis seemed to float through them, filling them with understanding. They could see the magic lines and extended their hands, pushing their magic until it touched and then tugging, as if knitting a scarf. Draco and Hermione walked into the middle and the other three couples shifted to make a triangle around them, encompassing them. Sparks flew and then a sparkling cage appeared. The pure couple walked through it with no problems.
Harmony smiled and motioned for Philippe to walk into it. Her husband passed right through the lines, running his fingers through them all the way around the circle before walking out of it again. Alex then walked in and cast the killing curse. It crackled and dissipated as soon as it left his wand tip. Then he ventured outside the circle and cast it at the cage. The green light crackled and exploded as soon as it hit, leaving a harmless cascading shower of green and gold sparks in its wake.
“Blimey,” Harry and Ginny gasped at the same time.
“Use it wisely,” Nemesis said before disappearing.
“Well, that was interesting,” Harmony said lightheartedly.
The couples extended their hands again and the magic crackled and seemed to seep back into them. They shook their heads in awe, unable to keep a sense of hope from springing up on them. If they had this tool, it wouldn’t be so hard to protect everyone. There was still terrible danger, but now they could level the playing field.
“Well, I suppose we’d better get back and start packing those poor kids out,” Melody said gruffly and pulled a tin can from her pocket. They bid Harmony and Philippe goodbye and felt the tug behind their navel. They crashed down in a heap in the floor.
“That didn’t go quite how I planned,” Melody groaned as Alex hauled her off the floor and checked her over.
“Will they be joining us later?” Hermione asked with a frown.
Melody nodded. “We figured the less we had to bend the wards to cover their tracks, the better.”
“When is Lucius coming?” Draco asked softly.
A knock sounded at the door. “Now,” Melody said softly. “Transform and get under the cloak and be very still so I can bend the wards.”
“Enter,” Severus drawled when two wolves and four invisible students were tucked into a corner of the office.
“Severus, lovely day, isn’t it?” Lucius asked. His eyes were on Melody who was kneeling in a corner, one wolf on either side of her.
“I wouldn’t know. I have no use for such trivial nonsense,” Severus sniffed.
“Trouble in paradise?”
“This is hardly paradise, dunderheads at every turn.”
“I should think there would be a silver lining in there…somewhere,” Lucius assured him, his eyes still locked on Melody’s form.
Severus ignored his dig. “All set for tonight?”
“Of course,” Lucius said with a nasty grin. “Potter won’t know what hit him. I must say, a dance on this day of all days seems like a foolhardy move.”
“Less people about to harbor him when he arrives,” Snape said smoothly.
“I suppose.” Lucius dismissed the thought and turned around to walk out. “Oh, you should know, Demitri and what’s left of his clan will be chaperoning with me tonight.”
Severus nodded his thanks and pretended to be working hard on some paperwork. When the door clicked shut, tense silence filled the office before everyone came out of hiding.
“Finally,” Melody sighed. “We get a break.”
“We must let Demitri know of the plan,” Severus mumbled.
“I’m on it,” Alex said and downed two small vials. Everyone recognized them as blood and a replinisher. With that, he turned in mist and crept out of the door.
“We’ll just get started,” Draco muttered and stalked out of the door with a tiny red hummingbird perched on his shoulder.
“Draco!” A male voice drawled.
Draco cringed at hearing his father’s voice. No, not his father, Lucius. He wanted nothing to do with the man. In fact, he was looking forward to watching his blood father drain him. The bastard deserved no less. He felt Hermione nestle further into his cloak and turned on his heel. “Father.”
“I’ve been hearing some rather…interesting stories regarding your extracurricular activities.”
“I hardly think my activities are any of your concern,” Draco growled coldly. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have an engagement that I am very nearly late for.”
“You dare sully the Malfoy name with some trollop!” Lucius snapped.
Draco’s eyes flashed silver, startling his father into taking a step backwards. “I wouldn’t dream of sullying the name of Malfoy father. We both know you’ve done that enough for both of us.” He spun back around and stalked off down the hall, making sure to keep a shield up.
‘That was brilliant, love,’ Hermione cooed softly in his mind.
‘What I wouldn’t give to drain him myself,’ Draco thought wistfully.
‘Gross.’ Hermione mentally shuddered, earning a wry chuckle from her husband.

“I think I’m going to be sick,” Hermione gasped, holding her stomach in a vain attempt to keep what little he had eaten at lunch down.
“We have to be strong now love,” Draco said softly. “Where’s my lioness?”
“Hiding,” Hermione said dryly.
“I highly doubt that,” Draco gave her a scorching kiss.
“Oi, get a room!” Ron yelled as he ushered the last of the Slytherin fourth years through the portrait in the ROR.
“They’re all taken!” Draco called. He was finally able to breathe a small sigh of relief. The younger students had been evacuated without a hitch. Secretly, he was glad Melody hexed their tongues to their mouths. Hermione was less than thrilled but it would keep them quiet until the war was over.
“That’s all of them then,” Harry said as the portrait shut. He pulled his cloak off and stuffed it in his pocket. “I suggest everyone go get ready for the party. It’s a masquerade, so don’t forget your masks.”
“How are we going to tell everyone apart?” Seamus asked.
The door opened as Seamus yelled and Melody strolled in. “I’m so very glad you asked.” She plopped down tiredly on a nearby hammock. “Everyone come here. I’m going to put a second sight charm on you. When we’re in the hall, I’ll charm those that need to escape to glow purple. Only those with the second sight charm will be able to see it.”
“How are you going to tell them apart?” Neville asked shyly.
Melody grinned and waved her hand around a few times. Then she took her wand out and muttered something under her breath while tapping everyone on the head. “Because I am that good. I’m also going to charm the DA to glow yellow. Enemies will glow green. Draco and Hermione are going to dance their little butts off. I’m hoping since you’ve all been watching them for a month, you won’t be distracted by their charms. Wait until everyone is staring at them to move.”
“How are they going to keep their identities secret?” Padme asked.
Melody chuckled and waved her arm. Draco’s hair turned green and silver, lengthened a bit, and drew itself into a pony tail. Hermione’s turned scarlet and gold and twisted itself into a beautiful chignon. “Now, do you think you could figure out who they were if they were wearing masks?”
A chorus of ‘no’ rang out before they filed out to get ready for the party. The golems were already in the common rooms, sitting there like statues. Ron snuck out to go with Luna which made Ginny snicker.
“Do we do the cage thing before or after we take everyone on the inside out?” Harry asked.
“Considering it’s a visible spell, I’d say we wait,” Draco spoke up. “We don’t want our advantage blown.”
“How are we going to keep everyone from figuring out what we are?” Ginny bit her nails.
“If they ask, don’t say a damned thing,” Melody said. “I highly doubt they’ll put two and two together and it isn’t like knowledge of phenoms and pure magic is readily available. They already know that Hermione and Draco are more powerful than any other student in this school and no one has questioned it.”
“Where is the middle of the school anyway?” Hermione asked.
“The hallway by the transfiguration class,” Melody answered. “Run there first after we take care of everyone and return to the great hall. The cage will have blended into the rest of the protections everyone else has up by then.”
“Are we going to help with the extra spells?” Ginny asked.
Melody nodded. “Put up as many as you can think of. McGonagall’s dying to animate the suits of armor and statues.”
“What about the vampires?” Hermione asked.
“Alex was able to contact them,” Melody answered. “They’ll be standing outside the main doors and the first floor stairway. That way, the DA will have safe passage until the second floor. Alex and Celeste have agreed to take the others out when the dance starts. Demitri himself will guard the children until they get to the seventh floor.”
“And we’ll try to steal the show while this is happening,” Draco said, trying to calm himself down with facts.
“Yup. We’ve got a surprise for you too,” Melody grinned.
“What is it?” Hermione asked.
“SURPRISE!” A man yelled as he burst through the portrait.
“Sampson?” Draco asked in shock.
“Not just me.” Sampson grinned and held his hand out. All the vampires from the club were following him including a fully restored Sergei.
“Wow,” Ginny breathed.
Melody giggled. “Well, what’s a party without a band, right?”
“It’s perfect.” Harry grinned.
“They’ll help us get Voldy’s inner-school army under control,” Melody said.
“You aren’t going to eat them, are you?” Ginny asked.
“No. Merely hypnotize them until you get them stunned,” Sampson assured her. “We’ve sworn to eat only Death Eaters.”
“Hope not,” Draco said, giving his arm a cursory glance.
Victor grinned at them. “Only the ones on their side.”
“Alright, everyone get ready. Harmony and Dumbledore should be arriving in Sev’s office soon. I’ll see everyone in the great hall,” Melody said, marching out the door.
“Showtime,” Victor said softly as he and the others filed out the door.
“Scared?” Ginny asked Hermione.
“Terrified.”
“We can do this,” Harry said, his face set in a determined line. “One thing at a time. Let’s focus on getting the others out and then we can put that cage up and set our eyes on that snake.” With that, he and Ginny snuck out the door to get dressed.
Hermione collapsed in Draco’s arms, happy they were the only ones in the room. The knowledge of what was fixing to happen proved too much and she burst into tears. How could she just send her best friend off to die?
“Shh, love. He’ll come back.” Draco repeated this sentiment over and over again.
“What if he doesn’t?” Hermione whispered.
“Then he’ll die a hero and we’ll make sure that scaly bastard never takes another breath.”
“Then we’ll die. We can’t kill him, only protect the others.”
Draco sighed. “I think, in this case, seeing him dead is one of only two things I’d die for.”
“The other?”
“Protecting you.”
Hermione smiled sadly. “If only you could.”
“I can think of no one I’d rather die with.” Draco kissed her, a soft and tender kiss but filled with aching love for her.
“If we play it right, no one has to die tonight,” Hermione whispered and buried her head in his chest.
“Except the Dark Lord,” he said flatly and ushered her up. “Come on, we’ve got to get dressed.”
Hermione picked up her chosen outfit for the night, a scarlet red and gold halter dress; it’s back cut all the way down to her bum. The flared skirt would barely cover her knickers, matching scarlet and gold knickers. She eyed her gold heels and sighed. It would be fitting, having to run around in heels and still fight.
Draco laughed. “We’ll transfigure them into trainers, don’t worry.”
“It still feel…naked.”
“Would you like to be naked?” Draco asked, dropping his voice a register.
“Very much,” she said hoarsely. “But there isn’t time.”
“Bollocks.”
Draco growled and dropped his Slytherin colored clothes, Melody’s idea, something about house pride. He grabbed Hermione by the waist and rendered them both nude with a snap of his fingers. He had her up against the wall and was buried balls deep inside her before she could take her next breath. They went into a frenzy, him pounding into her as hard as he could and she bucking her hips, not willing to let him take the lead. He bared his fangs and reached down, thumping her clit as he sank his fangs into her neck. She screamed as her inner walls clamped down on him and then bit him. He howled his release, slamming into her as the last of his seed filled her womb. They healed each other and slid down the wall.
Hermione sniffled and wiped a tear from her face. “I love you.”
Draco kissed her tenderly, a stark difference from the headed coupling they’d just had. “I love you too, more than life itself.”
“Hey you two,” Melody called as she burst through the door. They squeaked and tried to cover themselves. She paid their state of dress no mind as she barreled on. “You just lit the entire castle up. Luckily, it doesn’t register as powerful magic but show some restraint!”
“Damn it,” Draco hissed and summoned a cloak to cover them with. “We just wanted a last time.”
“Fine!” Melody spat. “Fuck each other’s brains out but keep a lid on the magic for fucks sake. You’ve got half an hour. Be dressed and ready by then.” She turned around and opened the door, pausing and turning. “And no makeup. No more hiding.”
Draco and Hermione winced as the door slammed shut. Draco snorted. “I think we cocked that up.”
Hermione burst into giggles. “Well, not all of it. Let’s get cleaned up and ready.”
Half an hour later saw them waiting to enter the great hall with all the other students, most of whom had chosen simple black attire with a plain black mask. There wasn’t really any reason to celebrate so no one went all out. They immediately realized that about a dozen or so students were glowing yellow, the DA. No one was glowing purple yet but about two dozen students were glowing green.
Hermione gulped, her nerves on high alert. She was glad that they’d chosen to cover up with heavy black cloaks to conceal their less than conservative attire. They’d even charmed their corresponding masks to look black upon their arrival. She tried to think upon happier times but she couldn’t go any further back than them dressing in the ROR. Draco’s loud protests at having to wear such a ghastly pair of trousers had her in giggles all over again. She’d assured him that he looked rather smashing in the silver vinyl pants and green silk shirt. He did too. Her pulse sped up a bit at the thought of him in them.
‘Stop it!’ Draco ordered in his thoughts. ‘You’re making me hard again and I can’t afford that in these trousers.’
‘At least you know you look fit,’ Hermione placated and tried to bring her mind to focus again.
“Attention!” Severus shouted and the hall went silent. “School rules apply tonight. No one outside the hall unless you require the loo and permission will need to be granted to do so. No amorous activities. If anyone sees something out of the ordinary, come and inform me immediately. Now, enter.”
With that, he spun around and opened the doors to the hall. If it had to be described in a word, gloomy would come to mind. There were no charming orange jack-o-lanterns, no colorful silver spider webs, no brightly colored crackers, and absolutely no streamers or confetti of any kind. The ceiling was ominous, black storm clouds with distant lightning on a cloudy night. A slight fog seemed to sweep about the floor and the tables all had black roses decorating them. It was about as far from a cheerful party as you could get.
Draco and Hermione hung back until the very last student entered the hall. They were about to step across when they noticed five figures dressed in black cloaks descend on them. They tensed, braced for a fight but relaxed when the lead figure lowered his cloak hood and smiled with perfectly white teeth. His inky black eyes bored into them before he blinked.
“Oh, it’s you,” Draco breathed in relief.
“On edge already?” Demitri drawled.
“Why wouldn’t we be?” Draco sniffed.
“Granted,” Demitri nodded. “We have the first floor secured already. As soon as these doors shut, the daywalker and the green one will take the others out.”
“They have names,” Hermione growled.
“I’m sure they do but for now, we’ll leave it at that. Walls have ears.”
Draco rubbed Hermione’s back to calm her down. “We must be going. Others will be worrying.”
Demitri nodded. “Be well children.”
“Be well,” Draco said and ushered Hermione through the doors, pausing only a moment when they slammed shut.
“So good of you to join us,” Severus said acidly as they slunk to their table. “Ten points from each of your houses for your tardiness.”
For the party, they’d decided on round tables and non-assigned seating so they could sit with Harry, Ginny, Ron, and Luna. They sat down hurriedly and ducked their heads, hoping no one would look two closely at them. It wasn’t like it wasn’t expected. More attention would have been drawn if Snape had done nothing. When they were settled, the Headmaster clapped his hands and food appeared on the tables.
“All set then?” Ron asked through a mouth full of food.
Draco sneered at his atrocious table manners. “Yes. We just spoke with Demitri. First floor is secure. The others are being taken care of now.”
“You sure?” Ron asked.
“Considering one of them thwarted all of us and damn near ripped your head off, I wouldn’t worry,” Draco said dryly.
Ron paled and nodded, going back to his food. He remembered all too well that fateful day. He’d said some terrible things to Hermione and ended up plastered to the wall by a very angry daywalker hell bent on either eating him or cursing him to oblivion, possibly both. She still didn’t like him much but they could work together now.
Dinner continued in almost absolute silence. It was unsettling, to say the least, especially since they could feel the cold eyes of Lucius sweeping the room. Hermione mostly just moved her things around on her plate. Draco, wanting her to keep her strength up, did something that did not go unnoticed. He pulled her into his lap and started feeding her from his plate. His warmth combined with the fact that he wouldn’t relent until she opened her mouth ensured that she’d actually eat. Soon they’d cleared most of his plate and a portion of hers. The stares felt like fire on the back of their necks but they shrugged it off, realizing that this was it. There was no time to worry about what others thought.
The doors suddenly swung open and two wolves came padding in like they owned the place. Instead of heading up to the head table with the headmaster, they made a beeline for the table Draco and Hermione sat at. They leapt in the air and landed right in Hermione’s lap, causing her and her husband to come tumbling to the floor with a startled yell. They struggled to sit back up with the heavy weight on their chests.
“I take it that everything is set?” Draco huffed while looking up at the black wolf.
It nodded and hopped off his chest with a happy yip. The red wolf grinned and daintily leapt off of Hermione, padding up to the head table to sit beside Severus. The black wolf ran up and laid his head in Melody’s lap, giving a cursory growl to Lucius before he did so.
“Well, that was fun,” Hermione groaned as she scrambled back into her chair.
“I thought so,” Ginny stifled a laugh and took a large swig of pumpkin juice only to spit most of it out in her napkin. “Oh my!”
“What?” Harry asked in alarm.
“Look!” Ginny hissed and cocked her head to the side.
They all looked over to see several dozen tables with students that were glowing a brilliant purple color.
“Looks like we’re on,” Harry said as he threw down his napkin.
Severus stood up and clapped his hands, banishing all the dishes as he did so. Then he held his wand to his throat and cast a sonorus. “The celebration will now move on to the dancing portion. Tonight, we have guests all the way from America.” He waved his hand and a curtain that no one had noticed disappeared, revealing a large band set up. Six vampires with gleaming teeth grinned out at the crowd and waved. “Everyone welcome the Dark Horses.”
A smattering of claps filled the air as the drummer hit a beat and started playing a lively tune. Draco and Hermione took a deep breath and ventured out on the dance floor with the other few dozen couples brave enough to start things off. He spun her around and they fell into an easy rhythm. They didn’t try to show off just yet, knowing that the DA needed to get organized. They would send Harry and Ginny out on the floor to bump into them rather forcefully when everything was ready. It surprised them just how quickly that happened.
Draco reached out and rubbed Hermione’s mask, making the glamour fall away to reveal the beautiful gold feathered mask underneath. Her eyes sparkled in the dim lighting and his breath caught. He couldn’t believe just how lovely she looked, even now, covered from head to toe with a heavy cloak. He smiled and pulled her closer, reveling in the feel of her body next to his. She reached up and removed his mask’s glamour as well. They looked over to see Melody taking her place on the band’s stage. He almost tripped when Alex came up behind her and took a microphone.
“Now or never,” he breathed and spun her out as the band struck up an extremely fast salsa. He dipped her down and they began moving to the beat of the music. Other couples started inching away from them as they got further into the dance, dipping and spinning wildly to keep up to the rhythm. He picked her up and threw her into the air just as the small band of fifth years reached the doors. When she landed, all eyes were on them instead of the group slipping out. They breathed a sigh of relief and toned down their dancing just a bit. The next group, they’d reveal their hair.
By the third song, all eyes were on the couple with the strangely colored hair. Two more groups had already made it out the doors. By the fifth song, the couple had started getting a bit more heated with their dances. Lingering touches, heated looks, and very risqué moves caused more than one gasp. It was what they were going for, the center of attention. Before they knew it, half of their targets were gone. Unfortunately, the other dances had become used to their antics and were now noticing the astonishing lack of bodies filling the hall.
“Time to kick it up a notch!” Melody called and started the band in a very sexy rumba. She and Alex took the microphones and started a beautiful duet.
“Let’s do this,” Draco breathed and jerked Hermione’s cloak off as he spun her around.
Shouts of surprise sounded out at the skimpy outfit she wore. However, it was Lucius’s shock from her tattoos that made Draco smirk wickedly. Not to be outdone, Hermione went down into the splits, taking Draco’s cloak with her. Squeals were heard as Draco’s taught bum and pale sculpted chest came into view. They tossed the cloaks aside and continued on with their escapade, noticing that two more groups had been able to sneak out from the sheer rippling effect of the shock. It wouldn’t be long now. There weren’t that many more that needed to be sent away.
Melody and Alex started singing the same song they’d performed their first night in front of the DA in the ROR. Draco grinned and lifted Hermione in the air, flashing her knickers to all and sundry before dipping her low to the ground and dragging his mouth from her stomach to just under her jawbone. She went into the splits again and undid the rest of his buttons from his shirt. Girls squealed, boys shouted, and it was general chaos as they did moves that were really only suited for the bedroom. Draco and Hermione tore off part of their masks, exposing the hummingbirds for the room’s perusal.
“Severus, do something!” Lucius hissed.
“Why?” Severus asked blandly.
“Those moves are…unseemly.”
“They are rather risqué.” Severus smirked and cocked his head as Draco practically molested Hermione on the floor. “Still, they have good rhythm.”
“They have good…have you lost your mind?” Lucius shouted.
“Perhaps,” Severus said stoically, his eyes sliding over to the door where the last group of students were making a break for it. When they were through the door, he let a smile creep up on his face. “If you’ll excuse me for a moment, I’m going to put a stop to this.”
Lucius nodded in thanks, grateful that he was going to stop the couple dancing. Instead of watching him dress down the outlandish couple, he merely strolled over to the band and had a few words with the singers. Lucius gripped his cane harder in his frustration but relaxed minutely when the dour man walked over to the couple.
“I believe your father will have a coronary before I’ve drained him,” Severus muttered under his breath to Draco.
Draco bit back a laugh. “Wait until he sees what’s next.”
“I’ll charm your hair back now,” Severus said softly. “If he can’t put two and two together before then, rip off the masks.”
“Is that wise?” Hermione gasped.
“Alex and Celeste are in position now. They will grab their targets as soon as Lucius protests. I’ll take care of him after he’s called the Dark Lord. Now, do your worst.”
Draco and Hermione grinned, bowing their heads to him as he reversed the charm. It wouldn’t be hard to figure out who Draco was. Not many boys had platinum hair, even fewer with his build. Then, there was the little matter of the tattoos sparkling in the lights. Lucius was sure to realize what they were. Severus smirked and spun back around, taking his place beside a sputtering Lucius. They made sure to listen in to the conversation as Melody and Alex began singing a slow and sexy song with a heavy beat they could really get into.
“That’s impossible!” Lucius bellowed.
“Whatever do you mean?” Severus asked innocently.
“Those markings suggest that they are in a bonded marriage!”
“So?”
“So!” Lucius hissed. “That’s Draco and I know he is NOT married.”
“How do you know that?”
“I’m his bloody father. I would have needed to have been there!”
“I meant, how do you know that is Draco?”
“That’s my son. I’d know him anywhere. The Malfoy traits are hard to hide.”
Severus merely shrugged and watched his blood son and daughter-in-law make jaws drop. Parkinson’s outraged shriek could be heard across the room when Draco placed a scorching kiss on his wife’s lips. They really were quite fetching together. He could tell it was all they could do to keep the laughter at bay but one who didn’t know the circumstances wouldn’t have been able to figure it out. He almost lost his composure when Draco ground himself against Hermione’s rear, causing Lucius to curse a blue streak. The son that he’d beaten restraint into his entire life was practically shagging his wife on the dance floor.
“I demand you make this stop right now!” Lucius barked.
“Why?” Severus asked with a hard edge to his voice. He was tiring of the charade.
“He’s making a fool of himself.”
“I don’t see it. The boy can obviously handle himself and his partner,” Severus sneered.
“Who is she?”
Severus allowed a cruel smile to cross his features. “Someone worthy of him, I’m sure.” He nodded to a couple across the room who then ran onto the middle of the dance floor. They started dancing much more conservatively but keeping the rhythm of the song quite well. It was a last minute addition, Harry and Ginny being on the floor. They would all reveal themselves when the song ended, guaranteeing a call to the Dark Lord.
“Who is that pair?” Lucius asked, his eyes still glued to his son who was currently boring his eyes into his partner.
Severus couldn’t help himself. “They are my children.”
“What?” Lucius snapped and turned to his supposed friend for over twenty years.
“I didn’t stutter.”
“You have no children.”
“Wrong,” Severus hissed and cut his eyes over to Melody. The woman had a smirk to rival the devil as she jumped up and whispered something into Alex’s ear.
“Enlighten me then, Severus. How many children do you have?”
“Four with two more on the way,” The headmaster said smoothly.
“Impossible.”
“Says you.”
“Does the Dark Lord know of these children?”
Severus nodded his head, listening for the ending cue of the music. “He’s met all but one of them, but I do believe you have met them all.”
“Who are they?” Lucius asked gruffly.
“You are looking at them,” Severus said softly and reached down to pet the red wolf that had appeared at his feet. He caressed her ear before slowly lowering himself to her level. “It’s time.”
The wolf bared its teeth and gave him a gentle lick to his cheek before stalking across the room and growling at Alecto. The Death Eater startled and started throwing hexes at the wolf who neatly dodged them, running behind a nearby tapestry. Alecto followed and a shrill scream permeated the air, detectable only to those with superb hearing. The music would drown out the sound for anyone else.
“What was that about?” Lucius asked, his eyes following the path the two had taken.
“Oh, just a little surprise,” Severus smirked and watched as a black wolf took the same path as the one before with Amycus.
“What’s with the mongrels Severus?” Lucius asked in exasperation.
“They aren’t mongrels,” Severus snapped. “Now shut the hell up and watch.”
“Watch what? What the fuck is going on?”
The music came to a flourishing crescendo and the couples ripped their masks off. As expected, shouts of surprise rolled through the crowd as shock settled in. Curses flew and were neatly blocked, crackling against the strongest shield they’d ever encountered. Draco and Hermione were in rare form, their eyes glowing as they held the shield up until the vampires could streak across the room and start mesmerizing their victims. The DA followed behind, stunning everyone they could and watching as they were dragged off and imprisoned in a nearby classroom. The teachers joined in quickly, trying to ignore the shock of the two biggest rivals in school being together.
Lucius quickly called the Dark Lord when he saw Potter appear. “Severus, it’s Potter! Get him!” He shouted and threw a curse that was rebounded. He ducked it and stared in shock as Severus merely stood there, his arms crossed.
“I don’t think I will,” Severus said softly and spun on his heels, walking quickly towards the tapestry that the now drained Carrows were behind. An enraged Lucius trailed behind only a step or two.
Draco and Hermione stood there, half-bored while they watched their opponents fall. They weren’t liking their job very well right then. It felt like freeloading. They just stood there while everyone else did all the work. All in all, it took a mere three minutes to take care of the opposition. Their eyes traveled over to Severus, who was making a beeline for the tapestry. They decided to follow since they were waiting on him to complete the next step. Harry hit his knees, grabbing his scar and groaning in pain before they could take a step.
“Fifteen minutes, tops,” Harry ground out.
Hermione nodded and grabbed Draco, running for the tapestry. They swerved in and out of professors who were casting dozens of protective spells around the hall. They stopped just as they reached the tapestry, easily seeing inside where the two crumpled bodies of the Carrows lay, Celeste and Alex hovering over them with bloody teeth. Lucius had just entered before them.
“What is this?” Lucius hissed, backing up slowly at the glowing indigo color in Severus’s eyes.
“Dinner,” Severus hissed and flashed forward, throwing Lucius against the wall and holding him there, enjoying the power he held over the man.
“15 minutes father,” Draco said calmly.
“Thank you son,” Severus said softly, his eyes never leaving his prey.
“Son? He’s my son!” Lucius said, looking back and forth between the man who had him and the boy whom he’d raised in his image.
“Not anymore,” Draco growled. “Severus was kind enough to adopt me. He is the only father that matters, the only one I care to acknowledge.”
“You’re the one who allowed him to marry this mudblood filth!” Lucius spat.
“Be very careful what you call my daughter Lucius,” Severus said softly. “She doesn’t take kindly to those who would belittle her.”
“What can a mudblood do to me?” Lucius asked haughtily.
“Oh, I’d say there was a fair bit,” Hermione growled, her fangs elongating and glinting in the dull light.
“No,” Lucius breathed.
“Oh yes,” Draco smiled wickedly, flashing his fangs for his father to see. “Just one of her many charms. Know this, Lucius. The pure line of the Malfoy’s ends here. I intend to have as many half-blood children as she’ll allow and I will be proud to be their father.”
“You’re insane!” Lucius cried.
“Hardly. I merely saw the truth. Make it quick father. We need to get started,” Draco grabbed Hermione’s hand and started to lead her out, not wanting to see what was fixing to happen.
“Wait,” Melody called, skidding to a stop right in front of them. She swerved to go around and stopped, panting from exertion. “Half now, half later.”
“What?” Severus asked. “I thought you wanted me to end him.”
“I do,” Melody puffed. “I do, but half now and half later.”
“He’s still a liability.”
“Not if he’s bound to you he isn’t,” Melody wheezed and held up a mirror.
“She’s right,” Harmony’s voice drifted into the alcove. “Half now for strength, and half later for…rejuvenation. He’ll be so lust stricken, he shouldn’t be a problem. However, just in case, have Draco and Hermione bind his magic and lock him in a broom closet.”
“Very well,” Severus said, blinking and letting the indigo color of his eyes fade just a bit.
“What are you going to do?” Lucius’s voice wavered.
“I don’t think your ears are damaged,” Severus drawled with a smirk. “I’m going to take half now and then my children are going to bind you and lock you in a broom closet. We’ll see each other again soon.”
“What?” Lucius’s voice wavered with terror.
“Look into my eyes,” Severus said softly and let his fangs descent.
A masculine scream rang out just Hermione and Draco managed to turn around and exit the alcove. They shuddered at the horror of the voice but neither could bring themselves to care. Sadness descended on Hermione, the thought that her compassion was gone weakened her resolve.
“For some, there is no redemption,” Draco said softly as he stroked her shoulder, placing light kisses along her neck.
“No Master, don’t leave me!” Lucius screamed as Severus strolled out of the alcove, Celeste and Alex on his heels.
“Bind him,” Severus jeered and licked his lips, grimacing. “Tastes like muggle cough syrup, bitter.”
Draco walked in and sneered in disgust at the display his father, no Lucius, was making. The man was practically on his stomach, humping the floor and crying for his master. He turned Hermione around so she wouldn’t have to see it. “I’ll do it. I don’t want you to touch him.”
He flicked his finger and four cuffs and a collar appeared in the air. With a snap, they affixed themselves in their proper places and closed with an audible click. Then he chanted a few spells and felt the magic swirl around, leaching into Lucius’s core and creating a barrier he couldn’t break even with a wand. A strong wind whipped around and the older Malfoy’s back arched, his throat emitting an unearthly howl as his magic was locked away.
“Let’s go,” Draco said softly to Hermione and carelessly flicked his hand, floating his former father behind him. They ran through the halls and up the stairs to a broom closet close to the Headmaster’s office. Then they ran back to the Great Hall, catching the tail end of McGonagall’s speech.
“Those not of age have already been evacuated. Should you want to leave now, please see Madam Pomfrey and she will lead you out. The rest of you, please start securing the castle any way you see fit.”
“Where’s Snape?” One Ravenclaw asked from the back of the crowd.
“He has disappeared,” McGonagall’s face was set in a firm line when she saw them out of the corner of her eye and nodded.
“Come on, let’s get that cage up.” A whisper came from behind them and they jumped, spinning around to look at nothing. “It’s Harry. The others have already gone. Run to the middle and we’ll go to the corner.”
Draco and Hermione nodded and ran to the exact middle of the castle, their breaths a bit fast from all the activity. They thanked their training routine though because they were hardly tired. They felt the magic crackle around them, their magic calling to it and lifted their hands in answer. The tendrils of the cage joined theirs, seeming to float through the walls and they pushed it outward, out as far and as wide as they could until they felt the jolt of it breaking through the uppermost floor. It was as Melody had promised, they were protecting the entire castle against the killing curse and it was hardly draining. They lowered their hands just as a group of students and Flitwick skittered past, going to reinforce other strategic points of the castle. They didn’t know about the cage and even if they did, it only protected from Unforgivables. There were still a host of things that could do damage. They were running back to the Great Hall to check in when they heard the high pitched voice of Voldemort float through the walls.
“I know that you are preparing to fight. Your efforts are futile. You cannot fight me. I do not want to kill you. I have great respect for the teachers of Hogwarts. I do not want to spill magical blood.”
“Yeah fucking right,” Draco yelled in anger, startling most of the hall.
“Give me Harry Potter, and none shall be harmed. Give me Harry Potter, and I shall leave the school untouched. Give me Harry Potter, and you will be rewarded. You have until ten.”
“Shite. Harry,” Draco said, his stomach bottoming out. “What time is it?”
“Ten ‘til,” Hermione answered, her voice wavering. “What are we going to do?”
“Find him,” Draco whispered and dug his watch out of his trousers and walked over to the corner for more privacy. He flipped it open, the worried face of Severus appeared.
“Where is he?” Hermione asked.
“I don’t know,” Severus hissed, obviously keeping tabs on those around him. “Melody and I were called and had to leave. He was supposed to be on the south corner. See if Alex can find him.”
“Where’s Alex?” Draco asked, looking around to see if he could spot the vampire.
“He was doubling back to intercept Demitri but they were called and had to leave. He should have been there by now.”
“I’m here,” Alex said, appearing before them and startling them. Celeste was at his side.
“Damn it, don’t do that!” Hermione shrieked and then blushed when she realized that everyone who was still in the hall was looking their way. Her eyes widened when she saw that the entire Order had arrived, including Percy, whom they thought was lost to them. Mrs. Weasley nodded her head in acknowledgement and turned to give Percy another hug.
“Sorry,” Alex said sheepishly. “Now, why did you need me?”
“We need to find Harry before…” Hermione’s voice failed her.
Alex nodded sadly and closed his eyes, searching for his wayward son. “There! He’s running with Ginny and reinforcing the borders.”
“Can you intercept him?” Draco asked. “Convince him to come up to the office. She is there, isn’t she?”
“She is,” Celeste said softly, her voice trembling. “We’ll see if we can find him. What are we looking at Sev?”
“Not good. I hope you poured sunlight potion down everyone because I gather that all of Europe and half of Amercia’s vampire and werewolf population are here, not to mention all of the Death Eaters that escaped from prison. There are, of course, the trolls and giants as well.”
“They’ve all taken the potion and will be feeding frequently so they should be fine,” Alex answered.
Melody’s face entered the mirror, her face turned down in a frown. “First chance you get, fry everyone.”
“Everyone?” Hermione squeaked.
“Everyone sweetheart. There’s no time to sort through them all. They’re the most dangerous because they can move the fastest. Trolls and giants will be tough but as long as you can avoid their feet, you can take them down. Werewolves will be a problem though. Do you remember that silver spell I taught you last week?”
“Yes but won’t that hurt the vampires?” Draco asked.
“It’s a risk we’ve been made aware of,” Alex said softly. “Don’t worry about us.”
“Silver statue Draco,” Melody said softly. “And you make sure you kick Fenrir’s ass first. Alex, hurry. If we can get to him, we can avoid a bloodbath.”
“No we can’t,” Alex snorted. “That bastard will attack regardless.”
“But not as long,” Melody hissed. “Now find him.”
“Going now. I love you.”
“I love you too sweetheart,” Melody said sadly and then looked over her shoulder. She turned back, her face a mask of horror. “It’s starting! Protect as many as you can!”
The connection was shut off and they were left staring into a blank mirror. A shot like a lightning bolt hit the school, causing its occupants to shudder. War had come to Hogwarts.
AN: Dun dun DUN! Hello everyone. Yes, I know. This is a horrible, terrible, no good, very bad cliffe. I'm sorry but I had to do it. Had to...or this chapter would be over 40 pages long! I'll try to get the next installment out quickly. I'm also working on the Harry/Ginny story and I hope to have it out in the next day or so. Title should be...Following Destiny. Look for it soon. I've got an epilogue in mind as well, possibly a sequel with children and a new mission. Sound off if you're interested. As always, thanks to everyone who has reviewed and rated this story. I'm usually in tears when I read them, more so now that it's almost done. Keep them coming and let me know how I'm doing and if you find any mistakes. Until next time...love you guys!
