Chapter 54
Beta'd by Tenchi (love you, woman!)
Landing in the tunnel, making sure his cloak covered him, Harry held still to let the wave of dizziness subside. It was the first time he Apparated since being hit with the curse, so there were problems, especially since he wasn't fully back to normal yet. He was mostly there, but some of the 'fuzziness' still remained. Despite that, he and Tom, both, thought it was best to get him back into the castle to minimize any problems Barty may have or his chance of getting caught. As he had a couple of days left of isolation, he would be fine and mostly 'with it' by the time that ended. Besides, this would get him back into the routine enough that nothing would appear 'off' when he had to go back to attending classes.
Once he was under control and the dizziness left, Harry pulled out the map to make damned sure Thor and Draco were waiting on him. Seeing their names at the entrance, he nodded, pleased with that. This was going to be a delicate dance anyway, especially getting Barty out of the castle, so he wanted it to go as smoothly as possible. Then he could get filled in on everything that happened. That, though, he was going to have done over the next couple days to negate any of the effects of what he was dealing with. Snape could handle most of it, and probably would, the others were trickier to work with. Once he was settled, he would have to set up the plan he and Tom had come up with to get him out of the castle every night. It was easy enough, of course, but their help was needed.Stepping out into the hallway, he hissed Thor and Draco's name after checking to ensure that no one else was close. Seeing them look in his direction, he lowered the cloak a little so they could see his face then raised it again. “Alright, keep an eye out and let's get this done.”With a firm nod, Thor pulled out his own map and began to lead the way down to the isolation room where Barty was. Quietly, he asked, “Are you alright, Mr. Potter? We weren't told exactly what happened.”“I'll live,” Harry told him grimly, following along. “It's just taking time to get back to normal is all.”“What happened anyway?” Draco asked in a whisper, keeping an eye out.“I'll explain it all, just not right now. It's too much of a risk if something, or someone, overhears,” Harry told him, walking along and staying focused.“It had to be bad to put you out of commission,” Draco mumbled, looking around and consulting his map.“You have no idea how bad,” Harry sighed, shaking his head. “I'll explain, I promise. I need filled in on everything that's happened anyway, just to make sure I know what to be wary of.”“We'll handle it, don't worry,” Thor told him, leading them down a lesser known passage that would take them straight to the dungeons where Severus would meet them. “Are you going to be up to getting back to 'normal' around here in a couple days?”“I should be,” Harry told him. “There might be some problems here and there, but it won't be anything to worry about.”“Good,” Thor nodded, directing them to the side passage where Severus was waiting at a hidden door. “We made it with no problem,” he sighed as they stepped through, meeting Severus.Panting a little, feeling tired, Harry said, “Good. Let's get this over with so it doesn't look off.” Checking the map once more to make damned sure that no one else was around, he then stripped the Invisibility Cloak off. Quietly, he asked, “Is he ready?”“He is,” Severus said with a firm nod. “Give him the cloak and Professor Rowle will bring it back when we're done.”“Let's do this then. Once he's off, you need to fill me in,” Harry said, stepping through the door that the man opened. Looking at Barty, he grinned, chuckling. The polyjuice hadn't worn off yet, so he was staring at a duplicate of himself. “This is strange,” he snorted, shaking his head.
“It is!” Barty said with a big grin, happy for the confirmation that his friend was, indeed, fine. “You doing better? Last time I saw you, you were still out.”“Much better,” Harry told him with a firm nod. “We'll talk more tomorrow about it. Just get out of here and keep yourself safe while you do.” Harry said, passing the cloak over.Taking it and draping it over himself, Barty said, “Will do. Good to have you back.” Covering himself completely, he gave Harry a clap on the shoulder then said, “Let's do this,” to the other two.Waiting for them to leave and the door to shut, feeling the wards slide into place, Harry flopped in a chair with a tired sigh. Rubbing his face, he said, “Give me the basics of what's gone on. I'll get more details in the next few days. I'm still a little fuzzy and don't want to overload myself.”Ordering his thoughts, Snape rattled off the biggest of what had gone on, making sure to add that Albus had tried getting in once. When he finished, he said, “He's going to try again, we both know that. I doubt he's going to let this state pass him by as he may think that he can get something out of you.”Snorting, Harry shook his head then said, “Let him try. I'm not up to 100%, but I’m good enough he won't get anywhere.” Looking at the man, he said, lowering his voice though there was no chance of being overheard, “There is a full meeting the day after tomorrow, at night. Expect a summons. Only Thor won't get one. We're handling Wormtail then.”Nodding, Snape said nothing, crossing his arms over his chest and waiting.Trying to think, something affected by the aftermath of the spell and his tired state, Harry sighed, “I assume you have a way to tell if Dumbledore tries to get in again.”“I do,” Snape told him firmly with a nod. “I'll be alerted if he even steps close to the entrance and will deal with him. It'll set off a signal in here so you can prepare.”“Good enough,” Harry sighed. Thinking it over, he decided that most everything else could wait until the following day then said, “Do you know anything that can speed up the healing process of the burn? I have the makeup part down, mostly. It's at least passable. I would prefer that it heal to where I can put a glamour over it.”Looking down, thinking it over, Snape then slowly shook his head. “Not that I know of. Burns don't like magic of any kind. Even some potions. The creams you apply are very delicate to make and help, some. With as easily as they can get infected, most shy away from doing more than the creams. I'll look, but I wouldn't count on finding much.”“I didn't think so, but I was hoping.” Pulling a note out of his pants, he handed it over, “That's from the Dark Lord. It's what I've been using for the pain. It's not as bad now, but it's still enough that I will probably need something. Can you come up with anything that's milder that doesn't put me to sleep?”Reading the note quickly, Severus then incinerated it with a wave of his wand. “I have a couple that will work. I'll get them to you in the morning with your breakfast.” Changing topics, he asked, “Can you work with the makeup so it's not revealed?” That was something he didn't know anything about, so he was going to ask.“I've got it passable. It's not as good as a woman could do it, but it'll work. Narcissa gave me a spell that will hold it in place, or however you want to term that, so it won't run, even if I get sweaty. That way I can manually take it off. For now, I'm fine. I just would rather go with the glamour.”That was understandable to Severus so he nodded. “You need to be cautious with the makeup and take it off at times so the wound can breathe and heal,” he told the young man.“No problem there. When I switch up, I won't wear it when with the Dark Lord. That'll give it plenty of time.” Harry told him, reaching up to rub his eyes. Sighing, he said, “I need sleep. I'm done for. I'll go over everything in more detail tomorrow.”“If something is wrong, let me know,” Severus told him. Seeing the young man nod, he then swept out.Sighing when the man left, Harry grinned and shook his head. Still as prickly as ever, despite knowing the secret. Standing with a groan, Harry found his trunk then his pajamas and went to get changed into them so he could get some sleep.
Landing back in the Abbey, Barty slouched in relief. It had gone just as planned and worked perfectly. Thor had the cloak and would return it, Harry was safe and as well as could be expected. This was good. Seeing Voldemort and Sirius standing there, he bowed then said, “It's fine. Went just as you planned.”
“Good,” Voldemort said, pleased. Motioning the man to follow, he said, “I want filled in on any information you picked up then will get you up to speed on what's going on. Also, to hear what you and Severus have in place to protect Harry.”“As you wish, my Lord,” Barty said, trailing along.Stopping and looking at Black, he said, “He'll be fine. He's well protected. It's nothing to worry about and he'll be back tomorrow. If you want, you can go stay in your place. If anything arises I need help with, I'll yell.”Feeling better at being reassured Harry was fine and it all went according to plan, Sirius said, “I'll head out to get some sleep. If you need me, yell.”“I will,” Tom told him with a nod before continuing on to his study. “Severus is making damned sure that Albus can't get in?”“He's got everything in place that he can get,” Barty assured him firmly. Lowering his voice, he asked, “How is he? I mean, I saw him, but there wasn't much time to talk.”Leading the man into his study, Tom took a seat behind the desk. Leaning back, he sighed and said, “There is still some confusion and, as he calls it, 'fuzziness', but he's doing quite well. He'll be more than a match for anyone that thinks they can do something with him. Don't worry about it. With each day he improves.” Motioning for the man to get on with it, he waited to see what Barty may have picked up. It wouldn't be much, he knew that, but any little bit helped.
Sitting out in his living room, Sirius was sipping at his beer slowly, trying to wind down. Since that curse hit Harry, he'd been on edge. This was the first time he was now alone and Harry wasn't around. There was no way he liked the fact that his godson was back at Hogwarts, especially since Harry hadn't fully recovered. However, Harry was in good enough shape that he could take care of himself, Tom had made damned sure of that. That helped the anxiety slightly. It didn't make it go away, there was no way in hell that was going to happen, but it helped. Now, sitting here, he was dealing with everything that had happened for the last few days. All of it seemed to converge and multiply, making it to where it was hard to sort through it.
Looking down at the floor, he shook his head. Really, he needed to talk to someone about some of this and it couldn't be Harry. He just didn't have anyone. Remus was always the one he went to when he did that. His old friend was only reachable by letter right now and he really couldn't send one to him directly. Then there was how to word it to get what he wanted across in case anyone else read it. That was a real problem as he didn't want to endanger himself or Harry. He just didn't know what to do.Sitting there, sighing, he tried to think. Glancing up and looking at some parchment, an idea hit. Grabbing it and a quill, he moved to the kitchen table. Taking a seat, bottle of beer at his elbow, he began to write. It was his thought that he would get everything out and down then he would go back and edit, change and make it as murky as he could so that Remus would get what he was saying, but no one else would. Then he would ask Harry to send it off for him. That wouldn't look at all odd as his godson was known to write to Remus. Perfect!Taking a sip of his beer, he looked down at what he'd written so far then went to work, pouring out all that had happened and what he was dealing with. He might not get a solution from Remus, but it sure as hell would feel better to get it out. Then, maybe, he would be clear headed enough to be able to think again so he could sort through the mess that was his life. That and the very uncomfortable feelings which were surfacing more often than he wanted them to. He didn't know here, but he thought that might be the way to go about this.
Shaking his head as he looked at Albus after tossing the book on the table, Kingsley said, softly, “While I appreciate you thinking of me with this, it's not something I want to take on. No, I feel I can better serve the war by staying right where I am, Albus. We need all we can recruit in the Aurors so that the other side of this mess doesn't have an advantage later on. I'm also not willing to take on anything like this without researching it more. I get what you're telling me about you suffering the repercussion, but I'm not willing to even risk, in the slightest, a backlash that's not named.”
Sighing, Albus nodded. He didn't like this. Looking around, making sure the privacy wards were in place in the small private room in the Three Broomsticks, he then said, softly, “We need someone in place as the Light Lord, Kingsley. I can't influence you, of course, but I do want to say that with my death approaching, if there is no Light Lord in place to counter the Dark Lord, what could come of this war won't be pretty. Yes, there is a resistance to anything Tom may try, but the power of the Light Lord is something that can negate so much there. That we need. We know we aren't going to get much help from the Ministry unless something changes drastically very soon. This is the best we have.”Looking at the book again, Kingsley shook his head, “No, Albus, this isn't something I'm willing to take on. I think, maybe, rather than concentrate on finding another Light Lord, we should worry about getting people in place in the Ministry that can help us. That will push plenty through that we can use later on. While doing that, you can find someone to take this on. I don't know who it would be though. Most of the younger crowd aren't involved in the Order. The others we know are just too young to take this on.”“That might be the way to go,” Albus conceded, stroking his beard as he did. This wasn't good and he knew it. Kingsley was about all there was when it came to the choices that were left for taking the position. From the tone of his voice and his expression, it was clear the man wasn't willing to do this. That left him wondering just who he could find to take it on. There was no one that he could think of, no one. The only ones that were a maybe were too young and didn't know enough magic to take on the tasks required to have the mantle bestowed on them. Even with his help in training, the only ones he could come up with would take far too long to learn what they would require. Now he was really lost and fumbling as to what to do.“I've heard some rumblings around about some that are going to retire soon. These are some really big names as well. Maybe we could start pushing for that? I've even heard Rufus is thinking about that. If he goes, we can get someone in there that can truly help us!” Kingsley told him emphatically.Perking up at that, Albus asked, “Where did you hear that from? I've not been privy to that.” If that was the case, it was something he could work with and push for. There were Aurors that were most definitely leaning in his direction, though not in the Order. Yes, if it were true he could use this.“It's going around the office,” Kingsley admitted. “You know what that's like. However, I heard him talking with Amelia Bones about it being a possibility. There was no one else around and I don't think they saw me. I think he's serious, Albus. There is plenty for him to do, he knows that, especially with Sirius' case, but he said something about his reflexes not being what they used to be and not liking that. This might be the big break we need to start sliding people in where we need them.”“It might, it really might,” Albus admitted with a firm nod. “Let me get in contact with a few higher placed people I know in the Ministry to see what they have to say. If they've heard the same thing or there is some move in that direction from Rufus, we can start pushing there and see who we can get that would fill the position. What others are you hearing about?”Leaning forward, elbows resting on the table, Kingsley began to talk about the ones he knew for sure were retiring and some he heard about. He also began to talk about those that were being discussed to take their place. As some of the ones in line to take over had very long histories of leaning towards the Dark aspect, he wanted to make damned sure Albus knew about them.
Sitting in his brother's kitchen, stirring his tea, Albus sighed. Though the meeting with Kingsley hadn't gone as planned, he at least had information that he needed and could use to further his plans. That he liked. Tapping his spoon on the side of the cup then setting it aside, he took a sip of the sugary tea then sat the cup down. “I think, maybe, the end may come sooner than I thought, Aberforth,” he told his brother with a sad sigh and shake of his head. “The curse it taking its toll in so many ways. My magic is heavily affected and I can't make it through the day without some help from Pepper-Up, multiple times usually.”
Coming back and sitting down, Aberforth grunted then shook his head, “You need to stop worrying so much about plotting and prepare for that, Albus. It's time to set your affairs in order and not bother with your schemes.”Sighing, smoothing down his beard, Albus told him, “I can't do that. There is so much riding on what I do that I can't just walk away. There are things I need to take care of before I die that no one else can attend to. And so much else that needs set in motion.”Snorting, Aberforth shook his head and ran his fingers through his beard. “Well, you won't do anyone any good if you hasten the inevitable by driving yourself too hard.” Looking at his brother, he glared at him, hard, and said, cryptically, “You may want to focus on what you have to do and pass on, not schemes that will shorten your time here, Albus. Some things are out of your control. Don't play with areas you shouldn't.”“It's nothing to concern yourself with,” Albus told him dismissively with a wave of his hand. “I have much to set in place, it's no more than that. I'm not in danger.” Hearing his brother snort, he added, gently, “I need you to step back in with the Order, Aberforth. I notice you've been absent for a while. With me looking at the end, they are going to need help.”“No,” Aberforth told him with a firm shake of his head. “I'm not going to do that, Albus. Until you can give me something beyond your word in the way of real proof when it comes to some of what you say is the truth of what's needed, I'm staying away.” Glaring at his brother, he said, “And leave school aged children out of this. It's a war for adults, Albus. Leave the kids out of it.”
Sighing, Albus said, “I just need you to trust me, Aberforth, nothing more.”“That's not happening and we both know why,” Aberforth shot right back. “You're my brother and I love you, but I don't trust you. You've proven I can't. Between what I know of you, and what you're like, on top of what I hear tending bar, I'm not going to play this game, Albus. You know better. Others just take your word for it and follow. I won't and we both know I have every reason in the world to take the stance I am.”Looking crestfallen, Albus nodded slowly, “I understand and accept that. Some hurts and ills can never be repaired.”Snorting, Aberforth said, “They could if the person that did it was repentant. You aren't, Albus. You think you're smarter than the rest of us so that gives you some kind of special privileges to manipulate people. Others don't see that part, but I do because I know you. Whatever you have in mind that deals with me you can just forget. Unless you give me rock solid proof that doesn't have the phrase 'just trust me, this is the way it has to be' involved in it.”“You know I can't divulge all I know, Aberforth,” Albus soothed with a placating wave of his hand.“I'm not asking for all, I'm asking for proof,” Aberforth told him firmly, eyes locked on his brother.“And I can't do that in most cases,” Albus told him with a sad shake of his head. “You would be a wonderful person to take over leadership, Aberforth. At least until someone else comes along.”“No,” Aberforth snapped, crossing his arms over his chest. “I'm not playing this game with you. I know you too well and know one of your schemes, Albus. Don't draw me in. If you want my help and me to take over, I need real answers with hard proof. Until I get those, don't even bring it up to me.”Giving his brother a sad look, Albus sighed, “Just think it over if you would. We need help here and the time is coming we're going to be desperate for it.”“And you know what you have to do to get it, Albus,” Aberforth told him. Taking a sip of his beer, he said, firmly, “Change topics or we'll argue.”Sighing, knowing his brother meant that, Albus began to talk of other things, but planned to revisit the subject soon with Aberforth.
