“Are you insane?” Draco hissed at Cygnus, who had started to turn and hex a muggle.
“What, you think they deserve protection,” Cygnus said mockingly. “They are insects.”
“They are human beings,” Hermione growled. “Although I can’t say the same for you.”
“Now, now,” the God chuckled. “Enough bickering.”
“Funny,” Draco said with a sneer. “I thought that’s what you did all day.”
The God’s black eyes turned to fire, burning brightly in rage. “Pathetic mortal!”
“Not quite,” Draco said with a smug grin. “Hades.”
Hades looked taken aback with the quick retort. He narrowed his eyes, orange flames turning to blue. “You know who I am?”
Draco cocked his head. “Why wouldn’t I?”
“No mortal knows the Gods anymore.”
Draco chuckled darkly. “Because you squandered your powers. You played petty games with mortals’ lives until they turned their backs on you, relegating you to mere myths and legends. Your spouses and lovers hate you. Even your own children hate you.”
‘Is it wise to provoke him?’ Hermione asked as she watched the God’s head erupt in flames.
‘Keeps him focused on us until we can figure out a way to get him off this boat and away from all of these muggles.’
‘And if you go too far, he’ll burn everyone to a crisp.’
‘But then he’d risk Zeus finding out before he was ready for it.’
Hermione frowned. He had a point. But she wasn’t so sure Hades was a rational God.
‘He’s a vain God,’ Draco reminded her. ‘An egotistical bigot. Sound familiar?’
She shivered. Yes, he sounded so much like Voldemort that she wanted to vomit. World domination. Only Hades had unlimited power where Voldemort did not. He had minions, lesser Gods willing to back him. The only things standing in his way were his two brothers who had no idea what was happening and them. A pure couple granted powers by the very Gods that Hades wanted to rule. They were the most powerful couple on the planet; the only ones to survive the greedy fingers of the Fates’ scissors. And they had done so without trickery, without making deals. They’d done it by obeying a simple decree… to balance the unbalanced.
“What do you know of the Gods,” Hades hissed. “We are the most powerful, the most-“
“Annoying bloody wankers I’ve ever read about in my entire life,” Draco drawled in a bored tone. “You claim power, magnificence beyond all comprehension. Yet, you want to rule us miserably pathetic mortals and you still refer to yourself as many. Gods. We. You only have power in the underworld. What are you doing here Hades?”
Hades shot fire from his nose but it was easily blocked by a silent shield. The God appeared quiet perturbed that he hadn’t singed anyone. He tried again, fire shooting from his eyes. While it was dramatic, it was quite useless. They’d practiced dodging fire for a very long time, especially since Draco could breathe it as a dragon.
“What is this?” Hades growled.
“Child’s play,” Draco said cockily. “Perhaps you should learn about your enemies before you fight them. I’m sure it would have solved hundreds of conflicts back before you lost your throne among men. It might have given you the key to winning. Us mere mortals have a saying Hades. Perhaps you should commit it to memory. Know thy enemy.”
“Mortal fools,” Hades hissed.
“And yet you’re depending on them to win you a war,” Draco drawled. “How amusing.”
Hermione watched curiously as Draco successfully baited the God, turning his attention away from the other muggles who still didn’t register that they were there. She counted that a small miracle. The next wonder was that Cygnus and Gregory appeared frozen in fear. It would be the perfect time to take them out, but did she dare risk provoking Hades to try it?
‘Do it love,’ Draco spoke in her mind. ‘There are only two outcomes, we die or he leaves.’
‘Not fancying dying right now,’ she growled back.
‘If we died, we’d gain some attention. Maybe we’ll find each other in the after.’
‘I know we will,’ she said sadly. ‘Eternity, remember.’
‘Something to look forward to then,’ he said affectionately.
She wanted to kiss him then, but he was still facing Hades, railing on and on about how stupid the Gods were in the past. It reminded her of the banter Harry had with Voldemort. She almost smiled. Draco was right. Know thy enemy. What was it with megalomaniacs? They seemed to have the insane tendency to want to hash out their failures, arguing that it wasn’t their fault until they were blue in the face. But even Draco’s tactics couldn’t keep the Gods at bay for long.
She concentrated on the two wizards behind the enraged God, willing Draco’s strength to enter her and combine with her magic. Two shots, two hearts, no more heartbeats. It would be harder to do by herself without raising her wand, but she had to try. Brandishing a wand would alert Hades. She closed her eyes, visualizing her target and then opened, twitching her fingers just so. She had to keep them close to the body so her movements wouldn’t attract attention. It required finesse and a certain twist of magic. One after the other, the two men crumpled to the ground.
“What have you done?” Hades bellowed.
Draco cocked his head dispassionately, a move that always made Hermione cringe. He looked so cold when he did that. If she couldn’t feel the remorse thrumming through him, she’d say he was no better than Lucius. He was an amazing actor. She’d actually fallen for it once and it almost cost her life. She’d never doubted him since then.
“I’d say they were weak at heart,” Draco drawled objectively.
“You killed them,” Hades growled.
“I saw no killing curse,” Draco said blandly. “We’re powerful but not that powerful. Even you can’t make a killing blow invisible.”
Hades looked taken aback. Draco was right after all. Melody had explained that while the Fates could cut strings without warning, the rest of the Gods had to use magic, visible magic, to kill their foes. Since they’d used a medical spell, it was undetectable. For all points and purposes, they both died of heart attacks, just like before. Hades wouldn’t be able to prove anything.
“This is not over,” Hades growled.
“We didn’t expect it to be,” Draco said. “But do you really want to make a scene here?”
Hades snorted. “It would take seconds to finish you.”
“But you’d risk your brothers finding out,” Draco said.
Hades was about to throw fire again when a clearing of a throat stopped him.
“Are we interrupting something?” Melody asked, walking casually across the boat. Alex, Harmony and Philippe were hot on her heels. Draco and Hermione breathed a sigh of relief. They might not be out of danger yet, but the odds were a little less stacked against them.
“No,” Hades whispered. “It cannot be.”
“Oh please,” Melody sniffed. “Surely you, of all people, recognize the work of your nieces.”
“Fated twins,” Hades hissed. “This is not your fight.”
“You’ll soon find that it is,” Melody countered. “You’ve got a lot more to deal with than a couple of vigilante wizards Hades.” She looked over his shoulder and smiled. “In fact, I’d say you’re quite outnumbered.”
Draco and Hermione looked over and saw something that made them relax, though it was probably not a good thing. Then entire family had gathered, looking slightly wary and more than a little smug. They worried that they’d just waved a red flag in front of a bull but there was nothing for it. Hades turned and the flame on his head went out. He knew he was outnumbered. They started breathing again. He wouldn’t challenge them here. Would he?
“Awww, is it over?” Rhapsody called as she walked over. They cursed her in their heads for trying to aggravate him.
Hades snarled. “I’ll take you all now.”
“And risk Zeus and Poseidon finding out?” Rhapsody said with an ugly sneer.
Hades paled, the fire in his eyes dying.
“That’s what I thought,” Rhapsody said.
“Another time,” Hades growled.
“Name it,” Melody hissed.
Hades turned, eyes narrowing. “On the plain. Samhein.”
“Done,” Melody said haughtily.
Hades gave a curt nod and disappeared.
“Halloween,” Harry breathed.
“Deja Vu?” Melody asked.
“You could say that,” Harry said hoarsely.
“Well, we’ll have a little time to prepare,” Melody said. “Let’s get off this blasted boat and go home.”
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
“Is that everyone?” Melody called.
Draco and Hermione took roll. The adults were all there. All of their children and their mates were present. They even accounted for every daywalker left. But there were still more that were coming in, elves, fae, nymphs, merpeople, werewolves, vampires and more. They’d put out a call for war as soon as Hades had fled the boat. News traveled faster in the creature world than the magical one apparently because people started arriving at the Ranch that night.
“Everyone accounted for,” Draco said. “And several dozen that we had no clue were coming.
Melody nodded. “Hopefully there will be more. Moira will have an army we’ll have to fight.”
“But the Gods,” Hermione said.
Melody frowned. “Who did Voldemort send in first?”
“The pawns,” Hermione whispered.
Melody nodded. “Unfortunately, the pawns in this game will be them. We can give them the tools to help them succeed, but we’ll still lose people.”
“What exactly is the plain,” Draco murmured.
“Exactly what it sounds like,” Melody said softly. “It’s a vast amount of land, completely flat. I’ve heard there are trees and rocks and water, but not one really knows for sure. It’s located in another dimension, between ours and the Gods.”
“Will our magic even work there?” Hermione asked.
Melody nodded. “Our magic and their magic have the same foundations, the same power source. They gave the first mortals their power. If they cut off our magic, they couldn’t use theirs either.”
“Why did they give us magic?” Draco asked.
Melody shrugged. “Keep things interesting I guess. Then again, some think it was to grow more magic, or to control the amount of wild magic there was in the universe. Either way, the fact is we will be able to operate exactly as we do here.”
“But will we be able to take everyone?” Draco asked, eyeing a group of daywalkers who were hissing at a lone werewolf that had stumbled in. He knew the werewolf from Michael’s memories. It was a straggler from the group they took the female from, bent on revenge for his leader.
Melody hummed. “Yes. The plain is entered through intent.”
“Won’t that catch the eyes of the Gods?” Hermione asked.
“We can only hope,” Melody sighed. “Nemesis remains quiet though. I imagine Zeus isn’t an easy guy to just drop in on. And there is still Poseidon to consider. If ever there was a rock and a hard place, that guy was in it.”
“How do you figure?” Draco asked.
“If you had to choose between helping your brother overthrow a dictatorship rein that stifled your powers and undercut your very existence at the risk of world collapse or helping your brother maintain control over the razor thin line of balance that was already shaky at best at the risk of sacrificing a foothold on your realm and possible world collapse, which would you do?”
“Ouch,” Draco said with a wince.
“Yep, ouch,” Melody sighed. “In all actuality, Hades drew the short straw. But, the more dead people there are, the larger his rein so he really doesn’t care who he destroys. But, there has to be balance. Instilling mortals with magic might have grown power, but it’s dangerously unstable as it is. Imagine if you two just cut loose one day, decided your new motto was ‘fuck it’ and used your powers however you saw fit. It could mean Armageddon, right?” They nodded. “Well, that’s kind of what Hades’ is wanting. Hell on earth. Poseidon has always ruled the sea. He’s sort of the middle guy. Janet from the Brady Bunch. It’s always Marsha, Marsha, Marsha, or Zeus, Zeus, Zeus in his case. Zeus isn’t the best big brother, or husband, or… God in general, but he holds the cards. Say what you will about the guy, but he has maintained balance. But unless Poseidon cut a deal with Hades, he’d lose his foothold either way. So, who do you back? A God with the backing of other Gods and mortals… or a God who has always won?”
“We need to talk to Poseidon,” Hermione said.
“Fat chance,” Melody said.
Nate came racing up from the field so fast he was a blur. He startled everyone. “Um… sorry to interrupt but… maybe not.”
“What do you mean?” Melody asked.
He pointed at his mate who was still talking to Zach and Vi. “Ana might be able to gain an audience.”
“Of course,” Melody sighed. “He might be willing to talk to one of his own. But it would be cutting it close. We don’t have a lot of time here.”
“Two weeks,” Draco said. “Do you think she could gain an audience by then?”
Nate shrugged. “I honestly don’t have a clue… but it’s worth a shot, isn’t it?”
Melody patted his arm. “Talk to her. Run it by Rhap. It’s really kind of the only move we have, besides training.”
Nate nodded and raced back over.
“Think it will work?” Draco asked softly.
Melody huffed a laugh. “What do we have to lose?
AN: Whew. I tell you what guys. My Muse is a bitch. Two weeks, writing an entirely different story, editing another, and I still had to fight with this chapter. Hopefully the next will come quicker. I won't give up though, so don't worry. I won't abandon this thing. If I have to fight one sentence at a time, I will. As always, thanks everyone for your reviews. They do help. Keep them coming and let me know how I'm doing. Until next time... love you guys.
