I do not own any of the characters or places from the Harry Potter books or films. They all belong to J.K. Rowling. All that is mine is Sky, the houses in the wall and the plot. Oh, and the wand is mine too. I am not making any money from the writing of this story.
No One Comes When You Cry
Chapter 56
Sky spent most of the following few days in the wall.
Severus would pop in from time to time to make certain she was alright and was eating.
Not that he needed to worry, as the founders themselves were most insistent that Sky take regular rests and ate properly. Much to Sky’s annoyance. Effy too did her bit, forcing Sky to eat her meals in the kitchen so she would not be scribbling on parchments or looking through tome after tome when she was supposed to be eating.
Albus had a mirror sent to the wall. It was a tall, slim plain mirror in a dark wood frame.
Rowena sat engrossed in one of her runes books, every so often copying something down onto a piece of parchment, and Sky would bring forth the image of Voldemort, and then use her wand to inscribe the runes onto the frame.
Helga studied charms to work with the runes, while Sal and Godric discussed the various blood rituals they thought might be incorporated into the mirror to help hold the spell in place for as long as it was needed.
“Albus I am concerned about this part of the revised prophecy. It clearly states ’thrice blessed‘, I hope that does not mean her having to do anything dangerous whilst she is carrying our sons. Gods that did not come across as I meant it to.” Severus ran his fingers through his hair in frustration.
“I know that Severus. You want her equally as safe even when the children are born.”
“Yes. Yes of course I do.” He let out in a tense but relieved voice, glad that his friend had understood his original statement. “But thrice blessed, what else can it mean other than the … “ Severus’ eyes narrowed as his thoughts moved further back in time. “It is not the triplets that the prophecy refers to Albus.”
“It isn’t? So what conclusion have you come to Severus?”
“Thrice blessed Albus. One; the stone she wears. Two; the wand of bloods.” Severus stopped his pacing and called for Effy.
“Yes Sir. You is wanting something?”
“Effy, ask Shannon if she would mind coming to the Headmasters office would you.”
Effys eyes widened, then she nodded and disappeared.
Less than a minute later Shannon silently appeared in the room. “What is so important that you ask to see me?”
Severus turned to her. “Shannon, that night you took Sky to meet the Original, he … blessed her I believe.”
“So?” Shannon asked, eyeing him curiously.
“Shannon Sky has already shown me what transpired that night, but I need to know why it was done, what it means.”
Shannon cackled as she peered up at the dark man before her, yet somehow managed to look down her long, pointed nose as she did so. “I think you have already figured out most of it for yourself, think. Use that formidable mind of yours and you will have the answers.”
“The wand and pendant, they are the first two blessings yes?”
“And no.” The old elf replied. “The wand and the eyes are one, working together for her.”
Severus was confused now. “Well that puts paid to my theory. I was so certain that the wand and the stone were two of the blessings, while the Original giving his blessing was the third.” He spoke only partly to Shannon, and partly to himself.
“Think you fool.” The elf told him, causing the wizard to raise his eyebrows and Albus to stifle a chuckle.
Severus’ jaw tensed. “What do you think I have been doing? Something is missing but I cannot figure out what.”
“Then I suggest you look deeper into yourself. The wand and stone give her much power, stronger magic than any normal wand could provide. The Original’s blessing gives her protection, and the ability to protect herself most magical assaults, as well as increasing her wandless powers. Only the third blessing allows her to combine all of these so she can safely bring about the end of the darkness that devastates our world.”
Severus was still no wiser as to what the third blessing could be and again began pacing the floor angrily.
“Severus, I think what Shannon is trying to say, what she is hoping you will realise for yourself, is that you are the third blessing. Is that not right Shannon.”
Shannon cackled again and disappeared as silently as she came.
Severus turned to the headmaster with a sardonic expression on his face. “Of course. Why did I not realise. Me, a true wizard of the light.” He ranted sarcastically. “I should have known from the start that only one as untainted as I could be considered a blessing. Gods Albus, the elf, and you for that matter must be insane if the pair of you see me that way. The very idea is inanity in it’s purest form.”
“Is it Severus? Think about it. When you found Sky you professed to dislike her.”
“I hated her Albus. I resented her, loathed her.”
Albus held up a hand. “Severus let me finish. You professed to dislike her, could have left her where she was when you first discovered her. I would have known no different. You brought her here and healed her body, then you healed her mind, taught her the basics of humanity. Then you proceeded to teach her to read, write, instilled in her the most fundamental of learning’s. You did not have to, but you did. True you resented being left to tend her on your own, and even tried to harm her on more than one occasion. Yet over time, you came to see that what you originally felt towards the young woman was something completely different. Though at first you fought those feelings, putting them down to base urges on your part, you grew to understand that those feelings went deeper than you ever imagined possible. You fell in love Severus, and it is your love for Sky that is the third and final blessing. Your love for her that combines the various magic’s that will enable her to defeat Voldemort and hopefully enable her to survive the ordeal.”
Severus’ jaw fell slack at the Headmasters revelation. Could it be true? Salazar had told him that it was his love that helped heal her after she was attacked by the re’em, when he was make the blood potion and using dark magic to heal her, it was Severus’ love for Sky that made his own flesh and blood potent enough to make the potion work. Could it really be that he Severus Snape, was a blessing in disguise? There was a time when he would have scoffed at such a concept, yet if what Salazar said were true, and now Albus, and the old elf Shannon. He did not know quite how to react to this latest bombshell. To say he was stunned would be an understatement, as would be the fact he was rather proud of the fact he played such an integral part of what Sky was. Is.
“So now you know Severus. Without you, Sky is weakened, her powers will not bond fully. You, or rather your love, is what holds her together. I have always said that love is the strongest, most powerful magic there is.”
Severus’ brow furrowed at the headmasters over-sentimentality. Yet however hard his mind tried to dispute those sentiments, he could not.
He walked slowly back to the dungeons, contemplating what he had learned and considering its implications.
If he had left the pile of rags to fester and rot that day, and he was sorely tempted to at the time. If he had done no more than leave her to the elves when he returned to Hogwarts. If he had succeeded in raping her that day before her wand turned on him. If the sorting hat had placed her instead of rejecting her that day. So many if’s, yet here he was, here they were, married, three children on the way, and sharing a love he could only think of as pure, regardless of the carnality of their relationship. His love for Sky had grown slowly, snuck up on him and spread through him like a slow acting, undetectable potion, uncontrollable, unstoppable, irreversible, until it took over and filled him to overflowing. And Sky returned that love a thousand fold. As he had healed her, so she had healed him. As he had saved her life, so had she saved his. Sky had done more than save him physically; she saved him spiritually and emotionally. She gave him her all, willingly, unquestioningly, when she did not even know what she was giving.
So it would appear he was necessary for the downfall of the Dark Lord. Considering it was a need to be noticed, a desperate desire to be someone of note, someone of importance, a young man who’d felt isolated from the majority of his peers, that led him to take the mark in the first place, how ironic that his needs and desires were now coming to fruition to rid them of that same despot. And all because he had learned to love, and accept it at the same time. All this time he’d considered Sky to be a blessing, and now he too was one. It made his heart feel lighter than it had in a long time, though he still fretted at the thought of what she must do. Severus thought again of the image of his sons when they were up in the hospital wing. “My sons.” He thought aloud, loving the sound of those two little words. “My sons. My wife. My love. I am a blessing.” Repeating the words softly to himself, Severus was in the dungeons before he realised and was surprised to find himself standing outside his own door.
The students were back at school and it was almost Halloween before Sky finally came up with a way to hold Voldemorts image in the mirror.
After finding a small phial of blood with the name ’Tom Riddle’ in the back of her potions stores in the wall laboratory, along with a jar labelled ‘Testicle. Tom Riddle‘, Sky used some of each to put together a holding potion and daubed it onto the rune markings she’d inscribed with her wand around the edge of the mirror itself, rather than the frame.
Godric found an ancient spell to make the potion adhere to the runes and then for the runes to absorb it, distributing throughout the glass and placing it in a kind of movable stasis so they could see Voldemorts movements constantly, wherever he was once Sky brought forth his image. A simple ‘Fin’ was all that was needed to end the window into his activities, and an equally simple ‘Relevare’ to bring it back. If required, Sky could bring forth someone other than the Dark Lord and he or she would be under the same observation until Sky used her wand to change it again. She practiced on Severus, Albus and the house elves for a whole afternoon before telling Severus that the mirror was ready for use. Although vaguely similar in it’s properties to a scrying mirror, it had the advantage of not needing another in the same room as the person being watched.
The main problem was whether it should be secreted somewhere at Hogwarts or at Order headquarters so it was available to all of the Order members. It was finally decided that Number 12 would be the best place for it, in an unused room and under a disillusionment spell unless someone was actually looking in it. That way if it should the room be entered by a child of one of the Order members, they would not see anything untoward.
Also, it would mean that Albus was not confined to his rooms having to watch the mirror constantly, whereas number 12 was always occupied by at least three or four members at any given time, so someone would always be available to see if Voldemort was beginning to put his plans into action.
The Order of the Phoenix members were enthralled with the mirror and there was no shortage of those willing to take turns watching the tyrant. Hermione said it was similar to a programme called ’Big Brother’ on muggle television, but not many actually understood the humour in what she said.
Albus held his usual Halloween ball and Sky waddled in happily to enjoy the festivities. Severus refused to leave her side for a second, not even going outside to blast errant couples from beneath the bushes, instead leaving the task to Flitwick and Minerva. Poppy was on standby since it was quite possible that Sky could go into labour any time between now and the end of November.
Steven Barks risked the Potion Masters wrath by approaching Sky and actually sitting down at the table to talk with her. Severus’ glared intensely at the young boy, but Steven refused to be intimidated, so enthralled was he with his Professors wife.
He thought Sky was funny, she enjoyed listening to some of the antics he and his friends would get up to when not in class and he liked the way she would always set herself on a level with him, rather than speak down to him. He told her a little about his family, his parents were muggles and he had four older brothers and a younger sister. Steven and his sister were both magical and Emma was due to start Hogwarts when Steven would be starting his sixth year.
Sky enjoyed hearing about Stevens family and his life at home. What it was like for him growing up and the close bond the family seemed to share. It was the first time she’d ever heard about family life and she was more than intrigued by it.
Once they realised Steven had not been turned into a Grindylow, or that the Potion Master did not snatch the boy away to put into a preserving jar for later use in potions, many other students braved Severus’ scowls and black looks to sit and talk with Sky. The girls especially wanted to talk about her pregnancy and offer themselves for babysitting duties once they were born.
Within the week, parcels began to arrive at the breakfast table containing tiny outfits, romper suits, cardigans, little cotton gowns and bootees from the older female students. Some were purchased, some were clearly handmade and so misshapen they were unusable, yet Sky made sure to thank each and every one of them for their gifts and made each one seem special.
The staff clubbed together to purchase a muggle buggy that held three babies from birth to four yeas old and the Order bought three identical cribs, each with it’s own set of bedding hand made by Mrs Weasley.
The first week in November, while Severus was busy teaching class, Sky sat in the kitchen of number 12 under the watchful eye of Mrs Weasley, Tonks and Remus. The older witch was trying to teach Sky how to charm knitting needles and wool to follow a pattern for a matinee jacket when Sky suddenly turned white. She felt an odd feeling, like a mild pop low in her abdomen and the next she knew she was peeing herself. Her white face turned vivid red in embarrassment, her eyes flying round the room as she panicked, wondering how on earth she’d managed to wet herself in front of these people and how she could charm it away without them noticing.
Unfortunately for her, or fortunately, Remus had a keen sense of smell and immediately picked up on the scent of amniotic fluid.
He leant over and took Sky’s hand gently in his own as he noticed her distress. “Sky it’s alright. What just happened is normal.” He turned to Molly and said, “Molly, Sky’s waters have just broken.” Then his hand slipped from Sky’s as he fainted and slid under the table.
Molly immediately rushed round to Sky’s side of the table and cleaned up the mess, then she helped Sky stand, ready to lead her to the fireplace so they could floo to Hogwarts. As she stood, Sky felt the most terrific pain rip through her stomach, doubled over, and screamed.
Tonks banged her head on the underside of the table where she’d been knelt trying to revive Remus. “Ouch. What the hell was that?”
Sky cried out again and Molly turned her in the other direction. “Well it looks like the floo is out for you dear, the babies are on their way now so I’ll need to get you settled in a bed. Tonks, floo through to Hogwarts, alert Poppy as to Sky’s condition then let the headmaster know, he can get Severus and bring him here.”
Molly barely got Sky through the kitchen door before she doubled over in pain again.
“Merlin, those contractions are too close for comfort, I hope Poppy doesn’t take too long.” Molly stated worriedly. Molly had delivered babies before for witches, she had seven children of her own for goodness sake, but triplets were a whole new kettle of fish as far as Molly was concerned and she did not wish to be left alone to deliver them all.
Tonks meanwhile was flying round in her own whirl of disorganised chaos. Instead of floo calling Poppy, she actually stepped through the floo and went flying straight down to the dungeons, slammed open the door to the potions classroom and shouted at Severus to “Get your arse to you know where now. The babies are coming.”
Severus and the students did not even have chance to respond to her outburst before she was running through the halls to the infirmary. “Poppy. Poppy the babies are coming and she can’t use the floo because she’s wee’d everywhere so Molly said to come and get you.” Tonks then took a great lungful of air to compensate for saying all of that in one breath. “The Headmaster.” Tonks ran off again.
Severus did not even dismiss his class of third year Ravenclaw/hufflepuffs. He stared at the empty space for five seconds from where moments ago Tonks had yelled at him, then dropped his quill and marched from the classroom, waving his wand to banish all the half brewed potions from their cauldrons on his way.
Poppy grabbed her emergency bag and floo’d directly to Headquarters and was almost pushed to the floor when Severus floo’d in directly behind her, both of them stumbling before righting themselves.
Giving the half dazed Remus a passing glance, they both tried to get through the kitchen door simultaneously when a scream rattled through the house.
“Poppy.” Severus growled. “Severus.” poppy exclaimed at the same time.
“My wife.” He stated. “My patient.” She argued, both of them still stood side by side at the doorway.
Another scream and Severus almost pushed her through the door ahead of him, then barged passed her, taking the stairs two at a time, only to run down them again when he realised the screams were coming from downstairs and Poppy had beaten him to it.
