Chapter 55
Beta'd by Tenchi (love you, woman!)
Stepping out onto the Astronomy tower about the normal time for him, Harry grinned. Draco was there as always. Good. Ensuring the privacy warding was in place, seeing Draco's head come up, he pulled the cloak off his face a little so his friend could see him then walked over and took it off. Sitting down with a sigh, he lit a fag and inhaled deeply. This was good. Going about this part of what he planned was the way to go as he would have someone watching his back. Leaning against the wall, he said, “Keep the map out to make damned sure no one takes it in their head to come up here.”
Nodding, pleased with this turn of events, Draco did that, suspending it so they could keep an eye on it. Quietly, he asked, taking another drag of his ciggie, “What the bloody hell happened? It had to be bad for you to be out of commission.”“Assassination attempt,” Harry told him then gave him the details. Shaking his head, he added, “I'm still fuzzy as hell and tired, but am dealing with it.”Eyes wide, Draco looked at him then began to stammer softly, “Oh, hells bells, that's bad! Your chest? Is it alright?”“Hurts still, that's for damned sure,” Harry admitted with a shrug. “I've got the burn covered the best I can for now. Once it heals enough for me to use magic, I'll be better off.”Shaking his head, Draco didn't know what to say here. He had known it was bad, but didn't think it was something like this. Swallowing thickly, he asked, “What are you going to do about that rat bastard?”“He'll get his,” Harry told him with a grim smile. “I've been wanting that for a long time, trust me. He never was one of my favorite people in the whole world. This is a damned good reason to get rid of the useless bastard, that's for sure. He's worthless anyway.”“Yeah, completely understand that,” Draco nodded, lighting another ciggie with the glowing end of his dying one. “You going to be alright taking back over what you were doing?”“We'll see,” Harry sighed, shaking his head. “Most of it is going to be fine. I'm thinking of taking this as an opportunity to drop a couple of things, like Quidditch. That'll ease up plenty of things for me. The game is this weekend and I'm not going to be up for doing that, no doubt there. Let me see what I can manage then I'll go from there. For a week or so, I'll be a little off, that's for sure. I'll manage, don't worry.” Nudging Draco, he said, “Get me the assignments for the last week on the classes we share so I can do some work while sitting down there. That way I won't be so far behind when I come back. Give them to Snape and he'll get them to me. Plus, it'll give me something to do as it's bloody boring just sitting in that room alone. I'm used to being far more active than I am right now.”“I'll do it tonight,” Draco promised with a nod of his head.“Good. That'll only leave me with a couple of classes to get caught up with,” Harry sighed in relief, shaking his head. Running his fingers through his hair he said, “It's a bloody mess we sure as hell don't need, but no way around it.”Silent for a minute, Draco then said, quietly, keeping his voice down, “I was worried about you. I knew it had to be bad if someone came in to take your place.”“Yeah, it left people scrambling, that's for damned sure,” Harry said, shaking his head. “Not to mention a shite-tonne of other things to deal with when he had no real way of going about it. It worked, that's all that matters, I suppose.”“At least you made it out of it.” Stopping, he looked at Potter and asked, “Do I dare ask how you managed it again?”“That's one I'm not going to tell you, at least not now,” Harry said quietly with a shake of his head. “I will at some point, just not right now.”Accepting that, Draco nodded and pressed on to something else. “The house of the lions is going to hate it if you give up Quidditch,” he snickered, shaking his head.“Let them,” Harry grinned. “I have enough on my plate right now that something such as that needs to go. This might be the way to lighten my load. We'll see. I don't know for sure there, though I want to.”Nodding, Draco told him, “I can see why you'd want to, that's for sure.”“Let's see what happens this weekend and I'll go from there,” Harry sighed then pressed on to ask about what had gone on since he was out. He would get this from Thor as well, but wanted to hear what Draco had to say as he, sometimes, heard things the teachers didn't. That always helped.
Landing in the Abbey that night, Harry shut his eyes for a minute to fight off the slight wave of dizziness that had come from the Apparation. When he opened them, he grinned a little then shook his head. Tom and Sirius were there waiting, of course, but so was Barty. Putting the Time Turner up, he stepped out and said, “It's good. No problems.”
Pleased with this, Tom nodded, “Good. Everything is going fine on that end, I take it?”“No problems,” Harry said with a firm nod.“I was worried,” Barty admitted with a grin.“Nothing to worry about, it's covered,” Harry grinned back.Clapping his godson on the back, Sirius grinned, “Good! All kinds of things could go wrong and we knew it. Glad you made it out.”“I'm good, don't worry. Something is in place and it'll work.” Shaking his head, he said, “I need some rest though.”“We'll get filled in tomorrow and bring you up to speed,” Tom told him, motioning the other two to head out before leading Harry up the stairs.
Sitting propped up in bed after removing the makeup, leaving his shirt off so that the wound could air out after putting the cream on it, Harry walked Tom through what he was thinking about Quidditch. “Yeah, I know why we wanted to do this and how to keep up normal appearances, but this might be a good idea here. I can focus on other areas if I get rid of that. We have so much coming, not to mention Dumbledore plotting whatever he is, that I think something needs to go and this should probably be it.”
Taking a seat by his young lover on the bed, Tom looked down and thought it over then gave a slow nod. “I can see the point here. I say this; if they can manage without you this game, give it up. Let someone else take over. Just mention that what happened put you far behind and go with that.”Sighing, relieved, Harry nodded, “Yeah, because it has. Just not in the way everyone thinks it did. One less stress I need to worry about here.”Sliding an arm around Harry, Tom pulled him close then said, softly, “We need to kick some things into high gear here and get it moving, like your solicitor being seen with you at school. With what's coming, we need to get that out there now. We'll wait until you're out of quarantine, but we'll push for after that then go from there. I don't want this looking odd for what's coming. And that's approaching so we need to worry.”“Understood,” Harry told him with a firm nod. Rubbing his eyes, he shook his head then said, “We also need to plan for that crazy old man to step things up as well. If he gets even the slightest wind that I might be up to something that might derail his plans, he's going to pull some trick out of that bag of his. We need to worry what it might be, too. He's already working to stack the deck. We don't need any more being thrown at us.”“Very true,” Tom sighed, resting against Harry. “We'll work with it as it comes, Harry, don't worry. Let's see what I can get Severus to manage and see what he might know or can find. I have a few others I might be able to enlist as well. I'm not sure there, though. We'll handle it, of course.”Leaning against Tom, Harry quietly told him, “I just want this to be over and wish there was a way to do that. I don't know, sometimes, how much longer I can press on with what I'm doing here. I will, of course, but weeks like this one makes me feel stretched thin. And it will keep getting worse from here on out. We know Dumbledore is desperate and he's going to pull out something completely off the wall at some point that we're going to have to face. I—I just don't know sometimes.”“I completely understand,” Tom soothed gently. “We have a lot of irons in the fire we have to deal with and you're busier than most. Just give it a week or so for you to get back on schedule the way you were and it won't be so bad. Christmas break isn't far off. You can relax a little then and you should feel better when it's over.” This was, really, the first time Harry had said anything about feeling overwhelmed by all they did and the massive undertaking that was their plan. He could completely understand that as it had to feel overwhelming right now with what other parts he was dealing with. “I think, once you get rid of the some of the after effects you're feeling, you'll do better with what's there, Harry.”“I hope so,” Harry admitted quietly. “I like the rest, I'm not going to lie and say I don't, but am getting bored as well. It's making me a bit barmy. I also don't like feeling fuzzy like this. It has me on edge which is adding to the stress there.” Looking down, he slumped slightly, “It's nerve-wracking as I'm so wary about what that old goat is going to try to pull when I'm not on top of my game.”“Let Severus handle him,” Tom schooled firmly. “That's his job.”“Until tomorrow night when he's not there,” Harry told him looking in his direction. Shaking his head, he admitted, “I'm wondering if he might not take that opportunity to give something a shot with me. I'll handle it, of course, but I'm wary there, understandably.”Thinking that over, Tom gave a slow nod then said, “He may. Severus is being quite vigilant about keeping him away. He's tried once that I know of.” Looking down, brow furrowed, he said, “I think, maybe, this may be one summons I'll leave him out of, though I want as many there as I can get when it comes to this. No, he needs to stay in that castle to keep watch over you. I know you can easily handle yourself, but I don't trust what that man might do here.”“He's up to something big, we know that.” Harry said with a sigh. “I'd feel better if Snape is there to run interference.”“We'll go with that,” Tom told him. Looking at Harry, he said, “Let's get some rest. It should be an easy day tomorrow other than the meeting. We need you as up to snuff as we can have you for that.”Nodding, Harry leaned over and kissed the man then stretched out and shut his eyes. It felt better to be in bed with Tom once more, despite the fact that it had only been 24 hours since he had been.
Yes, I know, this is short. I'm going to do the end of Wormtail the next chapter then pressing on with a time jump to move on. So, no killing me!
