Chapter Fifty-Six: Coniuro (Plot)
The street was quiet, a cool breeze rustled the trees and bushes in people’s gardens. Street lamps flooded the pavements with stark orange light and a cat sat on someone’s wall, it’s tail flicked angrily when a sudden roar shattered the peace. With a hiss the cat jumped down from the wall and fled beneath a nearby car. A white light appeared around the corner preceding a massive black motorbike, its engine slowed to a dull roar as it came to a halt outside a house with a dark door. Sirius cut the engine and dismounted; he flicked a cigarette into some nearby bushes and shook shaggy hair back from his face. He glanced up to the sky and spotted the stars watching him with their tiny white eyes, he returned his gaze back to earth and began making his way up to the door. When he reached it he withdrew a key from his pocket and his wand, he opened the door and tapped the centre of it with his wand. Enchantments fell, the only indication of this was a slight ripple of the air as if a sudden wave of heat passed before it. Sirius stood in the dark entrance and gazed into the hall way, pictures hung from walls, their occupants moving and waving into shadows. A small frown creased his brow, his hackles rose as he felt something stirring inside him. Something was wrong…
A mistake…
A terrible, fatal mistake…
Cautiously, with his wand clutched in one hand he began moving into the house. Ahead of him he could see a room that had candles lit, he could smell the open fire, which was odd as it was high summer and it was still warm. His fear increased and he made each foot fall as silent as possible, it was made easier by the soft carpet beneath him. As he drew closer to the door he saw a stream of orange light sending a single finger into the dark hallway, voices reached his ears and he paused to listen;
“Tell the Dark Lord that I will give him information as soon as I have it, for now that’s all I can do.”
Sirius felt a chill run down his spine and he found himself staring at a picture hanging slightly lopsidedly upon the wall opposite him, it showed four boys wearing Hogwarts uniforms with big silly grins on their faces. He knew that picture as well as he knew the back of his own hand, he had one exactly the same.
“Wormtail, he’s expecting more from you. When will you give him the information he desires?”
“W-When I can Malfoy, I can’t let them suspect me. For now…for now he’ll have to wait.”
“He grows impatient.”
“I-I know…I just…I need time. Tell him I’ll give him what he wants, I just need to lure them into a false sense of security. Will he give me what he promised in return?”
“The Dark Lord never renegades upon his deals, Wormtail. Remember that when the Potter’s are lying dead at his feet, then you will have his protection.”
Sirius stood perfectly still, his eyes wide with shock and his chest burning as he held his breath. Was he hearing this correctly? Was Wormtail actually their spy? Had he been so wrong all this time?
A Mistake…
He had made a terrible mistake…
He had to rectify it…
He had to save James…
“I can wait…”
“Remember Pettigrew, if you even consider backing out of this now and the Dark Lord will hunt you down and make you regret it.”
“I-I understand…”
Sirius heard a whoosh as Lucius Malfoy left the house using Floo Powder. He took a small shuddery breath and gripped his wand, a car passed the house, throwing his shadow across wall. His face darkened, his eyes turning as hard and cold as steel. Fury radiated from him in waves, his breathing became heavy and he bared his teeth in a feral snarl. “PETTIGREW!” He screamed and booted in the man’s door. He had a brief glimpse of Peter’s terror filled face before bright, acidic green light filled the room.
It was so unexpected that Peter was almost killed, instead he flinched violently and a pot exploded into pieces by his head. He squeaked and tried to go for his wand, Sirius flicked his own and disarmed him. “S-Sirius…!” He gasped as the man advanced on him, his eyes were narrowed and his fury made them glitter with insanity.
“I heard everything!” Sirius growled, pointing his wand between Peter’s eyes. “I heard it all! You’re the spy! You’re the betrayer! And I thought it was Remus…” He suddenly spat at Peter’s feet. “You would dare betray Lily and James?! Betrayer! Filth! You’re unworthy to even lick the soles of James’ boots you pathetic, cringing creature! YOU WERE HIS FRIEND!” He roared and lifted a heavy booted foot, he kicked Wormtail in the chest so he was thrown backwards into the wall, he squealed but a flash of light from Sirius’ wand tore a gash in his cheek. “HOW DARE YOU?! HOW COULD YOU?!”
Peter lifted a hand to his face and touched the wound, he flinched and hissed air through his teeth as he gazed at the blood on his finger tips. “I-I…I didn’t want to…h-he threatened me, Sirius! What else could I do? I couldn’t refuse! H-He’ll k-kill me!”
Sirius’ fury was like a fire fuelled by the wind, he was uncontrollable, completely insane with hatred. His face twisted into violent disgust, marring his normally handsome features. “THEN YOU SHOULD DIE!” He screamed and lifted his wand once again. “I will gladly finish the job…SCREAM YOU PATHETIC, USELESS PIECE OF FILTH!”
Crimson light filled the room, casting eerie shadows on the walls and Peter did scream. His screams rent the air like physical force and Sirius grinned. Through Peter’s agony he whispered; “For James…”

James sat beside the fire, he gazed absently into the flames as he felt the presence of his wife sit at his side. Automatically they clasped hands and he turned to look at her. “Something’s not right, Lily.” He breathed and she nodded.
“There’s something happening…don’t worry James, we’ll be told about it If it’s anything serious.” Her smile was gentle as she lifted a hand and cupped his cheek, he returned her smile and they kissed a moment. “You miss him, don’t you?”
James nodded and sighed heavily, he returned his eyes to the fire and stared sadly into it. “How can I not? He’s…he’s my best friend…I love him.”
Lily smiled and ran her fingers across the palm of his hand. “He’ll be alright, James. He’s a powerful wizard.”
James nodded. “Yeah, but he’s not exactly in perfect control of all his mental faculties is he?”
Lily’s laughter was bright and easy and James let it warm his heart. “No, but for all that he’s a good man.”

Sirius stared blindly down at the corpse, he lifted his hands to his face and giggled slightly. Peter stared blindly up at the ceiling, Sirius on his knees beside him as he began rocking back and forth slightly. “It was you…it was you all a-along…P-Peter…Why?! WHY YOU BASTARD?!” He choked on a sob and lowered his head until a curtain of long hair fell across it. “It’s…my fault…isn’t it? I-I trusted you…” Slowly he reached out and put his fingers to Peter’s eyelids. “Don’t look at me that way…It had to be done or you’d have killed him. I can’t have him die, Peter…not now…not ever.” That deranged smile touched his lips as he leaned over the cooling corpse, he pushed fingers through Peter’s thin hair and giggled. “You scream like a girl, you pig. No one will lay a hand upon him…I love him, Peter. I’ve loved him forever, for ten years of my life I was merely waiting in the darkness and then he came along and made everything bright! It was…beautiful…” He sighed, his smile softening. “Of course, an animal like you could never understand that. How could you ever understand love?” He sneered and drew a flashing silver knife from his pocket. “You make me sick, to think that you would go to all that trouble to murder one of your best friends! All for your own fucking, useless head! It should have been me, Peter, I would have died for him! I would have died with a fucking smile, knowing I had done my duty!” He raised the knife above his head and brought it down, it pierced flesh like butter, pushing through muscle and bone with ease as the enchantments covering the small blade eased its passage. Finally it reached Peter’s still heart. “Enjoy your time in Hell, because when my time comes I’ll come for you! I’ll rip you to pieces over and over again for even thinking about betraying the only man I will ever love!”
Sirius stood up, absently running a hand through his hair, he was unaware of the crimson blood staining them. Slowly, as he took in the scene before him he realized what he had done. He had tortured and then murdered one of his friends, someone he had been close to since school. He backed away a step, eyes wide and uncomprehending, doubts began to flit through his mind, despite all that he had heard. “I-I…I did…this…?” He whispered, horror etched into every line of his face. “No…No…Oh please no…” He backed away again and tripped on a small occasional table, it shattered beneath his weight and he scrambled backwards until his back hit the wall. He pushed his hands into his hair, smearing blood over his face. “No…No Peter…no…” he threw his head back and gazed with huge eyes at the ceiling, darkness encroached upon his heart as he gave voice to a heart wrenching scream.

They found him there, leaning against the wall with his head down and a cigarette burning to the filter between his lips. The blood had long since dried upon his face and hands and when the Auror’s tried to make him stand he pushed them away roughly. They tried to question him but he only answered with a single word. A name; Dumbledore.
“What’s going on here?” Moody snapped furiously as he limped awkwardly into the house, sunlight drifted in through the windows and he was greeted with the sight of Peter Pettigrew’s corpse and a distraught Sirius Black. “Black? What happened?”
“Dumbledore.” Sirius croaked as he put out another cigarette into the carpet, he watched it hiss and smoke before finally dying.
“He’s on his way, what happened here?”
Slowly Sirius lifted his head, his eyes were dark and heavily lidded as he surveyed the hard Auror through a curtain of black hair. “Peter’s gone and copped it, hasn’t he?” He said and smiled, he let out a single bark of humorless laughter before it turned into a desperate dry sob. Moody frowned, the boy was obviously suffering some kind of trauma, he would get him to St. Mungo’s as soon as possible unless Dumbledore could get more sense out of him.
An hour passed as the Auror’s drifted around, guarding the room and attempting to find any clues as to what happened. Finally Albus arrived and swept straight over to Sirius who looked up at him and blinked once. Suddenly his face twisted into a mask of horror and grief, he grabbed thr front of Albus’ robes and dragged him so their faces were close. He gazed into those surprised blue eyes, tears streaming down his face as he spoke; “I did it.” He whispered and released his ex-headmaster. “It’s all my fault…everything…” He curled up and fell silent again, his head resting on his knees.
The Auror’s glanced at Moody who gazed down at the boy, he sighed sadly and shook his head. “Bring me his wand.” He said and his Auror’s brought the thin stick of wood to him, he pocketed it and made a signal with his hand. His underlings closed in and surrounded Black, they pointed their wands at him and he was wrapped securely in tight ropes and lifted off the ground. He hovered there, his feet brushing the floor, his head lowered so hair obscured his face. Dumbledore watched with a small frown as he was escorted from the house. Other’s began wrapping peter’s corpse in a bag and levitating it out into the dawn-lit street.

“No!” James snapped suddenly, the Auror at the door simply stared at him. “No…I will not accept it! It’s impossible. Sirius would never do that! He’s not a murderer!”
“I’m only passing on what we’ve been told, sir. Moody says that Black himself confessed to the crime.”
James faltered, he gazed at the man with wide eyes, his mouth hanging open slightly and a look of total, stunned disbelief on his face. “…he…confessed…?” He felt his legs give out beneath him and ended up falling into the wall, slowly he slid down it and buried his face in his hands. “I-its…it’s impossible…he…he would never…he said…he…Sirius…Sirius why?!”
Lily held Harry tightly, she stood at the bottom of the stairs and watched the Auror gravely. “Has he confessed details? What exactly did he say?” She asked, despising the way her husband was falling apart.
“He only said it was his fault.” The Auror shrugged. “I’m sure we’ll get more at his trial.”
“When is it?”
“In two days, Ma’am.”
Lily nodded. “James will be there.”
When the Auror had left Lily went to James’ side and placed Harry in his arms, together they leaned against the wall and embraced. “…I can’t believe it…I won’t…Lily he would die for me. He promised! He said…he’s always been so loyal…W-Why would he…? Now of all times…we’re exposed…h-he’s exposed us…H-he’s…betrayed me.”
“I’m sure he’ll explain everything, perhaps there is more to this than meets the eye. Don’t worry James, we’ll get Dumbledore to become our secret keeper and he will keep us safe.” She put her arm around his shoulders as he bent his head over his baby boy.
“Harry…we’ll protect you, I promise.” He whispered and watched his son sleep peacefully in his arms.

Sirius sat in the cell beneath the Ministry of Magic, he lay on the bare pallet bed they had given him and had one arm flung across his eyes. So far he had ignored all attempts to get him to speak, he would only stare into the distance and ignore them all. He felt a gut wrenching guilt fill him up, he felt as if he was slowly being destroyed inside out. He had taken a life, but not just any life…he had murdered someone who had been his friend once. He had known him for years, had laughed with him, he had played games and spent the summer with him. What he had done was unforgivable, James would never forgive him, why should he forgive himself? He rolled onto his side and stared across his barren cell, the bars were rusty but he knew magical enchantments had been woven into the very metal to reinforce them. Not that he would bother trying to escape, he had committed a crime and deserved to be punished. He moved his eyes so he was staring at his fingers, his hand rested by his head and he watched them twitch. He could feel Peter’s blood on them, it had cracked and dried now and it was flaking over his pillow. His clothes were stiff with it and he could smell it everywhere, it sickened him but he had not bothered to ask for fresh clothing. Peter had been a traitor but then he had lost his head and, like the Black he was, allowed fury to dictate his actions. He should have gone straight to Dumbledore and explained what he had heard, he should have confessed his plan to him and begged James’ forgiveness…but no…he had destroyed it all. He had snuffed Peter’s life out like a candle. He closed his eyes, gritted his teeth and curled into a tight ball. The self hatred was strong, it was like a physical wave of heat rolling through him and he wanted nothing more than to take something sharp to his own wrists and follow Peter to Hell. His eyes half opened and he took a shaky breath, he pictured James’ face in his mind’s eye, his smile, his hair, his face and his eyes. The pictures were so clear they made Sirius smile brilliantly, again he rolled onto his back and sighed softly to himself. “James Potter…I would do anything for you…you know that right?” He whispered to the darkness. It did not answer…

The room was circular with tiered seats going up against the walls, James sat with Lily and Harry beside Dumbledore. There were only a few people in the stands, the majority were people from the Ministry. James swallowed nervously, he adjusted his son who sat happily playing in his lap with a teddy bear they had brought along with them. Lily felt his distress and placed a comforting hand on his arm, he smiled weakly at her.
The doors opened and a dreaded chill preceded a pair of Dementors half-dragging Sirius between them. James gasped to himself and lifted his arms, he held his son close to his chest, protecting him the draining affects of the horrible creatures. Lily whispered something under her breath and suddenly a beautiful Doe leapt free of the tip of her wand and began pacing back and forth before them. James relaxed while Harry continued his random burbling. Sirius looked barley conscious, his face was so white it looked as if he was little more than a corpse, his eyes were almost black as he was dropped into the stone chair in the centre of the room. He slumped listlessly to the side, his head hanging low and his breathing rapid. James bit down hard on his lip and gazed at his best friend, he knew the Dementors would affect anyone with seriously distressed pasts and Sirius had a miserable childhood and an adult hood that left much to be desired. He was sprawled inelegantly in the chair, his white t-shirt crinkled and stained with crimson, his hands were shaking violently and it took an auror a minute or two to make him regain consciousness. When he did he sat up with a scream, he made to bolt but several Auror’s dragged him back into the chair and the chains glowed as they snaked around his wrists. Sirius struggled a moment before blinking rapidly, his eyes darted around the room, gaining his bearings and they landed upon James. The two stared at each other for a long time and suddenly James’ grip tightened on his son, he began shaking his head rapidly as he saw the agony and guilt in his lovers eyes. “No…” He muttered and stood abruptly. “No…Sirius…Tell me it’s not true. Tell me you didn’t….” Sirius said nothing, he merely gazed at James sadly and pain lanced through James’ heart like a bolt of lightning. Sirius had betrayed him. Sirius had murdered one of their friends. Sirius was a traitor…
Dumbledore leaned forward so he had a better view of the boy in the chair, he sighed softly and turned to James. Everyone was staring at him with wide eyes, a woman wept in a corner somewhere and Lily was as white as a sheet as she took Harry from James’ arms. “James, I would suggest you wait to hear Sirius’ side of the story.” Gently the venerable headmaster guided James back into his seat, Sirius looked away, eyes as dark as a stormy sky and his face still white beneath the shock of his black hair.
Bartemeus Crouch cleared his throat, everything went silent as he stood up and glared down at his prisoner. Sirius looked back at him, his face curiously blank. “Sirius Orion Black, you are here to be judged for the murder of Peter Pettigrew…What do you plead?”
Sirius clenched his hands into fists and lowered his head, hiding his face from James as it crumpled in agony. “Guilty…” He whispered, yet the word echoed through the chamber as if he had shouted it…James made a strangled noise in his throat and bowed his head.
