“What do you want?” Draco sneered, wand pointing straight as his father.
“To see if it was true,” Lucius drawled before narrowing his eyes at Hermione. “And I see it is. You’re a disgrace to this family.”
Draco couldn’t hold back the growl in his throat. “You’re the only fucking disgrace I see... father.”
Lucius’s cool grey eyes turned murderous. “Why you ungrateful little shit!”
“UNGRATEFUL!” Draco bellowed. “The only reason you are walking free, you miserable excuse for a wizard, is because I switched sides. I pulled every string in the fucking book so you could continue living your life on the outside of Azkaban. And how do you repay me? You lock up mother and threaten to blast me off the tapestry if I don’t marry some money hungry pureblood chit. Ungrateful. You’re the epitome of ungrateful.”
“That filth has your mind addled,” Lucius hissed.
It took everything Draco had not to throw the killing curse at his father in that moment. In fact, the only thing that held him back was a slight pressure on his lower back. Hermione. She’d subtly placed her hand there to steady him. They’d often talked about what would happen when he finally faced Lucius. She was lending him her strength and it was greatly appreciated but he couldn’t let his father’s slight go.
“She’s the pure one. You’re nothing but filth on the bottom of her shoes.”
It proved to be the last straw to Lucius’s infallible composure. He let out an ugly snarl before trying to disarm Draco. Draco flicked the hex away like a gnat. He wasn’t scared any longer. He’d long since known that his power far surpassed his father’s. It was only fear that kept him in check but no more. A few more hexes were exchanged before Emmanuel stepped in and called Lucius off.
“That’s enough,” Emmanuel said quietly. “We need them alive.”
Hermione felt her skin crawl when she heard the Healer’s voice. It took her back to her worst nightmare. She could feel Draco shaking with rage. Her mind immediately retreated back to the ROR, the stone table, her and Draco being killed so that they could end muggle-borns forever. It was ludicrous but somehow, this faction believed it. She couldn’t help the words that spilled from her mouth.
“You honestly think killing Draco and I will put an end to all muggleborns?”
Emmanuel’s mouth turned up a cruel smile. “The Dark Lord’s fatal flaw was that he did not know love. I, however, have learned never to underestimate it. You see, love has been the one thing that kept mudbloods around. If we sacrifice a loving mixed couple, we can use the blood to create a spell so powerful, it will keep them from being created.”
Hermione frowned. “That’s impossible. Muggleborns come from muggles with no magical blood whatsoever. There is no telling whether or not a child born of them would be magical.”
“Ah, but that’s where you’re wrong. Take your friends the Creeveys for instance, two brothers, both mudbloods from the same set of parents. This spell would prevent their parents from ever meeting each other, like a repelling spell.”
Hermione felt her stomach do a somersault. If the spell actually worked, her parents would be repelled away from each other. She would have never been born. But what if they would have had a magical child regardless of their partner? What would happen then? Would they be forever doomed to be alone or not created all together? She couldn’t fathom it.
“I think I’ve heard enough,” Harry snapped. “Form ranks.”
Instantly the group shuffled. Ron and Neville stood behind Hermione. Venus and Ginny flanked her sides. Harry and Luna stepped in front. Draco was stunned to realize that they’d lined up in order of height so they could shoot spells over the person in front of them and no one would have a clear shot at Hermione. He realized that Neville and Ron were allowing him to stand directly behind Hermione but that could have been because he was every bit as tall as they were.
“Foolish,” Emmanuel drawled. “Now you’re just a bigger target.”
Harry held his wand at the ready. “Perhaps. But you just try it and see how far you get.”
The street erupted in chaos. Hexes flew in every direction. Patrons at various businesses ran down the street screaming about the return of Voldemort. Several store owners ran out to try and take out some of the cloaked faction. Draco couldn’t help the bark of triumph when Madam Rosmerta took out a particularly crazy woman that reminded him a little too much of Bellatrix. Aberforth felled a big burly man who had a mean crushing hex.
Draco was busy deflecting every curse that happened to stray past the front line, even though his shield around Hermione still stood. He was pleasantly surprised that Venus was just as good a dueler as her father. In fact, he had a sneaking suspicion she was still holding back, though she’d managed to knock out several. But to his horror, the cloaked faction just kept coming, like they were multiplying from nowhere. He wasn’t tired but he had a feeling that they were outnumbered if not out skilled.
Time stood still for Hermione. She understood that if she moved or hexed anyone, the shields around her would break. That made her feel even more helpless. She wanted nothing more than to protect her daughter and could do nothing but stand there and let everyone else take the heat for her. It went against everything in her body. The first hit to her shield made her freeze. Draco shouted a curse that would have made Voldemort blush and flipped the hexer over eight times before he came to a halt… right on top of a sharp stick at the edge of a clearing. It pierced the man through the middle of the back and Hermione knew he wouldn’t survive.
Draco was shocked to see Aurors sprinting into the road, stunning and arresting as many of the cloaked figures as they could. They were starting to make a dent but they also broke up the tight group that surrounded Hermione. With the enemy spread out, they had to spread a bit to cover all sides. He remained beside his wife. No one would get to her if he could help it.
Hermione wasn’t sure what happened, but suddenly it was just her, Draco, Emmanuel, Lucius, and about a dozen members of the cloaked faction. Everyone else was spread out, dueling three or four of the black hooded foes. The Aurors were starting to slow, tire, become overburdened by prisoners. The street was littered with broken bodies. She counted the times she’d been hit and calculated that only Draco’s shield was still in place. The others had shattered under the strain, despite Draco’s heroic efforts.
“Can I cast through it?” she breathed.
Draco grunted and repelled another hex. “Yes, mine was one way.”
That was all the incentive she needed. She started dueling with Emmanuel. He was quick, crafty, and definitely powerful, but so was she. And she had another incentive, her daughter. She’d be damned if this insane healer would take her daughter from her. But the others realized she was good too and they all started in on her. Draco was locked in a duel with his father, trying his best to shield her while fighting him. He was stretched too far.
Before she could think further about how outnumbered they were, one of the faction fell with a scream. Then another and still another. Emmanuel threw halfhearted hexes as he looked to see what had taken out his comrades. Hermione breathed a sigh of relief when she saw their necks ripped open, though it shouldn’t have brought her any comfort. Only one creature would fight like that.
“SNAPE!” Lucius bellowed.
Another six members were taking out by a black blur before Snape appeared, blood spattered and bearing his fangs. Naomi was beside him looking particularly demonic as blood dripped from her mouth. One more pass and the faction was done. Only Emmanuel and Lucius remained. Snape went for Lucius but was knocked back with a powerful blasting curse.
“DADDY!” Venus cried and ran to his aid.
“Daddy?” Lucius hissed.
Snape held Venus off and smoothly got up. “You see, Lucius, you are not the only father here.”
Lucius’s eyes went so wide it was almost comical. “Who is your mother girl?”
Venus stood up defiantly, green eyes flashing in anger. “Lily Evans Potter.”
A purple hex went hurdling her way from the side but was blocked in a shower of yellow sparks. Harry ran up, panting. “Watch it.”
Venus gave him a soft smile. “Thanks bro.”
Harry shook his head and laughed. “Any time sis.”
It was the perfect distraction for Draco to knock Lucius on his arse. Hermione took that moment to blast Emmanuel backwards. They recovered quickly and to their horror, twin spells of deadly green were thrown at them. They could barely ponder the thought that they were supposed to be taken alive before two black blurs flew in front of them, taking the brunt of the curse. Snape and Naomi crumpled and Hermione screamed. In the next second, she and Draco were disarmed and being held at wand point by a few surviving members of the faction… and Lucius and Emmanuel.
Lucius sneered. “I knew he’d block it, always was a bleeding heart. Now, one more thing to take care of and we’ll be on our way.”
His wand lowered to Hermione’s abdomen and she felt blood roaring in her ears. He was going to try and abort the baby. Draco’s cry of rage barely registered as they both screamed “NO!” and shouted the most powerful blasting curse they knew. Windows shattered, wood splintered, people flew backwards, and the remaining faction members were knocked unconscious. Most importantly, Lucius and Emmanuel were down for the count.
Everyone still standing was staring at them. They’d just managed to destroy half of Hogsmeade… wandless.
AN: Dun dun dunnnnn. Wonder what the Aurors will think of wandless Draco and Hermione. As always, thanks to everyone for reviewing. I read them when I'm having a panic attack at work. Calms me right down. Keep them coming and let me know how I'm doing. Until next time... love you guys!!
