Hermione hadn’t let go of her fallen Master in a week and Draco hadn’t let go of her. They’d already been interrogated and pardoned from the unfortunate death of Lucius Malfoy. After all, Lucius had struck first and Draco had merely responded. She was in fear of her life. She’d read the of spell in an obscure potions book and it just… popped into her head. She didn’t even know what it did. The aurors didn’t question the attachment she had to her robes. They figured it was giving her comfort after such a harrowing experience. They didn’t know it contained the body of the man she owed her future to.
“You two should really eat or drink something.”
Hermione looked up and saw Lavender hovering over them, a look of worry on her face. She shook her head. She wasn’t hungry. Or thirsty. She didn’t even want to smoke or drink her problems away and getting high seemed like an easy escape. All she craved now was the feeling of her Master’s arms around her and the high his blood could give her. Life. Something he had given twice.
Lavender sighed and shook her head. “Ferdinand will intervene if he needs to. He refuses to turn me until you two are situated and I can’t believe it but I agree. He wouldn’t want you to wallow.”
“Why not,” Draco said flatly. “We were wallowing when he found us. Might as well do it again.”
Lavender put her hands on her hips and huffed. “So you’ll repay him by throwing it all away? Some pets you are.”
With that, she stalked out of Snape’s house and slammed the door none too gently. She’d been there for them since that day, pleading, begging. She’d even packed their bags and had Ferdinand move them to Snape’s house. She’d forced food and water down them to keep them alive. She’d even offered to procure some of Ferdinand’s blood in lieu of Snape’s, but that seemed like sacrilege.
“She’s right,” Hermione said, tears spilling down her face. She was sure she’d ran out days ago. She hugged the bat form of her master closer. “We can’t stay like this. He’d want us to continue on, build the apothecary, be successful.”
“Be happy,” Draco breathed. “But that’s not possible.”
“We still have each other,” she said in a tiny voice, unsure that he’d even want her now.
“That we do,” he said, his voice strained as he pulled her and the bundle closer. “That we do.”
They sat like that for another few hours, thinking about all of the things they’d done in the small timeframe they’d known their Master. It hadn’t been but a few months, but it seemed like years. Of course, they’d known him for years, both selfish and self-less, an enigma wrapped in a mystery coated with harsh words and tender actions. A hero. A villain. A savior in his own right. And theirs.
“We should get started,” she said quietly, thought she felt anything but ready. “Those potions for St. Mungos are all bottled and ready to be delivered. And we have rights to the dragon sanctuary and plenty of basilisk left. There’s the time turner and instructions on roc feather collection.”
He sighed. “I think he had all of the papers for the new apothecary drawn up and placed in his office, ready to sign the moment we graduated. We’ll have to find them.”
They set to work with heavy hearts, not wanting to continue on but forcing themselves to anyway, for their Master. They could only imagine the punishment that he’d put them through if he had seen them this way. They slowly worked their way back to some sort of semblance of human, eating enough to live, cleaning the house and lab, tapping into funds to finish the purchase of the apothecary. Snape had bundled everything they would need in one convenient pouch.
It took merely a few weeks for them to get the apothecary set up, the work of cleaning and stocking the shelves with what they currently had blissfully mind numbing. It was as close to a semblance of normal as they could manage. Draco took care of purchasing basic ingredients and Hermione worked on the advertising, both word of mouth and written. When they weren’t at the apothecary, they sat at home and studied the books for the next mission, the last Snape had mentioned to them. It would be precarious, traveling through time. There was only so much to be garnered from old history books, as the ones written before this century tended to be based more on speculation.
Draco pushed one of the tomes away and took a small sip of the water in front of him. “We should probably go on this trip before we open the apothecary. I have a feeling we won’t be able to get away for a while once it is up and running.”
Hermione nodded and looked down at her robes, still swaddling the little bat who was surprisingly still limp and not decaying. He’d not turned to ash. But he hadn’t woken up either. It was foolish to think he’d open his eyes again. But leaving him swaddled at home seemed… wrong.
“What should we do with him?” she cried. “We can’t take him with us and it doesn’t feel right to bury him.”
“We should take him to the Whomping Willow,” he said quietly. “Let his sire look on him one last time. Maybe he’ll have an idea what to do.”
She nodded and numbly got to her feet, following him outside so they could apparate. He brought them to the edge of Hogsmeade and they walked in silence to the end of the lane where the crooked little house sat, their sanctuary for a time. Ferdinand was waiting there, just as they suspected. Lavender was lying on the bed, her eyes sad as she silently watched them file in. She was still human and they thought it might be due to the fact that their situation was still grim. Ferdinand took the bundle from Hermione and helped her and Draco to sit beside Lavender on the bed.
“My child,” Ferdinand said sadly as he unwrapped the bundle. “What on earth did they hit you with?”
“The killing curse,” Draco said hoarsely. “It was meant for me.”
Ferdinand smiled sadly. “That’s my child. A hero until the end.”
Ferdinand gently lifted Snape’s furry body and placed him on the rug on the floor. He frowned and began rubbing the soft fur of the little bat’s chest, fingering the wings. He felt his feet and then rubbed a finger over the tiny ears.
“He doesn’t feel gone from me.”
“What do you mean?” Hermione asked sadly.
Ferdinand sighed in frustration. “I have a connection to all of my children, deep in my blood. They hum. I’ve been most unfortunate to lose two children. Each left me with a deep resounding sadness, an absence of humming. It was… like a hole. I don’t feel that. I haven’t all this time. But he doesn’t feel alive either. Almost… no. It couldn’t be.”
“What?” Draco asked, stumbling onto the floor and crawling across.
“You’ve heard stories of Dracula, stored for centuries and awoken with blood.”
“Hibernation?” Hermione asked incredulously. “That’s a myth.”
“I had thought so,” Ferdinand said quietly. “But… now I’m not so sure.”
“If it were,” Draco said cautiously. “How would we wake him?”
“Your blood,” Ferdinand said. “But it will be difficult. In this state, he can’t bear his fangs. We’d have to cut you and force it down his throat and onto his teeth. And there is no guarantee that it would work.”
“I’ll try anything,” Draco breathed, producing a small dagger from his boot. “Anything.”
Hermione held her breath as Draco sliced his palm and held it over the bat’s tiny mouth. She could have sworn it flinched at the drops of blood, but remained still. Just wishful thinking. Draco let out a shaky breath and shook his head. His hand had quit bleeding. She took the knife and sliced her hand as well. She couldn’t leave it. Not yet. Not until they’d tried everything. The blood dribbled onto tiny teeth, that seemed to clench as blood hit it. No. It couldn’t be. Desperation and despair was getting the better of her, not to mention sheer exhaustion and malnutrition. They collapsed in a heap together on the floor, too devastated to do more.
“Not so fast,” Ferdinand called before they gave way to tears.
They looked over to see the bat twitching. Suddenly, the bat dissolved into a large black cloak.
“Ow.”
“MASTER!”
Both teens tackled the newly awake vampire, too glad to care about what had just transpired.
“Easy,” Snape drawled. “Easy.”
“Sorry,” the breathed, scooting back across the room.
Snape scoffed. “Well, I didn’t give you permission to leave. Just… be gentle.”
They crawled over to him and fell in his lap, crying tears of relief and happiness. That was too close. Much too close.
“Indeed,” Snape said quietly as he stroked each of their heads. “Too close indeed. How long have I been out?”
“Three weeks,” Hermione said, hiccupping as she cried.
“My, my,” Snape said in disbelief. “Whatever happened?”
“It seems as though not all of Dracula’s tales were fanciful,” Ferdinand said. “Your pets tell me you were hit with a magical killing curse. And yet while you were already dead, you were not of this world… and not gone from it.”
Snape nodded, his eyes far away. “I feel as though I was wondering through the dark, like dreaming, only I can no longer sleep. I would liken it to perhaps being paralyzed, aware you were alive but unable to interact with the world. Tell me, how did I survive?”
Ferdinand chuckled. “Your pets. You see, young Hermione immediately wrapped you in her robe when you’d been hit, thinking both you and young Draco had been taken from her in one go. And she hasn’t let you go since. You see, you’ve been well protected… just like Dracula. And their blood brought you around again. I must say, you gave us all a fright.”
Snape frowned and ran his hands through his pets’ hair. “How strange. Not that I want to tempt fate again, but I do wonder how it works. Perhaps I really do not have a soul.”
Hermione sat up, her eyes fierce. “You tried to give your life to save Draco’s. Don’t tell me you don’t have a soul, Master.”
Snape smiled and brushed the tears from her eyes. “Ever the Gryffindor, ready to fight until the end.”
She huffed and then snuggled back into him. “Please don’t do that again, Master. I couldn’t bear to lose you a second time. I… I love you… both of you… so much.”
Snape hummed and pulled her into his lap, dragging Draco as close to them as he could. “I love you both too.”
Draco laughed. “I love you both too. What are we, a bunch of Hufflepuffs?”
“Today we are,” Snape said quietly. “But we may not be tomorrow. What happened to Lucius?”
“Hermione killed him,” Draco said with pride. “Sliced him to ribbons with your spell. Aurors couldn’t save him, but it was self-defense, so what do you do?”
Snape smiled. “Indeed. I think our Hermione might have a bit of Slytherin in her yet. What have you two been up to since I’ve been… otherwise indisposed?”
“We set up shop,” Draco answered quietly. “We were looking into one last trip before we officially opened… just in case.”
“W-we thought you would want that,” Hermione said quietly.
Snape smiled and pulled them both closer. “Very much so. I am so proud. Tell me, how much have you imbibed since I have been gone?”
Draco pulled back with steel in his eyes. “Not a drop.”
Snape quirked a brow. “Is that so?”
Hermione nodded, ducking her head so she wouldn’t have to look at anyone. “We didn’t want to dull the pain… not this time.”
Snape nodded and pulled her up for a chaste kiss before bestowing Draco with the same. “I can’t say that I’m not surprised, given your pasts. But I believe that this small victory calls for a well-deserved reward. What do you say we go home?”
“Yes!” they both shouted, jumping up and waiting for his command.
Snape chuckled and stood, albeit wobbly. He sighed. “I’ll need to feed much more than normal… more than you two have.”
“You can take it all,” Hermione breathed and then cringed when he glared at her. “And we can catch someone for you if you like.”
Snape grunted and nodded. “Hunting first. I dare not risk hurting you two when the bloodlust overtakes me.”
“Here,” Ferdinand said, slipping a piece of paper into Snape’s hand. “This address is a place where many muggles congregate in hopes of becoming a meal. Treat them well. I plan on taking Lavender there after she turns.”
“Which is?” Draco asked.
Ferdinand grinned. “Now that you two are settled, I shall turn her straight away.”
“Good,” Hermione said, looking over to a still silent Lavender. “She deserves to get everything she wants. Treat her like a queen.”
“Never less,” Ferdinand said with a nod. “Go on. Get reacquainted."
AN: Okay, I couldn't leave you guys hanging. You know me too well. I can never kill my Snape off very well. This chapter was waaaay more sappy than I was expecting, but hey, sometimes you got to get a little sugar to coat those lemons up, am I right? Anyway, thank you to everyone who reviewed. Keep them coming and let me know how I'm doing. Only one or two more chapters after this. And then I can start working on Three Conditions. Trying to switch back and forth is about to do my head in, so I decided to finish one at a time. Until next time... love you guys!
