No One Comes When You Cry
Chapter 57
“Oh Poppy, thank goodness you’re here. I couldn’t get the poor girl upstairs to a bedroom she was in so much pain, and she wants to push. I’ve been trying to get her to relax but she won’t.”
Severus saw his wife on the drawing room sofa, tears coursing down her cheeks as she gripped her swollen stomach as far as she could reach. Her knees were drawn up either side of her belly, her face as white as a Hogwarts ghost and she was panting. When she stopped panting and screamed again he jumped on the spot. Her face had turned purple and she looked as though she were straining to pass something far too big for her.
So Severus himself took on the ghostly whiteness for her while gripping tightly to the doorframe.
“Severus for goodness sake, get over here and hold her hand instead of standing there looking as if you were the one giving birth.” Poppy snapped at him.
‘Giving birth. Oh shit. Oh shit.‘ He thought. Severus rushed to the back of the sofa and took one of Sky’s hands in his own. He immediately wished he had not when he felt his fingers crack with the force of her grip as she let out another scream.
“Sky, as soon as this contraction ends, I want you to take this.” Poppy held a small phial of blue liquid to Sky’s lips. “Then I will ask Molly to transfigure the sofa into a bed to make it easier for me to examine you.”
Sky started panting again and Poppy tipped the phial so Sky could drink.
Sky drank the foul tasting liquid even though she didn’t want to. She hurt, hurt so much she wanted to die. In fact she thought she was dying. Nothing she’d ever experienced in her life had ever been as painful as this. It was like she was being ripped in two from the inside and there was nothing she could do to stop it. She clung to her wand but it did nothing, just glowed a soft lilac colour along with the stone at her neck. Then another pain began, her stomach tightening impossibly and she wanted to shit so bad.
“Toilet.” She said. “Need toilet, please.”
Molly had transfigured the sofa and Severus was wincing as his wife crushed his fingers some more. ‘The toilet? She wants the bloody toilet?’ He thought bemused.
“No you don’t Sky, that is the first of the babies wanting to come out.” Poppy told her calmly as she tried to get her to drink another of the blue phials. “Drink this one and the pain will ease a little. Then when the next contraction starts I want you to bare down. Push into your bottom as you would when if you were going to the toilet.”
When Sky gave her a scowl the medi-witch smiled. “Yes dear, just like you would of you needed to pass a very large pooh.” She said.
Severus lifted his horror stricken face to the nurse. “Surely you do not expect my wife to … “
“Of course not Severus. It is … Oh here we go.”
Molly stood at the head of the bed, helping Sky to a sitting position while Poppy conjured stirrups and hooked Sky’s legs into them before sitting on a low stool at the bottom of the bed.
Severus looked on painfully, and appalled as his wife was fastened into what looked to him like a torture contraption, a look of bliss momentarily coming over her face as the potions took effect, then scrunching up as she let out an almighty howl as she pushed with all her might.
Tonks stood with a stack of towels, not knowing what else to do and watched in awe from the doorway as a small black ball appeared between Sky’s legs. The ball was followed by something pinky white and stayed there for a minute. Then Sky was hollering again and Poppy took hold of the head, easing it round in such a fashion that Tonks thought she was going to wring the poor things neck. But then a shoulder appeared, quickly followed by another and the next she knew Poppy was holding a tiny baby in her hands.
“Tonks. Get over here now. You too Remus.” Poppy snapped as Remus appeared in the doorway behind Tonks.
Tonks hurried over to the bed and Molly suggested she sit down as Poppy handed her the tiny bundle.
Severus’ head snapped up as the bundle began to squall, but his attention was soon back on his wife as she crushed his fingers again and pushed, howling louder than even Remus had ever managed in his werewolf form. Five minutes Later Remus was on the floor beside Tonks holding and equally small and squalling bundle.
Again Severus had barely a moment to glimpse enviously at the couple holding two of his sons when Sky started crying out again.
Her cries were weaker now and hoarse, she was exhausted and did not have the energy to push any more.
“Can’t. No more. Hurts. Tired.” She rasped brokenly.
Severus was really worried now. It had been a long time since Sky’s speech was stuttered like this other than when he made love to her.
Poppy reached into her bag and removed a phial of clear liquid this time. She passed it to Molly who carefully tipped it into Sky’s mouth.
“This will help with the contractions dear, this baby is breech and you are too exhausted to push any more. Severus, I need you to take Molly’s place so she can press on the uterus as I try and manoeuvre the baby.”
Severus turned whiter than white, but did as instructed while Sky still held weakly onto his hand. He did not even notice the hand that now rested comfortingly on his shoulder as Albus joined them to witness the final birth.
Unable to turn the baby, Sky eventually delivered the final one feet first.
Severus almost fainted when Molly started to press on Sky’s stomach again and something else started emerging down there, but Poppy smirked and told him it was nothing to worry about as it was only the ‘thingy’ that needed to come away.
Severus could not even manage a frown as the two witches cleaned up his wife, who was now blissfully asleep.
Albus handed him the first of his sons, which was actually the last to be born.
Severus took the tiny bundle in his long fingered hands and stared at it in awe as he moved to sit down in the nearest armchair.
Once sat, Remus and Tonks passed him the second and third bundles and he stared mesmerized at his sons. Unable to stop, and uncaring of who saw, the tears rolled down his cheeks. The feelings of love and contentment, the desire to protect and care for these infants was so strong he almost choked with emotion. He lifted his eyes to see his beautiful, wonderful wife sleeping peacefully, and he was never more grateful to anyone than he was at that moment.
“Congratulations Severus.” Albus said, gently stroking one of the babies heads with a finger.
“I have to admit, I’ve never witnessed anything as frighteningly wonderful as that before. Congratulations Severus.” Remus said, his own voice choked.
“That was so cool Severus. Your wife is somethin else.” Tonks added with a grin.
“Severus, we cannot move Sky and the babies until tomorrow. I shall have an elf bring the cribs here for the night and any equipment you might need, nappies, clothes and such like. I take it you are staying here too.”
“What? Oh yes. Yes I am.” He answered distractedly, unable to tear his gaze away from the three little faces in his arms.
With an hour, the furniture in the room was moved against the window wall and a double bed brought down from upstairs. Three small, white wicker cribs stood side by side near the bed and large piles of nappies, clothes and cleaning materials for the babies stood on a table against the door. Next to it was a changing unit, wide enough to lay the babies side by side if necessary and Effy was excitedly buzzing around, fussing over the babies and weeping every so often, twittering about how happy she was to finally be looking after babies again and how she was the proudest nanny elf in all of wizarding Britain.
When Sky awoke several hours later, Severus was laid beside her, out for the count and snoring softly.
Effy thanked Sky for producing such beautiful babies, then proceeded to teach Sky how to breastfeed them.
Starting off with two while Effy fed the third on a bottle, the little elf explained it would be best to rotate the feeding between the babies, each of them taking a turn at the bottle until she was producing enough milk for them all.
Sky was enthralled with the babies, unable to believe that these were what she’d been growing inside of her all this time.
Poppy had left a supply of potions for Sky to take at regular intervals to help with the healing and any pain she might have.
Effy made sure Sky took them at the correct times and Molly also appeared regularly to coo over the babies and bring Sky something to eat and drink.
Severus woke in the early hours to see two of his sons contentedly suckling at his wife’s breasts, while Effy sat on the bottom of the bed bottle feeding the third.
“Does Sir want to feed his son?”
“Indeed I do.” Severus said softly, accepting the child into his arms and allowing Effy to show him the correct way to hold the bottle. She explained the rotation system Sky was using for the feeds until her milk supply increased, and Severus looked at Sky adoringly as she sat propped up on a pile of pillows, her eyes half closed as the babies fed.
Sky was so tired and the babies so demanding, it was decided they stay at Headquarters for the rest of the week so Molly could help out.
It seemed to Severus that every Order member he’d ever seen, and a few he hadn’t, turned up to see the infants and congratulate the couple.
Severus started to get angry when people just walked into the room without knocking and his wife was in the process of feeding the babies. No matter how natural the act, he did not want anyone but him seeing his wife’s breasts.
Molly placed a ‘private, please knock’ sign on the door, and Severus added wards that gave a nasty shock to anyone that had the nerve to ignore the sign and try to walk in uninvited.
Back at Hogwarts, Albus, Minerva and Filius were busy extending the Potion Masters living accommodations to make room for the new additions. A large nursery, complete with cots, beds, chests of drawers, toys, mobiles and anything a child could ever need was provided.
The wood panelling on the lower walls was painted in a soft baby blue, while the upper walls were a delicate shade of lemon with a variety of baby ducks, teddy bears and phoenix’s moving slowly around the walls while moons and stars drifted lazily across the ceiling.
In Severus’ study stood a stack of cards and gifts from students, staff and well wishers to the couple, each one carefully checked for dark magic by the Headmaster, for fear the Dark Lord had heard of the births and decided to have one or more of his followers send something unsavoury that might harm the couple or their sons.
On the third day after the triplets were born, Severus was at his wits end.
Sky cried and cried. She told him she was upset but didn’t know why. He only had to look at her or say he loved her and she would cry, long racking heartbroken sobs and he was at a loss as to what was wrong with her.
Sky couldn’t tell him what was wrong, she didn’t know herself.
When Poppy arrived to give Sky and the babies their daily check-up, Severus took the medi-witch to one side and told her what was happening.
“Severus don’t worry about it, it’s perfectly normal.”
Severus looked at her appalled. “Normal? Poppy there is nothing normal about crying constantly, especially when she will not tell me what is upsetting her so much. Everything I do seems to send her into floods of tears.”
“It’s hormones Severus. Her milk is coming in and it causes a surge of hormones that tends to make the new mother extremely emotional for no good reason. For the last three days Sky has been producing colostrum to nourish the babies, now her breasts are producing milk, she will be uncomfortable for a while as they swell, but it will settle down and the tears will most likely come to an end by this evening. Just continue to support her and help her all you can. Now, let me go and see those lovely babies and check on Sky.”
Poppy smiled as she left a bemused Severus to go and wallow in the kitchen with a sympathetic Remus and a highly amused Kingsley.
“Have you thought of any names for the little ones yet?” Kingsley asked.
Severus lifted his head from the cup of steaming coffee and buttered scone Molly put in front of him moments before. “Names? Err, no not yet. They are one, two and three at the moment.”
“Severus Snape, you cannot give your children numbers. They must have proper names. You only have seven days from the birth in which to do the naming ceremony, otherwise the poor wee things will spend their lives with numbers instead of names. That will never do.” Molly told him sternly as she loomed over him with her hands on her hips.
Severus’ eyebrows almost hit the ceiling when he looked at her, while Kingsley and Remus laughed openly at his consternation.
“Yes well, my wife is somewhat out of sorts at the moment. When she is feeling more like herself, we shall discuss names.” He said.
“Out of sorts, why, what is wrong with her?” Remus asked worriedly.
“It will be her milk coming through I assume.” Molly said knowledgeably.
Severus sighed, wondering what other mysteries of parenthood were still to be revealed to him.
Remus and Kingsley appeared curious, but when Kingsley opened his mouth to ask, Severus frowned at him and he snapped it shut again.
Luckily by that evening, Sky was mostly over her fits of weeping, though she was worn out. Her normally bright eyes were dull with exhaustion, dark shadows underneath them as she seemed to constantly be nursing the babies.
“How long do I have to do this Severus. It hurts, I’m sure they’ve got teeth.” She complained, removing one of the infants from an engorged and painfully red nipple.
“According to Poppy and Molly, it will get easier as time passes. Molly said it is usual to continue to breastfeed until the children are at least two years of age.”
“Two years? But that’s forever, and it’s so tiring Severus. I feel like it never ends.”
“Poppy has left some salve to rub onto the affected areas, it should ease your discomfort and make it less painful to feed them.” He took the jar of salve from the table and scooped up a small dollop with his fingers. When Sky opened her blouse and he saw he now enormous globes he gulped, his trousers tented uncomfortably as he gently massaged the salve into her nipples and the surrounding area. “Gods, I hope you will be able to do this yourself from now on.” He croaked, looking pointedly down at his groin. “I am finding it far too stimulating.”
Sky huffed. “Well you can forget that for the rest of our lives. No way am I going through this again.” She grumbled.
Severus looked crestfallen for a moment, then he smiled slyly. “Poppy said you will be fine by the weekend, magical healing is much superior to the muggle way.”
“I don’t care, I don’t intend to keep having babies every time we have sex.”
He sighed and smiled at her. “Sky, we can have a love life without producing children every time. A simple contraceptive potion will prevent conception until we are ready to add to our little family. And believe me I am in no rush to complete it just yet. Effy will be teaching you how to extract any excess milk fairly soon, it will be stored and she will be able to take over some of the night time feeds so you can rest more. It will also mean we can have more personal time together. I know you Sky, it will not be long before you are as hungry for me as I am for you.” He said with a smirk.
The smirk fell when Sky hit him in the face with a soaked breast pad, causing him to splutter when it stuck to his nose and cheek. He gingerly peeled it away, shooting her a disgusted glare and dropped it into the bin. “You will regret doing that.” He growled, already planning how he would take his revenge when Sky was well enough to indulge him in the bedroom again.
Sky smiled inwardly as she retorted. “You know, that man Kingsley has been teaching me how to tie different kinds of magical knots. I wonder if they work on anything other than magical ropes.”
Severus winced slightly and turned his back on her, one hand protectively over his groin. “Do not even go there wife.” He said, bending to pick up number two son who was grizzling in his crib. “I think it is time we discussed names for these little fellows. We cannot keep calling them one, two and three. Any suggestions?” He asked, hoping to take her mind off knotting his manhood.
“I don’t know many names Severus, what about Salazar? And Steven’s a nice name, do you have any idea’s?”
“Steven, after your you suitor I assume?” He said with a scowl.
“Well he did ask me to marry me after all.” She teased. “I just like the name, Severus if you don’t like the name that’s fine.”
“Actually I do, though I am not too keen on the name Salazar, if the boy is placed in any house other than Slytherin, it will make things difficult for him.”
Sky’s face went dark and serious. “Severus, whatever we call them, not one of these children will ever have that scabby old hat put on their head. Not ever. I’ll set fire to the damned thing first.”
