The Trouble with Faeries
Harry was at his wits end with his Faeries. He loved them, that was clear enough to everyone, but damn, sometimes they drove him around the bend. Leolin was so close to becoming an adult, so close to being as safe as they could make him as his immune system finally matured. Two months more, that was all they needed until Leolin reached his eighteenth birthday. Now if only his twins would calm themselves and stop throwing fits.
“Kallan, sweetie, please.” Harry groaned, as he cradled the five year old in his arms, up against his left shoulder, trying to keep him away from his identical twin brother, Cyneric, who was on his other shoulder. They were both trying to attack one another, for his sole attention, because they didn’t want to share him, especially not with one another.
“Ma!” Cyneric cried.
“Cyneric, it’s okay, look, we’re outside.” Harry tried, freezing his balls off in the late October evening, just to try and calm his babies down.
Cyneric screamed harder, and shoved a hand in Harry’s face, his little fingers curled up, his nails digging in and clawing.
“Cyneric!” Harry chastised, reaching up to pull the little hand away from his face, where his son was trying to gouge out his eyeball. They always went for his eyes.
“Ma!” Kallan cried out.
“Alright, you two need some separation.” Harry sighed, putting Kallan down in one pile of leaves, and then putting Cyneric down in another. They cried harder, tugging on Harry’s last heartstring, but he had learnt with Leolin that he couldn’t pick them up.
Why in the hell did he and Nasta have to go and have Faerie twins? Leolin had been a handful on his own, and he hadn’t yet reached adulthood. There was still two months where everything could go horribly wrong, and it terrified him.
Harry wasn’t sleeping properly, he couldn’t help but sneak into Leolin’s room at least twice a night to check his temperature, to make sure his cheeks were still pale, that he didn’t have a cough or a sniffle. He felt terrible invading his son’s privacy, but Leolin, who nearly always woke up during Harry’s night time visits, would just smile up at him, clamour for a hug and a kiss, before falling back to sleep. Harry would stay for a little longer, running his fingers through Leolin’s thick, black hair, before he’d take himself back to bed, to lie awake for a few more hours, before repeating the entire process. He was lucky if he got two hours a night now, especially with six, one year olds to run around after during the day. Why had he gone and had sextuplets? Did he not have enough stress?
“Harry, how are they doing?” Max called from the back porch.
“Calming down, they need a few more minutes.” Harry replied, watching his twins grin and giggle at the leaves they were laying in.
“I’ve got hot chocolate waiting, so don’t be too long. You must be freezing by now.”
Harry snorted to himself, trying to rub the blood back into his arms. He couldn’t stay out here all night, and neither could his vulnerable Faeries. He judged them to be calm enough, and he scooped them out of their pile of leaves and carried them back to the house.
Their little moment in nature had calmed them down, and they both snuggled into his neck, biting at him gently, digging in little nails as if they couldn’t get close enough to him, but Harry was very used to this by now, Leolin had been exactly the same.
“There you are, we thought you’d frozen solid out there.” Draco teased him.
Harry shook his whole body. “You’re not that far from the truth, love.” Harry muttered.
“Give them here.” Nasta said softly, picking up Cyneric, and then Kallan. The twins were very sleepy now, and didn’t realise the change, they just snuggled into Nasta’s neck instead. “You warm up, Caru.”
Harry nodded and went to grab the hot chocolate that Max had made him.
“I’ll warm you up.” Max told him, placing big hands on Harry’s arms and rubbing vigorously.
Harry giggled and squirmed in Max’s hold, but he was warming up. Max stopped rubbing him ,so Harry could take a gulp of chocolate, but his biggest mate always went too far, so Harry wasn’t surprised when Max started laying kisses over his neck, soothing the bites that Cyneric and Kallan had left there.
“Ma!”
Harry smiled and turned just in time to almost be bowled over by Leolin. Max kept a hand on his back to keep him on his feet, and he ruffled Leolin’s hair before taking Harry’s mug over to the sink.
“I missed you.” Leolin told him.
“I was just outside with your brothers. Remember that you sometimes need a moment in nature? Cyneric and Kallan needed one too.”
“I could have come.” Leolin pouted.
“It’s very cold outside right now.” Harry said, worried for Leolin, and he automatically lifted a hand to press it against Leolin’s forehead.
Leolin gave him a grin, and bent forward to nuzzle into Harry’s neck. Harry flinched, and sighed, when he felt a small nip to the skin.
“Leolin, remember that I told you to stop biting me?”
“Sorry.” Leolin said, but he wasn’t sorry at all, and he would do it again.
Harry cuddled him tightly, even though Leolin was getting bigger. He was the equivalent of fifteen years old now, and coming on so well.
“Do you want to come for a cuddle in the room?” Harry asked him.
Leolin’s gold eyes lit up, and his grin widened. “Yes! Yes, Ma!”
“Come on then.”
Harry allowed himself to be pulled into the living room by an excited Leolin, but he chose where they sat, right next to Blaise.
“Are the twins feeling any better?”
Harry hummed, even as Leolin draped himself over his lap and snuggled in. “They’re doing much better. Nasta took them up to bed.”
“Mum! Pay attention to me!” Leolin whined.
Harry smiled and started running his fingers through Leolin’s hair, down his neck and then his arms. His Faerie baby smiled and snuggled in to Harry’s stomach.
Harry looked over to Blaise, and they shared a grin, very used to the demanding Faeries, who coveted Harry’s sole attention.
“Harry, those twins want you.” Nasta told him, looking harried and stressed, as he scrubbed a hand through his greying hair.
“No!” Leolin cried out, clutching around Harry’s middle. “My turn! My turn!” He insisted.
“I’ll be fifteen minutes, sweetie.” Harry told him. “Go to Daddy Nasta.”
“No!” Leolin screamed. “Ma, stay with me!”
“If you let me go, we can have longer tonight.” Harry told him.
Leolin frowned, considering that, but his grip eased.
“Come on, to Daddy Nasta.”
“Da.” Leolin sniffled.
Nasta quickly took Harry’s place, and got a rare cuddle from Leolin. Harry raced up the stairs, to where he heard his twins throwing yet another fit.
“Boys, boys!” He called out as he entered their nursery.
“Ma!” They cried out together.
Harry picked up Kallan, taking him over to Cyneric’s bed and picking up his other little Faerie boy. The last thing he needed was for their tantrum to wake up any of the sextuplets next door.
“Ma, stay.”
“I’m here. I’m staying.” He promised. “How about a story?”
“Sto-e!”
Harry grabbed one of the books on the little bookshelf between both beds, and he made himself comfortable, a twin on either side of himself, mostly to keep them away from one another so that they didn’t start hitting one another again.
Harry kept his voice light, and almost devoid of emotion. The Faeries didn’t like him putting on fun voices like his other babies did, they wanted his voice. Just his voice. So that is what Harry gave them.
He read them two stories, and Cyneric drifted off first, and then Kallan. He moved Kallan to his own bed, and he tucked them in, smiling at them softly. They might be such trouble, and a real pain as they fussed and threw fits over him, but he loved them, they were still his babies, and he would die for them if he needed to. He gave them each a kiss, before carefully leaving the room. It was time to deal with Leolin, who would not be happy that Harry had taken twenty minutes, and not fifteen as he’d promised.
“Is Mum coming back?” Harry heard Leolin ask, sounding so sad and dejected that Harry’s heart clenched tight.
“Of course he is, sweetheart.” Nasta assured their Faerie baby. “As soon as your brothers are settled, he’ll be right back.”
“I don’t like him being with them!” Leolin growled.
“You have to share your mother, Leolin.”
“I don’t want to!”
Harry sighed, well aware of Leolin’s possessive tendencies. He’d first seen it when he’d had Taren, and Leolin would try to reach out to his baby brother and attack him just because Harry was holding them both.
“We’ve been through this before, Leolin. You’re getting older.” Nasta told him. “You’ll be an adult soon, and Cyneric and Kallan still need your mother. All of your little brothers and sisters still need him.”
“I want him!” Leolin screamed.
“Hey, hey. I go for twenty minutes and come back to this?!” Harry said, trying to keep a bit of brightness to his voice. “What happened, big boy?”
“Want you.” Leolin insisted, burying himself in Harry’s chest. “Missed you.”
“Come on.” Harry sighed, sitting back down and allowing Leolin to try and meld them into one person.
Harry stroked his back, trying to calm his oldest Faerie son down from the edge of his tantrum. Almost eighteen or not, the equivalent of a fifteen year old or not, Leolin was still a Faerie. He was always going to be a Faerie, and there was no changing that. He might keep having these tantrums well into his twenties, until his real age and equivalent age evened out a little, which would be around the age of twenty-three, and even then Leolin might remain emotional and temperamental, that was the way with Faeries. Eitri had told him that he hadn’t ‘levelled-out’ until his thirties.
“I made you tea, Harry.” Max whispered, setting the cup down on the coffee table in front of him, giving a pointed look to Leolin snuggled in his lap.
“He’ll be asleep soon.” Harry murmured, rubbing Leolin’s back rhythmically, trying to get him to sleep.
“Not tired.” Leolin grumbled.
“You’re going through a growth spurt, sweetie.” Harry corrected. “You know you sleep more when you’re going through one of those.”
“No.”
Harry just chuckled at the sleepy denial, and continued to rub Leolin’s back, head, and arms.
“Is he asleep?” Nasta asked him ten minutes later.
Harry checked critically, slowly stopping all movement of his hands, and he smiled as Leolin remained still and silent.
“Yeah, he’s asleep.”
“I’ll carry him up now.” Nasta said, as he carefully, and gently, eased Leolin into his own arms from Harry’s lap, and stood up with him, carrying him up to his own room.
Harry sat back with a happy sigh, and he knocked his tea back in several large swallows.
“Happy?” Max asked him.
“Yeah, for now. Those boys have gone mad in the last month.”
“All three of them are going through a growth spurt.” Draco sighed. “All at the same time.”
Harry shook his head. “That really doesn’t help. Now that Leolin is almost an adult, so close to having an impenetrable immune system, I can’t rest. I’d never forgive myself if we dropped the ball now that he’s so close to that metaphorical finish line.”
“We’re not going to, Bello.” Blaise insisted. “Not with him, or our twins. All three of them are going to reach adulthood. Then all we have to worry about is them being beheaded in the Faerie city.”
Harry moaned and threw himself backwards, burying himself in a cushion.
“Did you have to say that?” Draco demanded.
“As if we weren’t all thinking it.” Blaise defended. “What with that spate of beheadings there in recent months, it’s not as if we could forget, or just ignore that it’s happening.”
“Leolin won’t be going there until he’s an adult. The Faerie court believe they’ve caught the one responsible.” Harry insisted. “Warren will keep Leolin safe there regardless.”
“Enough gloomy talk, we have a birthday party to plan. Macie and Evie turn thirteen in three weeks, and before that we have to survive Halloween.”
Harry groaned harder and put the cushion over his face.
“No smothering yourself, we made a rule against it ten years ago!” Max teased him.
Harry chuckled and popped his head out from under his cushion.
“I claim ignorance.” He joked.
“No, don’t you dare!”
Harry and Max started wrestling for the cushion, and when he walked in, Nasta just lifted an eyebrow, before he sighed.
“I won’t ask.” He said, coming to sit down.
“Is Leolin okay?”
“Still fast asleep, and not running any fevers.”
Harry breathed out a sigh of relief, and settled.
“We’re not going to drop the ball.” Max told him. “But he’s going to be just fine.”
Harry nodded, but his Dracken side refused to let him believe it. Leolin was just two months from an impenetrable immune system, and Harry would be damned if any of his little Faerie babies became sick now. It didn’t help that it was heading to winter, the time that most of his kids started ferrying around cold and flu viruses. He had to be vigilant, and decisive. The moment one of his babies got sick, he would have to ship Leolin, Cyneric, and Kallan, off to their Faerie friends for protection. The kids would hate it. He knew from past experience that they’d hate it, but they would be safe, and that’s all Harry wanted. For his little Faeries to survive to adulthood, and he would be fucking damned if he lost any of his babies now. He would get them to adulthood, because the alternative was unacceptable.
