Chapter 56
Beta'd by Tenchi (love you, woman!)
Flopping down on the end of the bed after coming in, Harry sighed. He was tired and fully planned to get some sleep. Each day the fuzziness did seem to wane, something good, however, he was still feeling stretched thin. That was something he hoped would lessen soon as well. He was also sure, unless it did quickly, that when he resumed what he normally did, that feeling was going to grow worse.
Shutting his eyes and rubbing them, he waited for Snape to come in. This was the plan, so the man could check on him and catch up with anything that needed passed along. He also hoped that Draco had delivered the assignments he needed to work on. That would not only allow him to have something to do so he didn't go completely mental, but at least start on getting caught up so he wasn't so far behind when he did start back to normal classes.Looking up when the there was a firm rap on the door connecting to Snape's end then it opened, Harry nodded when he saw the man step in.Producing a parchment, Snape laid it down on the desk by the door. “Those are your assignments, at least in the classes you share with Mr. Malfoy.”“Good. I can try to get caught up,” Harry sighed. Shaking his head, he imparted, “Tomorrow night—you'll not receive a summons to attend. We discussed it and thought it best for you to stay here. If you leave, Dumbledore might use the opportunity to come down and pull something. With as fuzzy as I am still, it's not wise that I deal with him yet. I'm sure I can hold my own, but you never know what he's going to pull right now. We don't think it’s a good idea to chance that.”Thinking that over, Severus then gave a slow nod. Though he would like to witness the retribution for the rat, something that was a long time in the making, he understood why they decided this. Potter was probably right; the second he was out of the castle, the old man would probably try something as Potter was most assuredly not up to his best. And if Albus came down and got one whiff of how fuzzy Potter was, he would push. No, it was best he stay. “Understood,” he said with a nod. “Anything else?”“No, that's all. I'll fill you in if we need you for something,” Harry said with a sigh, reaching up to rub his eyes.Producing the potions the young man needed, Severus sat them beside the parchment. “Those are the pain killers you requested. If you require a different kind as the pain lessens, let me know. I would suggest that you not take these more than you need them. Not only are they addictive, but won't help with the 'fuzziness', as you put it.”“Trust me, I don't plan to take anything any longer than I have to,” Harry said with a shake of his head.“If there is nothing else--” Snape sneered, trailing off.“I'm good. I plan to get some sleep,” Harry sighed, slumping slightly.Taking that for what it was, Snape nodded then left, shutting the door firmly behind him.Getting up, Harry grabbed the parchment and potions then hid them by the bed. Snagging his pajamas, he went to change. Sleep was needed and he fully planned to get it.
Sitting in his office, Albus rubbed his eyes with his trembling good hand. He was tired, no doubt there, as he always was by now, but sleep was something he was going to put off as long as he could. Poppy just left his office after checking him over and the news wasn't good. With all the magic he was burning through, the curse was progressing faster than they planned expected. Rather than late spring as the time he was looking at, it sounded like he was going to be lucky to make it much beyond the first of the year. That was bad, really bad. With what was going on, that wasn't acceptable and left him feeling panicked.
There was so much to set in motion yet and so many things he had to handle that the timeline he had just been handed wasn't nearly enough. Harry needed pushed in the right direction, he needed someone to take on the mantle of the Light Lord, someone to run the order, Tom and Harry to meet, work that needed done in the Ministry to get the right people in place, and so much else that just a few scant months wasn't nearly enough. Which meant he had to step up something here to at least get the bare bones in place.Thinking it over, he realized the most pressing problems were Harry and the Light Lord. And both were equally as troublesome. Harry—what he was doing there just wasn't working. That Nick fellow, whoever he was, was an influence on the young man that wasn't helping. He blamed Nick for so much of this and the independent streak that Harry was showing. However, he didn't know how to get the man out of Harry's life either. Though the tainted chocolates were something most would use, he knew it wouldn't work. Harry trusted the man enough that just his word would be taken that he didn't send them. Plus, most in the castle now knew that Nick probably wasn't the one to send them so Harry would catch on to that. That was a failure on his end, one he shouldn't have let get out. And a missed opportunity. Now he had to find something else to work with Harry, but he didn't know what it might be either.Sighing, he let his head drop forward and shut his eyes. The other matter, the Light Lord, was something that looked like it would fail. He was out of candidates to push for that. There was just no one left that could take it on, well, any that would follow what he had set in motion. That meant Tom was going to have a big advantage here, one he didn't need. And he had no way to counter it. All he could do was put other things in motion and hope they were enough to throw a spanner into anything Tom devised. He wasn't counting on that, though. To his thinking, this meant that he had to now push other areas. If Rufus was thinking about retiring, he needed to put someone in place that could actually help their cause, someone like Kingsley. Then he needed someone in the Order he could trust absolutely to carry on with what plans he had. Which meant he had to give up everything or leave a big enough trail of breadcrumbs for them to follow. That wasn't easy and he wasn't really sure how to go about that or even who might be the one to lead. Most of the names that came to mind would have issues with some of it, especially where it came to what needed to happen with Harry. The Harry part actually left out most that he knew would follow him blindly on all other areas. He also couldn't think of anyone that could step up here with enough political clout to get anything done.Sighing, he shook his head and smoothed down his beard. Oh, this was a huge mess, one he didn't know how to deal with. Part needed to come, he knew that, but the only other thing he could think was jump up his timeline for Harry and Tom meeting. If he could manage to arrange that over the hols, it might take the most troublesome issue out of the equation.Opening his eyes and lifting his head, he thought that over then nodded. That's what he would do. Oh, he would focus on finding leadership, but he desperately needed the endgame to start now. That meant that Tom and Harry had to meet. He would work with the lad, of course, at least a little, but he needed them tossed together. All that meant was he needed to find the proper motivation to get Harry moving in the right direction.Pondering that, he thought he might have it. It would take some work, as he didn't know where the man was, but he would manage. Yes, this was what he needed. Now he just had to hone it was all.
Standing off in the small chamber beside the ballroom the next night, Harry tugged at his robes, sighing. It was time to handle Wormtail. He was still fuzzy, but it was lessening. Barty was out making sure everyone was directed to the ballroom when they arrived while he waited here with Sirius and Tom. They had this planned out and it shouldn't be hard. There was a Dementor waiting in another room so everyone wasn't affected by its presence yet. Pulled out of his thoughts when Tom said the Evan name, he waited to see what his lover wanted.
“You're up for this, aren't you?” Tom asked, his transformation already in place.“I'm fine,” Harry said with a firm nod. “Don't worry about me.”“It won't take long. I just want it seen by as many as I can manage,” Tom told him firmly. “I don't want anyone thinking they can pull a stunt like this again.”“Just—as you bring him in, you might want to silence him. You never know what he'll come across with when he's desperate. I'm worried about him coming across with Evan's real name here,” Sirius said softly, already wary and uneasy about what he was about to observe. Not having thought of that, Tom nodded, taking it into consideration. “I'll keep a close eye on him. Anything that sounds remotely close, I'll do that.” Looking at the door as Barty came in, he asked, “Is everyone here?”Bowing, Barty said, “All but those we know aren't coming.”Smoothing down his robes, Tom said, “Let's do this then.” Nodding to Evan, he motioned for him to follow then headed to the other room.
Lying in bed with Tom that night after Wormtail was attended to, Harry felt better. No, the fuzziness was still there, but the fact that the rat was taken care of was heartening. He had been Kissed in front of almost every Death Eater out there, something he still saw as poetic justice because of the sentence hanging over Sirius. For now, Wormtail was down in the dungeons. As soon as they could safely turn him over to the Ministry, they would. For now, they couldn't. Too much was riding on keeping some things a secret. He fully and completely planned to make damned sure Sirius was cleared though, so they would do that.
Curling up to Tom, resting his head on his shoulder, Harry gave a contented sigh as the man's magic seemed to entwine with his own. That always felt good and made him feel better. “I'm happy with what we did tonight. I know we set this up for a specific reason, but I rather see it as him paying for so much he's done.”Running his fingers through Harry's hair then giving it a tug, Tom gave an amused snort. “I figured that. He was a liability in many areas, this I knew. For a time, he had his uses. Those are long over. It was just a waiting game until he pulled something that would end this way. Again, that was something I knew. I also was sure that if it kept on, he would do another betrayal of me to the other side if it got too heated for him. He's already proven to me loyalty means nothing. It's my opinion that the only reason he stayed with me was out of fear, nothing more.” Quietly, lowering his voice, he said, “My thought on the matter was it was you that would finally drive him to go to the other side. I don't think he could have put up with having to answer to you, knowing how you felt about him, for long. Let alone the fact that your father was one he betrayed. No, it was coming. This just brought it on sooner than I thought.” Almost as an afterthought, he added, “I'm actually slightly surprised it took as long as it did for him to pull something foolish.”“He was a nightmare, all there is to it,” Harry said, shaking his head slightly. “We're better off without him. We both know there are people we don't need helping us, as they are more of a liability than an asset. He was one of them.” Sighing, he reached up and rubbed his eyes then said, grinning a little, “Now, about this Quidditch match this weekend—do you know anything that can help make damned sure Gryffindor wins? Ron is a complete cluster that's going to screw up, I already know that. I'm not sure who they are going to have take my place. I just hope like hell it's someone competent. I want out of this as I'm going to be so far behind that I'm not sure when I'll catch up again.”Snorting at that and grinning, Tom said, “No, Harry. That one has to play out just as it comes. I see your point, but we can't have any hand in that. There's also the fact you're in quarantine. There's nothing you can do. Just hope the team captain has enough sense to pick a Seeker that can make up for anything Ron might screw up. That's about all you can do.”Grinning, Harry said, “I know, I was hoping you could have Thor Imperius Ron into becoming the world's best Keeper or something to help.” Sighing, he said, “I think, maybe, even if they don't win, I need to drop this. We have so much going that something has to give here. With time running short when it comes to Dumbledore, I need to focus there more than on Quidditch practice and worrying about that end. Let's see what comes here and I'll decide then.” Shaking his head, he added, “I think we need to see if we can't get Snape to poke the man to jar loose some plans when it comes to him. He's getting desperate, we know that. I would like at least a small hint of what he might be doing to prepare.”Thinking that over, Tom gave a slow nod. “That may be a good idea. Let's see what I can manage there with him. Severus is good at getting him to give up at least some of what he's planning. We know so much of it deals with that Prophecy and Hall. I would like some kind of hint what he might be up to, though we can counter it, no matter what it is.” Tone distracted, he added, “Tomorrow we need to get your solicitor to make an appointment to get with you at school once you're back in the dorms. We need that in motion now, Harry. That's imperative. We also need to spend a few hours soon planning out just what we're going to do about Privet Drive so we have a plan in place. We have a few select Death Eaters we want to come, but I need to know who to bring along. That I don't want to decide at the last minute.”“We do,” Harry agreed with a firm nod. “I think we're also going to need to do some scouting ahead of time to make sure it runs smoothly.” Grinning evilly, he chuckled then said, “I think we should include Bella. Let her have at my family a bit. Call it poetic justice.”Grinning at that idea himself, Tom agreed, “Oh, we will. That's just what we need. However, we do need to get with her ahead of time to make certain she knows some facts. Not who you are, of course, just what was said on the night of the first meeting after my 'return'. I'll arrange that this week as well. Then we'll go from there.”Pressing tighter to his lover, Harry said, “I get to set the bloody house on fire. That's mine.”“That's yours,” Tom assured him, giving his hair another tug. “And I'm going to make damned sure you get to throw a few Crucios at them as well.”Smiling at that, Harry nodded. “Revenge is sweet and I can't wait!”“We will both enjoy this,” Tom admitted, leaning down and giving Harry a kiss. “We need sleep,” he sighed after he broke it off. “You still have to heal more and it can only help with what you're dealing with.”“Yeah, true,” Harry sighed. “I wish this fuzziness would go away. It's hard to deal with.” Softly, he added, “I think, somewhere, I'm worried that it won't fully go away. That it gave the brains a slight stir they might never recover from.”“You will,” Tom told him bracingly. Gently, he added, “Even if it doesn't, your place in my life won't ever change. We would just have to adjust slightly, nothing more. Don't worry about it, Harry. I'm sure in the next week or so that you'll be back to normal. Just give it time.”Smiling at that, Harry said, “Yeah, true. It's just hard to deal with now. I'm not used to fighting to do what I normally do is all. That's maddening.” Shutting his eyes, he then added, voice almost a whisper, “Thanks, Tom.”“Nothing to thank me for,” Tom told him firmly. “Even fuzzy, you're still better than 99% of those that follow me. Plus, I love you. That counts more than the other part. Don't worry, Harry.”Smiling, Harry nodded and gave a contented sigh.
