“One more time, from the top,” the Auror ordered.
Draco rubbed the bridge of his nose and sighed. “You’ve heard us say it fifteen times already. My father joined some radical faction hell bent on destroying muggleborns. They challenged us in the street and we blasted them.”
“Wandless,” the Auror pointed out.
“Obviously,” Draco sighed. “What else were we supposed to do? He was about to try and murder my daughter.”
“The killing curse would have done that,” the Auror pointed out.
“And we’re thankful to Professor Snape and his mate that they took the curse for us,” Hermione cut in. “I’m even more relieved to learn that they’re fine, but they were still recovering when Lucius was about to shoot that curse at me.”
“You destroyed half of Hogsmeade,” the Auror growled. “Wandless.”
Draco growled and pounded his fist on the metal table they were sitting behind. “Look. I already said I would pay reparations. Hopefully, Lucius will be stripped of his title of head of house and I’ll have access to the Malfoy vaults, but if not, I still have enough to cover the damages.”
“And support your wife and child?”
Draco frowned. “I plan on getting a job after Hogwarts to support them. I’m not like my father. I want to work to earn my way.”
The Auror hummed. “Surely you’ve heard rumors of what happens to those with wandless magic.”
Draco tensed. Magic crackled in his fingertips as he tried to contain his rage. “You’ll not touch my wife.”
“Not touch,” the Auror agreed as he inched closer toward the door in their little interrogation. “The experimentation is just a tale to discourage those with minimal talents to hone them. In reality, those with real power and talent are recruited.”
“Unspeakables,” Hermione breathed.
The Auror nodded. “We had thought to recruit Potter. His powers are legendary, but it seems we were overlooking someone… two someones in fact.”
Draco shifted and pulled Hermione closer to him in his lap. “She couldn’t possibly join.”
The Auror nodded. “We understand that she is with child. However, we cannot allow her to join anyone else. Her power is too great.”
“The Ministry is corrupt,” Hermione hissed.
“The Ministry is changing,” the Auror corrected. “And for the record, not one Unspeakable was on Voldemort’s side. We went underground when he tried to take over. A good amount of the Order was made up of us.”
“Us?” Hermione questioned. “Aren’t you an Auror?”
The Auror smiled, his purple eyes flashing with mirth. “That’s the point.”
“You pose as regular members of society,” Draco said with understanding.
The Auror nodded. “My partner is a chemistry teacher at a local muggle school where we find muggleborns who have been somehow looked over. Another of our colleagues owns a restaurant in Diagon Alley. The reason the Aurors came so quickly is because one of them works in the very dress shop in Hogsmeade you were in earlier today.”
Draco narrowed his eyes. “Why tell us this?”
“A perk,” the Auror said quietly as he lowered his hood. His thick brown hair tumbled around his face and he quickly swept it back. “You can be whoever you want, so long as you pull double duty.”
“Do we have a choice?” Draco asked quietly.
The Auror shook his head. “Afraid not. If you refuse, the Ministry will see you as a threat and more than likely charge you with something false. You’ll be obliviated, have your magic bound, and be cast out into the muggle world.”
“That’s barbaric!” Hermione yelled, only inches from attacking the man herself. The table scooted a couple of feet away in her anger.
“None of us are very happy about it,” the Auror said quietly. “But we all agree that working for the Unspeakables is much better than being muggles.”
“What is wrong with muggles?” Hermione hissed.
“Nothing,” the Auror said softly. “My wife is a muggle. But I’ve spoken to those who have been bound and cast out. They have no recollection of the magical world, but they always feel like something is missing. They aren’t whole or happy, always searching for meaning in their lives, something to complete them. They miss their magic, though they don’t even have it anymore.”
Hermione couldn’t stop the tears that fell down her cheeks. “That’s awful.”
The Auror nodded grimly. “If you agree to join us, we’ll cover up the fight. The Ministry will suddenly have a containment spell able to do the damage you two caused. You’ll go back to being normal, well, as normal as you two can be. When you graduate, you’ll join us. You’ll receive the training and knowledge you need to succeed as one of us. You’ll be paid handsomely. When your training is complete, you’ll pursue your dreams, make it your cover. You’ll receive missions and you’ll complete them under the guise of a vacation. When not on missions, you’ll keep your ears and eyes open.”
“Sounds time consuming,” Draco said. “What about our daughter?”
The Auror nodded. “Mrs. Malfoy will be spared until two months after the birth of the child. Then she will train. The Ministry will pay for a nanny or child care of your choice. You’ll be home every night, though, so don’t worry about that. You may have as many children as you wish. You can both be spokespeople for mixed blood marriages. You could become the next Ministry of Magic, but you will always be an Unspeakable.”
Draco pondered the words for a while. “Hermione wants to go to University.”
The Auror nodded. “We thought as much. The Unspeakables will pay for it, of course. They appreciate knowledge. They don’t always need warriors.”
Draco nodded, still thinking. “I want to be a Potion Master.”
“You’ll train under Snape?”
“If he’ll have me.”
“Very good,” the Auror said. “Master Snape has been an Unspeakable for decades. We value his potions greatly but even he can’t keep up with our needs. You would be a good addition to the team.”
Draco thought his jaw was going to bounce off the table. “Snape is an Unspeakable?”
The Auror nodded. “He joined right out of school. Though he didn’t want to, his power was too great to overlook. He thought he’d found a patron in Voldemort but when he was punished, it was the Unspeakables that kept him going. We funneled him the money to continue his Masters, take care of his child, and provided protection during the first war for his mate as well.”
“He said no one knew,” Draco breathed.
The Auror grinned. “He never said a word, but we always knew and he knew we knew. He also knew that when Voldemort returned, running was their best bet because we couldn’t protect them and the others we were watching too.”
“But you didn’t help him search afterwards,” Draco said bitterly.
“Wrong,” the Auror sighed. “The night he asked you for your help, we informed him that we had come up empty. Vampire enchantments trump all, apparently.”
“Except blood stones,” Draco sighed.
The Auror nodded. “You would both be valuable members of the team.”
“What about Harry?” Hermione asked quietly. “He won’t take kindly to being threatened… and you can’t just obliviate the savoir of the wizarding world.”
“True,” the Auror allowed. “But how could he turn down the organization that would allow him to become the Auror he wants while working to make the world a better place. Besides, his best friend and his sister will be in the same group.”
“Venus?” Hermione whispered.
The Auror nodded. “Snape is next door recruiting her. He knew he couldn’t keep her from it forever.”
“But she’s going to be a teacher,” Hermione said quietly.
“So was Snape,” the Auror said softly. “I’ll leave you two to think on it.”
AN: So, I finished this story last night. There are only two more chapters and the epilogue to go. I'm sort of sad to see it over and happy because I'll be able to finish Fooling Fate now... I hope anyway. As always, thanks to everyone who reviewed. They make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Keep them coming and let me know how I'm doing. Until next time... Love you guys!
