Chapter 58
Paula and Severus woke an hour later to the sound of hooting.
Paula struggled to loosen herself from his firm grim and went to the door. As soon as she opened it, a brown tawny owl tried to make its way inside, only to find its way blocked by an invisible wall as Paula weaved her hands and stopped its passage.
“Nai. Nai. Chavaia.” She shouted angrily at the owl. “Moxado mi vurdon.” (No. No. Stop. Don’t taint my wagon)
“Paula let the damned thing in, it has a letter.” Severus said, rising from the bed and attempting to reach passed her to get at the owl.
“No. My home will be unclean if it comes inside.”
He rolled his eyes and moved passed her to go outside and remove the missive from the now quite distressed owl.
“There’s a bag of treats hanging from the third step, give it one of those.”
Severus leaned over and saw a leather drawstring pouch. He stuck his hand inside and pulled a disgusted face when he withdrew a squelchy handful of what he could only describe as ‘innards’, from some dead creature. “Ugh! Here.” He threw the mess onto the ground and shook his hand. When he turned to re enter, he couldn’t.
“Wash first, then I will let you back in.”
His jaw dropped in surprise, and then he frowned and dashed to a bowl of cold water that stood near the campfire. “You are a madwoman. It’s bloody freezing out here and in case you hadn’t noticed, I haven’t got any clothes on.” He complained, drying his hands on the towel and dashing back up the steps. He threw the letter on the table, jumped straight into the bed and huddled, shivering, under the covers. “What was that all about?”
“It is bad luck to let animals into the home, especially dogs, cats and birds. They taint, make the dwelling dirty and impure.”
Severus thought it was a load of bollocks but he said nothing, not wishing to offend her. Instead he watched as she dressed then sat down, passing him the letter.
“Tu junava me. (You tell me) You may as well read it to me; you will hear anyway if I use the chit charm.”
Severus propped himself up against the pillows and opened the scroll. His eyes flickered side to side as he skimmed over the page before relating the contents to her.
“So it was you who visited the Longbottom’s. I thought so.”
“What? How do you know? What does it say? Who is it from?”
“This is a letter of gratitude from Mrs Augusta Longbottom. She wishes to relate her heartfelt appreciation for what you did, and to say that her home, and her heart will always be open to you. She goes on to say that, Frank and Alice’s recovery is coming along nicely, though as yet she has been unable to contact her grandson and let him know about his parents recovery. She also asks why you disappeared that day before she had chance to thank you personally and would like the opportunity to do so in the future. Wishing you good health etc, blah de blah… “
“Enough Severus. Thank you.” Paula scowled when he began with the blah’s and took the letter from him. She rolled it and laid it carefully in a drawer where Severus noticed quite a lot of similar scrolls and folded parchments.
“Are they all letters of appreciation?”
“Yes.”
“How many do you have?”
“I don’t know. I just keep them because… I keep them.” She slammed the drawer with finality.
Severus hopped down from the bed and wrapped his arms around her. “Don’t be embarrassed about it. I think it is nice that all those people have taken the time to acknowledge your efforts. I think it is even nicer that you deem them precious enough to keep.”
“You do? You don’t think it’s silly?”
“Why would I? What you do, what you have done, can only be described as good Paula. It is only natural that the recipients of your… talents would want to thank you, and that you in turn would want aide memoire of that recognition.”
My grandmother told me once, ‘Kon del tut o nai shai dela tut wi o vast.’ It means, ‘He who willingly gives you one finger will also give you the whole hand.’ Hurry and dress or the kanny will burn.”
He sighed as she left the wagon. Five minutes later he was dressed and stepped out to join her. He watched curiously as she removed the blackened clay lump from the flames and broke it open. The birds feathers came away cleanly with the clay, leaving behind a succulent baked chicken that smelled absolutely delicious.
His appetite dwindled slightly when she opened the bird and began to remove its insides. “You cooked it before… doing that? Is it still safe to eat?”
She laughed. “I have no intention of poisoning myself, and since I did not know you were coming here today, the kanny is perfectly safe to eat.”
“Does that mean it would not have been had you known in advance of my arrival?” He bantered.
“What do you think?” She threw a handful of charred feathers at him.
Since they were eating outside, Severus transfigured his usual leather chair on which to sit, while Paula perched on her box.
“Damn!”
Paula turned from washing the dishes to see Severus clutching his forearm.
Drying her hands she stood and waited for him to gather his things.
“It is time, you have everything?”
He nodded, knowing she meant the will-o-the-wisp and herbs, yet unable to convey in words that he truly believed this was the last time he would see her. Instead he grabbed her in a tight embrace, shaking as he held on, his nose buried in her hair to take in the pure scent of her before…
“I love you Paula.” He said brokenly.
Letting go and stepping back, he apparated.
“I know.” She whispered, her teary eyes glued to the spot where he’d stood.
She turned and cleared the campsite, packed up the vurdon and shrunk it down to normal size.
“It is time Riley.”
He nuzzled her gently, showing he understood.
“Oh Riley. Jekh dilo kerel but dile hai but dile keren dilimata. Mukhenpe te khan la lumia…?”
(One madman makes many madmen, and many madmen make madness. If they conquer the world… ?)
The great beast watched as she removed one of the tiny ivory caskets from the black box on the ground in front of her.
The tears continued to fall as she lifted the tiny casket to her lips and kissed it.
Slowly she opened it, staring in wonder as the mist that was the soul of Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore her kak, drifted slowly up and surrounded her, giving her a feeling of being loved and cared for.
“Putrav lesko drom angle leste te na inkrav les mai but palpale mura brigasa.”
(I open his way in the new life again and release him from the fetters of my sorrow.)
As soon as she finished speaking, the soul disappeared.
She stood as Riley moved to stand beside her. “Those followers of beng, te pochinen penge lazhav.” (Beng-devil. They will pay for their shame.)
In one leap she was astride Riley’s back and he took to the skies, heading directly for Hogwarts.
