Chapter 58: Rest In Peace
Hermione reached up to massage her pounding head as she opened her eyes. She rolled over and felt a cold spot where Tom usually slept. Had he even made it home last night? Sitting up she looked around the room. Something felt very wrong. Then she noticed Thomas wasn't in his cradle and she hopped out of bed searching for her baby. With shaking hands she tried putting her robe on. Not stopping to find her slippers, she flung open the chamber door and went running down the hall to the dining room. Horrid thoughts of Thomas being kidnapped or killed raced through her mind.
Rushing in, she stopped suddenly as she looked in the room. There was the great Dark Lord with Thomas in his lap. He was talking to his son in a very quiet voice. The baby was laughing back and trying to grab his father's wand. Tom moved his wand about making color puff balls shoot out the end. This made Tom smile and laugh with his son. She couldn't believe her eyes. She had waited all month to see Tom interact with his son. He'd hardly shown much interest at all. To see him interacting with his son was quite an amazing sight. Most of the wizarding world would never believe it, even if they could see it with their own eyes. She leaned against the doorway; arms folded, and continued watching the two men in her life.
"You can come in my love. I'm just getting to know my son." Hermione slowly walked over to the table, eyes still on both of them, and sat down. "No need to act so surprised Hermione. He is my legacy and will fulfill the prophecy. I'm just showing him how amazing a wand can be."
Hermione hadn't thought of the prophecy for several months. She knew it was important to Tom. It had been important to her at one time too, but not now. Leaning over she took the baby from Tom. "He needs to eat," she said softly. She'd already felt her breasts leaking milk because she was late feeding Thomas.
"You don't need to go." Tom said leaning back in his chair. His eyes running up and down Hermione's figure, the longing clearly showing on his face.
Hermione stopped, "I don't feel comfortable nursing here. Anyone could come in here while I'm…" she blushed crimson, covering her breasts with Thomas's body. They both knew that wasn't a true concern, especially because of what had happened at lunch the day before. She really wanted to question him about what had happened last night? Which order members had been killed? Tom was clearly in a good mood.
"I understand," he said sharply and turned back to his breakfast; she was dismissed. Hermione left, holding Thomas close to her. Why did the thought of her baby and the prophecy make her so anxious? What happened last night that made Tom suddenly so interested in his son?
She entered the bedroom, closed the door, and leaned back against it. Thomas wailed as he grabbed for her wanting to nurse. "Yes, son, don't be too impatient."
Dropping into the rocking chair she tried to think some happy thoughts, but none seemed to come. After being here over a month, nothing had changed. Tom was still on a rampage against The Order. The Order was still fighting hard, and losing many against the Death Eaters. Thomas looked up at her with his inquiring eyes, noticing Hermione's anxious feelings. Thoughts of Sirius, Lily and Harry ran through her mind. Were they still safe? Had she made the right choice coming here? It was better to be far away from James Potter's fiery temper. That was one thing Harry had inherited from his father. At least she knew a few things about the man she was currently living with and sensed some control over herself and her situation.
Things at the Potter's house had been nothing but busy since two in the morning. Lily had stayed back with Harry, forbidden to step foot out of the house. The Order knew that a confrontation was in sight with Lord Voldemort and his minions. A spy within the Death Eater's camp had detailed the plans, and The Order had been ready for them.
Even with them being prepared for an attack, they had lost precious blood. Molly Weasley's brothers, Fabian and Gideon Prewitt, had been killed in the battle. Moody had said they had fought bravely, but Dolohov and the Lestrange brothers had overcome them near the end of the fight.
James, Sirius, and Remus had returned bloodied, bruised and limping. It had taken the next several hours to mend their wounds and get them all settled. It had been very close for Sirius with a near miss by his cousin, Bellatrix, and a killing curse. He had been looking for someone through the masses of Death Eaters and gotten distracted. If it hadn't been for Remus, he would be dead. All three men had been yelling at each other when they had returned.
"It was damned foolish of you Sirius to be distracted like that during a battle." James screamed across the table at his best mate. "Who were you looking for? Did you think that Hermione would be there with her big, bad Death Eater boyfriend?" Blood streamed down his face, into his mouth. He spit it out onto the floor.
"You're a real asshole James. If she had been there you would have probably killed her right?" Sirius stood up knocking the table, while Remus clutched his shoulders and pushed him back into his chair. Sirius's whole left arm hanging limp by his side.
"Stop accusing each other of things you know nothing about!" Remus was looking almost frantic as he yelled at his friends.
"All of you need to bloody well shut your mouths and let me try and heal you." Lily was so fed up with both men's antics, even though inside she was siding with Sirius on this. Hermione was one of her best friends now. She knew that she wouldn't have been there because of Thomas, the same reason that she hadn't been that this night because of Harry.
"Just be glad that we're not planning either one of your funerals like the poor Prewitt family is now." Lily threw a bloodied rag in the sink turning her back to the men. She needed to calm her racing heart. Thank God the men's wounds weren't as bad as they had first looked when they had dragged themselves in. Hearing about the fate of the Prewitts', she knew that it could have been any one of them or all of them lost. This war had done nothing but escalate the past few years. Lily felt so uneasy about her future. It hadn't helped that Hermione always talked so strangely about how they needed to protect themselves and Harry. She'd sounded like she actually could see into the future. She would do anything to talk to Hermione again, but had no clue how to get in touch with her. Now hours later with the men resting upstairs, Lily sat nursing a headache and a heavy heart. Harry played happily at her feet not realizing the dangerous world he had been born into. How would she protect her son? What could she do to assure his survival?
Hermione hid in the maze of the large gardens. No one would come looking for her there. She spread out the blanket and sat down to write a letter. She had to talk to Lily and this was the only way she could make it happen. One of the manor's owls was also with her in the maze. No one had seen her creep to the barn. Tom was locked away with his inner circle discussing their triumphs against Dumbledore and his Order. He had bragged for several days about the deaths of the Prewitt brothers. Now they were planning the next faze of the war. Hermione knew that today was her chance to get a letter to Lily. She wrote quickly, sealed it carefully with a curse that only Lily would be able to open it. Tying the note to the leg of the owl, she sent him away. She watched as the owl flew higher and higher. Today was the funeral of Molly's brothers. Hermione knew that Lily would probably be there, away from her Secret-kept house. It was the best chance to reach out to her.
Leaving the maze, she called for the nanny elf to bring Thomas to her. It wouldn't be suspicious for her to spend the afternoon out here in the gardens. This is where she spent most of her afternoons, but Tom had never questioned why. The nanny popped back with her son and he squealed with delight at seeing his mum. It always felt so good to keep this baby in her arms, where at least for now he was safe.
There were plenty of tears and hugs being shared that day. For the Prewitt family it had been their worst nightmare coming true. In any war there are casualties, but to have two family members die on the same night was almost too much to bear.
Molly had been inconsolable and her small children didn't know how to help their mum stop crying. Arthur had been with The Order the night of the attack. He had been the one to tell his wife of her brothers' deaths. The funeral was attended by all of the Order members and security was tight. The number of Aurors outnumbered the number of attendees at the service. Albus Dumbledore had personally put up the wards. There was no easy way that any kind of attack could have taken place.
Lily Potter sat by her husband, James, along with Sirius and Remus. Not many words had been spoken during or after the funeral service. Most wizards and witches felt that it could have been any of them lying in the coffins. Baby Harry had been left at home with Poppy at her request. Lily had gladly complied, as she was not bringing Harry out in the open any time soon. The men all gathered around Moody at the food table. Lily sat by herself to breathe the fresh air and relax. A beautiful snowy owl came flying towards her. Landing on the chair next to her it stuck out its leg. Lily took the note and before she could thank it or get a treat from the food table, the bird had flown off. Recognizing the handwriting she excitedly opened up the note. She looked over her shoulder to where the men were talking and turned her body away from them. Hiding the note in her lap she read Hermione's note.
"Dear Lily,
I miss you so much! It's not the same not having another Mum around to talk things over with.
I'm happy to be back with Thomas's father. But I sit in fear daily wondering how you and Harry are doing. Please be careful my friend. Keep your trust in only James, Sirius and Remus. Even Dumbledore doesn't have your best interest at heart. I hope that you'll believe me. I know I've been vague in what I know, but you need to trust me. I want you to be around to raise your son. I'll always help you anyway that I can.
If you can, we need to meet, just the two of us. How would two days from now at our favorite Muggle café in London? Let me know.
Love, Hermione"
In a matter of seconds, the same snowy owl came circling around and flew down beside her. Looking in her purse she found a pencil, answered Hermione with a big yes and a time. Lily secured the note and sent the owl off. Looking behind her she noticed James walking back to her.
"Who was the owl from?" James asked suspiciously.
"It was from Poppy letting me know that everything was fine with Harry." The lie came easily knowing that James would not be happy that Hermione had contacted her. "I'd asked her to keep me updated."
"You're just being a nervous first time mum, Lily. Harry is perfectly safe with Poppy." He smiled and reached out to slide his hand down her silky, red hair. "Come on, you need something to eat before my mates eat it all themselves." His hand grabbed hers pulling her up. "We also need to go talk to Arthur and Molly. "
She smiled and nodded at her husband, trying not to show how distracted she was. Lily tried to put her upcoming outing with Hermione out of her mind. She didn't want it to slip and have James make a huge to-do about it. She was going whether he or anyone else wanted her to do otherwise.
Next time we get to go with Hermione and Lily to London. There will also be more fighting and turmoil. I bet that you can't wait!
