Authors note~ Ok yes this update is long overdue… After starting to work and school fulltime, I had little time to do any of my hobbies. Now that my life has slowed down a bit I have decided to pick this back up and finish it for everyone. I cannot give you a time when I can update, but I will try my upmost to update a chapter every week… But as always no guarantees. I also went through and reread everything, not as a beta, but as a reader, so I know where I left off and after going through my notes I am confident I can continue where I left off. My writing style may have changed a bit as I have taken a couple of college courses in creative writing; only so I can become better. So if you have read this far just know, this was a very long winded apology. Not as long as I would have like, but it sets the stage for what is to come… Take care and enjoy everyone J
Chapter 57
Draco lay there, feigning sleep; enjoying the heat that radiated from his Harry. How could someone so small radiate so much heat? Although it was a discomfort he relished, and would go through just to have his small mate in his arms; where he could be safe, protected, loved. The only problem marring this perfection was the three other voices; disturbing his peaceful contemplation.
The soft snicker coming from his father had Draco focusing more on the voices; something amusing to his father would also become amusing to him. Slightly opening his eyes to look through his lashes; he was met with a very amusing sight. Severus looking down the end if his large nose; too proud to bend his head; glaring at Hermione as she look up her pointy nose almost straight up in the air. The picture was classic as the two stood toe to toe neither backing down from the other.
“I am placed as your guardian…and as such you will listen to me.” Severus’s voice dropped lower making his chest rumble the more agitated he became. Unfolding one of his long arms he reached out and flicked one of Hermione’s long pointed ears, making the newest Elf wince. “Hide these now…”
One aspect to Hermione that Draco could admire was she never backed down, most wizards and Elves would have already conceded to Severus’s wishes when he was like this. Not Hermione though, she looked over to his father, before making her next point. “Even Professor Malfoy agrees that a couple of hours respite from the glamour will not hurt.”
Draco looked to his father next and was barely able to contain his own snicker when he saw the evil glint that came to his father’s eyes. It was the only indication that Lucius Malfoy would start something else to keep his entertainment going. “Now Severus, Hermione…” His father looked over to Hermione, “I feel from certain circumstances that I can call you by your given name… That is if you call me Lucius, of course only in front of the enlightened.” Hermione’s brilliant smile and quick shake of her head had his father continuing. “I believe you are being a little hard on her, barely two weeks in and she has mastered the ability to blend into her surroundings. It makes me wonder if there is another reason for your instance of our newest Elf to stay glamoured at all times?”
Draco had to blink several times to confirm that was a smirk that graced Hermione’s lips. She almost looked like the cat that got the cream, with his father’s little impromptu speech. “Thank you Lucius…” She paused a moment sharing her little smirk, before staring Severus down again. “Yes…Severus…Does my new appearance disgust you, maybe you feel I should have never become an Elf?”
Watching Severus’s face turn red became Draco’s highlight of the day, and he could not wait to share everything with Harry. “All I have been trying to do is protect a know-it-all…w…Elf even from herself.” Severus turned to leave his robes billowing around him as moved towed the door. “From now on do as you please Mrs. Granger, as we all know you have done so well in the past at keeping yourself safe.” Severus turned to sneer the last words before leaving, “I pity the Elf that has you for a mate.” The door slammed shut, leaving the room in silence.
Draco looked over to the shaking shoulders of Hermione before slowly getting up so as not wake Harry. Grasping the shaking shoulders and turning Hermione around, Draco looked over the sad eyes, and quivering bottom lip. Before he could ask, a soft question broke the silence. “Why does it feel like I won the battle, only to lose the war?”
Draco kept his voice soft, “Hermione what do you know?”
“I took…Took the ancestry test, after my transformation. I wanted to see if I was a true Elf would have a mate and who that mate would be…”
Lucius stepped forward, “Sometimes in life Hermione, it is better to not know everything. To let things unfold naturally.”
Hermione looked up sharply, tears starting to fall from her eyes, “You knew?”
Lucius gave one of his rare smiles, “I suspected after the results came in showing Severus would have the chance to have another mate. You just confirmed it for me.”
Draco had to get this straight, “Are you saying that Hermione and Severus are mates? Are you even ok with this Hermione?”
Hermione smiled, her face transforming from one of sadness to sheer happiness just from the thought, “That is yes for both questions, don’t ask me why. At first I just wanted to be noticed by Severus, to be acknowledged. Lately it has become much more, I am happiest when I can be around him, even if he is being a dour dungeon bat.”
“That is yes for both questions, don’t ask me why. At first I just wanted to be noticed by Severus, to be acknowledged. Lately it has become much more, I am happiest when I can be around him, even if he is being a dour dungeon bat.”
Hearing Hermione’s response to Draco’s question, had Severus sliding down the wall, knees to shaky to even hold his tall frame up. He ignored what the ancestry test showed him, he didn’t deserve a second mate, if he could not even keep the Lily safe. He wasn’t special enough to be given this second chance at life, a chance to have a family, the chance to regain the once happiness he felt before attending Hogwarts. Why Hermione though? Why that insufferable, know-it-all, reckless, never can be quiet…Probably because she has been the only one who could make him feel any emotions good or bad, since he had pushed Lily away so many years ago.
Maybe, just maybe…he could believe it was possible…
Harry awoke slowly, first hearing the muffled voices infiltrate his dream, next was the sensations of the sheets covering him, the soft pillow below his head, how his feet seemed to tangle with themselves below the covers of the bed. That was when he noticed the lack of one particular feel; the extreme heat that radiated from Draco’s chest and would leak into his back, the strong arms that banded around his chest holding him as close as possible; and the soft puffs of air that tickled the nape of his neck. It was the missing sensations that had him groaning and moving around looking for his missing mate.
It wasn’t long that large soft fingers were brushing his bangs away from his eyes, calming his racing heart, giving peace with each sweep of those fingers. Only Draco was capable of doing this for him, one touch, smile, word; could bring peace, which Harry was never able to attain on his own. Sleepy eyes cracked open, and the blurry vision of his beautiful Draco stood over him smiling. “Time to wake up sleeping beauty.”
Harry crossed his eyes and scrunched up his nose at that particular endearment; leaning up a little pretending to nuzzle the side of strong neck in front of his eyes; he blew a raspberry. Draco jumped back as fast as he could wiping the spit that clung to his neck glaring, “How mature Harry.”
Harry howled with laughter, even Lucius and Hermione were chuckling at the disgusted expression on Draco’s face, “Yes love, but so worth the effort for this result.” Harry looked around noticing someone missing. “Where’s Severus?”
The doors opened and Severus swooped in, walking straight to Hermione, staring down his nose he gave his friend a glare before reaching out to flick one of her long ears. The problem was this glare didn’t seem to have the same heat that usually graced Severus’s face; it looked almost tender, if such a word could be used to describe Severus. Hermione smiled before saying, “They are not going anywhere Severus.” Severus leaned forward whispering in the same ear he just tortured. “I know, but that means you will have to put up with them being abused.”
Was that a smile on Severus’s face as he said that? And why did Hermione almost seem happy to hear that? Harry would have to ask Draco what happened while he was sleeping, because something was different.”
Harry went to get up, when steel like arms encircled his waist holding him in place. “Where do you think you’re going in such a hurry?” Draco said.
Harry glared at the arms holding him, “I have homework, studying for the test in DADA and the paper to write in potions.” Harry looked at both of his professors pleading with his eyes to help him get away.
Lucius spoke first, “Since you’re the top of your class, I do not think that little quiz is going to faze you.” Harry's pleading look turned into a scowl, what a traitor, hopefully Severus will be more helpful.
“For this one time, if your paper is not up to my standards I may over look the slight in this case.” Severus smirked, not being nearly as helpful as he had hoped. But who was he kidding, Severus actually helping him?
“Since you are reluctant to start Harry, I tell what I know.” Harry shivered when Draco’s voice spoke next to his ear, and a small kiss could be felt behind his ear before his mate started to speak again. “The first night back I was holding a meeting with the Sytherin's when an invisible Harry ran into my arms right in the common rooms. He was shaking, white as a ghost and would only say it was a nightmare.”
“Is that why you have been sleeping in the common rooms since we got back Harry?” Hermione’s voice showed her concern, but Harry still blushed when she said that. He didn’t want Draco to know he hadn’t been sleeping in his bed.
Lucius stayed quiet but was still interested if you went by the look in his eyes. It was surprisingly Severus who asked the next question. The one question that he dreaded to answer, only because he didn’t want to relive that nightmare again. “Harry, what was the nightmare about?”
Harry clutched at Draco’s hand nearly breaking the blonds’ fingers with how hard he was griping; and began to tell the Elves present what happened in the dream. Who was in it, that he could still think like himself, but didn’t act like himself, What was said, what was done, that he could smell, taste, hear, feel, and see as if it really happened. It still felt like it happened, and maybe that is why it was so scary to him, it didn’t feel like a nightmare, but more like an adventure he would have done when he was younger. The retelling of the dream lasted over an hour, by time Harry was done talking, his body shivered but it wasn’t from the cold, his face was tear stained, and his voice cracked on his last words. “I can’t go through that again, it was too much…”
Lucius spoke up, “Have you had dreams like this before?”
Harry shook his head yes, “Not as vivid, not as real, but I have had similar glimpse in the past like this last one. Before I always went to Dumbledore, and he would say it was my connection to Voldemort.”
Severus perked up before speaking, “We know that isn’t the case, so maybe it is something that the old Wizard has cooked up for Harry now. Maybe the start of his next adventure?”
“Whatever it is, it has to be something that was tampered with his bed, since then Harry hasn’t had another nightmare, and he hasn’t slept in his bed either.” Draco said; rubbing soothing circles on his stomach with the one hand he had free.
“I think it would be best if Harry slept with Draco, till this matter is solved…I am sure Blaise can find other accommodations till this is solved. I’ll go pay a visit to Harry’s bed to see if I can find…”
Hermione spoke over Severus cutting him off, “And how are you going to do that Severus? A snake walking into the lion’s den…”
“Mrs. Granger I have yet given you permission to address me with such familiarity, for now Professor Snape will Surf ice.”
Hermione stuck out her tongue to Severus’s back making Harry giggle from the crossed eyed expression his friend also gave, but her response had the room howling in laughter. “Of course, O’ great potion master Professor Snape…”
Severus even smiled, something that looked foreign on his face, “That is much better Mrs. Granger, now what would you suggest?”
“Well I am a lion so it would be easy for me to sneak in there, and poke around and see if I can find anything…”
Severus face fell, while his eyes narrowed roaring, “Absolutely not, you are not going to take one step near that blasted bed…”
If there was one way to make Hermione do the one thing you did not want her to do, than Severus did it perfectly. Telling Hermione to not do something was like giving her a green light to do the exact opposite. “If you think you can tell me what I can and cannot do, you have been sorely mistaken Sev…”
Lucius actually stood, coming to stand as a physical barrier between the two. “Lets come to a compromise, Hermione can let Severus into the lion’s den, and both of you can examine the bed together. That way Hermione will be in no danger, and Severus will have an easier access to the lion’s den dormitories.”
Both Hermione and Severus glared at each other before agreeing to Lucius plans. “I'll be there at midnight, make sure all the little lions are sleeping by then.” Severus said before leaving the room.
Hermione made a quick round of goodbyes before she too left the room, followed shortly by Lucius. Harry turned to Draco giving him a small smile, “it is just us now, can you tell me what happened between Hermione and Severus?”
Draco started laughing, and as soon as he was done he would begin to laugh again till tears were falling. Between each outburst of laughter he managed to say, “You wouldn’t believe it, but it has a certain poetic justice to those two…”
