Hermione came awake with a start.
Above her was a high ceiling. White. She blinked several times.
‘Hello?’ Only it didn’t sounded like her voice. Her voice wasn’t raspy and barely audible.
She turned her head to the side and stared at an unfamiliar woman who was sleeping in a chair. Hermione opened her mouth again but this time her voice did not come out at all.
The women, whose age was indeterminable—she could have been thirty or forty—shifted and yawned. She looked like a nurse.
Her eyes opened and she yawned and glanced at Hermione.
Yes!
Hermione tried to speak again, but could not, and for some strange reason the woman’s eyes were ready to pop out of her head. She sprang to her feet, and in doing so knocked over a number of vials and potions.
‘She’s awake!’ She screamed in a shrill voice, causing Hermione to flinch. ‘Alert the doctor at once. And His Grace—right away!’
Hermione frowned.
Why were they panicking? And why did she need to go ahead and bring Lucius in here?
He was probably responsible for whatever was wrong with her this time—
She paused.
No. That wasn’t right.
God but it hurt to think. She just wanted some water and then she could think about it..
The nurse ran back, kicking potions loudly.
‘Will you please get rid of this idiot?’ Somebody snapped.
Hermione tried to sit up, but lacked the energy. So she waited for what felt like an eternity but she figured it could not possibly be that long.
I’m just so thirsty….water….
An old man appeared, and he gestured to the two men with him, ‘Help her sit up. Give her some water.’
Someone pressed a cup to her lips and she drank greedily, but too quickly. She began to choked, and water ran down the front of her gown.
It rejuvenated it. She snatched the cup from the man’s hands and downed it quickly, ‘More,’ she croaked.
It was replenished, and this time she drank more slowly.
‘I’m going to ask you a few questions. What is your name?’
‘Hermione Granger.’
‘Do you know where you are?’
She glanced around, ‘No…’ She did not. The room was unfamiliar, and far more opulent than any room she had ever seen,
‘Do you remember what happened?’
She frowned. What happened…
What happened…
An image flashed in her mind,
Tell me if it hurts.
Pain…Malfoy laughing, I did you a favor…
She dropped the cup, spilling its contents, and her hands trembled.
No….
No…
She shook her head and began to cry, ‘He killed my baby, I didn’t know…oh my god….I didn’t know…’Hermione began to panic, her heart beat escalating and she found it hard to breathe, ‘there was so much blood….’ She waved her hands up and down and brought her fingers to her lips, and stared at the doctor, ‘why did he do that? Why?’
Someone yanked the person questioning her out of the way and she stared with wild eyes at Lucius, who immediately placed his hands on her shoulders, ‘What’s happened? Why are you like this?’
He turned around and hissed, ‘I said to make her better, not make it fucking worse! You imbeciles, get out!’
He turned back to her, but Hermione was mumbling to herself, ‘oh my god, oh my god—‘
He grabbed her chin and tilted her head up. His face was flat, but his voice was slow and soft, ‘Hermione, you need to calm down.’
‘oh my god oh my god….’ She shook her head wildly, crying, ‘please don’t be mad at me, I’m sorry.’
He raised an eyebrow and shook his head slightly, ‘What is this? I want you to calm down.’
‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry.’
‘What?’
‘I didn’t know there was a baby, I didn’t know, please don’t be mad at me!’
And she burst into tears.
She didn’t see Lucius’s hands clenched into fists, nor did she notice the effort it took for him to remain calm, ‘Hermione, did Draco make you leave?’
‘yes,’ she sobbed, ‘I tried to fight him, I really did. And then I thought he couldn’t be any worse than you, that’s what I thought, so I just gave up….but I was so wrong….he was so cruel…and he….he…’
She couldn’t talk anymore, she could only cry.

Lucius left her with the medic with clear orders to keep her sedated and to monitor her. He stepped into the room joining this one—his own room—and impatiently walked back and forth.
His hands were trembling.
He could not stop shaking.
The amount of hate and rage running through him seemed to mirror her panic and terror. He wanted to destroy, to kill, to rip his own son from limb to limb.
But he knew he would gain little satisfaction from someone who was now a mere shell, having been the recipient of the Dementors’ Kiss.
He did not understand why he should care so much for someone who was so utterly worthless and despicably impure.
He took out a bottle of whiskey and drank directly from the bottle—unseemly but he was too impatient to take the time to pour. He needed something to take the edge off.
Ever since she had gone missing it was as if he had been plunged head first into a nightmare. He hadn’t been able to focus, to sleep, to do anything. And with each second, it became increasingly clear that he was seeing, for the first time, things he had deliberately suppressed for Merlin only knew how long.
When had he begun to care for her?
Was it from the very beginning? The middle? Or was it only when she was taken away?
His feelings were so twisted and wrapped up in hate and self-disgust that it was nearly impossible to unravel them. He knew for certain that he cared enough for her to risk his own reputation, even subject his own blood to a life as a soulless hollow, and yet he still hated her. Not because she was a mudblood, but because she had made him feel this way.
Lucius took another sip before angrily flinging it away, watching the expensive crystal shatter, its contents staining the expensive Aubusson rug.
Lucius knew that right now he wanted to go back to her, to keep her in his sight because that way he would know for sure she would not go missing but he couldn’t do that. He didn’t want to deal with that.
And there had been a child….
He placed his hand over his eyes
I cannot decide what to do.
And that terrified him.
