"Hello, Grand--Headmaster Dumbledore," Roark said in surprise as a face he had not expected to see appeared on his com screen. "Why are you answering my grandfather's calls?"
"Jacob stepped out for a few moments. I saw the call was from you and answered it. How are you, Roark, my boy? How is Harry? I wanted to speak to the both of you before you shipped out."
"Did you?" A slight frown appeared. "About what, may I ask?"
"It was nothing important. It can wait until you both return to Caprica. You're both well, despite the tragic happenings there?"
"Harry and I are fine, Sir. How are you? You are well, I hope?"
"Fit as a fiddle, my boy, fit as a fiddle. And Tom Riddle?" came the question, his blue eyes twinkling over his half-moon glasses. "How is your case against him going?"
Roark gave him a tight smile. "You are aware, of course, that I can't discuss this case with you."
"Ah, yes...you did know that I taught Tom Riddle when he attended Hogwarts, did you not?"
Roark started in some surprise. "I knew that he had attended the school, but not that you had taught him." He looked at him, reaching out to pull a pad of paper close and picking up a pen. "May I ask you a few questions, Headmaster?"
"If you think it can help your case, my boy, then by all means, ask away. I'll be glad to answer whatever you ask."
Roark kept his thoughts about that to himself. Dumbledore, from the day he and Harry had entered Hogwarts, to the day they had walked out of that school, fed up with the headmaster's games, his ambiguous actions, his constant going on about some Prophecy that he had refused to tell EITHER of them anything about, had never given a straight answer to ANY question posed to him. Somehow, something in Roark doubted that he would now, but if there was information he could glean from the Headmaster, he would ask.
"What was Tom Riddle like during his time at Hogwarts?"
Dumbledore sat back in his grandfather's leather desk chair, a contemplative look on his face. "He was enigmatic, very studious, and much like you and Harry, he was very smart and...powerful. His magic was very powerful and better controlled than I had ever before seen in a boy of ten. And dark. His magic tended toward the darker arts of magic. He was fascinated with the Dark Arts and became obsessed with them, which we tried to steer him away from, of course. Like you and Harry he also learned very quickly."
"Hum...Did he have any friends?"
"I'm not sure you could call them friends, more like a circle of followers that thought much like him, hung on his every word. Purebloods...those that believed that magic should have been kept within the lines of direct Kobolian descent, of which there were very few left. The Peverell Potter's, the Lestrange's, the Malfoy's, the Gaunt's, and so on. I believe, even then he had gotten into magics that were best left alone."
"Can you tell me who some of those followers were?"
"That I can remember? His closest followers, those he considered to be his Elite, were Corvus Leatrange, and Admiral Lucius Malfoy's father, Abraxes. The Macnairs, the Carrow's, there were a few others but I can't bring their names to the front of my mind--"
"Albus, who are you talking to?" he heard his grandfather ask.
"Your grandson, Jacob. He called just after you left. Roark, my boy, you and Harry be very careful around Riddle. He is a very dangerous man."
"Of THAT we are quite well aware, Headmaster. Thank you for answering my questions."
"You are very welcome, my boy. Perhaps when you and Harry return to Caprica, you could both return to Hogwarts? There are a few things I feel I must discuss with the two of you."
"We'll see, Sir," he answered as he stood and left his grandfather's chair, moving out of the com's view. He waited patiently as his grandfather and the Headmaster spoke a few words, then the sound of a door sliding open.
"Roark," he moved into view taking his chair and smiling at his grandson. "How are you?"
A shrug. "I've definitely been better, Grandfather," he answered with a slight smile. "I was planning to write, but thought this would be much quicker. Time has become very short here as it is. Harry would be here to talk with you too, but we received an unexpected lead. He, FIli, and Severus went to check out the validity of it."
"That's alright, Rory. I'll be sure to give him a call later this evening. We've received word of Lt. Tristyn's death. Are you and your brother alright?" he asked, worry for both of them reflected in his eyes...in his voice.
It was mid-afternoon on Aquaria, two days after Tristyn had been killed, and the incident with Ardyn. They had had a meeting with Severus, Ardyn, and the Durins; then they had had a separate meeting with just Severus and the Durins to discuss their options and for Roark to share his plans. Then, over the last couple of days, he had called Admiral Roark, Commander Thorin, Dacian, Gabriel, and Raphael to explain their current plan concerning Kili and Logan.
While they approved of the plan, they had elected to not be involved, telling Harry and Roark to do whatever they felt they had to. Then, this morning they had had another meeting, Ardyn included to tell Logan and Kili they were to return home with Tristyn's body. They would also be taking all the reports Roark has finally finished, including the report of what had happened the night Tristyn had been murdered.
"Roark," came Adama's concerned voice.
He started. "Sorry, Grandfather, I was thinking about the last couple of days, and yes, we're fine."
"Has the report from the Chief Medical Examiner come back yet?"
"Came back this morning, and as we expected. there was nothing out of the ordinary that he could tell. The report simply says that Tristyn bled to death, but..." he shrugged. "I don't know. There was...something in his eyes...something just not right, and what's more, Severus and Harry agree with me, but we're all damned if we can figure out what it was."
"Do you suspect poison, then? Or was it something else?"
"We suspect both actually, but there wasn't any trace of it in his blood work according to the Medical Examiner. One good thing is that Severus was able to get a hold of some of Tristyn's blood. He's begun his own testing into this poison. He's waiting on the results of the sample he tested. All he can say for sure is that it's something we've not ever come in contact with. As soon as he can he's going to start devising some sort of antidote as his analysis is complete.
"We also have a few other unknowns making their round here that leave no trace of use microns or centons later. 'One of which your former Strike Commander used on me' he thought silently, wanting to tell his grandfather about him, but not. "Which now leads me to the reason I've called. Not, mind you that I didn't want to talk to you for other reasons."
"I completely understand, Rory. Am I to gather you've come up with a plan of action?"
"We've come up with something, but we're going to need some help. Harry, Severus, and I talked to Roark, Thorin, Dac, Gabe, and Raph last night, but for appearance's sake, they have elected not to get involved."
"Hum...if they've decided not to get involved then this must have something to do with Logan, and either Fili or Kili, if not both."
"Logan and Kili. We sent them home with Tristyn's body, as well as my late, but finished progress reports."
"I see," he said, looking suddenly very thoughtful. "Okay then, I think I have it. What exactly do you need this to look like?"
"We need this to look like we're trying to get them off Aquaria for good. We need something looked into there, and we can't trust Ardyn," he saw his grandfather's expression change. "I'm sorry, Grandfather, but even though we lack the proof we need, we believe he is the last leak we've been looking for. The main leak."
"And therefore not only Kale's killer, but Tristyn's as well?"
"I'm afraid so," he told him, seeing all expression leave Commander Adama's face, for that was who he had become.
"You believe that proof can be found here?"
"We honestly don't know. Christopher and his team were already working on that, and a few other things at their end. They've run into some walls. Ardyn knew that Tristyn had made some disks, one that contained the information on what he had found out on our leak. The other had information on all of Riddle's Terminators, including all the current information he had managed to find on Rodolphus and Rabastan. Tristyn had appare--Why Grandfather, whatever is the matter with you?"
Adama had gone very pale, his dark blue eyes widening in alarm. "Rodolphus and Rabastan," came very softly, almost too softly to be heard, but heard it was. "Would that happen to be Rodolphus and Rabastan Lestrange?"
"Yes, why?"
"They're there? On Aquaria?"
"Yes, they're here," his grandfather's eyes grew worried. "Rodolphus is Riddle's second in command here, his number one Terminator. He's the one who gives all the others their orders, and Rabastan is running a clear second to his brother, with Rodolphus' wife Bellatrix being third. Those three alone have a kill count that is staggering," he leaned forward, searching his grandfather's face. "Grandfather, just what do you know of the Lestrange brothers?"
