Epilogue
Nina followed a widely smiling Severus through the doors to the Great Hall. The place was full to bursting. Nina didn’t know so many witches and wizards existed. The long tables were gone. Smaller tables had been placed to one side of the room. They were bursting with foods of all kinds. Other tables had been set up to hold an array of drinks. House elves were scurrying around with trays, offering drinks and snacks. Everyone was excited and looked happy. Some were patting others on their backs, groups were hugging and chatting animatedly. Severus still smiled broadly as he strode down the centre of the hall towards Albus. He still cut an imposing figure and all stepped back to allow him to pass unhindered.
Nina still trailed behind him, running slightly to keep up as the crowds of witches and wizards quickly closed the space behind him. A couple of times, she was nearly engulfed by them as they blocked her way, not even seeming to realise that she was there. She finally managed to squeeze through the throng and get to Severus’ side.
“Severus my boy. I am so glad you could make it at last. It is good to have you back safely with us.”
“Thank you Headmaster. I confess That I too am glad to be here in one piece.”
Minerva approached them. “Oh Severus. You made it. We have all been waiting for you.”
Nina grinned up at them all. She felt happy that everyone was greeting Severus like this. It was good to see him smiling so openly. Normally he was very reserved about showing his true emotions in front of others.
An elf appeared in front of them with a large tray of drinks. As the adults were helping themselves to whatever took their fancy from the proffered tray, Nina realised that it was Kali.
“Kali?”
The elf looked at her.
“Yes Miss. Is you wanting something?” Kali asked politely as she gave a little bow.
Nina had not expected this. Normally Kali would get all excited and start fussing over her. ‘Maybe it’s because she’s busy.’ Nina thought and let it go.
“No thank you Kali. I was just pleased to see you.”
The elf gave her a strange look and disappeared. Hordes of witches and wizards were now beginning to crowd around Severus and Albus, all trying to speak to the Potions Master and shake his hand.
Nina was being pushed further and further back into the crowd. Severus peered around as if searching for something.
“Looking for someone Severus?“ Albus asked him.
“No Albus. No. I was just erm….do you know I have quite forgotten.”
Conversation carried on. Nina found herself against the teachers’ table that had been left in place. She sat on it to get a better view of everyone around her. Enjoying the fact that she could watch without being crushed or stepped on.
As she looked towards Severus she noticed that everyone seemed odd. She studied them all for a while, trying to understand what it was that she was seeing. Then it hit her. Every single person she could see, every house elf that was visible from under the enormous trays they were carrying, was slightly transparent. As she stared at them they were slowly becoming more so. Nina rubbed her eyes. ‘I must be really tired.’ But when she refocused, the only thing that had changed was that everyone was even more transparent.
She held her hands up in front of her face. They were as solid as ever. She looked down at her body and legs and felt them. She was the same as always. ‘This is so weird.’ Spying Severus she made her way over to him. No one seemed to notice the small dark haired girl winding her way through the crowds.
Eventually she reached him and made to take hold of his arm, not to interrupt his conversation, just to let him know that she was there.
She was surprised when her hand went straight through him.
Severus shuddered as he felt something cold pass through his forearm. He rubbed it with his other hand and carried on speaking with the smartly dressed but portly wizard in front of him. Nina looked at her hand. Turning it this way and that. She blinked and tried again. Her hand went straight through his arm again.
“Severus” The Headmaster said “I think someone wants your attention.”
Severus looked down to see a shadow of a girl at the side of him. He could see through her. “Yes. Can I help you?” He asked.
Nina stared at him. He was looking at her as if she was a stranger.
“It….It’s me. Nina.”
Severus thought there was something vaguely familiar about the young ghost girl staring at him. “You are new here are you not. Do I know you?”
She was frightened now. “What? Of course you do. It’s me. Why can I see through you? Through everybody?”
“Perhaps a friend of yours from your youth Severus.” Albus told him smiling. But he too was looking at her as if she was a stranger.
“It’s me Headmaster. Nina. Nina Manohel. Why are you both acting as of you don’t know me? I don’t like it, you’re frightening me. Please don’t.” Nina was truly scared now.
Severus looked at her again and back to Albus. “I assure you Albus that if I had ever known a beauty such as this during my, or her lifetime, I would remember her.”
Albus looked at her over the top of his glasses. “Oh poor child. You must be a recent passing.”
He turned back to the Professor. “Sometimes when one has recently passed away and then returns, they are confused for a while. Clearly that is the case with this poor lost soul.” They both looked at her as she stared back.
“Severus I don’t understand. We’re engaged. We’re going to be married. Look. You gave me a ring.” Holding her hand up to show him the diamond engagement ring he had given her he looked at it blankly.
“It is very nice but you did not get it from me.” He told her.
“The … the bracelet.” She pulled her sleeve back to show him the bracelet he had given her.
Severus was beginning to get annoyed now. “I have already told you that I do not know who you are. You have clearly mistaken me for someone else. I am sorry that I am not that person, but I can do nothing to help you.”
Her eyes were sad as she finally realised that they truly didn’t know who she was anymore. She backed away from them. She felt as if something had taken her heart in a tight grip and was squeezing the life from it. The pain in her chest was threatening to explode.
Severus and Albus watched sadly as the spectral form of a beautiful young woman slowly moved away from them and disappeared into the crowd.
“Such a waste.” Severus said.
“Such a shame.” Albus said. They soon forgot about her as they continued their celebration of the fall of Voldemort.
Severus was being hailed a hero for firing the final killing curse that finished off Voldemort.
She saw Draco talking with his parents. “Draco. Draco can I talk to you?”
Draco looked down his nose at her. “And who might you be?”
“It’s me Nina. Your friend remember.”
“I think not.” He told her. “I have never seen you before in my life.”
Nina once again backed off and this time made her way out of the hall, heading back to her rooms. She would go to bed and when she woke this will all have been a weird dream and everything will be back to normal.
As she was nearing the entrance to the dungeons she heard Ginny’s voice and turned quickly to see the whole Weasley family coming through the main doors along with Hermione and Harry.
“Hermione. Ginny. Ron, Harry. Oh am I glad to see you.”
They turned to see the ghost of an attractive young girl coming towards them. “Someone you knew?” Mrs Weasley asked them.
“Not that I remember.” Ron mumbled. He had no idea who she was. “What about you lot?” He asked the others.
They all shook their heads and watched Nina warily. There was nothing worse than the feeling of a Hogwarts ghost passing through you.
“Must be new. I’ve never seen her before.” Harry added.
They left and went into the hall, forgetting all about her. Nina was heartbroken. Her friends didn’t know her either. She arrived at the door to her rooms.
It looked odd. It was dusty and looked not to have been used in a very long time. She pushed it open. What she saw was a room used for storage. Dusty boxes full of parchments. Grimy dust sheets covered what appeared to be an assortment of different items of furniture stacked against one wall. The window was dark and dirty. The fireplace cold and unused. No one had been in here for a very, very long time.
“Kali” She called brokenly.
Kali didn’t come. Looking over to the fireplace she noticed the portrait of her parents was gone.
“Mum. Dad.” She called out but there was no reply.
Nina backed out of the room as it slowly dawned on her that she no longer belonged here. There was no place here for her any more. There was no one here for her any more. Whatever had happened tonight, something had gone wrong but Nina didn’t know what it was.
As the tears fell down her cheeks, she made her way back to the main entrance and walked through the main doors. They had been thrown wide open by the staff and left that way in invitation to all who wished to celebrate with them.
Nina walked down the steps and made her way across the grounds to the gates. They were also wide open. As she neared them two figures passed through, heading toward the castle.
“Remus. Tonks.” She shouted excitedly.
“Wotcha ghostie.” Tonks replied. “You been celebrating too?”
As they continued on their way Nina heard Remus comment to Tonks. “Ghostie? Only you my dear would have the nerve to call a spirit ghostie.” He laughed as he put his arm around Tonks and held her close.
Nina watched them until they were out of sight, before passing through the gates herself and leaving Hogwarts.
‘Maybe I can come back one day and things will be how they were.‘
After a while she gave in to the desperate need to look back one final time. She turned and lifted her head.
What Nina saw was not the beautiful, magical castle with it’s lights all twinkling brightly to the world. All that Nina could see was an old, dark, tumbledown ruin. A high chain link fence ran around the perimeter of the site. Danger signs were attached to the fence at intervals, warning anyone who happened upon it to keep away for their own safety.
She tried to Apparate into Hogsmead but nothing happened. After several failed attempts at magic she realised that it, also was gone. She was no longer Nina Gweneth Manohel.
The Gods and Goddesses watched her from above. They were angry. If she had only done what she was meant to do. What they had been waiting almost two thousand years for her to do. Sadly she had left it to another to complete the task.
(a/n: If you have the connection, start playing the song now.)
Back in the Great Hall a song played that made Severus prick his ears up and listen to the words.
How can I just let you walk away, just let you leave without a trace
When I stand here taking every breath with you
You’re the only one who really knew me at all
How can you just walk away from me
When all I can do is watch you leave
Cos we’ve shared the laughter and the pain, we’ve even shared the tears
You’re the only on who really knew me at all
Something stirred deep down in Severus. Something he didn’t quite understand. But still he found himself listening to the lyrics of the song.
So take a look at me now, cos there’s just an empty space
And there’s nothing left here to remind me
Just the memory of your face
Oh take a look at me now, cos there’s just an empty space
And you coming back to me is against all odds and that’s a chance I’ve got to take
I wish I could just make you turn around,
Turn around and see me cry
There’s so much I need to say to you
So many reasons why
You’re the only one who really knew me at all.
Why the hell could he not put his finger on it. Something was missing and he did not know what it was. His eyes searched the room, looking for something. What?
So take a look at me now, cos there’s just an empty space
And there’s nothing left here to remind me, just the memory of your face
So take a look at me now, cos there’s just an empty space
But to wait for you, is all I can do and that’s what I’ve got to face
Take a look at me now, cos I’ll still be standing here
And you coming back to me is against all odds
And that’s what I’ve got to face
Take a look at me now.
(Song by Pill Collins.)
Severus brought his hand up to his chest suddenly. The feeling inside of him almost like a physical pain. As if he had lost someone dear to him.
“Something wrong Severus?” The Headmaster asked at the strange, almost bereft expression on the Potion Master’s face.
“No Albus. No. At least I do not think so. I am probably just tired. Nothing more.”
Putting the strange feeling down to the excitement of the evening and a stupid sentimental muggle song Severus forgot all about it and continued to talk to any and everyone that approached him.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Five Years Later.
Megan Lawn had finished work for the day and was heading off to meet some friends at a wine bar near Kings Cross. She wondered if Travis would be there. They’d been getting on really well lately and had gone on a couple of dates.
Megan did not date as a rule. She could never let herself get close enough to anyone, besides. Running her own business took up a lot of her time. She had started off small, interior design was something she was good at doing. She started by making suggestions to people and they would ask her to make more. Then those people would tell others about her work and ideas and she began to charge for her services.
Within two years she had her own set of offices and her fees were high, always in demand. All of her client were well to do, influential folk. Many were in show business.
She had had the occasional one nighter when she met a particular kind of man. She would take him back to her house and into her bed. But it was always a disappointment for her. It wasn’t the bloke’s fault. For her, there was always something missing.
She always chose the same type, tall, slim and muscular, dark hair and sallow complexion. The eyes though, their eyes would never be right for her. Or the voice, something always lacked in the voice. Sometimes the way they carried themselves wasn’t right.
Most would do their best to please her. She was a beautiful woman and any man would be proud to be seen with her. But Megan would always blow them out before morning; never giving excuses. Don’t call her. No she would not meet with them again. She earned herself a reputation as an ice maiden.
Megan had really struggled to get where she was today. When she had first left Hogwarts she’d made her way to Hogsmead station and waited two days for the Hogwarts Express to turn up.
Having no money in her pockets she snuck into the luggage van at the rear of the train when the guard wasn’t looking, and remained hidden until it pulled up at Kings Cross station.
She snuck out and was able to make her way through the barrier that led from platform ¾
into the area between platforms nine and ten.
For a year she had been spoiled. Meals provided, a warm bed, a man that had loved her in every way imaginable. Nina put those memories in a far off part of her mind. She would go insane if she dwelt on them. Now she had to learn how to survive all over again.
It was difficult. Very difficult, the places she had previously haunted were now overrun with other homeless kids. She spent the first few nights sleeping in doorways and down alleys, anywhere she could find.
Eventually she managed to find a squat that was willing to let her use the attic. After finding a job she saved a little money and moved to a better squat. Circumstances meant that she was put on the emergency housing list and seven months after leaving Hogwarts she was given a bedsit by the council.
Using her meagre savings she decorated the place and when a friend from work called to see her one evening she was so enamoured of the room she asked Megan to help her with idea’s for her own flat.
Four months later Megan moved into a private let. Two bedrooms, living room, separate kitchen and best of all, her own bath and toilet.
Things only went up from there on in. Now Megan was made.
All that was missing from her life was a man. Not that she felt any real need for one. But something was definitely missing from her life. Well someone anyway.
Occasionally she would dream about her ideal man. But that was all it was, a dream.
Then she thought of Travis. Much as she liked him, he was still not what she needed. Maybe it wouldn’t be such a good idea to meet him tonight. After all, she hadn’t promised she would go to the bar. Only that she probably would.
Altering her direction Megan turned to head past Kings Cross and noticed someone familiar. He was tall, dark hair pulled back and fastened at the nape of his neck. He carried himself stiffly. The type Megan normally went for in a man.
She stood back against a shop front, waiting for him to pass and as he did her breath caught in her throat and she found it difficult to breath.
“Severus.” She choked.
The man stopped a couple of long paces passed her and turned to look at her with dark curious eyes. His complexion was as sallow as it has always been.
“Severus?” Megan asked.
Severus took a step toward the woman who had spoken his name.
He was about to go find a sweet shop. Albus may have retired from Hogwarts but he was still a constant presence there and Severus would routinely go and buy the old man his monthly supply of lemon sherbets.
But this was the first time he had ever been noticed by the muggles. Or at least noticed enough to be stopped by one. And how did she know his name?
“Do I know you?” He enquired.
“You did. Once. But it was a long time ago Severus.”
“I am afraid you have me at a disadvantage Miss …”
“Nina. My name is Nina.”
Something stirred in the back of his mind, something he could not quite bring to the fore. And a song. Cos we’ve shared the laughter and the pain, we’ve even shared the tears. ‘Why the hell was he remembering a song?’
“I am sorry Nina. But I still do not remember where I know you from.”
“It doesn’t matter. I remember you. We were … close.”
“I find that difficult to believe.” He looked her up and down. “I am sure I would not have forgotten you.”
‘It was true’ He thought. ’One does not forget a beauty such as this.’
“Oh but you did forget Severus Snape.”
His eyes widened slightly in surprise when she used his full name.
“You forgot me, as did Albus and the rest, some sooner then others, but eventually you all forgot.”
He was at a loss for words now, entirely unsure as to how to react.
“Where are you going?” Nina asked.
She had made up the name ‘Megan Lawn’ from some of the letters of her real name. Still thrown Severus stuttered. “I … I am erm … sweets.”
Nina laughed. “Don’t tell me. Lemon Sherbets for Albus.”
“Yes. But how did you know?” Something in her laugh sounded vaguely familiar to him.
“Are you in a hurry?”
“Not particularly, why?”
“Come on. I want to show you something. That is if you don’t mind going home with a strange woman.”
“I thought you said that you knew me.”
“I do, but you don’t remember me. So I am a stranger to you. Will you trust me?”
Severus could see no reason not to trust the woman. Besides, he may even get lucky with her. It must be about five years since he had last had pussy and he was certainly in favour of some now if it was offered; class pussy at that. It was not as if she, a muggle, could do anything to harm him. He had his wand as well as several magical talents that he did not need a wand for.
“Very well. Lead the way.”
Nina took his proffered arm and led the way to her house.
Severus was impressed when he saw it. It was a large Victorian building. Well maintained and on entering, he found it was decorated tastefully. Not overstuffed with furniture and there were hardly any ornaments cluttering up the place.
“Sit down Severus. I’ll get you a drink.”
“Thank you. I normally drink …”
He did not get chance to say cognac when a glass of the best quality cognac was placed into his waiting hand. “Ho … how did you know?”
“I know a lot of things about you Severus. From what kind of soap you prefer to how loud you snore.”
“I do not snore.” He told her indignantly.
“Like a wild animal. Same as you make love.”
Severus nearly choked as he was just swallowing his first sip of brandy when she said that. He coughed a few times and Nina handed him a glass of water. He drained the glass and wiped his mouth on the napkin she gave him.
“You said you had something to show me.” He gruffed.
“Oh I do Severus. I do. Wait here.”
Nina left the room and he heard her climbing the stairs. Hopefully, she would come down wearing a little less then she was. Or maybe she expected him to follow her. He was still trying to make his mind up when he heard her coming back down. There was another voice too. Both of them spoke in the hallway for a while, then he heard the front door open and close. Then Nina walked back into the living room.
“Severus. I would like you to meet my son, Theo.”
Severus looked round to see Nina with a young boy standing by her side. He had dark hair and black eyes. His complexion was sallow and he was tall and thin. Nina bent and picked up her son. The boy immediately threw his arms about his mother’s neck.
“Who’s that mum?” Theo asked, indicating Severus with a nod of his head.
“That Theo is the man I have told you of many times.”
Severus stood. He was feeling very confused and had a feeling that something was happening here that he should know about but did not. He had come here expecting a romp, not to meet someone’s child.
She put Theo down and he stepped up to Severus. As Severus looked down at the boy, Theo looked up at Severus. Severus folded his arms and Theo did likewise. Severus scowled and so did Theo. Nina giggled at the spectacle and both man and boy gave her identical twin glares.
“Are you sure mum?”
Nina nodded to her son. “But he’s nothing like me.”
Severus’ eyebrows almost shot up into his scalp. “What?”
“Severus, meet your son. Our son.”
“Theo sweetheart, this is your father. Severus Snape. He teaches potions at Hogwarts, where you‘ll be going when you‘re eleven.”
Severus Snape collapsed back onto the sofa in shock. Images kept coming into his mind but they fluttered away again so quickly that he could not catch them.
Nina leaned over and whispered into Severus’ ear.
“Relevare Pe Os” Does it ring a bell Severus. It certainly used to.”
More images flashed into Severus’ mind. This woman, for he was sure now it was she, was kneeling in front of him and swallowing him whole. Then she was beneath him, both of them naked as he pounded into her. They were walking together on a beach, swimming in the sea, dolphins. Shouting at her until she cried. Slamming a door in her upturned face. Refusing to speak with her when she pleaded with him. She was straddling him as he held her hips and they made love. He was on one knee, he was giving her something, a ring. The Great Hall at Hogwarts, her eyes, such sadness as he turned her away.
“I do not understand. I remember something, but not when, why.”
Once again the Gods and Goddesses looked down at them. But this time they smiled.
“I’ve got a wand.” Theo interrupted Severus’ thoughts, startling him.
“My mum gave it to me. She said it was hers. Mum said it’s not a real wand because it doesn’t have a core but it works for me. Look.”
Theo swished and flicked his wand like an expert and the coffee table floated into the air.
“Theo put that down now.” His mum told him.
“Sorry mum. I just wanted to show my dad that I can do magic. Mum says you can do it too. Can you?”
“I can. May I see your wand?”
“Sure. Mum says it’s made from rogan wood.”
“Rowan Theo. It’s Rowan wood.” Nina told her son.
“Yeah that. Anyway I don’t really need it because I can do magic without it. Did you know my mum used to be able to do magic without a wand. She can’t do it any more but I can do you want to see?”
Severus stared at the boy. “Did you at all pause for breath during that little speech? “
Theo scowled and pouted before turning to Nina. “Mum. Tell him not to talk to me like that.”
“Severus that was not very nice. And certainly no way to speak to your son.”
“He is not my son. He looks nothing like me. I am not even married.”
“Is that why you’re here? To marry my mum.” Theo asked excitedly.
“Mum said you and her were gonna get married once but something happened and she had to leave. Mum has a ring. She said you gave it to her. Show him mum. It‘s on a chain round her neck. Go on mum, show him the ring.”
Then the little boy stepped back up to Severus and reach to whisper in his ear. “She misses you. She cries for you sometimes when she thinks I’m not around. I‘m nearly five. How old are you? You look really old.”
But being such a little boy, his whispers were not that quiet.
“Theo.” Nina was aghast.
Severus was stunned. ‘How could a woman he only just met have been crying over him? Him of all people.’
The Gods and Goddesses smiled some more and finally relented. After all, things had still turned out right in the end.
Severus’ mind became a muddle of memories and emotions. Then the song came back at him.
“You left me. I loved you and you left me without a word, Nina. Why?”
Nina sat beside him and took his hand. She smiled at him, tipped her head forward and placed his hand to the top of her head.
