LEECH
Chapter 59
Severus woke to sound of someone humming slightly off key. Opening one bleary eye he saw Kathy through the open door, she was curled up in a chair, reading. The fingers of one hand thrummed the arm of the chair as she hummed some tune he didn‘t recognise, but her eyes moved constantly from side to side so she was definitely concentrating on what she read.
Stretching and yawning, his bladder informed him of it’s existence and he forced himself from the bed and padded through to the bathroom. It was as he relieved himself that he realised he was in a nightshirt. ‘Did I change before climbing into bed? I don’t remember doing so. In fact I can hardly remember coming in here so I must have done.
He cleaned his teeth and took a shower, pleased to find clean robes waiting for him when he emerged.
Kathy had been so engrossed in the book the ROR had provided she hadn’t heard Severus get up and use the bathroom. When the smooth tones of his voice said “Good morning.” from behind her seat she nearly fell off it.
“Bloody hell Severus you scared me half to death.”
“I noticed.” He replied, smirking at her as he asked the room for some breakfast.
“Actually it’s nearly supper time.”
“It is? I don’t usually sleep through the day.”
“You slept for two days and two nights. What happened to make you so tired? And where have you been for nearly a week?”
“I slept for two days and nights? I wasn’t here, I had to return and secure my position with the Dark Lord.”
He sat in the chair opposite. “You know sometimes I could… I could feel you, the emotional you. It was like at times you were filled with the desire to destroy everyone and everything. At others you were so distraught it almost tore me apart. You fought against the madness, I could feel that too.”
“Oh Severus it was awful. It still is, but I can control it now, well most of the time anyway. I couldn’t feel you, it was like you were lost to me. Everyone I know no longer mattered to me. On the rare occasions I was me, the real me, I hated myself as much as I hated everyone else when it took over. Did he hurt you? I’m so sorry I messed up.”
“You did nothing wrong Kathy, it was my fault. I was so immersed in what was happening I did not think to ward the door in time. I was not paying attention to the things I should have been.”
“So what happens now? I can’t go back there Severus, not after what it did to me. I was… am… dangerous I think.”
“He wants me to take control of you, take you back there so you can return what you took from him.”
“Return it? Is he mad? If I thought it would do any good I’d give it back, every bit of it, but it won’t will it? He’s not the Tom I knew Severus, not at all. For a time, when he realised who I was I thought… I think the old Tomtom came through, but it left as quickly as it arrived. What he did to my family, to others, I know everything he’s done Severus. It’s like I have his whole life inside of me, in my head. He… he did something, with his soul I think. Horcrux’s. He’s made six of them, but he had to kill to make them. He’s a monster Severus. He’s evil, a demon. He cares about no one but himself. He tells others they’re his favourite, his most trusted, he lies. He doesn’t care who he kills to get what he wants, even his own family, he killed them too. Look.” She stood and walked over to a small desk at the side of the room and picked up a notebook. “When I… when I was me, I wrote down everything that was him, everything I knew, still know. I don’t know if it’s any help but… “
She passed him the book.
Severus took it and read as he ate the late breakfast provided by the room. “This is… amazing. You are amazing. This insight into his mind, how he thinks, his twisted logic. Kathy you have given us more in this small tome than we could have ever hoped for.” He told her. “This will be of great benefit to the Order.”
He shot a glance at her as she mumbled something under her breath. “Pardon?”
“Nothing, just… take the book. It’s best you go now.”
He stood and walked over to where she was staring at an area of blank wall. “I am going nowhere until you tell me what is bothering you.” He was stunned when she spun and grabbed hold of him by the front of his jacket. Kathy was a good head shorter than him but her strength was way beyond what should be normal for a woman of her stature. And her eyes, they were no longer brown, but a deep, blood red.
“Go Severus, while you still can, I can’t… go.” She pushed him from her with such force that he fell back onto the table. It took him only a moment to gather himself up and make for the door. He opened it and dashed through, slamming it behind him as she made a break for freedom.
“Shit.” He muttered, leaning against the now blank wall. The loathing in her eyes when she’d collared him was almost enough to turn his hair white. Realising he still had the book in his hand, he composed himself as best he could, straightened out his robes and headed for the Headmasters office.
“I have never seen anything like it Albus.” He told the older wizard after waiting for him to read through Kathy’s notes. “Her eyes, they were like his, but worse. It’s as though what she took from him has been concentrated. How she fought it long enough to let me leave I’ll never understand, but even then it gripped her. The moment I opened the door she was racing towards it, trying to escape. Her control for the most part seems fairly good, but once it takes hold. I fear for us all Albus. Though I hate to say it, by allowing her to Leech the Dark Lord, we have created a second monster.” He’d allowed Albus to use Legillimens so he could witness what happened with Kathy just before he left her in the ROR. “It might take weeks before this leaves her.”
“I am not certain that it will leave her Severus.”
“Of course it will, it always does, you know that. The time varies yes, but it does go.”
“When she Leeched the others, she always returned what she took, what she was left with was a residual effect. This time however she has retained everything, and although she may increase her control over it, it may also gain control over her.”
“So what do we do? We can’t just keep her locked in the ROR indefinitely. It’s tearing her apart Albus, she needs help, she wants help. She hates what it’s doing to her. I want her back.” He added softly.
“We need to be able to monitor her when she is alone. Can you arrange that?”
“Next time I go in there I will ask the room to provide us with a way. But we need to think of a way to help her, and what do I tell the Dark Lord. You know what he expects of me.”
“You will have to tell him the truth Severus, that Kathy is too dangerous to risk letting her loose. Show him if you must, what happened in there. It may serve to cause him to fear a take over by her, thus distracting from his own plans for a while.”
They could find no other option but to take each day as it came.
Severus returned to the ROR the following morning, he’d barely managed to open the door more than a couple of inches when Kathy flew at him. He slammed it in her face, again shocked at the hatred in those red eyes. He wasn’t sure how much more of this he could take, or how Kathy would fare if the uncontrollable instincts did not abate.
