When Harry found out for sure that he wasn’t pregnant
everything started looking up for him again.
He wasn’t quite so angry with Draco anymore, and even though he wasn’t
ready to take the blond back as a boyfriend, they were starting to get along.
Katie Bell was back, and even though she still had no idea
who’d given her the cursed necklace, she was back on the Quidditch team. Ron was back in playing condition too, and
practices were unbelievable. There was
no doubt in Harry’s mind that they would win the House Cup.
Ron had finally officially broken up with Lavender as
well. Harry loved not having to avoid
her anymore. Another upside to the whole
thing was that Ron and Hermione were getting along again. The Golden Trio was back.
The evening before the Quidditch match Severus reluctantly
put Arabella down and ventured out of his room.
It was the first time he’d been away from her since the day she was
born, and he didn’t like it. But he
needed to see Dumbledore; he’d made a very important decision.
“Come in Severus,” Dumbledore said when Severus knocked on
the office door. Severus entered and
took a seat. “What can I do for you?”
“I’m not going back,” Severus announced.
“Not going back where?” Dumbledore asked, though he had a
pretty good idea.
“I’m not going to spy for you anymore. I can’t, I won’t. I’m tired of lying, and it’s too dangerous.”
Dumbledore sat quietly for what seemed like an
eternity. Severus expected the older
wizard to try and argue with him to try to convince him to change his
mind. “Are you absolutely sure this is
what you want?” Dumbledore asked.
“Yes,” Severus answered firmly. He’d given this a lot of thought, and he was
ready to defend his decision.
“You’ve been very valuable to me, but if you’re absolutely
certain…” Dumbledore sighed.
Severus was too shocked to move or speak. Was Dumbledore really letting him go so
easily? Dumbledore gave him a soft
smile. “I know what you’re thinking my
boy, but I understand very well.”
Severus didn’t know what to say. He was overwhelmed with emotion. “Thank you sir,” he mumbled and hurried out
of the room.
When Severus returned Sirius was just getting out of the
shower. The sight of him in nothing but
a towel took Severus’ breath away.
“Where were you?” Sirius asked.
“I went to see Dumbledore.
I’ve decided I’m not going to return to my post as a spy.”
Sirius froze. A
million different emotions hit him all at once.
Ever since Severus had had to invent an excuse and stop spying they’d
had no idea what Voldemort was up to, but Sirius didn’t want Severus to go
back. Now he wasn’t going to, and Sirius
wanted to throw a party, but part of him felt guilty. What would the Order do without their most
reliable spy?
“Sirius?” Severus said, moving toward him. “Is something wrong?”
“No,” Sirius answered quickly. “I’m just surprised. Happy, but surprised.”
It was Severus’ turn to feel a little confused. They’d never really discussed their
relationship. Severus had always figured
Sirius stayed with him because of the baby, but did he actually care? No one cared about Severus. He even expected Arabella to hate him once
she was old enough to know better than to love him.
“Oh, well, Dumbledore wasn’t surprised,” he said after a few
minutes of silence.
“I don’t think he’s surprised by much,” Sirius mused.
Arabella started to cry and Severus moved to get her, but
Sirius stopped him. “I’ll get her. You go on to bed.”
Severus disrobed and crawled in between the sheets. It had been a long day and he was glad for
the break. But even though he was tired
he couldn’t sleep until he felt Sirius crawl in beside him.
As usual, the air was filled with excitement on the morning
of the match. Severus decided to emerge
from his rooms again and go to the game.
He walked across the lawn with Arabella in his arms and Sirius right
behind him. They climbed into the stands
and took their seats beside James and Lucius.
Julian was in Lucius’ lap chewing on Lucius’ finger, and spreading
copious amounts of drool all over both of them.
“I swear someone must’ve put a drooling hex on this child,” Lucius
sighed as he grabbed a rag and wiped both of them off.
All of a sudden he started laughing, and Severus raised an
eyebrow at him. “What’s so funny?”
“Look at us,” Lucius said when he finally stopped
laughing. “We were once two fearsome
Death Eaters, and we gave it all up for bottles and diapers.”
Severus couldn’t help but chuckle a little himself. Life was certainly different now that he was
a mother, and he liked it.
Silence fell in the stands when the players walked out onto
the field. Severus wasn’t sure who to
cheer for anymore. He was head of
Slytherin, but everyone he considered a friend was cheering for
Gryffindor.
After about fifteen minutes it seemed like there wasn’t much
point in cheering for Slytherin. The
Gryffindor team was in rare form and the score was already thirty to ten. Ron, who usually choked, had made a few
spectacular saves.
The match didn’t last long.
An hour and a half in the score was Gryffindor 100, Slytherin 30. Then Harry suddenly took off toward the other
end of the pitch. It was a few seconds
before the Slytherin Seeker even noticed, and by then it was too late. Harry made a sharp dive and snatched the
Snitch right out of the air, holding it up for all to see.
A deafening roar erupted from the Gryffindors. They’d won the match and the Cup. Students flooded onto the field to
congratulate the team.
Draco however, headed back up to the castle. Even though Harry was talking to him again,
they weren’t close anymore. Draco was
beginning to wonder if he’d fucked everything up permanently. He still loved Harry, and hadn’t meant to
hurt him. He decided to let Harry have
his moment and celebrate in peace. He
never noticed the two Slytherin boys following him.
Harry and the rest of the team headed to the locker room to
change out of their uniforms before going to the victory party. Gryffindor hadn’t won the Quidditch Cup in
years, so there was definitely something to celebrate.
When they entered Gryffindor tower they were mauled by the
other students. Butter beers were passed
around and particularly good moments of the game were talked about over and
over. Harry didn’t notice Draco’s
absence until nearly two hours later.
“Have you seen Draco?” he asked Ron and Hermione.
They both shook their heads.
“No, I haven’t seen him since he left the stands at the end of the
game,” Hermione answered.
Harry frantically searched the common room for the
blond. He didn’t see Draco anywhere and
he was starting to worry. He might not
have been happy with what Draco had done, but that didn’t change the fact that
the Slytherins still had it in for the blond.
Draco was nowhere to be found. He knew he was in danger so it wasn’t like
him to stay gone so long. Harry raced up
to his dorm room and dug through his trunk searching for the Marauder’s Map Fred
and George had given him in his third year and opened it with shaking
hands. “I solemnly swear that I am up to
no good,” he said and tapped the map with his wand. His eyes scanned the parchment for Draco’s
name and he finally found it in a third floor bathroom. The dot was a little faded, and Harry started
to panic.
He ran past his housemates and Ron and Hermione seeing the
worry on his face, followed him. Harry
wasn’t sure what he expected to find, but when he threw open the bathroom door
and stepped inside he was horrified. Draco
lay on the floor, blood covering his body and pooling around him.
Harry ran over and knelt beside him. “Draco?” he called out and gently shook
him. There was no response. Fearing the worst he put his fingers on
Draco’s neck and was relieved when he felt a weak but steady pulse.
“Dobby!” he cried out, hoping the house elf would hear
him. A house elf could move around the
castle faster than he could.
Thankfully, seconds later there was a loud crack and the elf
appeared. “What does Harry Po-” The elf saw Draco
and stopped mid sentence. “Harry Potter,
what has happened?”
“I don’t know, but Dobby, I need you to go get….” Harry
tried to think of who would be the closest teacher. “Go get Snape!”
Dobby nodded and disappeared with another loud crack. Harry sat down on the floor next to Draco,
praying for Snape to hurry. Ron and
Hermione waited with him, too shocked to say anything. They wanted to help Draco or comfort Harry,
but they didn’t know how.
It seemed like an eternity had passed by the time Severus strode
through the door. The moment he saw
Draco his face reflected the horror he felt for a split second. “What happened?” he demanded as he sank to
his knees and pulled out his wand.
“I… I don’t know,” Harry answered. “I noticed he wasn’t at the party and I went
looking for him. I found him here and
called for Dobby to fetch you.”
Severus cast a few healing spells he knew and then levitated
Draco’s limp body and took him to the Hospital Wing. Harry and his friends trailed along behind
and waited outside. Lucius came down a
few minutes later, worry and fear etched on his smooth features.
“What happened?” he asked quietly.
“I don’t know,” Harry repeated. “I saw he wasn’t at the party and went
looking for him. I found him in a
bathroom covered in blood.”
Lucius listened to Harry, not sure what to think. He knew the boys weren’t getting along. He also knew why, but part of him wanted to
blame Harry for this. If it was Harry’s
fault then it wasn’t his own.
The small group sat there for over an hour before the door
opened and Severus emerged. Harry and
Lucius simultaneously got to their feet.
“Is he going to be all right?” Lucius asked his friend.
Severus nodded. “He’s
lost a lot of blood, but he’ll live. He
isn’t awake yet, and Poppy only wants one visitor at a time.”
Harry stepped back and let Lucius go in first. He was Draco’s father after all. Harry wanted to stay, but decided it was best
to go back to Gryffindor tower. The
party was still going on, the rest of their housemates having no idea that
anything had happened. Harry didn’t feel
much like celebrating anymore. He too
blamed himself. If he hadn’t broken up
with Draco the blond would’ve been with him instead of roaming around the
castle alone.
Harry spent the night tossing and turning. The next morning the whole school was talking
about the attack. Harry ignored the
whispers and after breakfast he went to see how Draco was doing. Draco still hadn’t woken up, and Lucius was
fast asleep in a chair by the bed.
Harry pulled up another chair and quietly sat on the other
side of the bed. He reached out to take
Draco’s pale cold hand in his. “I’m
sorry,” he whispered.
“For what?” Draco’s voice whispered back weakly.
Harry’s breath caught in his throat. “Draco, are you okay? How do you feel?”
Draco was quiet for a moment. “Yeah, I think I’ll be okay. I’m still a little sore though. But you didn’t answer my question. What are you sorry for?”
“For being mad at you,” Harry answered. “For doing whatever it is I did to make you
wander off by yourself.”
“It isn’t your fault,” Draco assured him. “I shouldn’t have… you know…”
“But I should’ve been more patient with you,” Harry
insisted. “You spent most of your life
living in a whole different world.”
“Yeah, but that should’ve been common sense. Harry, I’d never want to hurt you. I should be the one who’s sorry.”
“Would you two quit apologizing already and kiss and make
up?” Lucius mumbled, his eyes still closed.
Harry laughed, thinking to himself that Lucius had spent way
too much time with James. “Draco, will
you be my boyfriend again?”
“Of course I will,” Draco smiled weakly.
It was then that Madame Pomfrey came over and chased Harry
out. He needed to get to Potions
anyway, so he gently kissed Draco on the cheek and went on his way. He let Ron and Hermione know Draco was awake,
and then he did his best to concentrate on the day’s lesson.
