Lily had spent many hours trying to figure out how to leave the house. She knew that James would never let her go if he knew she was meeting with Hermione. The previous day she had finally taken Sirius Black into her confidence. James and Remus had been out patrolling for The Order. After putting Harry to bed, she and Sirius sat in the living room sipping glasses of cheap wine.
"Sirius, if I needed your help…and it was something that I didn't want James to know…" Lily stared at her glass, not looking at her husband's best mate. Her stomach churned, as she wasn't sure what to say next.
"Lily, what's going on? You've never asked me to do something like this before." Sirius put his wine down on the coffee table and stood to walk over to lily. He placed his hand on her shoulder. Lily reached up to hold on to Sirius's hand.
"It's not what you think Sirius," Lily said. She laughed thinking about the many things that Sirius might be imagining Lily was doing. "It's Hermione; we're going to meet for lunch."
The loud barking laughter filled the room as Sirius fell to his knees. "Thank the Gods it's only Hermione and not another man."
Lily shot a fake glare in his direction. "How could you even think I'd be interested in someone other than James?" Lily giggled and took a sip of her wine.
"Well, it did cross my mind. You and James haven't argued this much since our Hogwarts days when you were always defending Snivelus." Sirius leaned back, as Lily reached out to swat him. He stood and ran, jumping onto the sofa. He gave her a wink and then looked down at his drink.
"You know it isn't fair what you're doing. " Sirius's mood turned serious.
"What's not fair you charming dog, " Lily teased her friend.
"You know, you getting to see Hermione." Lily grinned at Sirius, knowing that this was going to be part of the conversation.
"She's happy Sirius. Hermione's with the man she loves and the father of her son." Lily said softly.
"I made her happy too! I was being a good father to Thomas while they were here." Sirius looked down at his hands gripped tightly.
"Sirius, I never meant that you hadn't made her happy. But remember, ultimately it was her choice." Lily moved to the sofa to sit by the moping marauder. She reached out to tilt his head up to look at her. "You are a wonderful man who deserves to be with a woman who loves you one hundred percent. It will happen some day."
"The problem is, I don't think I'll ever love someone the way that I love her. " Sirius stood, picking up his glass and the half empty bottle of wine. "Just let her know, I'll be waiting here to pick up the pieces when her happy world shatters apart." He lifted his glass in a mock toast, "Let me know when and how you need my help." Winking at Lily, he turned and walked into the kitchen and out the back door. Lily sighed and thought about Sirius's words. Maybe this was the reason that Hermione needed to talk to Lily and she was planning on leaving and coming back to live with them. She wouldn't know until tomorrow when they met. Picking up her own glass, she drained the contents, and took it into the kitchen. She could vaguely see Sirius sitting on the back step, now drinking straight from the bottle. Was she the only one who had seen this coming? Call it woman's intuition, but she had always felt that Hermione had been in love with someone else more and that she wouldn't choose Sirius. She'd also been in a situation of choosing between two men, Severus and James. She'd realized that you can love two men at the same time, but you always love one just a little bit more. Would things have been different for Severus if she'd chosen him? With a sigh, Lily, turned off the kitchen light, knowing that was something she would never know now and shouldn't waste time thinking about.
It was the perfect day to sneak off and meet Lily in London. Hermione dressed in a casual and comfortable outfit. She took extra care with her hair and makeup. Since this was the first time she'd seen Lily since leaving the Potter's house, she wanted to make sure that Lily saw how well she was doing.
Tom had left early that morning with members of his inner circle. Hermione hadn't asked him where they were going, and Tom didn't offer their point of destination either. The Death Eaters had been locked up in meetings day after day, planning strategic moves against Dumbledore and his precious order. Hermione had stayed clear of any discussions concerning Dumbledore. She still had to mentally order herself to calm down whenever she thought of the old bastard. Her greatest wish would be to escape with Tom and her son and whisk them away before sunset.
Hermione hummed as she peeked over at the loyal nurse elf playing with Thomas. Stepping lightly she bent to kiss her young son on the head. Thomas's bright smile filled Hermione with love and gratefulness. Who knew that this journey she had started years ago would bring this beautiful, happy baby, into her life.
'I'll be back soon Dossy. Make sure that he get's his nap after he eats lunch." The faithful house elf nodded her head and patted Thomas on his head.
"I's taking good care of the young Lord, Lady Hermione." The old elf bowed her head at her mistress.
"Thank you Dossy, You know how to summon me if needed." Hermione left the manor to apparate away for a fun afternoon with her now best friend.
Meeting at a designated apparation point, the two friends squealed and hugged each other. Both women gushing over how beautiful the other one looked.
"Let's go Lily, I'm starving." Hermione hooked her arm through Lily's and they practically ran to their favorite café, the Chalet Coffe Bar. Once seated, they both ordered a cup of coffee and perused the menu. The Italian food was heavenly here. But eating food was not the main reason that Hermione wanted to meet up with Lily. She'd decided that it was finally time to be honest with Lily. She knew that she couldn't have been truthful with her while she was still living with the Potters. After a scrumptious lunch, and an hour of small talk about the babies, the women finished their dessert.
Hermione looked over at Lily, trying to truly guess at her mood. The talk had died down, and an awkward silence was left with the two women staring at each other. It'd become a game of waiting for the other one to start talking.
Lily made eye contact with her and gave her a warm smile. "I have a feeling that you have something important to say to me. Am I right?"
Hermione gave a nervous giggle. "I guess we know each other enough that I can't hide things now." She took a deep breath and reached out to hold Lily's hand. "What I'm about to tell you, you'll probably think is totally crazy, but it'll all make sense in the long run."
Lily gave Hermione's hand an encouraging squeeze. Hermione took a deep breath and then blew it out. "Your son Harry, and Molly's Weasley's son, Ron, and me are best friends and went to Hogwarts together." The words came quickly out of her mouth. Lily's smile faded as she stared at Hermione. "If you haven't pieced it together yet, and I know that you are one of the brightest witches of your generation, at least that's was Slughorn always told me and Harry." Hermione kept on babbling, "I'm from the future. I left our time because the world had become a terrible and painful place to be living in."
Lily still sat and didn't say a word. She wasn't frowning, nor was she smiling. Then the tension burst as Lily started laughing so hard the tears were falling down her cheeks.
Hermione froze and felt sick inside. This wasn't the reaction that she had expected from Lily, maybe shock, but never laughter. Lily kept laughing until she looked at Hermione's face.
Hermione pulled something out of her purse. She slid it across the small café table. Lily reached out to pick it up. As she looked at it, her mouth fell open and she gasped. She gripped the moving photograph to her heart. Her eyes met Hermione's. "How old are all of you in this photo?" Her voice quivered as she asked the question.
Hermione smiled, "It was our fourth year at Hogwarts when Harry was in the Triwizard Tournament."
Lily leaned forward, "What? Why was Harry participating in the tournament when he was only in his fourth year? Didn't his father and I have something to say about that?"
Hermione head bent down as her shoulders drooped. She tried to speak, but her voice broke as she swiped tears away from her face.
Lily started shaking her head, "No, don't tell me…I don't want to hear." She sat back in her chair and crossed her arms.
Hermione felt lightheaded; hating that this moment had finally come. "Lily, why do you think I've been warning you about being careful and keeping you, James, and Harry safe? I couldn't stand to see everything happen the same way all over again."
Lily looked at Hermione with a firm look, "When did…I mean, when does it happen? Is it soon? Please tell me how Harry becomes an orphan." Her hands trembled as she reached out to touch Hermione's arm.
"Lily, I was always warned not to tell other's about their future while using the Time Turner. But, I'm going against everything Professor McGonagall lectured me about. Harry deserves to grow up with his parents this time." Lily's desperate, pained stare motivated Hermione on to spill her secrets. "Halloween night of 1981 is when…" Hermione couldn't say the words.
Lily finished the sentence, "…is when James and I die. Is that what you were trying to say?" Her deep shallow breathing was all that was heard. Lily began to shake her head, "But you're with one of them. James was right!" She stood up backing away from the table.
Hermione stood up, knocking the table, as one of the glasses rolled off shattering on the floor. "Please understand Lily, I'd never hurt you or tell any of them where you are. I loved Harry and would do anything to let him have his family in his life."
Lily stood hugging herself and she licked her lips. Hermione couldn't tell if she was ready to run or wanting to listen. "Lily, I'm putting my son and me in danger by meeting with you today, but I couldn't let any more time pass before you knew why I had been warning you."
Hermione cautiously walked to Lily and steered her towards the door. They headed out into the autumn air.
Lily help up the picture of Harry, Ron and Hermione. "He looks a lot like James." She smiled as she gazed at the wizarding photo of the Golden trio waving at the camera. "You look very different, especially your hair." She laughed and reached out to touch Hermione's now nicely tamed hair.
Hermione laughed and patted her hair. "I've grown into my hair from when I was younger. Lily, have you noticed Harry's eyes? They are turning green like yours." Both women started crying again. "That's all people could tell him; that he had his mother's eyes." Hermione held Lily to her, letting her mourn what the future could possibly hold for her little family.
"How do we die? Please, please tell me." Lily's red, puffy eyes stood out as she begged for the truth.
Hermione felt sick to her stomach. How could she tell her that the man that she loved would murder her? There was no way that she could reconcile all of this in her mind or her heart. "I know who betrayed you and James."
Lily gave a bitter laugh, "Let me guess…Peter Pettigrew. You've been warning me not to trust him. Is he one of them?"
Hermione nodded her head. "That is why he couldn't be your Secret Keeper Lily. You're on your way to being safe and living a long and happy life."
Hermione stood to leave, "I'll do everything within my power to change what happened before. " She reached over and gave Lily a hug. "Don't take any risks, and remember that you can only really trust Remus and Sirius; not even Dumbledore."
"Can I trust you Hermione?" Lily asked in a monotone voice.
"Always Lily! Always." Hermione waved and apparated away, leaving Lily on the bench staring at the picture of her son and his friends.
Hermione made it back several hours before Tom and his followers. She held Thomas during most of that time, even though the baby wanted to get down and roll around. Her thoughts were running in so many directions. Had she done the right thing? Should she have kept everything a secret from the Potters? No, she knew that she couldn't let James and Lily die again. Messing with the time line had become her forte and she was good at everything she did. It'd been so hard to see such pain and worry in Lily's eyes. But would it be enough? In her heart she knew that there would be more that she'd have to do to change history. The main thing that would have to be transformed was Lord Voldemort himself.
Hermione rubbed the back of her neck as she felt a headache coming on. Her mind raced, searching for answers. But none seemed to come that night. How was she going to outwit one of the most powerful wizards of all time?
The baby screaming in delight shook her out of her thoughts as she saw Tom tossing Thomas into the air. "Our son is becoming stronger and stronger every day, isn't he Hermione?" His eyes never left the happy smile that was on his son's face. He put Thomas down and swept Hermione into his arms. "I've missed you my lady," his mouth crashed down on her lips as if wanting to devour her soul. "Dossy, come get the baby!" Tom commanded the house elf that popped in, grabbed Thomas, and popped out again.
His attentions turned to Hermione. She saw the hunger blazing away for her in his eyes. It literally made her breathless. His want and need for her at times was all consuming. Hermione's body was already starting to tremble at what she knew was coming from her lover. Gods! It amazed her how him looking at her made her body quake with need.
"I want you, and I want you now." His words ended as his wandless magic stripped them both of their clothing. Tom tossed her onto the bed and lay fully on top of her. "I can never get enough of having you, over and over again." His lips latched on to her plump breast, while his tongue circled her erect nipple. They both moaned at the same time. Hermione's arms circled around Tom's back, scratching along his spine as he attacked her other breast. His hand slid down her stomach until his fingers became entangled in her damp curls. Their breathing became shallow, as they both were feeling so much physically and emotionally, which only strengthened their bond. The fires were lit and blazing inside of them. Tom's mouth made a trail of kisses down her stomach to find her opening. Hermione spread her legs in acceptance of the gift he wanted to give her. His tongue always knew how to do such wicked things to her. She wriggled on the bed as his tongue circled continually around her nub. It didn't take long for her to come, screaming out in pleasure. Tom's warm hands slid up her hips, over her stomach, and then caressing slowly every inch of her body until he reached her lips. His fingers brushed over her lips as his head came down kissing her deeply. The sudden gentleness surprised Hermione. He opened his eyes gazing down at her. She felt so vulnerable as he stared into her eyes. He wasn't probing her mind, but seemed to be searching her heart. He leaned down to kiss her forehead, each cheek, and then the tip of her nose. Lifting her hips he plunged into her wetness. His deep, measured strokes filled her completely. Each move he made seemed to have such great meaning. Why was this time different from all of the many times they had made love? Each passage made inside of her lit her aflame. As his movements increased in speed, Hermione felt faint. "Tom, more, please…Oh Gods!" Hermione screamed as she felt her body come again with full force. Tom came right after, as he ran kisses down her neck and across her collarbone. Lying on her body in exhaustion, she heard Tom whisper, "Don't ever leave me again Hermione."
She brushed her hands up his well-muscled back, and his head fell onto her breasts. "No, love, never again." She held him until his deep breathing signaled he'd fallen asleep. Carefully she slid out from underneath him. Slipping on her silk robe, she sat down in the rocking chair by the still lit fire. Her heart was still in turmoil as to what she needed to do. What would be best for everyone: her, Thomas, Lily, James, Harry, and Sirius. Staring into the flames, her mind raced through possible solutions for best-case scenarios for all of them. If she did nothing, then the past few years of her life would have been for naught.
She sat up with a gasp, when a crazy thought flittered through her always-active mind. It was the only thing she could do that would solve all of her problems, and save the many people that she loved. All of her hopes lay in one, tiny, Time Turner that had started her on this pathway in the first place.
