Sleigh Bells
Max couldn’t stop his jaw from hitting the floor as he saw how many bags and boxes Harry was piling up in the hallway. He actually felt his heart miss a beat, though that might have been from the horror of exactly what Harry wanted to do.
“How much did you buy?” He demanded in shock.
“This year deserves something extra special.” Harry said stubbornly.
Max agreed with that, it had been a hell of a year, a hell of two years given Nasta’s almost complete and utter breakdown the year before, and Caronwen’s surprise arrival.
Thinking about all that, Max’s stance softened, yeah, they deserved going all out. He sighed, as he committed himself to several hours of back breaking work. Harry wanted the entire house decorated this year, and not just decorated, but decorated.
He had ordered so many decorations that Nasta had confiscated the laptop from him after he’d bought a fleet of light-up, life-sized reindeer and a real wooden sleigh.
“Okay, fine, but you owe me.” Max warned.
Harry ignored the warning and cheered, arms thrown up in excitement, and Max smiled. Maybe this wouldn’t be so bad after all.
Four hours later and Max was willing to admit that he had been wrong. It was worse than even he had been expecting. Harry had somehow managed to order four times as much as they thought he had, and Max was aching.
He was currently up a ladder, tacking strings of large, colourful lights to the outside of their house…their exceptionally large house.
Harry was outside with him, but he was wrapping more lights around the ornamental bushes and trees that lined their front path. The fleet of reindeer had naturally been the first thing they had put up, and thankfully Harry had wanted that on the front lawn, and not on the roof.
“Harry, honey, don’t you think this is too much?” He tried.
“No!” Came the predictable, stubborn reply from below him.
“I’m not decorating all four storeys of our house!” Max shouted.
“You promised you’d help me!” Harry complained. “You’re the one that didn’t want me to climb the ladder! I was more than willing to tack the lights to the house, but you said you would do it.”
Max sighed, and mumbled to himself. That was true, he hadn’t wanted Harry to climb the ladder, or decorate the actual house. They were still a little protective of him after his surprise pregnancy and the birth of their princess, Caronwen, who was now nineteen months old.
He pinned several more sections of light, then climbed down to move the ladder along. He would have happily used magic, but they had gathered a crowd of neighbours already, drawn to their house by the almost otherworldly glow of the nine bright white reindeer.
“Will you turn those things off so I can get this done before Christmas twenty-twenty-two?” He hissed at Harry, who stuck his tongue out at him.
“It’ll be dark soon, then we can use all the magic we want.” Harry insisted.
“Only if you turn those things off.” Max said, looking at the halo of light around the nine reindeer.
Harry sighed, but he trudged into the house and hit the master switch that turned off all of the lights. Max was almost blinded by the darkness left behind.
He grabbed his wand, put up a few wards, and then happily started using charms to tack the remaining lights to the house. It was so much quicker this way.
“I can hardly see now.” Harry complained.
“Those reindeer give off so much light I’m surprised we weren’t rendered completely blind.”
Harry chuckled. “I like them.”
“I noticed!” Max said, giving the reindeer, and the massive wooden sleigh, an evil look.
“Wait until you see what else I have!” Harry told him.
Max felt his face fall. “What do you mean?” He asked desperately. “Harry? Harry?!”
Harry just kept walking, and Max felt his stomach plummet. Nasta had clearly been much too late when confiscating the laptop.
After finishing the four storeys of their home, tacking a mass of lights to every inch, Max was forced to put up several very large ornaments, including a light-up snowman and a life-sized wooden donkey and foal.
“This is way too much, Harry!”
“Shut up, Mister Grinch!” Came Harry’s reply.
“Are you two staying out here all day?” Nasta asked, inadvertently walking into their conversation.
“I hope not!” Max said.
“More than likely.” Harry said with a little grin.
“Seriously, Harry, no!” Max complained.
“I want this, Max.” Harry begged. “Please, please, please, help me.”
“It is already decorated, it looks like Santa’s fucking grotto out here. What more could you possibly have to decorate?”
Harry gave him an evil grin, and Max was afraid of the answer.
“At least take some breaks in-between. It’s cold out here, and you need something to eat.” Nasta insisted.
“I’m fine.” Harry said stubbornly.
Max just sighed.
“The kids are all demanding that the tree is brought down and decorated.” Nasta told him.
“Not yet. A few more days for the inside of the house.” Harry said. “The outside can go up now, but it’s going to take a few days…”
“A few days!” Max exclaimed, cutting Harry off. “What do you mean it’ll take a few days to decorate out here? Harry, please say you’re joking.”
Nasta sighed this time. “You do today, and I’ll do tomorrow. You’ll have to be quick, Harry, there’s rain forecast for Monday.”
“If Max sorts out what I need today, then we’ll only have a little bit to do tomorrow. If anything at all.” Harry said.
Max groaned. “Fine, let’s get this done, Harry.”
Harry gave him such a blinding smile that it brought out an answering one from him. He couldn’t remain mad, or hold this against Harry. He just couldn’t. He could pretend though.
“Oh, alright, but let’s try and do this quickly.”
“I’ll call you both in an hour, and you will come inside for a break.” Nasta warned them.
“It’s not me you have to try and wrangle here!” Max insisted, looking at Harry as he ran off to find more of the decorations he’d bought.
“It’s good to see him happy, and not stressing over heat periods and babies.” Nasta said, smiling after Harry.
Max smiled too. “Yeah. Well, I better get this done. The sooner I do, the sooner I’ll be allowed in the warm. You better have tea waiting.”
Nasta came to kiss his cheek. “You know I will, Caru. Try and enjoy the festive decorating…wait until he wants to do the inside of the house.”
Max waved his mate off. “We won’t have to help with that, Harry and the kids will have that well in hand. It’s a shame our older kids are still in school or they could have been out here decorating too.”
Nasta snorted a laugh, patted his shoulder and headed back inside to entertain their little kids. Max turned back to decorating the garden and the outside of the house. If Harry wanted a glittering grotto, he’d do his best to deliver it. He would grumble and groan about it though.

The official light up of their house and garden was heavily attended, as Harry corralled all of their kids outside to watch everything light up.
Max had to admit that it was spectacular, he and Harry had worked hard on it…Nasta had too, and seeing it all come together, just like it had in Harry’s crazy mind, felt like all that hard work was worth it.
He grinned stupidly at all the colourful twinkling lights, at the nine reindeer and the life-sized sleigh. The lights in the potted trees lining their front path. The giant, twelve foot, fully decorated Christmas tree at their front gate.
He inhaled, held it, and then blew out heavily. It was worth it. Seeing it all lit up like this, it was very festive, and despite that it was still early December, Harry was right, they deserved this, and so did their kids, who made a beeline for the sleigh and climbed right on in…so that was why Harry had wanted it on the lawn.
With home-schooling the little ones who weren’t in Hogwarts, their immense fear for their ten year old Faerie twins, and the general added stress of this year…well, they really did deserve all of the treats, all of the nice things, anything they could think of.
“You did a good job.” Draco praised.
Max threw an arm around him, watching as Harry fluttered around the massive tree with a gaggle of kids.
“Yeah, we did, but it’s good to see him happy.” Max said.
“We all need happy this year.” Draco insisted.
“At least the neighbours are happy.” Blaise snorted, stood with a cup of coffee in his hands despite that it was late evening, watching as the neighbours seemed to be gathering at their fences and hedges, looking at their house that was lit up like some sort of monstrous bonfire.
Already there were little kids pointing and gaping at their house, finding something new each time they looked.
Max grinned to see them. “Damn yeah, we did good.” He said, and left his two mates to go to Harry down by their front gate.
It had been some hard work, but he was pleased now that it was done. He turned and surveyed his handiwork…well, his, Harry’s, and Nasta’s, but still.
“Daddy!”
Max turned to scoop up the black haired little girl who had run at him.
“Hello, Princess.”
“Queen.” Vanora immediately corrected him. “I’m a Queen, Daddy Max.”
Max smiled at the seven year old, and he kissed her head gently.
“What do you think?” He asked. “Good, or has mummy gone crazy overboard?”
“It’s the best ever.” Vanora said with a grin. “We should do this every year.”
Max laughed. “Oh, I think mummy is going to insist on it every year now.”
“Good.” Vanora told him, before squirming to be put down again.
Max made sure she had her feet, before she charged off over the front lawn to the wooden sleigh. That thing was going to become a very well-worn toy in the next few weeks, until they packed it away with several powerful shrinking charms.
He sent one last look over the garden, before heading inside. He’d had enough of being outside for one day. Tomorrow they’d have to decorate the inside of the house to match…maybe he should make sure that he was scheduled to work.

A/N: A little slice of Christmas for you, lovelies. I’m planning…hoping, to update twelve of these little Christmas chapters, for a traditional twelve days of Christmas, but so far I only have six written, so we’ll see how well that goes as I carry on. But it’ll be a chapter a day starting from today. As a bit of forewarning, some of them are rather short, as they’re just little blurbs about the guys’ Christmas this year, but I hope you still like them all the same.
