Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter. That lucky duck JK Rowling does. I don't make any money from this fanfic. I just play with her toys and put them back in relatively good condition. |
Hermione and Draco cuddled together on a weathered wooden bench and took in the last sunrise they would ever see. It seemed fitting, to spend this time at this place, the place they learned they would lose Harry. They remembered the heart wrenching feeling of knowing that he was slated to die. And now it was their turn but there were no guarantees of coming back, not even a glimmer of hope that they would survive. The bargain didn’t call for mercy. It called for an end.
‘Beautiful,’ she thought to him, not wanting to break the peaceful silence that they were enveloped in.
‘Yes you are,’ he said, smirking at her wrinkled nose. ‘And yes, a rather lovely sunrise. It’s kind of perfect, cool crisp morning, the love of my life beside me, and a sunset that pales in comparison.’
She sighed and snuggled further under his arm. Tonight was the night. Ironic how it would end the same night the last threat did. Then again, perhaps it wasn’t irony so much as planned. The one night of the year the veil was thinnest. Perhaps the Gods were strongest then as well. But it was past time for speculations and musings. It was time to act, enjoy what they could, and say goodbye in a way that wouldn’t be suspicious.
Draco laughed aloud, breaking the peaceful sounds of nature. “Not suspicious. Come on love, let’s go spend the day with our family.”

“I hate you,” Rose seethed, staring her parents down across the table.
They sighed, knowing this would happen. They could kill Melody for making the counter offer. They could see why they did it. The deal offered true freedom from everything, leaving them absolutely normal… for wizards. But it meant their children knew about their deal.
“You’re entitled to it,” Draco said softly. “But we’d rather spend our last hours together. Can you wait to hate us until after we’re gone?”
Tears streamed down Rose’s cheeks. “I don’t want you to go.”
Hermione wiped the tears from her eyes. “We don’t want to leave sweetheart, but we don’t have a choice. This is our only chance.”
“You mean our only chance,” Scorpius said morosely. “You have no chance.”
“Please Scorp,” Draco said quietly. “You have no idea how badly we hate this.”
“We do,” Ara whispered. “We talked to Uncle Harry.”
“What did he say?” Hermione asked, her voice wavering.
“He said how horrible the decision he had to make was,” Jacob choked out. “He said… he said he was beside himself at the thought of having to leave a wife and friends. He couldn’t imagine what would happen if he’d had kids.”
“Oh gods,” Hermione broke down, sobbing as she dove over the table and scooped the nearest child up, which happened to be Rose.
The others joined in, forming one big pile of Malfoys. They didn’t know how long they were like that before the rest of their extended family came in. They led them to the middle of the living room where everyone, new and old, joined the pile. Everyone was drenched in tears, knowing this was the end for two. Worse still, there was no guarantee that they would be the only two. Albus and Martin trilled a mournful tune, coming to rest on top of the pile of family.
“Enough of this sappiness,” Melody announced after a long time, wiping the tears from her eyes. “Let’s talk strategy. Hermione and Draco will need to be spared during the mortal fight. They have to be saved for the grand finale. So it is up to us to crush Moira and her unfortunate followers. We have more than enough people to do that now, good creatures and people who have lost loved ones because we’ve failed to stop her so far. But no longer. Who has a suggestion?”
“Strategically, it would be wise to take out the strongest first,” Aiden said. “Because the weak ones can be held off longer. So it begs the question, which creatures are strongest?”
“Magically or physically?” Zach asked. “Because they both require different strategies to defeat. Physically, I’d have to say the daywalkers and any vampires on their side have it simply because of brute strength and the ability to regenerate. There will be more than enough fresh blood to do so. Magically?”
“Us,” Jonah crowed.
Zach frowned at him. “The fae. Elemental magic is unpredictable at the best of times, powerful and almost unstoppable. There is no telling how it will react on the plain.”
“Or to ours,” Violetta added quietly. “Daddy could scarcely handle my baby magic. I couldn’t imagine them in an elemental setting controlled by a mad woman and a god.”
“Very true,” Melody said. “So we’ll all make lists categorizing who we believe to be the biggest threats and correlate them with the creatures. But Vi also brings up another valid point, the Gods. We’re not really sure who all we will be facing.”
“You mean who they are facing,” Scorpius said sourly.
“That’s enough,” Harry called. “Hermione and Malfoy are making the greatest sacrifice for us. We all hate it. They hate it. There is no sense in arguing over it when there is so little time.”
Hermione gave him a watery smile before clearing her throat. “We know Hades will be a very large part of it. But we also suspect that Allecto, Tisiphone, Megaera, Chaos, Eris, and especially Ares will be joining him. The god of war will be formidable all on his own. The others? Completely unpredictable.”
“So who does that leave?” James asked.
“Fortuna, Nemesis, The Fates, Persephone, and hopefully Zeus,” Nate said. “Triton and Poseidon are still up in the air. I am sorry I let everyone down.”
“Nonsense,” Melody snapped. “You spoke to the god of the fucking sea face to face. It’s enough. But there are other gods and goddesses that we haven’t thought about. Chances are that they will stay out of it, but that’s not a guarantee. Gods can’t resist a good fight. Therefore, we can probably count on strays.”
“It’s going to be impossible,” Serena said sadly.
“Not if we have faith,” Harry said fiercely. “I walked to my death because I had faith that my sacrifice would end it. And it did. We must have faith that their sacrifice will too.”
“Who else will we be sacrificing though,” Philippe asked quietly from a dark corner under the stairs.
“We don’t know,” Melody admitted. “But we haven’t come this far to go home now. Albus and Martin have already made the sacrifice. I’m willing. Who else?”
“I am,” Zandra said loudly. “You saved my life after they tried to take it from me. I’ll be damned if I stand by and watch someone else fight my battle.”
“I am,” Annabel said. “I’ve known most of you my whole life. I can’t think of a better way to die than to do it protecting my kind. My dad will understand. I’m sure he’d even be proud.”
“Your father was formidable,” Alex said softly. “And I have a feeling you will be, too. Count me in.”
One by one, all the children and adults re-pledged themselves to the cause and sat in awe as all the deals made to the Gods were carefully explained. It was prudent to search for any loopholes since they had been exploited in the past. But there weren’t any. The fate of the pure was iron clad.
“How do we get to the plain?” Andra asked, startling everyone. She’d been so quiet the entire time but there was a quiet fire in her eyes. She was ready.
“Nemesis has agreed to open the doorway right here on the Ranch,” Melody said. “Which means we’ll all need to be ready for attack then.”
“When does it start?”
“At the stroke of midnight,” Harmony said, her eyes wide and unseeing. “We’ll be admitted to the plain and given a full minute to adjust.”
“How bloody generous,” Ginny snorted. “An entire minute to orient ourselves to a new battlefield and environment.”
“I can’t change the facts,” Harmony said apologetically. “The battle will take place but I can’t see the ending. They’ve taken the sight from me past that date, probably punishment for trying to give up the gifts.”
“They can bloody well hang,” Rhapsody said sourly. “I don’t miss the nightmares.”
“I won’t miss the headaches,” Cadence said softly.
“And I can punk you whenever I want,” Zach called cheerfully.
“You aren’t that good,” Rhapsody said, a twinkle in her eye.
The children traded insults and tentative hopes for the future for a while. Hermione and Draco sat back and enjoyed the easy camaraderie of it all. It reminded them of a time when they were that age, facing the impossible. Only this time, there would be no holds barred. After the mortals were taken care of, they would be thrust from the realm and the real fight would begin. And it would be in the Gods’ hands after that.
“Alright,” Melody said, calling everyone to order. “This is our last day so everyone write your lists, share, and then we’re all going to do something I’ve been itching to do for years.”
“Clubbing?” Celeste asked with a grin.
Melody rolled her eyes. “No. We’re all watching cartoons!”
“What are we going to do today, Brain?” Hermione and Ginny called.
“The same thing we do every day, Pinky,” Harry and Draco called.
“Try to take over the world!” Alex and Philippe called.
Melody cackled like a mad woman. “Come on. Pop some popcorn. Let’s watch some of the best evil plots gone horribly wrong ever!”
Hermione and Draco chuckled, remembering how they’d done the same thing in the Room of Requirement years ago. As they settled in, they wondered what it would be like after…. After.
AN: Yeah, it's short. I'm sorry. I wanted the battle to be epic and it isn't coming out right but I wanted to give you something. So the next chapter will be the big one... hopefully. As always, thanks to everyone who reviewed. I promise they make it all better. Keep them coming and let me know how I'm doing. Until next time... Love you guys!
