The hours ticked by, and Hermione did not return.
Damn her. I am going to kill her when I see her next. Running around the manor at all hours of the night, getting up to gods-know-what, flaunting herself in front of Lucius like that. Stupid girl. She has no idea how quickly she could find herself in over her head. And then he’d be the one that would have to rescue her. Gods. Maybe he should just leave her to her own devices. Except that he had promised Albus that he would keep an eye on things.
Snape got up and poured himself a Scotch, waiting for her to return.

Unaware of her former Potions Master’s fuming, Hermione and Ginny were spending the evening chatting, gossiping, worrying, and giggling; conversation ranged from a somewhat serious discussion of the size of the guest list (“800 people? That’s huge! I can’t believe the Ministry is letting him do that… Oh yeah, I guess money does talk, huh?”), to the slightly fearful (“All those Malfoys, and all those Weasleys, not to mention everyone else. How long do you think it will be before the guests are hexing one another?”), to the speculative (“I wonder who Harry’s bringing as a date this time?”).
Ginny had brought a bottle of wine, and the two of them were sipping their wine as they chatted. “It’s good to see that Snape hasn’t changed at all. He’s still his same cantankerous self, I see.”
“I don’t know, Herm. The way he was looking at you in that dress tonight – he either wanted to rip it off you, or cover you with a heavy cloak!”
“Oh. I didn’t realize that. All I ever noticed is that he kept glowering at his plate like it was going to poison him or something.”
“Nope,” Ginny giggled. “He kept looking over at you. Of course, Lucius couldn’t tear himself away from you, either. Even when Draco was telling him that one of the gardens may have to be completely replanted after the wedding he just nodded – he barely even looked over at him.” She paused. “Yup. I think you sent a tremor through the wizarding world with that dress. So, what are you going to wear for dinner tomorrow?” she grinned.
Hermione took a sip of her wine. “I didn’t actually quite mean to have that impression with the dress. Still, it was sort of fun. I’m always in robes at work, and I don’t go any place on the weekends.” She sighed. “You realize, this is my one big social event of the year?” She smiled as she said it, although there was an underlying sadness; she didn’t go out much, and when she did it was usually with colleagues from work.
“Well then, have fun with it. Don’t worry about what Snape thinks – he’s probably just too repressed to recognize how good you can look when you put a mind to it. I mean, look at him. He’s always dressed in those black clothes of his – he probably orders 5 sets of the same thing, and just rotates it each day. And Lucius? From what Draco says, he appreciates anything in a dress that’s more than 3 feet tall!” Hermione smiled.
“Okay. You’ve convinced me. I’ve been thinking about a couple of other dresses that I’ve seen – it might be sort of fun to see how they come out.”
Ginny giggled. “Yeah, and we’ll see if Snape even notices! Still, I think you should wear something like that for the reception – there’ll be tons of people there, and it’s time we did something about your love life. You can’t spend your entire life in a lab – it’s not healthy.” She paused. “Now I know that none of my brothers have caught your interest – despite Ron’s attempts in the past, and Bill’s wistful longings,” Hermione snorted, “but, everyone is going to be there – I bet we could find someone that meets your exacting standards.” Hermione snorted again.
“No, really. Let’s see. He’s got to be bright – that’s a given. He can’t be easily threatened by a successful woman. Independent enough that he won’t drive you nuts in a few hours. Older, too, so that he won’t get pushed around by you too easily.” She paused. “Sexy would be good, too. What d’ya think? Tall, dark, and handsome? Or maybe blonde hair, blue eyes?”
Ginny paused, as an idea formed in her head. “You know. I think Snape would be perfect for you. Seriously. No, wait,” she protested as Hermione hit her square in the head with a pillow.
“Really. Snape’s smart. I bet he wouldn’t be threatened by a successful woman – I doubt he’d be threatened by anything. And,” she added slyly, “He’s got that whole tall and dark thing going on.”
“Yeah, and he’s got the whole totally creepy thing going on too,” Hermione added dryly.
“Oh c’mon. You’ve told me how the men you work with are either Dumbledore’s age, or, as you have said repeatedly, ‘drips’. Snape’s not very oldbut old enough for you, I think. Besides, who knows what sort of personality he’s got buried under that austere coat of his,” Ginny speculated.
“Oh, probably, a black heart and a bad attitude,” Hermione giggled. “Still, what do you suggest I do, go up to him, ‘Oh, hi professor Snape. I know you hate me, you’ve always hated me, and you can’t even bring yourself to talk to me, but Ginny thinks we’d make a good couple – do you want to nip off to a dark corner for a while?’”
Ginny giggled, and poured them both some more wine. Still, the idea wasn’t a bad one. It actually sort of made sense. Now, if the two of them just wouldn’t be so stubborn.
“Besides, Hermione, you realize that my parents would remove your honorary membership in our family if you took up with Lucius. At least Snape’s a member of the Order.”
Hermione shook her head. “I’m not going to ‘take up with’ Lucius, as you put it. He’s just lonely – I’m the only unattached female around at the moment, and he probably doesn’t get too many visitors these days.”
Ginny snorted. Draco had told her enough about his father’s whores to know that he wasn’t lonely. Still, she wasn’t going to argue with Hermione unless it looked like she was actually interested in Lucius.

Hermione spent the next morning with Ginny, making sure that they both had everything they needed for the wedding; neither Ginny nor Hermione wanted to be making a last minute shopping run if they could avoid it. Neither Snape not Lucius was mentioned again, although Ginny found herself wondering how she would get Hermione and Snape to actually look at each other.
She decided to persuade Hermione to create another dress for dinner that night. It might work to get Snape’s attention.
Giving it a little thought, Hermione created a black velvet sheath, with cap sleeves. The only decoration on the entire dress was a thin trail of silver and green rhinestones that formed a diamond at her waist.
Ginny looked at it, and her first thought was that it was a little subtle. But when Hermione put it on, and pulled her hair back in a sweep, Ginny gasped. “Oh. Wow. You look fantastic, Hermione! It’s so sophisticated looking – and it suits you perfectly. The dress is clingy in just the right spots ! It’s wonderful! Except,” Ginny grinned, “They’ll all be looking at you again tonight, and not me!” Hermione smiled. Ginny wasn’t subtle. Nope, not at all. And, maybe, just maybe, she had a point about Snape. Maybe.
