Chapter 6
.
"He
what?" James asked nervously.
"You heard me!" Remus exclaimed. "I can't believe you thought he was just making it all up and-"
"Fuck!" James interrupted. "Fucking hell, what have I done?"
Remus sighed. "He tried to tell you several times, James, but you always pushed him away to be with either Lily or Harry."
James just stared at Remus with tears in his eyes. "So he went to stay with you?"
"For a while," Remus replied. "He made me swear to never tell you."
"Why?" James mumbled, although he figured he already knew the answer.
"Why do you think, James? He thought you didn't love him, anymore, remember?"
"Gods, I'm a fucking idiot," James muttered.
"You certainly were then," Remus agreed. "But then, so was I when it came to Sirius' imprisonment. I can't believe I ever thought he was capable of betraying you. Even after the way you'd treated him."
"How long did he stay with you?"
"Until he was taken to Azkaban," Remus answered weakly.
"You mean, he was living with you, and you still thought he had-"
"Yes, I'm an idiot, too, all right?" Remus said in frustration. "I wasn't even there half of the time. I didn't know what he was doing when I was gone. I just can't believe I ever thought he was-"
"Stop berating yourself, Remus," James mumbled tiredly. "You already said you and Sirius patched things up. He's never going to forgive me, and I can't blame him."
"You don't know that for sure, James."
James snorted and folded his arms across his chest. "What happened to the child?" James asked softly.
Remus bit his lip and studied James closely. "I don't know," he replied honestly. "Sirius was still pregnant when he went to Azkaban, and I don't know what happened. I wanted to ask him so many times after he escaped, but I always felt so guilty, and I also knew it would make him think of you, and I Merlin, I was always too nervous and scared of what it might do to him if I mentioned it."
"I understand," James sighed. "Gods, what a fucking mess. I doubt he'll even want anything to do with me after this."
Remus ran his fingers through his hair and sadly shook his head.
..
"I can't believe this is really happening," Harry said as he nervously watched Severus hand James a small bottle of the special potion.
"Neither can I," Severus sneered as he glared at James. "Are you sure you really want to bring the damn mutt back to life, Potter?"
"Severus, thank you so much for your great assistance in making this potion," Dumbledore said calmly as he steered the professor out of the room. "Why don't you go ahead and return to Hogwarts and keep an eye on the students for me? I don't know when exactly we shall be returning."
Severus scowled at the Headmaster andmmedmmed the door as he left the room.
"What if something goes wrong, and my dad gets stuck behind the veil?" Harry asked nervously.
James just stared at his son in shock. Even though he and Harry had talked some more in the past few weeks, James felt like his son was still holding a slight grudge against him, which he couldn't blame at all. In fact, James had been completely shocked and amazed that Harry was talking to him still. He figuthatthat Remus and Dumbledore had played a role in helping father and son to maintain some sort of a relationship, no matter how stilted it might be.
"Well, Harry, that is possible," the Headmaster answered honestly. "However, it's very unlikely. As soon as James falls behind the veil, he should be able to find Sirius quickly. As long as Sirius holds onto James' hand, then both should be able to fall through the veil again with no problem. The important thing to remember," Dumbledore said as he looked at James, "is to make sure that you don't let go of Sirius. After all, you're the one with the potion in you, and you can get through the veil because of the potion. Sirius needs a connection to you in order to get through the veil again."
James just nodded his head and nervously fingered the potion. He desperately wanted to see his husband again, but at the same time, he was scared of what Sirius might say and do.
"I still don't understand why Sirius can't just drink the potion," Harry said.
"He'll be too weak, probably," Remus spoke up. "People who are stuck behind thel arl are in some sort of a limbo initially. Based on what I've read, they're very weak, having no food or water. Chances are good, he wouldn't be able to even swallow the potion."
"How can they survive without food or water?" Harry asked.
"That's one of the many mysteries of the veil. As you know, they eventually leave the limbo and escape the living world completely," Dumbledore said sadly.
Harry bit his lip and glanced at his father.
"Are you ready, James?" Dumbledore asked quietly.
James nodded his head.
"As soon as you drink the potion, I will push you to the other side," Dumbledore said calmly. "Find Sirius as quickly as you can, and you will automatically be able to return through the veil to us. Do you have any questions?"
"No," James said softly. He carefully took the top off of the bottle and drank the awful-tasting liquid. James handed the empty bottle to Remus and then allowed Dumbledore to push him through the veil.
.
James landed with a thud. He looked up and realized that he was in a dimly lit room. After blinking his eyes several times, James slowly stood up and started walked around. He made his way down a narrow passageway and into a small room that contained several people, all of whom seemed to be in some sort of a deep sleep.
Biting his lip, James studied the people closely and then stopped dead in his tracks when he found someone with gorgeous long black hair. It was Sirius.
James knelt down and gently shook Sirius several times. Sirius moved slightly, but didn't open his eyes. Sighing, James brought his mouth to Sirius' ear and yelled out Sirius' name as loudly as he possibly could.
Sirius' eyes opened quickly, and he stared into James' concerned hazel eyes.
"James?" Sirius croaked in barely a whisper.
"Yes, it's me," James replied in relief. "I'm here to save you, Sirius."
"You're dead," Sirius said softly. He weakly lifted a hand and reached out to touch James' arm. "Aren't you?"
James just shook his head. "I'll explain later. You just have to do what I say for now, okay?"
Sirius nodded his head and watched as James stood up.
"Can you stand?" James asked.
Sirius slowly shook his head.
James knelt back down and easily lifted his husband into his arms. Sirius was so incredibly light that James wondered how he was even alive.
Sirius weakly held onto James as James stood up and quickly walked out of the room and down the dim passageway.
"Gods, I hope this works," James muttered as he came to the veil.
Sirius said nothing as he clung to James' neck.
With a deep breath, James plowed through the veil and crashed into his son, Dumbledore, and Remus. Everyone landed in a pile on the floor.<

"Sirius!" Harry shrieked as soon as he untangled himself and saw his godfather.
Sirius smiled weakly and tightly embraced his godson
