The next morning, the sun rose with a very clear sky and everyone was feeling joyful, including Mr. Filch, who was happier than usual. Miranda was chatting with a few of the women teachers, hoping that one teacher in particular would show up at the tables - Severus Snape.
She was hoping that he would walk into the hall and have breakfast. But it was nearly the end of breakfast, when it dawned on her that the Potion Master was not going to show up. She quickly excused herself and headed for his chamber and knocked on the door for several minutes.
“Dobby, come to me.” she spoke.
*pop*
“Dobby is here missus.” Dobby said; wearing his new clothes that Harry Potter gave him for Christmas.
“Did Severus Snape tell you that he was going to eat breakfast in his chambers this morning?” asked Miranda.
“No missus, just he would not be eating this morning. Is something wrong?” asked Dobby.
“No, Dobby. I just wanted to speak with him this morning. That is all, you may go now and thanks Dobby,” spoke Miranda. Dobby bowed and vanished with a pop. Miranda knew that Severus was not in his chamber, which means he's in the only other place possible - the potion room.
She rushed down the hallways towards the dungeons and shoved the doors open to find an empty potion room. She walked into the room and went into his office to find him not there. She heard footsteps coming into the room as she walked out of the office expecting to see Severus entering the room only to find Neville Longbottom standing there.
“Oh hello Neville,” Miranda said, as she smiled towards him.
“Hi Miranda, I was wondering if I could have some help with my potion idea that Professor Snape told us to consider for our finals at the end of the year.”
“Of course, what are you planning to do?” asked Miranda, as she went to a seat and waved Neville over.
“I was thinking about doing the werewolf potion but I think that is a bit too hard for someone like me so I want to do a sleep potion,” Neville said.
“That potion is not hard to do, Neville, but the werewolf potion is a very hard potion to do.”
“I know, that was why I switched from that to the sleeping potion. I went over the ingredients with Professor Sprout and Madame Pomfrey and they are in agreement with the possible potion for those who cannot sleep at night. I hope I can create it.” Neville stated.
“All right, let’s look at the ingredients you require for this potion.” They went to work on getting out the ingredients for the potion and Neville measured out how much of each ingredient he required and soon the potion was being brewed.
“How long does this potion need to brew before cooled and sipped, Neville?” Miranda asked of him.
“Half hour and then it can be drunk by the person who needs to have a good night sleep,” he replied as he barely looked up from his stirring of the potion. “I must continue to stir it for half an hour and then allowed to bubble for another half hour before blowing out the fire and allowing it to cool down.”
“Good, but I do have a question for you Neville?” asked Miranda.
“Yes,” Neville replied, looking up at her.
“Is this potion you are brewing a Dreamless sleep potion?”
“No, it is not. It is a sleep potion to help those who cannot get back to sleep after waking up in the middle of the night. Just a small goblet filled with this potion will make you return to sleep easily and awaken as you would have normally. It an offshoot of the Dreamless Sleep Potion,” Neville stated, calmly and without blinking.
Miranda nodded and went to sit at Snape’s desk. “Let me know when the potion is done cooling, Neville. We’ll take it to Madame Pomfrey and I’ll take the potion.”
Neville was shocked. “I was planning on taking it myself, Miranda. I would know if I did it properly if I took it myself.”
“No Neville, I’ll take it. Besides it will get my mind off of a certain someone,” Miranda said, as she looked at the young man.
Soon, Neville poured the cooled potion into a vial and they went to Madame Pomfrey where Miranda drank down the potion and fell fast asleep in the bed. It was about three hours later, Miranda awoke feeling very refreshed and Neville was very thrilled on how it worked out. He knew he would get a high grade for it and plus it would help all Wizards and Witches out with this new sleep potion.
Miranda walked back to Professor Snape’s classroom and checked his private office to see if he was there. But the professor was not there. She wondered where he had gone off too. She went and found Flitch. He told her where Professor Snape had gone off to – Diagon Ally to get more potion ingredients.
Miranda went to the Gryffindor Common room to see Neville. Neville was talking to Hermione Granger about the potion he made. She was quite interested in it; she stated something about getting it patent for marketing before someone else decides to do it themselves. “Neville, a word with you, I would like to talk to you about your potion project.”
“Sure, professor,” Neville said, picking up his notes on the potion.
“Please don’t call me professor; I’m not one, just a teacher’s aide, Neville.”
“What did you want to speak to me about?” Neville asked, as they walked out of the Gryffindor common room and down to the courtyard.
“I wish to ask you what are you going to do with your potion that you made for your project?” asked Miranda as she sat down on the stone wall.
“I want to patent it that’s for sure; I want to be the one who is credited for making the three hour sleep potion.” Neville said quite proudly.
“Well, I just got the patent information from the Ministry and I came looking for you so you can get it patented immediately,” Miranda stated as she handed him a piece of paper.
He read it over. “All I have to do is write down the ingredients, how long to brew and cool the potion and how much to administered so it would be done properly?” He looked up at Miranda. “And send them a sample of the potion?”
“That’s it and then send it to them, they should register your patent on it within a day of receiving it,” Miranda stated. “Or if you wish to get it done immediately, you can visit them personally and hand it to them but the fee for patenting it will go up by at least fifteen galleons, instead of the three galleons of letting them do it on their own.”
Neville pulled out his money purse and counted his coins. There was not much there, he only had five galleons and that was not much for the whole registration for the patent for the express version? “I don’t have enough galleons for the express patent, I’ll just have to deal with the slower way of getting the patent,”
“How many do you have?”
“Just five galleons,”
Miranda pulled out her coin purse and pulled out several galleons, placing them within his purse. “Now, you have enough to get it done express patent.”
“I’ll repay you for what you gave me, Miranda, when I get the first pay check on the potion,” Neville said, looking at her.
“I prefer if you do not. Just consider it a silent gift. If anyone found out about it, I will be thrown out of this school for giving money to a student, it is not allowed.”
“Thank you, Miranda.” Neville said as he hurried off to send the Owl to the patent office to get his potion registered.
Madame Pomfrey walked over to Miranda and looked at her. “That was a kind thing you did for him.”
“He did a ton of work on that potion and he deserves the credit for it and the patent. Now I must go. I have things to do.” Miranda said as she headed towards her room to finish her own school work.
