thank you for continuing to read my fan fiction, pitiful in the grammar and

Next Day…
Hermione gazed out the window, her
mind wandering instead of focusing on the problem on the board. Transfiguration
had been one of her favorite subjects but even that couldn’t hold her attention
today. After Severus had thrown all of them out of his classroom she had
immediately gone to the library. She hadn’t left all her habits behind after
all.
“Well Miss Granger I hope that
you’ve completed the assignment. This is your last year and you can’t spend it
all by looking out the window.”
Hermione turned her head to look at
her teacher. McGonagall had stopped right in front of her desk and her comment
had gotten the attention of the whole class. Her cheeks went hot. “Err no
professor I was just contemplating the problem and I couldn’t stare at the board
any longer and since the window just happened to be here, I thought that a
change in scenery might unlock the answer for me.”
“Nice footwork but I doubt that it
has helped. Has it?”
Hermione nodded her head vigorously.
It was a stretch but she hoped that it would at least buy her time to actually
solve the problem.
“We’ll see at the end of class then
won’t we Miss Granger?”
Hermione blew out the breath she had
been holding. End of class was only 15 minutes away. The head girl sunk down in
her seat and focused her mind on getting the answer right.
Ron Weasley looked at his friend.
Normally she wouldn’t have done anything to encourage a teacher’s attention but
twice today she had gotten just that. “Do you suppose that Hermione’s really
going to be all right?” He whispered to Harry.
The boy who lived blinked and looked
at Ron. “I don’t know Ron, but McGonagall will have our heads too if we don’t
get this done.” Ron nodded his head and bent it back towards his paper.
Severus Snape glanced around his
classroom. The fifth year Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw potions class had been going
smoothly, more smoothly than any Gryffindor and Slytherin class had. Speaking
of which he had to collect the assignments from yesterday and make sure that
detention was rewarded to those who hadn’t done it.
A loud bell announced the end of
class and Severus took a deep breath. He had to brace himself. He didn’t know
what Hermione had in store this class. As the fifth years filed out the seventh
years slowly sauntered in. After the six previous years they had acquired the
arrogance that Severus hated. A sneer firmly in place he leaned against his
desk. Waiting…and waiting. By his clock Hermione was late again.
Hermione ran as fast as she could.
Teasing Severus was one thing, pissing him off quite another. As she reached
the hallway she slowed to a walk. No need to let Snape think it was anything
but deliberate.
“Miss Granger if you cannot arrive
on time to class I suggest that you don’t even bother to come at all.”
Hermione repressed the shiver that
ran down her spine as his voice, full of menace and warning caressed her soul.
This was the man she had come to love. “I’m very sorry professor. I couldn’t
find where my assignment had gotten and I went back”
“Enough of your excuses. Shut the
door behind you and take your seat you’ve interrupted the class enough. And
thank you Miss Granger for reminding me to collect yesterday’s assignments.
Hand them in then please, anyone who doesn’t is getting detention tonight.”

The student body on mass rose from
their seats and handed in their thick scrolls. Hermione glanced down at her
bag. She had her assignment done but Snape didn’t know that. And hadn’t he just
said detention tonight? From the looks of it she would be the only one not to
hand in an assignment. It seemed too perfect an opportunity to pass up. “As I
was saying sir, I couldn’t find it.”
Severus felt the urge to scream. He
didn’t want to be alone with her. Well he did but he didn’t. Severus plastered
a sneer on his face. ‘Your ship is sunk.’ he thought and swallowed. “Well then
Miss Granger it seems you have an appointment tonight then don’t we?”
spanspan>Hermione averted her head so that
the class and Snape wouldn’t see her smile. “I’m very sorry sir. What time?”
“Eight o’clock. And Miss Granger,
don’t be late.”
Hermione sank into her seat,
enduring the sympathetic looks from the Gryffindor’s and the smirks from the
Slytherins. ‘And the battle was engaged.’ Hermione whispered to herself as she
pulled out her potions text. She looked up at Severus and saw him looking right
back at her. She titled her head and smirked. She licked her finger and made
the motion of adding a point to an imaginary scoreboard.
Snape gritted his teeth. He’d been
neatly trapped. After all how many times had Hermione not done her assignments?
No other occasions came to mind. Snape acknowledged the point by a slight bow
of his head. This maybe the beginning of the battle but the war had yet to be
started.
Potions was followed by Flying
lessons then Herbology(anyone know how to spell it properly?). Finally after a
quick lunch Ron and Harry headed off towards Divination while Hermione headed
off towards Arithmetic’s(how do you spell it?). The last class of the day was
Care of Magical Creatures with Hagrid.
“Well now it’s good ter see so many
of yer fine faces again. Seems to me that attendance has been down. ‘Bout time
it picked up again. ‘Nough said bout that. Today’s creature is one that many
fear because they don’t truly understand it. This here is an honohorse. They’re
very rare and hard to find. Most people only find them in Africa. Meet
Sleipner.”
Hermione looked with interest. It
was a weird animal indeed. It was the size of a Clydesdale but the coloring of
a zebra with the horns of a rhino on its face. It was streamlined and held no
extra fat on it only heavy muscles.
“Hagrid. Where did you get
Sleipner?”
For a moment Hagrid looked
embarrassed. “I was visiting a friend and he had Sleipner but couldn’t take
care of him. As it is Sleipner here was a runt and he wouldn’t have survived in
Africa so he’s here now where I can take care of him.”
Hermione gave Sleipner a careful
once over. She smelt no fear, which meant that the honohorse was not afraid of
her. In fact the honohorse turned its head, ears pricked and pranced over to
the fence where Hermione had been leaning. It leaned its head over, the
impressive horns right in Hermione’s view. “Uh Hagrid how much bigger will he
get?” Hermione asked her friend and teacher as she scratched the honohorse
behind its ear.
“Well now that would make a good
first assignment now wouldn’t it? Well get to it. Read your text and if you
can’t find the answer there look in the library. Tomorrow we’ll find out how to
stop one from charging.”
Hermione left the fence to sit down
on a tree stump. She sensed rather than saw Hagrid come over. “I never saw a
honohorse so taken with a human, witch or not. I think that you’ll do just fine
with Sleipner. Yep right fine.”
Harry and Ron rolled their eyes. They
knew Hagrid tended to be overprotective of his special foundlings, even if he
had to use them in class to justify their upkeep. Hermione simply smiled and
nodded. She didn’t know why the animal had taken a liking to her. After being
bitten most animals of any kind were wary of her and normally showed their fear
by aggression.
Too soon the class was over and
Hermione gave the honohorse one last scratch before following everyone into the
castle. Dinner wouldn’t be for another half hour which left her enough time to
shower and change.
The dinner table was packed with
good food and all the students piled it on their plates. Harry was waving a
drum stick and Ron pointing with a breadstick. Hermione calmly chewed and ate
her meal with all the manners she had.
“Bad luck getting detention on the
second day Hermione.”
Ron nodded his head in agreement.
His cheeks were full so he couldn’t speak.
“I don’t know what happened to it,
but I’m going to try and find out. I could have sworn I had left it on the table
in the common room, but when I checked it wasn’t there.”
“Don’t worry ‘Mione, you still have
the rest of the term to make up for the lost marks.”
“Ron finish what’s in your mouth.
Didn’t your mother ever tell you its not polite to talk with your mouth full?
Anyways it’s not the marks that’s worrying me.” At Ron and Harry’s incredulous
looks Hermione gave a wry smile. “Well alright the marks do matter but I want
to know who would take my assignment.”
While Ron and Harry looked at each
other Hermione crossed her fingers under the table hoping that they wouldn’t
find out about her lying.
“So what do you think that Snape
will make you do tonight?” Ron asked.
Hermione shrugged her shoulders. “I
haven’t a clue. There couldn’t be too much work to do. After all as you’ve all
pointed out to me. It is the second day at school so what could there possibly
be?”
As we have all learned you never ask
questions that you don’t want the answers to. In this case our potions
professor had cooked up a detention that would not allow our head girl to
continue her battle, but that is in the next part. Also up next, what happens
when Hermione meets up with Mrs. Norris on her way back from detention?
