Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter, nor any of the characters from the books or movies. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
AN: Well, I've been getting some positive feedback about my fic, so I guess I'm not terrible at this writing thing. Some people have been asking about the actual myth that I've taken my character from and I'll just lay it out here.
Hathor is the Egyptian goddess of music, dancing, sexuality and healing. She is known as several things in Egyptian mythology, among them: Mother and Guardian, Heaven and Hell, Sky and Heavens, Destroyer of Life, and Goddess of Fertility. Because of her many faceted talents she is known as both mother and daughter to Ra, the sun god, as well as wife and mother to Horus, the creator. The myth that I have shaped this story around concerns Ra and Hathor's warrior form Sekhmet.
The Myth: As Ra grew old he became distrustful of mankind and felt that they were out to destroy him and take away his place as god. So he called down Hathor using the Eye of Horus (or the Third Eye as it is sometimes called). He asked her to destroy mankind for him in the form of Sekhmet and she set out to do his bidding. Ra began to take pity on mankind and told Sekhmet to cease her destruction, but because she had tasted blood she refused to stop. Ra and the other gods had beer mixed with ocher (a red sand) and poured out onto the land before the next village she was to devour. Seeing the beer and thinking that it was blood Sekhmet began to drink and became drunk and forgot about her original purpose and reverted to her original form, thus saving mankind from destruction.
I used several different texts to ascertain this myth and needless to say each book had its own version. So I pieced together the main points that each retelling made and came up with a complete version of the myth. I've changed the myth somewhat for the story adding various historical elements which I have kept to the period and the spelling that they were meant for. There will be several Egyptian terms that I will be using, but I will provide a more than satisfactory spelling for each.
I hope this information clears up any questions you may have regarding the actual Egyptian myth.
And now on with the story.
Chapter 6: Links to Hogwarts
"SO what is it that you want to do exactly?" Draco asked, exasperated with Athyr's aloofness regarding her current situation.
"I want to have some fun. I know what will eventually be required of me, but before I have to face the demons of my past I want to enjoy the time that I have left of my life that is truly mine," she answered. "I assume that even Harry has had an opportunity to have some adventures while at school. Well, I haven't and since I've been given this chance; stained with the blood of my ancestors though it is, I will take it. It's been a very long time since I've been to England, and I've never been here in this lifetime so I would like to see the changes that the wizarding world has gone through in the past 1000 years or so."
"Was that the last time you were incarnated?" Harry asked.
"Hmm," Athyr cast amused eyes to the Gryffindor. "I was actually living one of my incarnations during the inception and building of Hogwarts. I even got to help place some of the original wards on the school. I wonder if they're still working?" Athyr murmured to herself.
"Wait a minute," Sirius piped in from his seat on the floor. "You lived during the creation of Hogwarts?" When Athyr nodded he continued his line of questions. "What were the founders like? Was Salazar Slytherin really the bastard that everyone says he was? Was Godric Gryffindor really a master of swordsmandship? Did the founders really kick Slytherin out because he only wanted to let pureblooded wizards and witches in?" Sirius wanted to continue and would have if not for Remus' hand clapping over his mouth.
"Feel free to answer all or none of those questions if you wish," Remus explained to Athyr whose mirthful gaze widened with the enormity of the questions that Sirius asked.
"Let's see. How about I pick a few and then go from there," she replied. "When I met the founders they had already begun building the school. In fact it was mostly completed when I met them," Athyr's eyes drooped and her voice took on a melodious tone as she remembered her past life at Hogwarts.
"The building was beautiful. Turrets and towers rose from this great gothic structure. I remembered that there was a vast forest on the grounds, which I gave my blessing to before finally leaving. I even planted a tree. It was a sycamore tree, but I poured within it protective magic so that it would survive," she broke of when Harry, Draco, Remus and Sirius gasped. "What?"
"The Whomping Willow!" They exclaimed simultaneously.
“The what--?" Athyr asked.
"The Whomping Willow," Draco explained. "That the name of the tree on the edge of the Forbidden Forest. It's relatively harmless for the most part. Unless you touch it and then it does it's damnedest to beat you to death."
"Well, I very well couldn't leave it with no way of protecting itself. It was actually meant to keep ogres and the like away from the school grounds. Usually creatures that large and stupid wouldn't worry about trying to push a tree out of the way or tear its limbs apart. Why are you blushing Harry?" Athyr asked glancing over at the boy now sporting a dull flush.
"Well during my second year I broke several of the trees arms," at Athyr's gasp of horror, Harry's blush got deeper. "My friend Ron and I crashed his dad's flying car into the tree and it proceeded to beat the car to a pulp before it finally fell out of the tree."
"I see," Athyr said contemplating Harry with narrowed eyes. Harry's flush grew darker as he quelled under her gaze. Finally Athyr laughed at Harry, her eyes opening wide.
"What's so funny?" he grumbled.
"I just find it so amusing that you're embarrassed about harming something I created in a past life. Do not worry Harry," Athyr assured the Boy Who Destroyed Voldemort. "I have no ill will to you for having crashed into the Whomping Willow. I gave the tree the ability to fight for itself so that it would have defenses even if I were unable to protect it. It behaved as it was supposed to. I am sorry that it almost killed you however."
"As for Salazar Slytherin," Athyr continued. "He was a rather off putting character. But I discovered that his hesitant nature hid a more passionate creature than he gave himself credit for." Athyr remembered her discovery of this and hugged herself as the memories of the nights she spent with Salazar playing over in her mind. She opened her eyes to continue and was shocked to find that the four gentlemen eyes had glazed over with lust. Then she realized what had happened. "I'm so sorry. I have forgotten that without the shields from my hemet netjer, that my stronger emotions often flow into others." Athyr thought about more calming images and concentrated on those and the men around her immediately calmed.
"How did you do that?" Draco asked, his voice still husky with left over passion.
"Well, because I am a goddess of fertility and sexuality, among many other things," Athyr explained, "I am capable of passing those feelings to others. I haven't had to guard against this in a while because my priestesses cast several barriers preventing the emotions from escaping. That, and the fact that I haven't left Dendera in several generations. I am out of practice in placing the shields upon myself."
"Now where was I. . . " Athyr mumbled. "Ah yes! Salazar. . ." the name came out as a caress and all four males tried to not shiver as the sound blazed a sultry trail down their spines. "Well, like all stuffy men, I suppose one could think that Salazar was a bastard. I mean, with all of that pent up passion. . .anyway, Salazar was just really broody. He did not want students attending Hogwarts that were not from magical families. Primarily, because he wanted to keep the wizarding world separated from the mortal. He and I talked constantly about this actually. I told him about how mortals and gods existed happily for the most part. However, he held is ois opinion. He had a brilliant mind and it was quite often that I was called in to moderate debates between himself and Godric."
Remus motioned for Athyr to pause in her explanation and he rose and went into the kitchen. Moments later he returned with tea and cookies for all. Placing his fare on the table he poured out and handed the plate of cookies to Athyr to take one. After she picking out a cookie, she took a sip of her tea, sighed in contentment and continued, "Godric and Salazar were absolute opposites. Sometimes, I thought they would come to blows because their arguments were so heated. And often when they did they would take out their swords and battle it out for a few hours until they had worn each other out. While, I'll admit that Godric was the better sword fighter, Salazar had cunning and he utilized all he had in trying to best him. Their fights were almost always declared an even draw." Another sip of tea and a bite of cookie, which Athyr rewarded with a delightful moan at the taste. "This is absolutely wonderful. . .I've never had something this good. What is this called?" she asked Remus.
"It's a cookie," Remus replied.
"Tell me you make these yourself," with Remus' nod Athyr stuffed the rest of the cookie in her mouth and grabbed another. "Good then you won't mind if I gorge myself on these then." She ate two more cookies (AN: I absolutely love cookies. So there will of course be tons of them in this story) and finished her cup of tea before continuing. "Salazar did part company with the other founders of the school, mostly over his views about the students that they would be admitting. But not entirely. That was another more personal matter," Athyr admitted with shuttered eyes. Harry knew that look. "While the founders did not part on the happiest of terms, Salazar did agree to keep his name as one of the founding members of the school. He also built that chamber, and left his pet snake to guard it hoping that one day a descendent of his would find it. Who knows why? I tried to tell him that not many people speak the language of snake, but he wouldn't listen to me. He made me promise not to tell the others and I obeyed him. . .only my heart knows why."
Wide eyed stares met Athyr as she glanced up from her cup of tea. "Now what's wrong?"
"You know about the Chamber of Secrets?" Harry asked.
"The what--?"
"The Chamber of Secrets. . .it was left by Salazar Slytherin and said to contain a monster that would rid the school of all of the undesirable students," Harry explained. "That monster turned out to be a 60 foot Basalisk, that could kill a muggle just by looking him in the eye."
"Hmmm. . .that's only supposed to happen if the wrong person attempts to control the Basalisk. A true descendent would know exactly how to keep the snake from killing mortals with a glance." Athyr no longer seemed concerned with the happenings from the chamber and her talking seemed to have taken more from her because she yawned again.
"I'm so tired. Is it possible that I can ask for somewhere to lie down for a bit? All this talking has taken a lot out of me," she covered her mouth as another yawn escaped. "And I would like to give you an opportunity to discuss me amongst yourselves. See what you make of the gos ths that came out of the fire." She smiled at the shocked glances she received. "Don't worry I would want to do the same thing. And I did actually, when Sirius showed up on my island."
"Follow me," Remus said as he stood and made his way upstairs. "We just got settled in, but we do have a guest room. Though our guest doesn't use it," Remus said loudly making Draco blush as Athyr crossed the room and followed him. At the top of the stairs he turned to the right and opened a door to a medium sized room. The floors were blond hardwood and there was a unlit fireplace. The bed however is what seemed to capture Athyr's attention. It was four-poster and took up much of the floor space in the room. It was draped with a thick white duvet and several fluffy pillows. Athyr made her way over to the bed and sat down.
"This feels wonderful. Thank you."
"No problem. If you need anything just let us know. We'll let you sleep," Remus made his way to the door and turned just before leaving, "Would you like someone to wake you up for lunch or dinner?"
"If its not to much trouble," Athyr had already begun pulling back the sheets and adjusting pillows.
"None at all." Remus quietly shut the door behind and made his way back downstairs to the living room.
AN: Well this was a nice filler chapter that gives you all some more info about my chara. The next chapter will begin pulling in more characters from the book. And we'll even have Dumbledore chime in about our resident goddess. Now all I need for you to do is hit that review button and tell me what you thought of this new chappie.
