Oliver nearly bowled Kitara over as he rushed through the main doors the following morning. He was bubbling with excitement.
"What's going on, Oliver?" Kitara asked.
"You haven't heard? Slytherin's back in the match. Their Seeker seems to have made a miraculous recovery- God bless whoever's responsible for that."
Kitara flushed, knowing precisely who was responsible for Draco's change of heart. Well, she thought, at least he got something out of that whole fiasco. She forced a smile for Oliver. "That's wonderful!"
Oliver swept her up in a bear hug, spinning her about before setting her down again. He kissed her forehead. "I've got to go tell the others. They're probably sleeping in, thinking we're not playing. Damn! Well, I'll see you in a bit, anyway. You'll walk me down to the Pitch, won't you?"
"Of course."
Something in her tone caught his attention. "Something wrong, Kit?"
Kitara opened her mouth to say no, but instead said, "I'll talk to you about it later. After the game." Well, just as well. She couldn't pretend forever.
Oliver eyed her strangely, but nodded, kissing her cheek. "Alright, then," he said, and dashed off to go rouse his teammates.
A few hours later, they were headed down to the Quidditch Pitch. Oliver was the only one of the Gryffindors who was truly thrilled about the upcoming game; the others grumbled beneath their breath when they thought he wasn't listening. Slytherin played hard, and they usually played dirty. A game against them was not something to relish.
When they reached the Pitch, the Slytherin team was already warming up. Oliver shot them a nasty look before ordering his team into the locker rooms to get changed and discuss the game. He turned to Kitara, who was not really paying attention to him. She could feel Draco's eyes on her.
"A kiss for good luck?" he said.
Kitara smiled distractedly, but when he leaned down to kiss her, she turned her head slightly, and his lips brushed her cheek instead. He paused, giving her a worried look, but Harry called to him from inside the locker room and he had to leave before he could say anything.
Kitara glanced up at the Slytherin team once more, deciding that she would not attend the game. It would be too strange to watch Oliver and Draco play at the same time; she would not even know which to cheer on. And she had a suspicion that most of her attention would be for Draco. She cursed herself. She and Oliver were all but over, but she owed him something, at least. As she turned to go, she heard a familiar voice behind her.
"Kitara, wait!"
Draco. Kitara ignored him and kept walking, and he pulled up alongside her, his broomstick hovering a foot or so off the ground. Show off.
"Look, we ought to talk," he said. Kitara kept her eyes fixed forward, refusing to acknowledge his presence. He sighed in frustration.
"This is ridiculous, Kitara. I don't really understand what's happened, or why you're so convinced that I've done something wrong. I think it's perfectly normal to consider—"
"Normal?" Kitara interrupted, finally looking at him. "You find yourself in an abandoned hallway kissing a girl you are quite obviously attracted to, and you just get up and leave? No, Draco, there's nothing strange about that at all."
Her comment shocked Draco, and he almost forgot to keep moving forward. He rushed to catch up with her, imploring, "I'm only saying—"
"This doesn't sound like an apology, Malfoy, and I recall telling you that I didn't want to hear anything else."
"Bloody-!"
"Good day, Mister Malfoy." Kitara quickened her pace, and Draco scowled at her back for a moment before shooting back up into the air over the Quidditch Pitch.
