Unexpected Obsessions
Chapter 6: Severus' Proposal
Severus had a lot of work to do before the 31st. They still had to prepare to return to Hogwarts, amongst other things. He also had to convince Hermione that she wanted to marry him. He knew deep in his heart she wouldn't say no, but there's always that little voice in your head telling you that no matter what you wish for, you won't have it. He finally got it to subside and hoped it wouldn't ever resurface. He left her the next morning, still asleep in bed. He wrote her a note telling her he was needed in London and should return shortly before dinner.
Hermione awoke to find a single black rose, no doubt from his garden, and a little note written in his elegant scrawl. After she read the note, she was a bit sad but at the same time happy that she would be left alone for the day. She decided after breakfast, she would spend the day floating on a raft in his pool reading a book about Dark Magic. He summoned it the night before letting her know that every question she had about the Dark Arts would be answered in that book. She realized that not all Dark Magic was bad, as she had been taught to believe while a student. That was why Severus wanted the DADA job very badly. He wanted to teach students to defend themselves as well as know and learn the good aspects of the Dark Arts. However, he knew deep in his heart that parents would never allow someone once suspected as a Death Eater to teach their students how to defend themselves. Let alone teach them aspects of the Dark Arts.
Hermione slipped into her swimsuit and transfigured a pool side chair into a raft. She began reading the book and soon lost track of time. Meanwhile, Severus was in Gringotts making a very hefty withdrawal. He exchanged the money to pounds and headed out into the dreaded world of muggles. Once outside, he made his way to an all familiar jeweler. The man was a wizard but operated a shop outside of Diagon Alley, because most of his loyal customers were muggles. Severus had known him for years, he being an old friend of his mother's. He was originally from Rome as she was and had attended Hogwarts at the same time as her. He'd often solicited his help in creating beautiful ps ofs of jewelry for his mother and sister over the years.
When he entered the elegant shop, Angelica, his daughter warmly welcomed him into the store. "Hello Severus. It's been a very long time." He took her hand and kissed it softly then inquired about her father. It was no secret that Angelica had always fancied Severus. He was a year younger than her, but she always tried her best to get him to notice her for more than an acquaintance. She even went as far as trying to get her parents to betroth them to one another, but his family wouldn't hear of it. In Severus' opinion, it was one of the smartest decisions his father had ever made. However, every year she would send him unwanted presents for his birthday and Christmas. He often gave them to Julia or the "heathens."
"Where may I find your father? I need him to create a very elegant piece for someone more precious to me than life. There, maybe you'll take the hint.
"Oh, well he is in the back. You may call upon him. He isn't busy.” She seemed a bit scorned, but he didn't mind. "Thank you. Always a pleasure Angelica."
"Likewise. Please, go ahead."
Severus walked through a door that no muggle would recognize. He found Romulus peering down at a piece of work that he must have just finished. "Romulus, what a pleasure to see you again."
"Oh, Severus. I didn't hear you come in. Please sit, sit." Severus sat on the stool he motioned to and quickly began telling him the reason of his visit. "I need you to create a one-of-a-kind original ring for me."
"And what is the occasion?"
"I'm proposing."
The man stood up and put his hand to his heart. "I never thought I'd live to see the day you came in requesting an engagement ring."
"I never thought I'd ever find someone worthy of marrying."
"Well tell me about her. It will help me imagine my creation."
"Well, her name is Hermione Granger. She is a highly intelligent witch. Perhaps, the most intelligent witch I've ever seen. She is slender, about five inches shorter than I, and she's more beautiful than any woman I've ever seen." His daughter had been listening and was shocked to hear Severus speak so openly about someone. He was a little bit apprehensive at first, but he understood Romulus' reasoning.
"What is her birth month?"
"September."
"Platinum or Gold?"
"Platinum."
"And your birth month is April so diamonds and sapphires will make a lovely ring. The platinum will enhance the already gorgeous stones. And I assume you want matching bands?"
"Yes of course. I shall need them by the 31st of this month. That is less than two weeks. Is it enough time?"
"More than enough Severus. I shall have them finished in two days."
"Very well then. Shall I pay you now?"
"Yes, I will send them to you by messenger. I understand you are staying at your manor and the journey back to London is not necessary."
"Thank you." Severus paid the man and made his way back to Diagon Alley. Once inside, he was spotted by Sirius and Remus who asked him to have a drink at the Leaky Cauldron with them. He politely refused and picked up a couple bottles of wine, and a few things from the Apothecary. He was going to help Hermione make her own personal products that evening. He was in such a good mood that he actually smiled at Sirius when bidding them a good day.
"What in bloody hell has gotten into him, Remus?"
"Don't tell me you can't recognize it? I can smell it. It's simply radiating off of him."
"Recognize what? And what can you smell?"
"Why he's in love Sirius. I can smell love, lust and desire coming from him."
"Well, unless he's suddenly developed a liking for werewolves or acquitted murderers, I'd say Hermione is the unlucky recipient."
"Now Sirius, be nice. I'm happy for Severus. He's been lonely far too long. And Hermione is a very lovely young lady. She deserves a good man."
"Favoring Severus now are you?"
"No, I'm just stating the obvious. If you'd open your eyes and forget about the past, you would see it too."
"Bollocks."

The rings arrived just as Romulus had promised. Hermione supposed they were potion ingredients that he had ordered while in London. She never questioned his reason for going into London so unexpectedly. He was thankful for it too. On the morning of their return to Hogwarts, Hermione wished she had a time-turner so she could stay here with Severus for another month. He reminded her that even though they both didn't want to leave, they had responsibilities to attend to. They had gotten Harry a clock for his birthday just like the one in Molly Weasley's kitchen. Harry had stated many times he loved that clock, and Severus had seen one in Diagon Alley the day he went shopping. On the way to Diagon Alley, Hermione told Severus she had to help Ginny prepare a few things and that she would meet him at the party. Harry was spending the day with Sirius and Remus after Ginny convinced him that she was needed to help her mother with a few details concerning Fred and Angelina's wedding.
They decided on getting a room at the Leaky Cauldron, and return to Hogwarts in the morning. After they checked in, Hermione left for Godric's Hollow. Ginny was expecting her at two and Severus had a few things left to prepare for the evening. He'd owled Harry and told him of his plan. Harry suggested that he propin tin the garden. It was in the side yard, and they should have a few minutes of privacy there. Severus instructed him to walk Hermione there at half past seven, and leave her alone. Harry was always forgetting something, so he needn't worry about an excuse to leave her.
At seven o'clock, Harry arrived home to find his house invaded with Weasley's and many old friends from Hogwarts. Neville was there with his girlfriend Susan Bones. Dean and Seamus were there with their flavors of the week. Colin and Dennis came, and luckily they didn't bring their camera. Even a few Slytherins showed up. But Harry was more surprised to see Albus there as well. He never left Hogwarts, and it made Harry feel very honored to have his former Headmaster at his party. Hermione walked around familiarizing herself with everyone until Harry saved her from repeating the past four years of her life for the tenth time. Everyone was interested in her relationship with Severus and wondered why he wasn't there yet. She hated to admit it, but she was a bit worried too.
"Harry, where are you taking me?" He grabbed her by the arm and was leading her to the side of the house.
"Don't tell me you honestly want to stand there listening to another boring story from our old classmates? I swear if I have to hear another person tell me how much I've changed, I'll kill myself!"
"Well, you have changed Harry. But in a good way."
"Thanks Hermione." He walked her over to the garden and they sat down on the bench he'd made for Ginny the summer they moved in. He caught a glimpse of Severus behind him, and he quickly excused himself to get something he'd forgotten.
"Honestly Harry. I thought you'd gotten over your forgetfulness."
"Some things never change I guess. I'll be right back. Just stay here."
Hermione sat there patiently waiting wondering more and more by the minute why Severus hadn't arrived yet. She was just about to go and look for Harry when Severus whispered into her ear. "And where do you think you're going?" His voice was seductively low, and Hermione went weak in her knees. His breath against her ear sent a shiver down her spine, and she was very thankful she was sitting down. She doubted she could stand if her life depended on it.
"Severus." She barely spoke, but he heard her clearly.
"Yes Hermione." Again, he breathed down her neck. He was very thankful she was wearing a simple summer dress.
"I.. I was.. I was wondering where you were." Her voice trembled as she spoke. She couldn't see him, only feel his warm breath against her neck.
"I've been here all along." He walked to the front of the bench and sat down beside her. "Hermione, please listen to what I have to say, and please don't interrupt. I doubt I could find the courage again if I were to stop." He took her left hand in his, and continued on. "There are so many things I want to tell you so many things I want to say, but I can't find the exact words to convey how I feel. I love you more than life itself, more than anything in this world. I know that my heart will forever belong to you, even in death I shall love no other. I always thought I'd die never knowing what true love was. Never feeling it in my heart. It wasn't until I met you that I realized I had a reason for living for the first time in many lonely years. You befriended me, and unknowingly stole my heart. I can't imagine spending one day without seeing your beautiful face. I can't imagine ever waking up without your silky arm curled around my waist. And I can't imagine ever making love and not being able to call out your name. This may seem sudden, but I know what I feel in my heart. I can only think of one thing that would make my life complete, and that is for you to become my wife."
Hermione had tears streaming down her cheeks, and her face was sore from smiling so long. She knew she wanted to marry Severus, and couldn't describe how honored she would be to become his wife. Their hands were trembling, but neither one knew whose were the cause. He knelt down on one knee, and pulled the ring box from his robe. When he spoke, his words were barely above a whisper and each one seemed to be going straight to her heart. "Hermione, please grant me the only wish I've ever had in my entire life. Please marry me."
"Oh Gods Severus. Yes, yes I'll marry you. Was there ever any doubt in your mind?" He slid the ring onto her finger, and pulled her into a soft, yet passionate kiss. Neither one could put words to what they were feeling in their hearts. He'd never felt so complete, and she'd never felt so safe and secure. From the courtyard, two sets of eyes were watching their friends, unknowingly holding their breath until they saw him slip the ring onto her finger. Then they held each other in a warm embrace, remembering what it felt like when they first got engaged. They only hoped their friends would find a love as deep and as meaningful as they had found.
"Hermione, I meant everything I said. I truly would be lost without you."
"I know Severus, I know." She pulled his head to hers again, and he tried to wipe the tears of joy from her face. She cupped his face and later on he would deny it, but she saw the tiniest tear in his eye. They heard a soft congratulations from the direction of the courtyard, and stood only to find Harry and Ginny watching them intensely. Everyone at that party knew what had taken place when Harry suggested they make a toast to his newly engaged friends. Everyone was happy for them especially Albus. He had hoped their holiday would bring them closer, and as usual, he was right. All of the Weasley boys threatened Severus to never break her heart, and she threatened them not to pull any pranks at their wedding. Molly was so happy she was crying alongside Ginny. Harry shook Severus' hand and congratulated him. He offered him any advice he may need about dealing with Hermione.
Severus was completely surprised when Sirius shook his hand and patted him on the back. He nearly fainted out of shock. Remus also showed his praise and wished them only the best. After an hour of mingling and sneaking brief kisses between talks, Severus and Hermione apparated bac the their room at the Leaky Cauldron. He wanted to make love to her and reassure her that she was the only woman he desired. He slowly undressed her while preparing a relaxing bath.
"Severus, I never could have imagined that by me simply accepting the offer from Albus I would be engaged to you in less than two months."
"Is that bad dear?"
"Heavens no. My life finally has meaning. I finally feel like I'm being rewarded for all my hard work."
"I am the one being rewarded. Not you."
"Yes I am. Don't ever doubt yourself. You're a terrific man, and you'll make a perfect husband." She slipped into the tub, and he washed her from head to toe. After drying off her body, he picked her up and wrapped her in a fluffy towel. He carried her into the bedroom and proceeded to massage every inch of her body. She'd never felt so relaxed and so aroused in all her life. He rolled her over and trailed light kisses along her body until she was begging him for more.
"Severus, I just want you to make love to me. Please. Nothing more or less. Just make love to me."
"As you wish." He slipped his shoes and socks off, then undid his trousers and shirt. She laid on the bed, patiently awaiting the pleasures he would bring to her. Gazing down to her ring, she admired his taste. He told her of it's originality and what it symbolized for them. In the center was a gorgeous square cut sapphire, surrounded by tiny diamonds. Embedded in the band was a pattern of sapphires and diamonds. After removing his trousers, shirt and boxers, he slid up on top of her, and prepared her body for his entrance. He inserted one smooth finger which elicited a moan from her sweet lips.
"More Severus. More."
"Impatient are we?" He was teasing her bud with his fingers which only resulted in her moaning more and more, begging for him to enter her. He suckled her ample breast, and bit her nipple ever so lightly. She was moaning loudly and her hips were bucking at every thrust of his finger. After he teased her to his satisfaction, he slid his length deep inside of her. They moved in a rhythm all of their own, and when their climaxes peaked, they swore the earth shook. Severus never had ever felt anything half as intense, not even when they'd made love before. And Hermione thought it was physically impossible for her orgasm to feel that good or last that long. He fell on top of her, spent, trying to recover from the most passionate experience in his entire life. Hermione held him to her chest, and realized she needed to ask something of her new fiancé. "Severus, I have but one request."
He gazed up into her lustful eyes, and asked her what it was. "I want you to never let me go. No matter what happens in our lives, never shut me out nor send me away. I can handle many things in this world, and have handled many things. But my heart would simply shatter if you were to leave me."
Hermione, I vow to never leave you. I wouldn't dream of shutting you out of my life. I have done many inane things in my life, however I will never be that foolish. I just ask one thing of you. Please don't break my heart. That's all I wish for." She replied by kissing him tenderly, and repeating over and over, "I won't Severus. I simply love you too much."
