Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter, nor any of the characters from the books or movies. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
Disclaimer: I don’t own the characters or the places, JKR does...um...the scenarios
aren’t really mine either x.x; actually this fic was inspired by another one I read
called Snape’s Redemption...very, very good fic...I hope it isn’t too much the same
and that it’s not horrifically obvious that I was inspired by the fic...but...anyway,
thanks to Juliet fer being my inspiration and sorry if this is too much like yours...
And on to the Author’s Note: I didn’t really wanna write this chapter...but kinda had
to...I was procrastinating and have been wondering daily and almost nightly how to do
the next chapter and finally decided to sit down and write this one so I could figure
it out...but...here it is...
Chapter Six:
Absolutely horrified by this new information, and completely lost in her own
train of thought, Hermione momentarily wondered how it was she found herself in front
of Number Four, Privet Drive. But she didn’t stop to ponder very long. Truly not
caring about very much at all for the moment, she ran up to the front door and started
pounding on it. It didn’t take very long for shouting to ensue from inside. There was
rumbling, more shouting, then finally the door opened.
Harry stood there, looking slightly winded, and behind him was a very large man.
“Who the bloody hell--”
“Shut up!” Harry yelled back, stepping outside and slamming the door. He looked
down at Hermione. “What is it?”
“Harry...” Hermione paused; again, she wasn’t sure what to say...why was this so
hard? “Harry, Number Twelve is...there are Death Eaters coming and going from it.”
Harry frowned, and it looked almost as if he were holding back a glare. “Death
Eaters?”
“Yes...Lucius Malfoy and Bellatrix Lestrange, for certain...”
“Good.”
“G...good?” Hermione stared up into Harry’s green eyes uncertainly. He wasn’t
looking at her though, instead he was staring off, a familiar frown etched into his
mouth.
“Yes. I can find out from them where Snape is and then finish them off before
getting the locket.”
“No, Harry...no, that’s not...that’s completely...”
“Completely what, Hermione?” Harry demanded, turning his gaze to her. This time
he didn’t keep himself from glaring at her.
“Ir...irrational...”
“Irrational?” Harry repeated, taking a step toward her. Hermione took a step
back, keeping a very close and careful eye on him. “What part of any of this has been
rational, Hermione? Was it rational that Voldemort come and kill my mum and dad? Was
it rational to keep me here in this bleeding house for ten years? Was it rational for
Snape to kill Dumbledore?!”
Hermione gulped back fear before timidly answering, “yes...”
Perhaps Harry was shocked by her response, or perhaps he was so instantly angry
that it stunned him, but he only stared at her incredulously. He opened his mouth a
moment, then closed it as if he changed his mind about what he was going to say, or
maybe it was that he had nothing to say...but Hermione cowed under his hateful glare.
In all his attempts at speech, Harry only managed one word: how.
Again, Hermione swallowed back her fear of him to talk. “Voldemort only followed
logical...logical deduction...to...to assure he was unchallenged...” she said quietly,
taking another step back as Harry gained a murderous glare. “Pro..Professor Dumbledore
insured...that you stay here...because it assured...safety...” she took another step
back. Harry wasn’t advancing, but at the moment she doubted her previous thoughts that
stated he wouldn’t do her physical harm...she paused in her broken speech, teetering
with debate of whether to answer the last bit.
“And Snape?” Harry demanded. Clearly he had gained the ability to talk again.
“He...he had to...”
“HE DID NOT!”
Hermione took several steps back this time, making sure there was plenty of
space between them. “Harry...he did...Professor Dumbledore knew it would
happen...he...he set everything up last year for it...”
“HOW DARE YOU EVEN PAUSE TO THINK THAT HERMIONE!” Harry shouted.
“Harry, please...” Hermione said, her voice shaking and tears burning her eyes.
For the moment, she was truly afraid of what he might do.
“NO HERMIONE! THAT IS ONE STEP TOO FAR! I TOOK IT IN STRIDES WHEN YOU BACKED FOR
HIM OVER THE PAST SIX YEARS BUT NO MORE!” Venom dripped of his voice and Hermione
wished that she could disappear into the robes she wasn’t wearing. Instead she
clutched the top of her shirt as if that could save her from the wrath that was sure
to come. When Harry continued he was no longer shouting, instead he spoke softly,
almost as if he felt too cold towards her to yell. “No, Hermione, that’s one step too
far. The bastard murdered our headmaster and yet you still find it within yourself to
proclaim his innocence. No.” He shook his head. “Get out of here, Hermione. We can do
this without you.”
“Harry...” Hermione found that she didn’t know what to say...this had been the
very last thing she expected from Harry. Something inside her froze completely and
words failed her, but tears fell freely from her eyes.
“No, Hermione.” His voice was as hard as rock when he spoke and his eyes as cold
as ice. “Get out of here, I don’t want to see you again.”
“Harry, please...” There was more than a pleading note in her trembling
voice...in fact, her entire body seemed to be shaking.
“No.” And without another word, within another icy glare, he turned back into
the house, slamming the door again behind him.
Hermione stood staring through her tears at the door. She wanted to run after
him, to throw herself into his arms and beg him to take it back. But she couldn’t
move...she was just left standing in front of the closed door, her heart beating madly
in her chest, tears flooding her cheeks. After what seemed like an eternity of staring
at the door, Hermione managed to take a step back, then turn around. Then she ran...
She didn’t know where she was going, barely took notice to what was around her.
She could hear her heart pounding into her ears and that seemed to blot out everything
else. When she could no longer draw breath and she had a stitch in her side that
threatened to tear her torso in two she collapsed near a neatly trimmed hedgerow and
sobbed. She’d done it this time...she’d just lost...everything...and for what...?
Instead of answering herself she cried into her arms until tears no longer fell...but
she still felt like crying...
No...she had to somehow...she had to get them back...she would...she’d get Harry
back...he couldn’t...he just couldn’t shut her out like that...She’d...she’d do
something...
Slowly she climbed to her feet. Her eyes were dry and try as she might she
couldn’t blink moisture into them...oh well...she sighed and took a deep, shaking
breath before turning on the spot and Apparating away from Surrey.
With a crack she appeared facing the street in front of her house, not her
bedroom like she had hoped...she sighed, then stiffened suddenly. There was something
very wrong...the air prickled with magic. She looked around quickly and a green glow
caught her eye. Very slowly she turned to where the glow was brightest and found that
her entire house was bathed in it...
