Chapter 6
Draco woke that next morning, feeling well rested and content. He remembered the most fantastic dream. With a relaxed smile, he stretched, only to find he was not alone in the bed. Turning, he found himself gazing at a head full of riotous cinnamon curls and a face which made his heart stutter.
Hermione Granger was lying in his arms, sleeping like a kitten. Her head rested on his arm and she was cuddled next to him with a relaxed expression. He hated to wake her, but he didn’t think she’d want anyone to find them like this. He knew Ginevra Weasley had a tendency to come join Hermione for breakfast in the Head Students study on Sundays.
Part of him wanted to ignore the warning bells going off in his head, but logic demanded he wake her and apprise her of their situation. An emotional ache centered in his heart when he considered that what had transpired between them was coming to a close.
Gently, reaching out, he traced the line of her jaw with his index finger, willing her to open her beautiful eyes and meet his gaze. When she sighed and stretched, pressing her naked body closer to his, he groaned, feeling his erection spring back to life in demand to pick up where they had left off the night before. “Oh, bugger! Hermione, you’re going to be the death of me yet!” He chided softly.
Her eyes flew open and she stared at him in shocked surprise. He worried for a split second that perhaps she had forgotten what had transpired between them the night before and he waited for her outraged scream. Instead, his heart melted when she smiled and cuddled closer to him. “Good morning.” She yawned. “Did you sleep well?”
He nodded and gently tugged a stray curl away from her face. “Yes. Too well, I’m afraid. We’ve very nearly overslept. You’re in danger of being found out by your friends.”
He waited for her to pull away and start making excuses as to why he had best leave before anyone came. Instead he found himself filled with relieved happiness, when she stretched, wrapping her arms around his neck and moving so she was over him. His eyes widened in shocked silence when he felt her grip his semi-erect cock and tug on it gently.
“Actually,” she spoke softly as she reached under her pillow and pulled out her wand. “I don’t think we’ll be disturbed at all.” Pointing the wand at her door, she locked and warded it, and then cast a silencing spell to keep any sound they made from escaping.
With a look of determination, she sat the wand on the bedside table before leaning down to place a gentle kiss to Draco’s lips. “We have unfinished business, you and I.” she said softly as she moved to lower herself onto his hardness.
Gasping, Draco flexed his hips in ecstasy. “Really, Granger?” he groaned with a playful smile forming on his lips. “And what business might that be?”
She took his lips then in a demanding, possessive kiss before breaking away and smiling down at him. “Pleasure, Malfoy. It’s all about pleasure. Last night was amazing, but I fear I may be in need of much more.”
She tilted her hips as she spoke, taking him further into herself and he felt the walls of her cervix tightening around him as the beginnings of the first climax started to build within her. Her moan spurred him into action.
Embracing her, he flipped them so he was atop and began thrusting faster and deeper within her; his moans joining hers as they reached completion together. When they were spent, he fell to the bed beside her and pulled her tighter to him. As he smoothed her hair out of her face, he thought of the night before and the idiot he had been. The spell was broken, he felt that. However, he still found he had no will to leave her.
Suddenly, a deep physical pain assailed him and he had to take a deep breath to force it back. It had been as if his heart had nearly broken inside his chest at just the thought of leaving her. It was unlike any pain he had ever felt before. Just the thought of leaving her to go to his own rooms to get dressed had caused it.
He sighed and looked down at the beautiful witch curled up contentedly in his arms. He wondered if she felt the same. Surely not? She had just done what she had to help him the night before, right?
Clearing his throat, he asked, “Hermione? Do you think we should get dressed and go down to breakfast with our houses?”
For a moment, she just lay there, unmoving in his arms. Then, with a sigh, she slowly pushed away from him, giving him a tender smile, “Yes, I suppose we should.” But even as she said the words, the idea of being away from him made it difficult for her to breathe.
She tried to tell herself it was only a hesitancy to walk away from what they had shared moments before. But as she rose from the bed, the pain got worse and she only made it a few steps away from the bed before she turned back to look at him with a pained expression which was mirrored on his own face.
“Draco,” her voice trembled with worry. “I think something is very wrong.” Before she even reached for him, he was out of the bed and at her side.
His arms wrapped around her and she immediately felt the pain dissipate. Looking up into his face she saw he seemed better as well. “Oh no.” she whispered softly. “I think I misjudged the potion. It wasn’t the one I believed it to be”
Draco offered her a sad smile. “I was afraid of that.” He let her go but stayed there beside her as he asked, “What do we do now?”
Hermione shook her head. “Well, we can go to the Headmaster. But if this is what I think it is,” She closed her eyes as she spoke, “There’s nothing anyone can do.”
Taking the trembling witch back into his embrace, Draco rested his cheek against the top of Hermione’s head. “Breathe, beloved. Just breathe and try to stay calm.” He stared out the window of Hermione’s room at nothing in particular as he added, “If there is a way to break this, Dumbledore will know…” Even as he spoke the words for her benefit, a pain sliced again through his heart and he silently sent up a prayer that no cure existed.
As they made their way to Dumbledore’s office, Hermione fought to keep her tears at bay. She knew what she was feeling was a side effect of the potion. Under normal circumstances, she would never want to be tied to Malfoy. Just the thought of being tied to the family scared the very wits out of her.
But more than that, deeper still, was a longing to be important to the blond wizard beside her. She wanted to mean something to him. Her heart ached at how easily he had agreed to go to Dumbledore; even seemed anxious to have it done.
When they reached the entry, she mumbled the newest password: “Lemon-mint parfait.”
Immediately, the doorway opened and with a painful glance in Draco’s direction, Hermione started up the steps. He followed closely behind her without any words.
As they entered the office, Dumbledore looked from his companions to them. His eyes twinkled with merriment as he rose to greet them. “Miss Granger! Mr. Malfoy, How convenient of the two of you to join us.” As he spoke, he glanced meaningfully over the rim of his crescent moon glasses toward the two men who still sat with their backs to the two newcomers.
Hermione stopped suddenly as she saw the backs of the two wizards who sat before the headmaster. Swallowing tightly, she looked back at Draco, who stood frozen, staring at the back of his father’s head.
As if knowing the two youngsters were staring at them, Lucius turned to face them. Hermione took an involuntary step backwards only to have Draco push himself in front of her, as if to shield her from his father’s unwelcome glare. “Father,” he spoke softly. “This is not her fault.”
Lucius surprised him then by smiling. “Of course it isn’t.” he leaned back in his chair so as to make eye contact with Hermione. “Miss Granger, I bear you no ill will, my dear.”
He then turned toward the other occupant in the room. “We all know where the blame lies.” He growled. “Severus Snape, you could have killed my son.”
The black haired wizard had yet to turn to face them, but Hermione knew instantly it was he in the chair. Moving around Draco, she closed the distance between them. “Why? Professor, all we did was try to help you. What possessed you to do this to us?”
Dumbledore spoke then, “I have been trying to understand his logic myself. It makes absolutely no sense to me. Unless it was something the hand of fate wanted to see done.”
Lucius sighed and sat back in the chair, fondling his cane as if lost in thought. Draco watched his father with a growing sense of confusion. He already knew what had transpired. That much was clear. But his reactions were nothing like he would have believed they’d be.
Severus chose that moment to answer Hermione. His voice was low and Hermione could barely make out his words. “I have never been held in high regard. There is little notable about me her at Hogwarts aside from my talent with Potions.” His eyes met and held Hermione’s then as he continued. “I felt threatened by the two of you moving so easily into my position and trying to take my place.
“It was foolish, I realize this fact now. But I know of the feelings Draco tries so hard to deny and I decided a perfect revenge would be for those very feelings to come to light.” He looked from her to Draco as he said this last. “I had no idea the two of you would consummate these emotions before I would be able to administer the antidote.”
Hermione leaned heavily against Dumbledore’s desk as she realized what Snape was saying. “Antidote?” the color drained from her face as she looked from him to Draco. “So, I’m right. The potion wasn’t the one that can be cured from mere sex. It’s the one that—.” Her words broke off on a sob.
Lucius chose that moment to stand and although he looked as haughty as ever, his expression was angled toward Snape as he handed Hermione his hanky. “Yes, my dear. I fear, you have inadvertently become a new member of our family.” He simply smiled at her when she turned shocked eyes in his direction. “Don’t act so surprised, Miss Granger. In this circumstance, I think it only fitting,” he turned toward Dumbledore, “that we explain to her about my position in the war, as well. Don’t you agree, Albus?”
Dumbledore nodded and looked to Hermione. “Miss Granger, Mr. Malfoy and his son are also members of the Order. But they are under even deeper cover than Severus, because of their relationship with Lucius’ sister-in-law.”
Hermione cringed at the mention of Bellatrix and Draco couldn’t stop his smirk. “You’re the lucky one! I have to pretend to like the woman!”
The witch who had just become his lover turned to look at him with barely concealed sarcasm. “But you’re such a good actor, Malfoy. Apparently you’ve been pretending to hate me for a while now.”
Lucius chuckled. “Yes, I daresay there’ll never be a dull moment with you in the family.”
Hermione and Draco shared a perplexed look before she turned to Snape. “Is there no way out of this then?” She was just holding on to a calm façade, but it began to slip when Severus wouldn’t even look at her. “Am I to understand that there is no other option for us than to get married and be together?”
When her professor still refused to meet her gaze, but simply nodded, she lost her temper and charged him. The resounding slap was loud enough that it echoed through the room. The three other wizards stood at attention just in case Severus thought to retaliate. But he simply remained in his seat and closed his eyes.
“I trusted you, professor. I believed in you when no one else did and I even fancied myself in love with you for a time.” She broke off on a sob and held her hand to her mouth to keep herself from screaming. “I don’t know why! It’s true what they say about you. You’re nothing more than an unfeeling greasy black bat.” She looked back at Dumbledore and Lucius, then Draco before she turned and left as quickly as she could.
Draco started after her but was stopped by his father. “Let her go, son. She needs time to come to terms with all of this. It would be better for her to be able to gather her thoughts alone.” He offered his son a small smile. “She’ll come around when she is ready.”
Draco pulled away from Lucius and stared at him hard for a moment before he spoke. “That’s just it, Father. Something I’ve noticed about Hermione is the fact that everyone around her expects her to carry the burden; even Potter and Weasel. No one ever offers to let her lean on them.” He turned away and started out of Dumbledore’s office even as he finished speaking. “Forgive me if I refuse to make that same mistake.”
