Chapter Five
Anexia
They were swarming around her. Long, hairy legs, greedy crimson eyes, gnashing teeth. She tried to run, tried to move, but she was trapped. There was nothing to do except watch as the spiders crawled over her…
Anexia woke with a start. Sweat beaded on her forehead and her heart hammered dutifully in her chest. But she wasn’t in the forest. She wasn’t even outside. Anexia sat up and looked around the room. The white walls of the infirmary were dulled in the darkness. Frosted glass windows lined over the rows of beds, with their heavy divider curtains. A small snort to her side caused Anexia to start, and she was relieved to see Lily sitting in a chair beside her bed, even though the red head was sound asleep. Anexia continued to gaze around the room until her eyes landed on the bed side table. A note that read “Feel Better Soon! Love, Lily” had been taped to a chocolate frog. But what caught her attention the most was the half dozen blood red roses that had been set behind the frog, tied together with a black ribbon. Anexia reached for the roses, which had been meticulously stripped of thorns. She flipped over the card strung through the ribbon, and her heart skipped a beat.
“I’m sorry. Forgive me? -Sirius” Anexia read over the note several more times before lifting the flowers to her nose. Of course she forgave him-- there was no question of it in her mind. But how could he… why… roses? Anexia reached over and prodded Lily rather unceremoniously in her side. Lily woke with a start. “Anexia, thank God. I was so worried about you.” Lily canted her head to the side slightly at the brilliantly crimson roses. “Where did you get those?” Anexia silently tugged at the slip of parchment so that it tore from the ribbon and handed it to Lily. But instead of swooning, like Lily normally would have at such a romantic notion, the redhead frowned. “Anexia, what happened back there? Sirius won’t tell us a thing.”
Anexia sighed, and recounted the adventure from hours before, including the kiss that her and Sirius had shared. “…I mean, these were nothing like the creepy little buggars you find in corners. These monsters were huge, at least the size of a car. I couldn’t see anything but those horrible spiders… and then Sirius wrapped his arms around me and… God, Lily, I think he told me he loved me. But I was so scared, I must have imagined it, because then I must have passed out.” She looked around the infirmary again. “How did I get here?”
“Sirius carried you.” Lily said. “He refused to let anyone touch you until he saw that you were safely here.” Anexia felt her cheeks flush, and she looked back down at her roses as the notion of Sirius carrying her across the grounds. Then she gasped. “Does Richard know?” Lily gnawed at her lower lip. “I don’t think so… he and Remus were still in the forest when you were brought here.”
Anexia exhaled slowly, her mind racing. “Lily, he can’t know… you know how his temper is… He would murder Sirius if he found out he touched me, let alone kissed me.” Her voice had lowered to a whisper. For some reason, her eyes were misting. She felt like she was going to cry. “Lily, I’m so scared.” Anexia tried to hide a sob, but it was too late; several hot tears had already tumbled down her cheeks. “I don’t know what to do…” Silently, Lily crawled onto the bed next to her friend, and let Anexia cry on her shoulder.
“Anexia,” Lily murmured. “Everything will work out fine. I promise. Sirius obviously cares about you, which is good. Richard can be taken care of.” Lily tenderly ran her hand through Anexia’s hair as only a best friend could. “You shouldn’t have to live in fear of him. It’s not right. Tomorrow, we can go to Professor McGonagall, and we’ll tell her that…”
But Anexia was already shaking her head. She didn’t know what she was going to do, but involving a professor was most certainly not it.
