Chapter 6: A Summon From McGonagall
The next
morning Professor McGonagall summoned both girls to her office. She had heard
from Lavender Brown that Emily had a horrible nightmare and she needed to make
sure that she was alright. When she heard the knock she told them to enter. The
door opened and in walked not the two girls, but Severus.
“Minerva, I was
hoping that you could help me on something,” he told her.
McGonagall felt like cursing him, but she was willing to
hear him out.
“What, Severus,”
she said with some patience.
“Well, I’ve got a
Lupin in my class and I think that she really needs to be resorted.”
McGonagall looked at him, shocked. He never said anything
about how he felt about students and what house they were in.
“And why?”
“Because Lupin is
far to smart to be in Gryffindor,” Snape explained. “And I think that she needs
to be in Ravenclaw.”
McGonagall grinned at him.
“Are you really
worried about that or are you upset about what happened in Potions?” she asked
him.
He looked at her.
“Oh come on, we
know that Mr. Malfoy is faking his injury so that he gains all this sympathy
and gets Hagrid fired,” she went on. “Miss Lupin showed great restraint in not
showing Mr. Malfoy for what he was, a fake.”
Snape stiffened and she knew that he hated his students
being talked about.
“Severus, I’m
telling you that boy is going to kill us all,” she warned. “You watch him and I
mean closely. As for being resorted, I’ll talk to the Headmaster about that.”
“Thanks, Minerva.”
And he left her alone.
Five minutes
later both Helga and Emily appeared in her office. She offered them a cookie,
but they turned her down. She suddenly got the impression that Dumbledore would
be laughing if he could see her now.
“Miss Snape, we
haven’t really gotten the chance to get to know each other so I’ll introduce
myself. I’m Professor Minerva McGonagall and I’m your Head of House,” she said.
“And as Head of House, it’s my job to find out if there something going on in
my house. Lavender has informed me that you had a horrible nightmare and I want
to know if you wish to talk about it.”
Emily looked at her, but shook her head.
“Miss Snape, please
don’t act like your father,” she said sharply. “You need to tell me so that I
can help.”
Her voice was almost pleading.
“No, I don’t want
to talk about it,” Emily said, acting just like her father.
Professor McGonagall looked at Helga, who shrugged her
shoulder.
“Can I please head
off to Double Potions?” she asked.
“Ya okay,”
McGonagall said, knowing that she wasn’t going to get an answer out of her.
“Thanks.”
And she picked up her bags and left. As soon as the door
closed they waited and McGonagall started on Helga.
“You’ve lived with
her why is she having these nightmares?”
Helga sighed.
“She had an abusive
boyfriend and he almost rapped her one time,” Helga explained. “Her father
walked in and caught her screaming for dear life. I think he almost went to
Azkaban for that. He left her alone after my godfather almost used the Killing
Curse on him. Please, Professor, don’t tell her that I said anything to her.”
McGonagall promised.
“Thanks,” she said.
“I have to head off to History of Magic.”
And she too grabbed her bag and then left.
When she
arrived in History of Magic Professor Binns was to preoccupied with his lecture
to even notice that Helga had walked in late. She sat down and taking out her
ink, quill, and parchment, she got to work. However, she didn’t fully pay
attention in class because she was too busy worrying about her sister. She knew
that her sister didn’t like talking about what happened, but deep inside she
knew that McGonagall had a point. She really needed to talk about what happened
so that she could move on. By the time the class ended, she saw that she hadn’t
taken a single note.
Helga didn’t
see her sister at lunch when she arrived. She asked a fourth year if she had
been in Double Potions, but he told her that she hadn’t even shown up. Of
course Harry and Ron had an opinion about her not showing up.
“I wouldn’t put too
much into it, Helga,” Harry said. “She’s just going to get daddy to bail her
out and she won’t even get into trouble.”
Helga bit her lip to keep from retorting. She sat down and
just ate her lunch.
When the
bell rang she hurried off to The Study of Ancient Runes and tried to drive her
sister from her mind, but she just couldn’t. Like with History of Magic, she
didn’t write a single note in the class and the Professor got the impression
that something was bothering her. However, when the bell rang, she disappeared
before she could corner her. Helga headed to pitch her bag and had just left
the Gryffindor common room when she was cornered by Professor Snape.
“Have you seen the
dunderhead that shares my last name?” he asked; his tone rude.
“No sir and I’m worried,” Helga said.
Snape muttered something that thanks to some of her father’s
traits she was able to hear. He had called her a lazy witch.
“Look, sir, if I
see her I’ll tell her that you want her.”
“Thank you, Miss
Lupin.”
And he stalked off.
When Helga
arrived for dinner she heard Pavarti tell Lavender that Emily was in the girl’s
bathroom all day and wanted to be left alone.
“She’s crying,”
Pavarti said.
“Oh great, now all
we need is a mountain troll and everything will be like in our first year.”
Helga sighed and started on her food.
“Headmaster,” said
Argus Filch, who came running in as fast as he could, his cat behind him.
Everyone looked at him.
“What’s wrong,
Argus?”
“There’s something
on the fourth floor,” he told him. “I don’t know what it is, but I can tell
that it isn’t supposed to be here.”
“Percy,” Dumbledore
called.
Percy got up.
“Go with Mr. Filch
and find out what’s on the fourth floor. Let me know as soon as possible.”
“Yes, sir,” Percy
said.
And he went with Filch.
“Oh my god, I hope
it’s not Sirius Black,” said a first year.
“I hope not either,”
said Harry.
Ten minutes later Percy ran in.
“It’s another
mountain troll,” he reported. “I think that Black might have let it in.”
“Attention
everyone,” Dumbledore called. “Sirius Black has sent us a Mountain Troll and we
need everyone to get to their dorms at once. Teachers were going to get this
one this time.”
Everyone got up and headed up the stairs, the Slytherin’s
going down to their dungeon common room. Suddenly Helga stopped and caused
Harry and Ron to run right into her.
“What’s wrong?” Ron
asked.
“Emily, she doesn’t
know about the troll,” she told them.
“But,” Ron started.
“Look, she’s in our
house and even though she’s a Snape, she’s still my sister. And if you won’t
help me, then I will go on it alone.”
And she hurried off.
“Come on,” Harry
said.
They ran
down the corridor, and Helga looked through each bathroom, but no Emily.
Finally they made it to the third floor and that’s when they saw the troll.
Helga had a bad feeling that either it had moved or Percy had gotten the wrong
creature. Helga continued to stare at it and then it went in.
“What are we going
to do?” Ron asked.
“I’m going
to check to make sure that isn’t a girl’s bathroom and then were going to lock
it in,” Helga said.
“Yes, mame,” Ron
said.
Helga crept
down the corridor and then looked inside. To her absolute horror it was a girl’s
bathroom and then to her second absolute horror the high pitch scream of Emily
filled the corridor. Helga rushed in and pulled out her wand. The Mountain
Troll was advancing on Emily, breaking its share of sinks, trying to get to
her. She brought her wand down and hit it with one of her non-verbal spells. It
screamed in pain and then advanced on her.
“Get out of there,”
Harry yelled.
“N-Not without my
sister,” Helga said.
It brought down its club and Helga ducked, going between its
legs. She reached her sister and tried to pull Emily towards her, but she
wouldn’t budge.
“Please, Emily, we’ve
got to get out of here,” Helga begged.
“I c-can’t,” Emily
said.
Suddenly two showers of sparks came out of nowhere and soon
Professor Snape and Professor Lupin appeared just as the troll fell.
“Are you both
alright?” Harry asked.
Helga nodded, but Emily had fainted.
“Stupid
Gryffindor, thinking that you can act all brave,” Snape spat, grabbing Helga
and pulling her away from her sister. “Lupin lets get this thing to the
hospital wing.”
He nodded and picking her up they both left.
“Oh, ten points
from Gryffindor for not doing what you were told,” he told Harry and Ron.
They both just glared at him.
