  • Coming home, in cuffs.

Everything seemed too bright. He made a little sound in his throat, but he found that too dry. He realized how thirsty he was, briefly wondering why his cupboard was so bright. The sound he made was overly loud in his ears, and his ears were ringing as if unaccustomed to sound. He realized everything was a blur. He sought to speak.

    “Water?”

Something tightened around his hand. It was organic feeling. Alive. He gasped. He’d been caught. He felt his panic rise.

Harry gasped as something tightened around his hand. He struggled to remember what had happened after the first explosion. His head throbbed. He was gasping and struggling to stand. He looked up and felt his blood freeze. The deatheater dangled a wand in his face with a malicious grin.

“Looks like we’ve caught ourselves a savior.” Harry was dragged to his feet. A feeling of vertigo claimed him as he was spun around. His hands were clamped awkwardly behind his back. He shivered as he felt the wand tracing down his neck and collarbone.

“What are we to do with such a gift?”

“Don’t…please…” Harry whimpered, his body trembling. The mantra was strong in his head: Don’t hurt me, don’t hurt me, don’t hurt me, don’t hurt me.

“Harry! Oh my god, Harry. Draco, call a mediwitch and get Minerva in here.” That voice shot tremors through Harry. He heard small sounds, pathetic sounds like something a dying animal. He realized…they were coming from him. He shuddered.

Shhh Harry it’s alright, I’m here. It’s Severus.” Harry’s world slid into focus as Severus replaced his glasses. He drew in a long breath. The panic was held at bay. Severus was with him. Severus wouldn’t hurt him.

“Water?” Harry asked again, his voice a little clearer. He heard the man laugh. The relief in the voice made Harry wondered what exactly had happened. Severus offered him a water glass, and suddenly it didn’t matter what had happened as long as he could get some water!

    ****

The boy was awake! The relief was enough to make Severus weep. It’d been four days that he’d been here in the hospital room with Harry. Four days of talking with what appeared to be a catatonic corpse. Harry looked a little rough for wear but not broken. That in itself was a blessing.

Harry met his gaze with a hesitance.

“Why am I here?” It was the confusion he saw there that broke his heart.

“What do you remember?” Severus asked. Harry drew in a breath and his eyebrows scrunched together in a cute manner.

“I remember being at the Kings Cross station,” Harry’s cheeks turned pink. It made Severus wonder what exactly he was thinking. “Then my uncle…” Harry stopped. His head snapped up desperately. It was all the warning Severus had before the boy’s chest started heaving frantically. “No..no.”

Severus steadied the boy by grasping his shoulder; which turned out to be the complete wrong thing to do. Harry jerked violently backward and the next thing Severus knew was he was across the room sporting a rather prominent headache. He vaguely heard people rushing in to contain Harry. He tried to call out to tell them that they were just going to make it worse, but the words didn’t quite come out. Two warm hands enveloped him and pulled him upright. He leaned heavily on Draco.

“Strong wizards, especially young wizard have a strong tie between their magic and their emotions. In states of panic, terror, or fear accidental magic is bound to occur.” The healer’s voice echoed in the large conference room.

“And what, pray tell is Potter’s emotional state right now? Would you say it’s unbalanced?” The Minister asked. The healer glared momentarily at the man.

“I would say Mr. Harry Potter is experiencing some post traumatic stress. I wouldn’t go as far as to call him unbalanced.”

“But you do concur that Potter could be a threat to the populace?”

“Mr. Harry Potter is not a threat to anyone at this time.” The healer stood strong. The Minister looked displeased.

“What of the Crutiatus? He administered the curse to his uncle and his cousin.” There were gasps from the audience. The healer swore the sound of her teeth grinding echoed across the chamber.

“And it would be wise of you to explain all of the events that happened up to the Crutiatus curse.” The Minister raised his eyebrow at that.

“How do we know Potter didn’t lie about those events? I demand Potter’s statement be done by Veritaserum.”

“Harry Potter is in no condition to re-experience such a trauma.”

“So you admit that he is in an unbalanced state. If he can’t go through Veritaserum questioning, then in the meantime I rule that he be placed under house arrest.”

“I remind you that Potter does not have a home. His relatives have proven to be a danger to him.”

“Then he shall stay with a close relative.”

“He doesn’t have any relatives left.”

The debate was getting heated, the healer barely concealing her obvious disdain for the Minister.

“Minister if I may suggest a solution.” Severus’s voice rose up from the crowd.

“What would that be Severus Snape.”

“Harry Potter could stay with Draco and myself. This would provide double the security.” The Minister nodded. His lips pursed.

“That would do. However, as an extra precaution I want a ward raised to prevent Potter from using his magic.” And before anyone in the room could protest, “Meeting adjourned.”

    Willing it all away

Harry took at step forward, then back, and sat down again. He didn’t feel ready to deal with the media, which he could only guess was nearly bursting through St. Mungo’s doors. He stood again, and sat back down.

“Mr. Potter, if I wasn’t as experienced as I am with your complete stubborn pride and heroism, I’d say you were cutting ties with your Gryffindor ways.” Snape said from where he waited patiently at the door frame. The taunt helped to soothe his nerves and he wondered why he was so comforted by it.

He heard the man take a few steps. He looked up, and Snape seemed to be practically towering over him. A small shudder ran through him. Shaking his head, he focused on what Snape had just said. He wished he could dispute those words, but he just couldn’t muster the strength. He needed his bravado to cope, but he was straining to just do that. A frustrated sound escaped his lips.

“Se-Snape…I just don’t know anymore.” He said softly after a long moment of silence. The admission pierced the room. He heard Snape let out a slow breath.

    “I know, Potter.”

“Do they really think I’m a monster?”

    “No, they’re just idiots.”

Oddly enough, Harry felt a little better.

With resignation, he stood and followed Snape out the door.
Though they stood a ways apart, and despite the unease Harry still had, there was a weary trust between them. It felt for a moment that it would all be alright.

    ~

Before they reached the hoards of media, Harry was briefed on the court’s ruling on his case. He was asked to surrender his wand. He felt a lump well up in his throat. For perhaps the first time ever Harry felt completely helpless and vulnerable. He didn’t like the idea of going out there unarmed. And when they said they had to bind his magic before he left the premises, his eyes burned. It was Snape who placed a hand upon his shoulder as Harry trembled. He breathed in an attempt to calm himself. This was all too much, too fast. He just wanted to go back to his quiet hospital bed, and go to sleep.

Swallowing hard, he knew he had no choice but to oblige the court. They had made that clear. It was this or Azkaban.

“Potter, they have to bind your magic now.” Snape said carefully. He knew Harry was under a lot of strain, and at the moment he looked ready to break.

Harry merely nodded. He was allowing the numbness to sink in.

The binding was to be done by an Auror, who looked rather guiltily at Harry as he began his chant. The only thing Harry could describe the sensation that overtook him was pure agony. It didn’t necessarily hurt as the Cruciutus curse did, but it was like a deep ache. His whole body ached in a flash. Dizziness overcame Harry. Then there was numbness. He felt like they’d taken away one of his senses. He hadn’t realized how much a part of him his magic was.

He felt like a deer in the center of a pack of lions.

“Alright Mr. Potter,” The Auror was speaking and Harry had to try hard to focus, “There will be a great deal of disorientation for you until your body adjusts to the lack of its magical core. This should only last a few days, however, if it does persist you will need to contact us. There have been a few cases of severe illness due to….”

A sharp ringing assaulted Harry’s ears. He wasn’t sure if he made a sound or not but when the ringing stopped Snape was supporting him. It looked as though the healer had exchanged words with Snape because without so much as a ‘goodbye’ he was being lead to the doors.

“Are you alright?” Snape asked. He nodded slowly.

“Are you ready?” He closed his eyes, but also nodded; he needed to get away from this place.

    The door opened.

    “Mr. Potter is it true…?”

    “Did you really …?”

    “Why did you do it?”

    “Did your Uncle abuse you?”

“May we have just ten minutes of your time?”

“Harry you remember me, Rita Skeeter…”

    “Mr. Potter!” “Harry!” “Mr. Potter!”

The pack was ready to leap, when…

“We will not be answering questions at this time. Kindly step out of our way, and we may consider you for an exclusive.” Snape’s voice boomed. The crowd hushed. “Kindly owl Draco Malfoy, he will take charge of the media concerning Mr. Potters case.”

He made it look so simple, as the crowd tripped over each other to get out of their way.

Harry ignored the heated chatter around him. He only relaxed when he was seated in their carriage. Another wave of ringing disoriented him. He closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose.

“Well that went better than expected.” Snape said mildly. Harry was shocked at the expression on his face, it was expression between a scowl and a smile. If Harry hadn’t known the Potions Master, he might have sworn it was amusement.

Harry felt something break inside of him. He began to laugh, and he couldn’t stop.
    It was funny.

    Snape scowled at him.

    He laughed harder.
