Chapter 6 The Sorting
The following week passed in a flurry of activity as the staff prepared for the returning students. Each day, Sky would be left with a different Professor who would fill her with information on their own particular subject. They'd all viewed Severus’ pensives and were all appalled at what she had been through. As such, they treated her kindly and with affection. They made allowances when she struggled to understand things. Though on the whole, she picked things up fairly quickly.
Sky liked the attention. It was new, exciting. She was also looking forward to the sorting. Then she would have family. That was something she discovered she wanted more then anything else. On the first of September, she was brought to stand with the staff in the main entrance and told that the students were arriving.
But when literally hundreds of them poured through the doors, she was terrified, never having seen so many people at once, she didn’t know what to make of it. They were all shouting, calling and laughing. She hung back behind Professor MacGonagall’s robes until most of them disappeared into the Great Hall which had changed too. Four long table now ran the length of it and another long one long the end, raised on a dais.
Soon there were only a few dozen students left. They were the smaller ones, ones waiting to be sorted like her. One of them smiled at her and she smiled back. It felt nice. Another approached her and spoke.
“Hello I’m Andrea. Are you new as well?”
Sky spoke carefully. “Yes. I am Sky. I am waiting to be sorted.”
Andrea looked at her. “Are you foreign? You speak funny.”
Sky was a bit taken aback and didn’t know how to answer. She didn’t know what foreign meant. ‘Did she really speak funny?’ She supposed she must.
Fortunately, she was saved from answering when Professor MacGonagall stepped into the hall. After explaining the sorting, she ushered them through the doors to the Great Hall. Sky was at the back of the line of new students, but being older she could see over their heads. The Professors were all seated at the raised table at the front of the hall. Her eyes met for a moment with Professor Snape’s but he glared at her and she lowered them again. She felt all the eyes looking at them as they made their way to the front. She attracted more stares then the first years, mainly because she was clearly older then they were. Finally they stopped, Professor MacGonagall produced a tatty pointed hat and placed it on a stool in front of the teachers table.
Everyone in the hall was silent as the hat sang a song that meant nothing to Sky. Near the end it seemed to be trying to warn them about something but Sky was so nervous and excited at the thought of getting a family that she didn’t listen.
She waited patiently as one by one the first years were called to sit on the stool and the sorting hat was placed on their heads. Sometimes the hat would shout out the house name straight away and others it would take its time and think about it. Sky hoped it would take its time with her so she could tell it she wasn’t to go in Slytherin. That would make Sir very mad and she didn’t want that.
She could feel her wand vibrating slightly in her pocket when finally her name was called. She was last and stepped quickly up to the podium and sat on the stool. Sky couldn’t help the big smile that took over her face as she waited for the hat to be placed on her head. She was going to have a family. All eyes were on Sky as Professor MacGonagall lifted the hat and moved to place it on Sky’s head.
Somehow she missed and the hat fell to the floor. There were a few chuckles from the tables, but Sky kept on smiling as the Professor picked up the hat to try again. She was going to have a family. Just as she had it poised over Sky’s head, the hat let out a cry and crumpled.
“NO HOUSE.” The hat shouted at the top of its voice.
There was a babble of voices from all over the hall as the Professor turned to the Headmaster with the hat and a very confused expression on her face. The hat had never refused a sorting before. Sky’s smile fell as she looked at the sea of faces staring at her. She looked round to see the Headmaster talking with the hat. His face was angry as he spoke to it.
Again the hat was brought over and held over her head. Again Sky smiled. Again the hat crumpled and shouted
“NO HOUSE.” Then on a more quieter vein the hat added; “I shall not sort evil into a house of Hogwarts.”
Sky sat alone on the stool as the hat was taken away. She turned to look at the headmaster. He was already looking at her, and his normally twinkly blue eyes were hard. She turned and looked at the students again, but they were all staring at her as if she had grown an extra head.
When her arm was grabbed painfully, she looked up to see Sir staring down at her with a cold hard look in his eyes. He pulled her from the stool and she was taken, no dragged along the teachers’ table and pushed roughly through a door behind it. She was in a small room and she turned when the door slammed behind them.
Professor Snape’s face was livid as he looked at her and she backed away from him until she was against the wall. Her eyes kept flicking from his face to his hands, which were balled into fists. His knuckles were white and she knew he was itching to strike her. Defeated, she sunk slowly down the wall until she was sitting on the floor. Her eyes prickled and she felt like she wanted to cry. But she held them back. What was the point of crying? No one comes when you cry.
The door burst open and the Headmaster walked in, along with Professors MacGonagall, Flitwick and Sprout. Apart from Sir, all these Professors had been nice to her. Now they looked at her with cold hard expressions on their faces.
She stayed on the floor, trying to be as small as possible, hoping they would forget she was there and go away. But they didn’t. She was the reason they were here in the first place.
Albus spoke to her. “We are going to have to investigate this further. For now you will wait in here, you shall be brought to my office after the feast.”
With that, all but the Potions Master left the room.
A small table appeared, along with a plate, cutlery and a chair.
“Since you do not have a house table to sit at, you will eat in here. I shall come and collect you when I have eaten.”
The Potions Master turned on his heel and strode from the room.
.
As soon as the door closed, she watched as food appeared on the table. Rising to her feet she made her way to the table and sat down. Sky picked up her fork and played with the food, pushing it around her plate. Normally she ate heartily, but now she didn’t think she would be able to swallow anything.
Her stomach was in knots as she tried to figure out what happened out there. Why did the hat say 'no house'? Why did it say it wouldn’t sort evil into Hogwarts? She wasn’t evil. She wasn’t. Was she?
“Not evil. Not. Not. Not.”
Her eyes brimmed with unshed tears and she wiped them away roughly with her sleeve, refusing to give in to them. What would be the point. No one comes when you cry.
Sky jumped from her seat when thirty minutes later Sir entered the room, grabbed her arm and pulled her along a corridor that led to the main hall and shoved her hard against the wall opposite the moving staircase, winding her slightly.
“Stay there and wait for me to collect you.” He growled before turning and entering the Great Hall again.
Twenty minutes after that the large doors opened and students began pouring through, separating into groups and heading in four different directions. Older students were giving instructions to the first years to follow them.
Sky had to stand and watch as every one of them sailed past her, looking at her curiously and whispering about her.
Her cheeks burned with humiliation. She watched as they made their way to the different houses, wishing she was with one of those groups.
It felt like forever, standing there until the hall was empty.
The teachers came by and made their way to their respective houses in order to settle in the students. None of them spoke to her as they passed.
Eventually Sir came back. “Follow me.” Was all he said before heading for the stone gargoyle that led to the headmasters office, Sky running to keep up.
When they entered the office the Headmaster was already there, along with Professors MacGonagall, Flitwick and Sprout.
Sky stood in front of the Headmasters desk, hoping he would tell her it was all a mistake and she was going to be sorted now.
“It would seem you are not the person we assumed you to be. After a long discussion with our sorting hat we have come to the conclusion that it would be best if you were to leave Hogwarts.”
Actually it was more of an argument then a discussion. Not all of the Professors agreed with the hats decision and were demanding that it sort her fairly.
But the hat was adamant that Sky was evil and refused. It proclaimed that the girl carried a heavy darkness in her. A dark power that made her strong enough to destroy them all if she had a mind to.
Eventually it was agreed that they had been tricked by whoever sent the anonymous letter to Albus and that she should leave.
“Professor Snape has been kind enough to make alternative arrangements for you and will escort you from the grounds. There you will be given a portkey to take you to your destination.”
Sky was still struggling to understand what the white haired man was telling her when Sir opened the office door and told her to follow him.
She was shaking and her legs felt like jelly as she followed him through the door, looking back to the group of Professors, hoping one of them would say something, do something to let her stay.
But none of them even looked at her as she left the room and followed Sir down the moving staircase.
Though you would not know to look at him Severus was overjoyed that the little runt was being ejected from the school. He could barely contain the look of glee that threatened to spread across his face. He hadn’t bothered to make any arrangements. He did not see why he should. He was just going to throw her out and let her fend for herself.
“Sir please. What I done?”
“Shut up you idiot. If you cannot even string a sentence together it is better that you do not speak at all.”
He grabbed her arm again and dragged her to the main entrance. Sky didn’t know what was happening or why.
“Sir please. Tell me what I done. Where we go?” She pleaded as he took her across the grounds in the direction of the main gate.
“You are evil. Oh I knew from the beginning that you were abnormal. Well now you are finished here. We are going nowhere. Only you.”
Without another word, he opened the gates and flung her through so hard she was sprawled on the ground. He locked the gates, Sky on the outside and him on the inside.
“Now go.” He hissed as she struggled to get to her feet. “I do not wish to see your face ever again.” He spat before turning to walk away.
“NOOO.” She screamed at him, clutching the bars of the gate. “Please no. Sorting. Family. Back in. Please.” She sobbed.
He turned back and scowled at her. “There shall be no sorting and no family for you. Now go.”
“Why? Why you do? Where I go?”
“I did nothing you stupid girl.”
“You give me. Then you take.” She told him.
“I gave you nothing, how can I take it from you?”
“You give me something. You give hope. Then you take away. I not understand. Why?”
For the first time in many years, tears fell from her eyes and this time she couldn’t stop them. She just wanted to go back inside. Severus looked at her for a moment and felt a pang of something. He did not know what it was but he did not like what he felt, so he turned and walked back to the castle. He wanted a drink.
“Please.” She cried. “You beat Sky. Beat evil out and make Sky good. Please Sir. Not leave me here.”
His step never faltered, but her words cut through him like a knife as he made his way back to the castle. Sky stood and watched him go. She stood and watched as the shaft of light from the castle door extinguished. The tears continued their trail down her cheeks.
Sky stood and watched until the sun rose the following morning. But no one came. For the rest of the day she waited, hoping it was all a mistake and someone would come and get her. When the sun went down, she accepted the fact that they would never come for her.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Back in the school the tables had buzzed at what had happened during the sorting. Severus gave out his usual glare as he tucked into his food contentedly. The Headmaster and the rest of the staff discussed the events quietly amongst themselves. Albus was angry at been taken in by the girl. She had appeared so innocent yet she was deceitful and evil to the core. The sorting hat was never wrong.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Sky wondered what to do. She had nowhere to go and no way of getting there. All she had were the clothes she was standing in and her wand. But as she didn’t really know what to do with a wand other then lift trees, it was useless to her.
She looked down the road that led away from the school. The sun was gone and it was dark and cold now.
Sky trudged along the side of the wall that enclosed the school grounds. Maybe she could find somewhere to shelter until the sun came up in the morning.
Moving more quickly to keep warm and leaning in to the wall, she hadn’t gone far when she fell sideways. For a moment, she thought she had fallen through an opening in the wall but as she got up and looked properly she discovered something very different.
From the outside it looked like a straight wall. In fact, where Sky was standing the wall actually overlapped, one side over the other.
Figuring she would be able to settle into the niche and sleep she moved round the overlap of wall and was met with a green wooden door.
Hoping it would let her back into the grounds she tried the handle.
The door swung open easily and torches flared to life, illuminating a short corridor.
Lights were the last thing she expected and she jumped back, expecting Sir to emerge and tell her to get lost. She rubbed at her stone nervously, unaware that it was glowing with a myriad of colours as her wand started vibrating in her pocket.
When no one came, she stepped cautiously through the door. The moment she was over the threshold, the door closed quietly behind her. In a panic, Sky turned and grabbed the handle and the door flew open. Well at least she wasn’t locked in. She turned her attention back to the corridor and the door closed again. Inching forward, she ran out of corridor and had to turn left. But where she expected to see the lawns of Hogwarts, there was instead a large room. Much larger then it should have been possible. The walls surrounding Hogwarts were several feet thick, but this room was much more then that. There was a sofa and armchairs, a desk. All the same kind of things that her second room at Hogwarts contained. But these were in a much different style. There was no bed but a fire flared to life in the hearth as she watched. Everything was covered in a thick layer of dust, so whoever lived here had not been back in a long time.
If that were the case, Sky figured that she might be safe enough sleeping here tonight. It was certainly better then sleeping outside and she had nowhere else to go.
She wandered round the room, her fingers trailing through the dust as she went. Then she came to another door. This one opened onto a bedroom. Once again it was dusty. Taking of her robe she set about shaking the bedclothes so she could sleep in the bed. She was nice and warm because the fire in this room was lit too. As soon as she had cleared of as much of the dust as she could, she went back into the other room, coughing from the dust as she went. She saw another door which proved to be a kitchen. Looking in the cupboard, she found a bucket and some rags. She turned on the tap and after a lot of clanking and rattling, the water finally came through.
When she turned with the bucket to head into the living room, her wand was hovering in front of her. She put the bucket down and took hold of the wand.
“Hello wand. You feel lonely too?”
The wand vibrated in her hand and she felt the stone at her neck pull at her. Following the pull she went back into the room. The wand was pulling now, like it wanted her to do something but she didn’t know what.
“Listen to it girl. Hear what it is telling you.”
Sky screamed and dropped the wand as she shot back into the kitchen. She’d thought she was alone her but the voice told her otherwise.
There was a soft chuckle and her wand came back to her. Once again she felt the pull of the stone and wand. She was not too keen on following it this time but obviously someone was living here so she would have to leave. Walking back into the room, Sky heard the voice speak again.
“I am sorry for startling you. That was not my intention. Please do not be afraid.”
Looking around her wide eyed Sky couldn’t find anyone to fit the voice.
“On the wall to your left child.”
Sky didn’t know her right from her left but she hit lucky and stared at the smiling portrait of a man. The portraits in the castle spoke so she had gotten used to them. She just hadn’t expected to find one here. Her finger rubbed at the stone as she stared at him. “Did you speak Sir?”
“I most certainly did. Who are you?”
“I am Sky Sir. I should go yes?”
“Indeed not. You are the first living soul to have entered this room in a thousand years. I welcome your company.”
“You do? Thank you Sir.” That was not the answer she expected. “You told me listen. Listen what?”
“To your wand girl. Listen to your wand.”
Sky held the wand to her ear but it remained silent and she looked at the man in the portrait. He chuckled again.
“I am Salazar. Salazar Slytherin. I am pleased to meet you Sky.”
“I pleased to meet you Sir.” She told him slowly and carefully. “Who lives here?”
“You do at the moment.”
“No. I go Sir.”
Oh? And where do you go?”
“Don’t know Sir.”
“Then it is settled. You shall stay here.”
“Can’t Sir. Sky must go. Sir and Headmaster said so. Sky is bad. Evil.”
“And do you think you are bad or evil?”
“Don’t know Sir. Not want to be. Want to be good, have family. But hat said ‘No House‘. So Sir is throwing me from school. Say go away. No house. No family. Not wanting Sky. Waited. All night and day but no one coming for Sky. Then I find here. In wall.”
Salazar looked angry. “If you ask me, ‘Sir’ is a ‘pain in the arse’. Please excuse the turn of phrase dear. Now, wave your wand as it wishes you to do.”
Sky looked at the wand puzzled. It was pulling at her hand again and she held it lightly and allowed it to go where it wanted. Her arm swung a wide arc, the wand lighting up the room brilliantly as at went. As her arm came to rest by her side the light was gone and the room was spotless. Even the portrait was clean and looked as though it had been painted quite recently. In fact, everything in the room had a new look about it. Everywhere was decorated tastefully in greens and silver.
“I did that?” She asked the man.
“Indeed you did and I thank you for it.”
The wand pulled again and she followed it to the bedroom, repeating the wand action and this room too was spotless. Soon the kitchen too was spotless. Salazar noticed a pained look on her face.
“That way dear.” He told her, pointing at yet another door.
Sky found the bathroom, relived herself and washed her hands then waved her wand. This bathroom was even nicer then Sir’s. Like the rest of the wall house it was all in shades of green and silver.
Salazar explained that there was a cabinet in the kitchen that would provide her with whatever food was required. All she had to do was open the door, give her request and the food would appear. Sky went to the cabinet, asked for some soup and closed the door. A moment later, the door opened and there was a tray with a bowl of soup, a loaf of fresh baked bread and a spoon. Next, she asked for a drink of pumpkin juice. Once again the door opened to reveal a glass and a jug of pumpkin juice.
She sat at the table in the kitchen and had her meal. When she placed the bowl in the sink to wash it, the tap turned itself on and a small brush lifted of the sink and cleaned the bowl. Sky thought it was marvellous and placed the tray, bowl and spoon back in the cabinet. The jug of juice she place in another cupboard for later.
“Thank you Sir.” She told the portrait when she stepped back into the living room.
“For what?”
“Letting me eat, sleep here.”
“Sky. You do not need to thank me. This is where you were destined to be. This is now your home. And I … if you will have me, shall be your family for the moment. Now. You will find clean towels in the bathroom and nightwear and clothing in the bedroom closet. I suggest you take a bath and go to bed. You have a busy day ahead of you tomorrow.”
“I do? You want me here, be family with you?”
“That is what I said. Now be off with you.” he told her kindly.
She headed off to the bathroom in a daze. ‘Have home, family.’ She couldn’t believe it. The man in the portrait wanted her to stay. And she had food too, whenever she wanted it.
As she soaked in the bath, she thought about how lucky she was to be here; her own place, kind of, and someone who wanted her to be here. She wondered what the man had meant about tomorrow being a busy day. By the time she was in bed, she was thinking about what had happened at Hogwarts. Her time with Sir had not been easy. Every day he found some way of telling how much he hated her, loathed her. How she was a burden to him. But it was so much better then the time before when she stayed in the cell, the beatings.
When the white haired Headmaster arrived things were even better. Everyone had been nice to her. Then that hat made everything go wrong. What she didn’t understand was why. Sir really wanted to hurt her for that. She had seen it in his eyes. Maybe if she stood and let him beat her he would have let her stay. But she doubted it. The Headmaster said she had to go and Sir didn’t wait. He just dragged her out and walked away.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
That same night Severus was summoned again. He told the Dark Lord what happened with the girl and the sorting hat. It was one of the few times Voldemort found something to be amusing and he allowed Severus to leave without punishment.
On his return, Albus was waiting for him, as he usually did. He would prefer the his Potions Master did not have to go at all. But if he did not, then the Order would have no way of gleaning the scant information Severus sometimes managed to find out.
“Severus. Are you alright?”
“I am fine Headmaster. When he learned the fate of the girl he found it amusing. Hence the reason I am back in one piece.”
“Oh speaking of the girl.”
“Must we Albus? I would much prefer to forget that she ever existed.”
“Never the less, I have received a missive from Mr Ollivander asking as to how the wand she received is performing. Most unusual in itself. Yet I have received no invoice for a wand. Why is that do you suppose?”
Severus poured them both a firewiskey and retrieved a pensive from his bookshelf. He placed the it on the table between them and passed a glass to the Headmaster.
“Drink this. You will need it.”
Albus sipped at the whisky for a few minutes and put down the glass. He placed a finger into the pensieve. By the time he removed it, Severus had topped up his glass and Albus picked up the glass and drank deeply.
“She has the Wand of Bloods Severus. Why did you not tell me this before?”
“I did not consider it particularly important at the time. Just unusual. Did you know the wand is made of bone?”
“I know what it is made from Severus. It also contains a drop of my own blood. Where is the wand now? I would like to see it.”
“Ah. Now that could be a problem Headmaster.”
“Really. Why is that?”
“Because she has it with her.”
“And the stone she wears around her neck?”
“It as a permanent fixture. It will not come off. What are you not telling me Albus?”
“Severus that wand is the most powerful wand in the world. Not only that, but it will only work for the holder of the stone she wears around her neck. That stone and its twin, the one in the wand, are not stones Severus.”
“Then what are they?”
They are the eyes of the original.”
“Original what Albus. You are not making any sense.”
“Severus, Mr. Ollivander has already told you the origin of the bone that was used to create the wand. The only one like it in existence. The eyes too are from the same origins.”
“So we need to find her and get the wand and the stone from her. That stone will not come off Albus. Maybe if she were dead. But not while she is alive.”
“No Severus. We must find her. And she must stay alive. Only she carries in her veins the blood of all four founders of Hogwarts. That Severus along with the same blood line as Merlin and before that, the original.”
“Bloody hell Albus. We’ve just thrown her out. The dammed hat said she is evil for Gods sake.”
“The hat is wrong Severus. And correct.”
“What?”
“I believe the girl carries equal amounts of good and evil within her. Unfortunately, the sorting hat seems to have picked up on the vast amounts of evil and has refused to look any further. She must be found and brought back here as quickly as possible.”
“I don’t fucking believe this.” Severus growled. “How are we supposed to find her now? She could be anywhere. And who is to say she will return if we do find her. She was not exactly sent of with the best of good cheer was she? I also hope that you do not expect me to be the one to go looking for her. I found her once for you. I shall not do so again Albus.”
The Headmaster looked at Severus sadly. They/He, Albus Dumbledor had just made the biggest mistake of his life, and he had no idea how to go about resolving it.
