Chapter 6
“I had intended to invite you to supper in my rooms, but it seems you have made a head start.” Severus eyed the pot bubbling over the fire.
“You’re welcome to join me if you want. It will not be anything fancy, mas and vegetables as before.”
“Mas?”
“Meat.”
“Meat and vegetables sounds fine.” He acquiesced, finding a pebble and transfiguring it into a chair again. “Since you prefer to eat outdoors, perhaps I should offer you supper and bring it out here another time.”
“That would be nice, just give me some notice so I don’t have to bother hunting.”
“Hunting? You hunt your own food. Why? Where? The house elves will provide anything you need, even out here.”
“Oh they already do, where do you think the vegetables came from? I have not had chance to grow them. Hagrid’s are better though, and Mr Filch‘s. Sometimes I hunt in the wavver (forest), sometimes out on the hills.”
He said nothing more as she fell to her knees, started raking in the dirt nearby and pulled out a roundish, steaming package wrapped in leaves that had turned a crispy brown. He watched curiously, as she dropped it onto a flat piece of wood and removed the leaves. Under those was what looked to Severus like a large lump of dried mud or clay.
A quick rap with a rock and the clay cracked, Paula pulling the pieces away and throwing them into the nearby trees. Taking a small, but wickedly sharp knife, Paula skinned the odd-looking creature, sliced up the flesh and dropped it into the pot.
She filled in the hole, pushing the soil into place with her booted foot and tamped it down before vanishing the skin of the creature now in the pot, and washing her hands in a bowl of water to the side of her.
“There, shouldn’t be long now.” She brought the flageolet from her pocket and set it to play, then hummed happily to its tune as she removed the dishes and cutlery from the box she used as a seat.
“Would you mind terribly if I take a look in your car …wagon? I confess to being inquisitive about new and unusual things.”
“Be my guest, just do not touch anything you can pick up or open. Its booby trapped.” She added at his questioning eyebrow.
“Hmm.” He said, a slight frown on his brow as he made his way to the wagon.
The door was already open and he climbed the painted wooden steps to peek inside.
At the back and set high on the wall was a small double bed, barely large enough to sleep two, though at a push it would suffice, he mused. A thick patchwork quilt covered it and white cased, lace edged pillows sat at the top. The bed itself was built on top of cupboards in a rich, red cherry wood. A small, unlit wood burning stove on the right, again surrounded by more storage in the same red cherry wood. A small counter set atop of that and a small mullioned window with a white lace curtain.
To the left were what appeared to be some kind of folding seats, or maybe not. Severus was not too sure. Shelves lined the upper halves of the sides and above the bed also. Every inch of available space was utilised with storage. A stack of parchments sat on the counter, a pot of ink and several quills beside them. On the shelf above the head of the bed was a black lacquered box, silver engraving adorning it. He was nosey enough to wonder what it contained, but not stupid enough to try to find out.
“Suppers ready. Have you seen enough, or do you want me to show you anything?” Paula said from the step below him.
He started at her voice, once again she had managed to advance on him while he was unaware and it was beginning to rankle him.
“Yes, these folding things, what are they?” He indicated the flat pieces of wood to his right, seeing as he was now facing out of the wagon.
Paula urged him further inside and he had no choice but to sit on the bed when she followed him and flicked a small catch aside. She followed this with another, then made him lift his feet up as she pulled a drawer out from under his legs. “Table and chairs. A bit cramped I know, but they suffice.” A flick of her wand and they tucked themselves away. “And this one.” She said, sliding two lumps of wood to each end of a higher fold away and pulling the whole lot down, “Extra bed. It sleeps one, two if they top and tail, plus there is another above to make bunks. See it?” She asked, pointing at the other fold away that had been hidden by the first.
“Ingenious.” He admitted. He would have helped her fold the bed back up but he was trapped on the bigger bed until she folded the spare one away. The sides of the wagon are expandable if need be, but since I was only giving you a demonstration it was not worth doing anything about it. Ready to eat now or would you like to see more?”
Severus would have liked to see a lot more, but not of the wagon. The tops she wore when out of the castle were more than his libido could take. “I think I would like to eat now. How do you stand it cramped up in this small space?”
“I could ask you the same question. I sleep in here when the weather is bad, and mark the homework. The rest of the time I am outside, I cannot live constantly in four walls.”
Severus ate his food with relish. This meat was different to last time, more earthy but equally enjoyable. Paula also provided fresh bread and a bottle of red wine. Not the best he’d tasted, but better somehow because of the way they ate, outside in the fresh air with no noisy students and only the sounds of the forest to disturb them.
“Paula, next Thursday is a full moon. As much as you hate the thought of sleeping in the castle, I would ask that you reconsider for that one night.”
