The Grindelwald Legacy
Chapter 6
Severus Snape, Potions Master for Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry, was totally pissed. The students, a necessary evil in his opinion, were there merely to antagonize him. It was two weeks before the summer holidays and some idiotic first year Hufflepuff had dropped a whole bottle of sneezewort in the store cupboard, thus sending himself into a series of violent sneezes, they in turn threw him about the small room. Thus actions sent jars and vials tumbling from the shelves and crashing to the floor. One such ingredient was sopohorous, used in ‘draught of the living dead’, and highly toxic.
Severus had barely managed to retrieve the boy and contain the cupboard, before casting numerous scourgyfying spells on him, dismissing the class, and taking the unconscious, yet still sneezing boy to the infirmary.
Now the majority of the school years practicals, as well as the ingredients, were ruined, contaminated. Fortunately he kept his personal stores well away from the classrooms but still, it meant he was forced to make an impromptu trip to Diagon Alley to replace much of what was lost so the dunderheads could continue to learn nothing for the last two weeks of term. It also meant he would be down three classrooms, since it would take several weeks for the main, and two adjoining classrooms to be completely cleared of any harmful spores that can linger from the combination of mixed components. To Severus it was a catastrophe of epic proportions, nothing like this had ever happened while he was potions Master and Henry Lane, first year or not, had just failed every potions exam for the entirety of his seven year tenure at Hogwarts.
He was in a foul mood when he entered the apothecaries. He had a list a mile long, though he only needed small amounts of each item as the stores would be replenished just before the start of the new school year anyway.
After scrutinising the shelf of lionfish spines, barely noticing the young woman standing next to him, he spied the only packet to still have it’s seal undamaged, thus the venom inside would be viable. He was about to reach out and take it when a small hand appeared and took it from under his nose with a polite “Excuse me”. Severus stared after the bouncing blonde curls walking away from him in shock for a moment, then scowled.
“No I will not excuse you. You have taken my lionfish spines.”
Lucy turned to see a tall, dark haired man with angry black eyes scowling at her menacingly. “Sorry?”
“The packet of spines in your hand, they are mine.”
Lucy looked down at the spines, then back at the man. She gave him a return frown. “I don’t think so. They were on the shelf and you were only looking at them same as me. It’s hardly my fault if you weren’t quick enough.”
She turned to walk away, but clearly tall, dark and grumpy wasn’t willing to let it go.
‘How dare she speak to me in that manner?’ “You will give them back, now young lady.”
Lucy turned back to him. Who the hell did he think he was? “Sod off, they weren’t yours to start with.”
Severus’ eyebrows shot up into his hairline. “Accio spines.” He growled, smirking as the packet slipped from her hand and flew into his.
Lucy was too livid to be surprised, of all the gall. “You give them back now, freak.”
“What did you call me?” Severus’ face took on a dangerous mien. “I suggest you go about your business, while you still can.”
“And I suggest you give me back my spines and stop being such a bully. Now give.” She demanded angrily, her hand outstretched.
It was difficult to say who was more astonished when the packet of spines was suddenly wrenched from his firm grip to fly back into Lucy’s hand.
Lucy looked scared to death while she alternated her gaze from the packet to the tall man and back again. Then she turned and dashed out of the aisle to find her gran.
Severus’ brow creased in consternation, whoever the young woman was, she’d just performed quite strong wandless, none verbal magic, and seemed surprised by it. She also had his lionfish spines. He marched to the front of the shop, intent on intimidating her to return them, only to halt in his tracks when he saw her standing next to… Hetty Grindelwald of all people. The blonde thief was gesticulating as she was telling Hetty about her encounter with the strange man who tried to steal her ingredients.
“Honestly, the nerve of the man. But you should have seen his face when the packet came back to me, I don’t know which of us was more surprised. It was like magic.”
Severus slipped quietly back between the aisles to listen. Hetty Grindelwald, he thought she’d expired years ago. And who was the attractive, if annoying young woman with her?
“I mean, he still had his hands by his sides, how was I supposed to know he wanted them too? He got in a right strop because I got the only ones that were still worth having. Pity too, he might be good looking if he didn’t pull such a sour face. Had the most amazing eyes, black. I‘ve never seen black eyes before. Is it a wizard thing?”
Severus’ jaw dropped. ’She likes my eyes? Might be good looking? How dare she?’
“He sounds familiar. You carry on with the shopping, I’ll go take a peek.” Hetty whispered.
Severus quickly made his way to the other end of the shelves and pretended to be examining daisy roots.
“I thought as much, Severus Snape.”
He turned, pretending to be surprised. “Madam Grindelwald, how are you?” He gave a small bow.
“As you can see, I haven’t dropped dead yet. So how’s the old goat doing? Still manipulating everyone I take it?”
“The headmaster is well, and yes, he is still using his authority to sway others to his own way of thinking.”
“And you’re still terrorising the students as usual.”
“Of course, it is the only way to make them sit up and take notice.”
“Didn’t work with young Lucy though did it?” She asked, a sly smirk on her lips.
“The young lady took something that was mine Madam.”
“No, she took something from the shelf before you did.”
“I was about to take them. I need those spines Madam and the woman blatantly snatched them away when she knew I was about to retrieve them myself.”
“No I never. You were only looking. You alright gran? Don‘t you pick on her.” Lucy said, stepping up to Hetty’s side and ready to fight tooth and nail if this stranger threatened to harm so much as a hair on her grans head.
Severus’ jaw dropped once again. ’Gran?’ “This is your granddaughter?” He asked, somewhat taken aback.
“No, she’s my sister. Severus Snape, meet Lucy Grindelwald, my granddaughter. Lucy, Professor Severus Snape, he teaches potions at Hogwarts. He will be your Professor while you’re there.”
“Him? Gran you have to be kidding me.” Lucy said from the side of her mouth as she stared at the man now smirking in her direction.
“Miss Grindelwald, I would like to say it is a pleasure to meet you, unfortunately, it isn’t.”
“Yeah, well the feelings mutual.” She muttered. “Gran, the puffer fish eyes are all rotten.” Lucy turned away from the Professor to look directly at Hetty. “Please tell me I don’t have to take his classes?” She mouthed.
Hetty ignored her plea, said good day to Severus and took her to the counter where she demanded fresh puffer fish eyes from the assistant.
Severus was again furious when he discovered the two women had also taken the last of the fresh puffer fish eyes and the assistant told him it would be three days before the next batch was delivered.
With a sigh he turned to Hetty. “Madam Grindelwald, I find myself at your mercy. I am in dire need of at least two of the ingredients you have seen fit to purchase, might I ask that you allow me to have them?”
Hetty eyed him with satisfaction. “I suppose we can manage without them for a few days. Seeing as how you finally found the courage to at least ask politely this time.”
Severus bit his tongue as he tried desperately to hold back a scathing comment. Henry Lane had just added a years worth of detentions with Filch for the entirety of his second year at Hogwarts. And this woman, no girl, was in for a rough ride if she was attending next year. In all honesty he’d placed her in her early twenties when he first saw her, she certainly looked more mature than any sixth or seventh year he’d ever known. For all that she’d aggravated him, he found her rather attractive, at least until he discovered she wasn’t as old as he thought.
Lucy appraised him while he and her gran were talking. Tall, dark, deep sexy voice, at least when he wasn’t being rude. He seemed to be a nice build, though it was a bit hard to tell with that great ‘Batcape’ he wore.
When he scowled at her before leaving she stuck her tongue out at him. Childish yes, but worth it to see the stunned, wide eyed expression on his face.
“You shouldn’t have let him have those gran. He didn’t deserve them.”
“No, he didn’t Lucy. But the ingredients weren’t for him, they were for the students use. We have enough to keep us going for the time being.”

Well, Severus has finally met Lucy, and what an introduction
