Sirius paced around outside the cabin while James was digging weeds out in a little herb garden he had started. Ever since he had known James the man had gone and played in the dirt when he needed to relax.
“James, I really can’t stand this,” Sirius huffed. “I know where that little traitor is, and you expect me to just sit here quietly while he roams free?”
“No,” James answered as he stood up and brushed the dirt from his robes. “I expect you to wait for the right time.”
“And when exactly will that be?” Sirius snapped, growing more impatient by the day.
“Tonight,” James answered with a wry grin. Then he turned and went back inside without another word.”
Sirius stood stunned. He never thought the day would come. As soon as he regained his senses he ran after James. “Not that I’m complaining, but why do you think tonight is the perfect night?”
James just shrugged as he dried his now clean hands on a towel. “Gut feeling,” he mumbled.
“You and your gut feelings,” Sirius chuckled and shook his head.”
“Have they ever steered you wrong?” James asked with a raised eyebrow. “If you’ll recall, they got us all out of some pretty tight scrapes. And my gut tried to tell you that Wormtail was damn traitor…”
Sirius hung his head in silence. He couldn’t argue. James had tried to tell him time and time again that Peter was a spineless little worm. After Harry was born, James wouldn’t let Peter anywhere near him.
After the pair had forced down a little dinner, a dog and panther could be seen running through the dark forest side by side. They reached Hagrid’d hut a little before sunset. Several men, including the Minister, were gathered outside. James and Sirius hid themselves just inside the tree line.
“What do you suppose is going on?” Sirius whispered.
“They’re executing that hippogriff there because they think it’s dangerous,” James answered.
“How…?” Sirius asked, too shocked to be able to finish the sentence.
“Some of us are better at not being seen than others,” James smirked evilly. He let out a deep sigh and frowned at the sight of the hippogriff tied up in the pumpkin patch. “Poor Hagrid. He was always so good to us while we were at school.”
Sirius nodded in agreement. “But what can we do? You’re dead, and I’m a fugitive.”
“Plenty,” James whispered back as he started creeping toward the hut.
“James!” Sirius called out as loud as he dared. “What in the nine hells do you think you’re doing!”
James didn’t answer back. Instead he continued edging toward the pumpkin patch. Everyone but Dumbledore had their backs turned. They were going through the motions of a formal appeal. James knew he would have a little time, but not much.
James approached the hippogriff with caution. He was bold and fearless, but not stupid. The creature, sensing something bad was happening, was rather antsy. But it could also sense that James had come to help, so it let him near.
The crowd of men turned toward the hippogriff suddenly. James crouched low to the ground and sat still as a statue. His chest wasn’t even moving as he breathed. Sirius was watching the scene from his hiding place, and bit his lip so hard it started to bleed. Fortunately, the only one that seemed to notice James was there was Dumbledore. And to Sirius’ amazement, he didn’t seem shocked to see him; but maybe he was just really good at hiding it.
As soon as the men turned away again James just gave Dumbledore a little wink. Then he carefully reached up to grab the chain the creature was tied with. The metal magically melted in his hand. And just as luck would have it, the men headed inside the hut to sign some papers.
With a light jerk, the hippogriff got up to follow James into the woods. “Don’t ever do that again,” Sirius chided once they were safely hidden in the trees again. “I thought I was going to have a heart attack!”
The pair made their way through the woods, Sirius blindly following his best friend since he seemed to know where he was going. Then suddenly movement caught their eyes. Three teenagers were heading toward the whomping willow, and it looked like they were chasing after something. One of them had bright ginger hair.
“Wormtail!” Sirius growled and took off; changing back into a black dog as he ran. James just shook his head and continued on with what he was doing.
He was caught off guard when he ran into a younger carbon copy of himself with a young girl. He stood still and cocked his head to the side, just staring silently for a moment. “Harry…?”
“Dad… I…. Wow, I didn’t realize that you…. You have Buckbeak!” Harry stuttered.
What confused James the most was that Harry, his son that he hadn’t seen in twelve years, was more surprised to see the hippogriff than him. “Well…” he snorted. “When I woke up this morning I had a feeling today was going to be a very interesting day. It seems I was right.”
“This explains a lot…” the brunette with him commented.
“No… not really.” James shook his head. “Well, maybe it explains a lot for you.” When the girl went to open her mouth again James put up his hand to signal her to stop. “It’s probably better that I don’t know.”
He handed Harry the chain the hippogriff was on. “Just take it,” he sighed. “I think you’ll know what to do. Apparently, I need to go meet you two.”
The two teens watched him head off toward the shrieking shack. “He took that better than I would’ve thought,” Hermione mumbled.
“Yeah,” Harry agreed, gently stroking Buckbeak’s nose. “You have no idea how glad I am to have him back.”
