Ron knew talking to his mother about Pansy was not bound to be easy. He knew what he had to say and what he still planned to keep secret. He didn’t want his family to know just yet about his plans to marry or even that he had been actively employed for awhile. That was still his secret. Pansy had agreed to marry him in June, after they let Hogwarts for good. Ron had several plans, but until then, he had to settle things with his mother.
At the apparition point, he gave Pansy her present. He wanted her to have it now. She shed a few tears at the gold bracelet. A series of hearts that wound around her wrist. It was the perfect size and weight, and settled perfectly. She took out a small box and gave it to Ron. He was stunned. A silver chain with a ‘P’ in little stones. Ron put it on immediately and tucked it in his shirt where it rested against his heart.
He made sure Pansy apparated all right before he left as well.
He appeared outside the Burrow, still mentally going over what he’d planned to say. Everyone was present and as usual the volume inside challenged to foundation of the rickety house. He gave holiday greetings to his family casually, since there were several conversations going on at once.
“How is she?” Harry asked. With the noise level, he knew he wouldn’t be overheard if he talked quietly. Hermione waited for an answer as well. She and Harry had filled in the parts of the encounter the other had missed.
“She cried thinking she had messed up the first meeting, but I calmed her down. She’s still upset a little. What about mum?” He asked them.
“She was in tears for a bit at the short reply you sent thinking that her son was hurt. She’s still worried but she’s ok.” Hermione tried to look relieved but she understood how Pansy was feeling.
“Where’s is she?” Ron asked.
“In the kitchen.” They sat down as Ron left to look for his mother. Arthur watched the two as his son left. He gave them an odd look, but when they avoided his eyes, he decided to follow his son to the kitchen.
“Mum?” Molly turned around and hugged him.
“Ron! You’re back!”
“Yes, just in time for dinner.” Arthur said, walking in. He had a feeling his wife had misunderstood what had happened when she saw Pansy. She had run around every scenario trying to convince him of the low character his son had tangled himself up with. Arthur had his own theories but kept them to himself. “So, Ron, how was the visit?” He wanted to start casually but Molly had her own plans.
“Ron, you read my owl carefully didn’t you?”
“Yes Mum and it’s not what you think.” Arthur remained at the ready as he listened to his youngest son.
“I saw her there Ronald, she even introduced herself….”
“I know she was there Mum, I was there too.” Molly’s eyes flew open. Arthur jumped in.
“Molly, let him finish. Go on son, what happened?” Ron was glad for his father’s presence. He seemed to be the only one who could calm his wife.
“During school Pansy showed me a letter from her cousin. He’s a huge Cannons fan and she thought we might get on well. We’ve been owling the whole time and when he found out he was going to visit, he asked me to visit as well. Pansy was there visiting her aunt, when you saw her she was bringing take away for us.”
“You see Molly, it wasn’t what you thought.” Arthur told his wife. She seemed unsure.
“Why would her family be at a hotel for the holidays?” Ron already had an answer for her.
“Not every family is as accepting or accommodating as us mum. They don’t stay at the Parkinson’s because Pansy’s aunt married someone the family didn’t approve of. While the rest of them are fine years later, Pansy’s mother still won’t speak to her sister.” That part was true. Pansy had confessed that she was afraid of being cast out because of Ron, since her mother still holds a grudge against her own sister. Ron wanted to make his mother aware of this. If the same thing happened to Pansy, he wanted his own family to accept her.
Molly’s face remained stoic while she went back to preparing the meal. Fleur and Gwyn, Charlie’s wife, came in to help. Ron left the kitchen with his father. He knew he would get no further with his mother.
“Got a minute Dad?”
“Sure, let’s go out here.” They stepped out onto the porch and Mr. Weasley cast a warming spell. He had a feeling there was more to it than his son was willing to admit in front of his mother. All of his sons were like that. But he had a feeling there was always something a young man wouldn’t reveal to his mother. “Now, what is it son?”
“Dad, when Pansy came back she was in tears. I don’t know what happened, but she felt awful. She felt even worse when the owl came.”
“You let her read the owl?” Arthur knew what his wife had said.
“Dad, she gave me this look……” Ron hung his head.
“Say no more, I know that look. Your mother told me outright what she thinks. She was there to see you wasn’t she son?” Ron was prepared for this one also.
“Yes, she did stay one night.” His father nodded his head. Ron knew he would understand. Bill mentioned talks with their father went casually when it came to sex. Arthur seemed to know that as men, his sons were bound to be far from the innocents his wife thought they were. He knew the truth but, tried to instill some responsibility in his sons and respect for women. So far they had not disappointed him. They all grew to be gentleman when it came to ladies.
Ron knew his father wasn’t stupid. Besides he doubted his own parents stayed away from each other before they married.
“How is she now?”
“She’s fine. I really didn’t know how to handled all those tears?” He shook his head.
“Listen son, don’t worry about your mother, she reacted this way before. I imagine it’s worse for her because you are her youngest and she knows her influence is becoming more and more limited.” Ron merely nodded. “Are you serious about her?”
“I’m going to marry her.” Ron told his father in all seriousness. He had prepared himself for an onslaught of questions. Where will you live? How will you earn a living? Have you thought this through? He didn’t want to tell anyone yet of his plans for after graduation.
His father instead just gripped his shoulder. “Good. I’m glad. Now think no more of it. I can handle your mother.” With that, they went back inside, and Ron sent of a brief note telling Pansy that everything was fine, and he would email her in more detail later.
Dinner passed well enough, although Ron seemed to notice his mother was a little less talkative than usual. Hermione on the other hand knew what it was. While Molly felt guilty, she wouldn’t say it. Hermione herself had never received an apology for the treatment she had received in fourth year. Mrs. Weasley just acted as if everything was fine.
Ron was at ease though. His father said to trust him and he did.
Pansy placed the time with Ron over the holidays as her most treasured memory to date. She had been treated that way, and hoped beyond anything that it was real.
Over the next few months, Ron set out to prove that it was.
