Chapter 6
The following morning Harry woke and was stunned to see that he was so close to the Marked One. He tried to shake it off by rationalizing that he must have been cold and was simply looking for warmth or he was dreaming about a witch. He shook his head again and was grateful for the fact that Snape was still sleeping. He got up and went to the bathroom. When he came back he found Severus still under the covers but awake.
“Aren’t you going to get up?”
Severus dreaded to state the obvious, “I don’t have any clothing.”
Harry smiled a malicious smile, “You do know it is Tuesday. Shall I remind you…? Kreacher … does not…”
Severus decided to play along with his little game even when he knew that Kreacher would pop up as soon as Harry left the house. So he bowed his head and said, “Kreacher does not work on Tuesdays.”
“Exactly and since I have no desire to look at your sorry arse you are to stay under the covers until I leave. Remember to have breakfast and I am sure Kreacher left you some lunch, but if he didn’t, firecall and I will get something to you. Do you understand?”
Severus would have loved to make it clear that he was not daft but he settled for nodding his understanding. As Severus thought, as soon as Harry left the house Kreacher popped in. The Potion Master dreaded telling the elf that he had lost his nightgown and glasses. It must have shown on his face because the creature looked up at him with a question in his eyes.
“I lost the nightgown and spectacles,” he confessed.
The little creature smiled up at him and snapped his fingers. The neatly folded nightgown with the glasses on top appeared on the bed. Severus was relieved to see them. Kreacher snapped his fingers again and his dreaded institutional robe appeared. He couldn’t wait to get to the glade so Kreacher popped them there and served him his breakfast once they arrived.
That night when Mrs. Weasley arrived laden with bags, they hurried to relieve her of her burden.
“Harry, when was the last time you had a decent dinner? Love, you are way too thin.”
Harry simply smiled at her basking in her attentions. She grabbed him by the cheeks and kissed his forehead. “You’re my son you know,” she whispered into his ears. He smiled and didn’t want to let go. He so needed the comforting hug. He had no idea that through their embrace she was paving the way for her next move. She let go with a shy smile and a very casual attitude she turned to Severus.
“Oh, Severus, I brought you some robes that I found. The kids must have left them behind when they moved out and I thought you could use them. They are in good shape and ask Harry, I can’t manage to throw anything away,” announced the clever witch as she shoved the parcel into his hands.
Severus had no idea what to do and was not raising his hands to grab the parcel.
“Severus, dear, I assure you they are not tattered. I washed them and pressed them and even made sure there were no tears on them,” she said, continuing to shove the package onto his hands.
“Snape, don’t be rude. Take the package and thank Mrs. Weasley for her hard work and kindness,” snapped the Guide.
Molly, who was in between the two men and with her back towards Harry and facing Severus, gave a triumphant smile.
“Let’s eat and then we can see how those look on you. Maybe I can take them in although I believe you and my Bill are more of less the same built.”
They ate and Severus was happy for the table that kept his private parts out of the matriarch’s vision. Then she asked him to go try on a robe. Severus came back in from the Kitchen and found Harry and Molly in the sitting room.
“You see, I knew it would be a good fit on you,” said Mrs. Weasley, smiling at Severus and then turning that satisfied smile at Harry with full force.
Harry gave her an approving smile although he was smiling at her contentment and not at her accomplishment.

When Severus went to his next appointment with Poppy he wore the best of the robes that Molly had given him. Harry could see that the Marked One’s disposition had changed with the robes but he allowed it knowing that he could use them as punishment. If the Death Eater got out of hand he could make him wear the dreaded institutional robe. Snape would behave if he wanted to keep the hand-me-downs.
“Severus, I see your guide finally decided to do his job and get you some decent robes. Although I believe he went shopping at a thrift shop,” said Poppy with a sideways glance at the Guide.
“Madame Pomfrey, Severus needs reading glasses,” announced Harry.
“Oh,”
Severus took out the pointy spectacles and showed them to the healer.
“What are these?” she asked.
“Rubbish,” declared Harry as he took out his wand and pointed it at Severus’ hands. Severus instinctively hid the spectacles behind his back.
“Snape, I already told you, I am getting you new glasses,” he warned.
“Severus, give those here and I will get you the frames that you have always liked,” said the healer stretching her hand out to him.
Severus simply moved his head from side to side showing his unwillingness to give up the glasses.
“Severus, Mr. Potter has agreed to get you new glasses, but I must remind you that your health benefits with Hogwarts do cover eye glasses.”
“Madam Pomfrey I do understand that, but Kreacher got these for me and I do not want him to think that his efforts were in vain,” cleared the Professor.
“Kreacher?”
“He is my deranged house elf,” explained Potter.
“He is not deranged. He is old and set in his ways, but he takes good care of you and your house,” dared the Marked Man.
“The two creatures have bonded,” offered Harry in a sarcastic tone.
“Yes we have,” said Severus raising his chin. Then he turned to Poppy, “I would appreciate it if you could fulfill my prescription using this frame.
“No, those frames will not be used. I refuse to have to look at you wearing those hideous things,” interjected Harry.
Severus bowed his head in defeat but Poppy raised his chin with a finger and smiled.
“I am sure I can please both of you. Now let’s check those eyes. Look straight ahead.”
After the eye examination and the routine checkup Madame Pomfrey left the examination room with the mentioned spectacles. When she came back she smiled at her former colleague.
“Here you go Severus,” handing him a black eyeglasses case.
Severus grabbed the case and took the glasses out. He could not hide his disappointment. Out came his usual frame but then the Matriarch smiled wickedly and said, “Why don’t you put them back in the case and turn the case around?”
Severus looked confused but after so many years of working with the witch he had learned that she usually had something up her sleeve. He placed the spectacles back in the case and flipped the case to the other side. The case went from a formal black to a loud flowery colored case. When he looked inside he smiled and thanked the Matriarch with a silent ‘thank you’. Harry walked towards him and pulled out the hideous spectacles. He arched his brow in a questioning look towards the witch.
“When you are around he can use his usual frame but when he is with his new found friend he can wear the ones gifted to him,” she smiled with satisfaction.
Harry decided to let it go.
“Did you finish the two books I gave you?”
“No, Madame, for lack of proper glasses, I have not been able to finish. I assure you I will get them back to you as soon as possible.”
“No hurry, I just wanted to know if I should be providing you with more books.”
“That will not be necessary. I have opened up my bookcases for his use,” said the Gryffindor surprising both the healer and the Marked One.

Soon came the Winter Holidays and Dennis came back to visit. Again it amazed Severus to see a smile on his Guide. They were having their hot coco and pastries when the floo flared up again. Harry granted the two men passage and found that they were trailed by their marked ones: Crab and Goyle.
Harry, Dennis and Snape could not believe their eyes. The two young men, once rosy and stout were now pale and emaciated. With their heads shaved they looked like something from a Holocaust Museum.
Dennis was about to run to their rescue but Harry held his arm and gave him a little nod. Dennis had to take a deep breath.
“Good evening, Mr. Potter, so kind of you to receive us on such short notice,” said one of the men that stepped through the floo.
Harry did not answer and waited for the men to get down to business. The men noticed Harry’s tight demeanor and decided to plunge on.
“Mr. Potter, I don’t know if you are aware of the fact that there has been some type of organization forming with the sole purpose of allowing the Mark Ones to go free.” Here the man paused to see Harry’s reaction. None was forthcoming.
“We Guides would like to know where the famous Savior of the Magical World stands on this issue,” said the second one also pausing to scrutinize Harry’s reaction.
Harry noticed that Dennis was growing impatient and had his fist curled in a fighting mode. Harry took one step as to outline the crossing line between the men and his guest.
“I can assure you that no one will be setting Severus Snape free. He has numerous crimes to pay and he will be paying for them,” said Harry with hatred pouring from each syllable.
The men looked at each other with a satisfied smile and it was at that moment when Harry caught Goyle mouthing the words ‘I am hungry’ to Snape. Harry took a deep breath than turned to the men again.
“Mr. Potter, we heard Shacklebolt talking about your computer and we were wondering if we could take a look at it?”
“That can be arranged but you will have to leave your marked ones here. I do not allow them anywhere near my books or computer,” said Harry rather sternly.
The men looked at each other and decided to comply so they took their wands and waved them over their charges. The two Slytherins where bound by a chain that had magically sprung up from the stoned floor. Then they followed their host into the library.
No sooner had the three Guides left the sitting room then Severus and Dennis had run to the boys’ aid.
“Kreacher!” called Severus.
The little creature popped in and had no need of a command to understand what was needed. He popped out and almost immediately popped in with two bowls of soup. Severus and Dennis each took one and started to feed the emaciated children. When Severus took the first spoonful to his former student he was confronted with a plea, “Please, kill me,” begged Goyle, “Please!” Severus felt his heart forget its rhythm.
“I cannot do it. Even if I had a wand; I could not do it,” said the Potions Master lowering his head.
“Eat, Gregory, you will feel better with food in your stomach,” advised Dennis.
Gregory Goyle took the advice and began to eat the food that Snape was offering him. Vincent Crab followed suit. Soon they had eaten and Dennis was scrambling to cast healing spells before the guides came back. When Gregory turned to be healed Dennis could see that Gregory was heavy with child. He had to be due anytime soon. Dennis looked up at Severus knowing eyes then turned back to Goyle.
“Gregory, you must be strong for your child. He will need you,” advised the young Gryffindor.
Severus saw with hurt in his chest that his former student was shedding tears. They heard the door of the library open and Harry spoke in an unnecessarily loud voice, “So that’s the internet. I really wouldn’t go anywhere near it sober if I were you.”
Severus and Dennis took it as a cue to step away from the pleading boys.
“Mr. Potter, I do believe I will be getting one of those muggle contraptions. I do understand the risk but I think it is so worth it,” one of the Guides was saying as they approached the sitting room.
Harry did not respond and simply walked to the fireplace, leading his unwanted guests to the exit. They waved their wands and freed their charges and left with the Slytherins in toe. As soon as they had left Dennis turned on Harry.
“Why didn’t you help them? They were your classmates. They are being abused and you just stood there not moving a finger to help them. What kind of a man are you?” demanded the younger man red with rage.
“Dennis I am done playing the savior. It is not my job…”
“NOT YOUR JOB! OH so now standing up for what is right is a suit you can shed when you are not in the mood?”
“Dennis, you are yelling,” warned the emerald-eyed wizard.
“Wow! I am impressed you noticed. Yet you didn’t have the foresight to see that your classmates were emaciated and HEAVY WITH CHILD!”
“Still yelling.”
Dennis looked at him with disbelief. Was this the Harry that his brother and he grew up admiring? All of a sudden the luster of Harry Potter was gone. He walked towards the Professor and said goodbye then left without saying a word to Harry.
***
Christmas Day brought the gruesome news of Goyle’s death. According to the Daily Profit, which Harry so ‘graciously’ allowed Severus to read, the Marked One had died trying to give birth without the assistance of a healer. His guide reported that he was away for the holidays and had no way of knowing that his charge was in labor. Severus went to the kitchen knelt in front of the hearth and wept for his late student.
On New Year’s Day, the second part of the injustice was posted in the periodical. Gregory’s baby had died. It was a small one paragraph statement on page fifteen. Harry missed it at first but he didn’t miss Kingsley storming through the floo and informing him of the death of an innocent child.
“Are you going to the wake?”
“The wake?”
“Yes, Harry the wake. We did not invite you to Gregory’s wake because we know where you stand on the Marked Ones but what is your excuse for not attending the wake of an innocent?”
“I didn’t say I wouldn’t go. You are placing words in my mouth,” warned the Gryffindor.
“So then you will come?”
Harry simply nodded then Kingsley turned to Severus and back at the kid.
“You will be bringing Severus along, right? He was after all Gregory’s head of house.”
“It isn’t Goyle’s vigil remember.”
But Kingsley did not appreciate Harry’s cheek and gave him a no nonsense glare.
“We will be there,” conceded the Gryffindor.
***
It seemed to Harry that everyone in the wizarding world had come to see the dead child. Why? He had no idea. The thought of looking down at the corps of a dead child sent chills through his body and he was determined to stay away from the corpse. He bumped into Dennis who had Colin’s camera out and was snapping pictures of the grieving wizards and witches. He went to snap a picture of Harry and Severus but the Chosen One raised his hand to cover the lens.
“Dennis, if you haven’t notice, I am not grieving.”
“That is as important in telling the story of this poor child as the people who are grieving.”
“What are you on about?”
“Do you have an idea how many people are oblivious to the fact that an innocent child was murdered?”
“Murdered? What are you on about? Murdered.”
“Come with me Harry.”
Harry followed Dennis with Severus on his tail to the front of the room and before he realized it he was face to face with the coffin that held Gregory’s baby. He looked like a little dried up prune. Severus looked down at the baby with glossy eyes.
“Do you know what he died of?” asked Dennis
Harry looked up and into the youngest Creevey’s eyes and accepted his ignorance.
“He starved to death.”
“What do you mean starved to death?”
“Harry his father died last week; how do you suppose he was going to get nourishment?”
“Bottle fed,” tried the Gryffindor.
“Harry, magical babies don’t take well to the bottle. In fact there have been such few that have taken to the bottle that they are recorded in the books of magical history. Harry when the books tell your story they always mentioned how it was a blessing that you had already been weaned.”
Dennis’s lecture was interrupted by Severus’ sprint to the nearest balcony door. He hung over the railing and heaved.
“Professor, what is wrong?” was the worried cry of Kingsley, Draco, Minerva and Hagrid.
Harry made his way through to the shaking man.
“He is alright,” he said in an attempt to calm the onlookers. Then he turned to Snape. “It will be alright Snape, when we get home I will explain my conditions, but you will be able to feed my child.”
“What do you mean, Potter?” asked a menacing McGonagall.
Harry turned to face a menacing group and decided it was time to leave.
“My charge is not feeling well. I will have to take him home. If you’ll excuse us,” he said as he guided Snape to the floo and disappeared within it.
***
When they arrived Severus still looked ill. Kreacher immediately popped and surveyed him. Then he popped out and in again with a cup of chamomile tea. Severus was so out of it that he didn’t even thank the elf. This told Kreacher how upset the Marked One was.
“Kreacher is taking Severus to the kitchen now,” announced the elf.
“No, Snape and I have some negotiating to do; leave.”
“Severus is being sick. Severus is needing Kreacher to take care of him,” insisted the elf.
“Kreacher!” warned the Gryffindor.
Severus could hear the menacing tone in Harry’s voice and decided to get Kreacher out of harm’s way.
“Kreacher, thank you for the tea, it really helped. I am fine now; you may leave. I will join you in the kitchen as soon as Sir and I are done here,” explained the still trembling man.
Kreacher gave Harry a look that told him in no uncertain terms how mad he was with his master and then turning his eyes off he popped out of the room.
“So it seems that my child will need you for his first year. I was trying to be considerate and spare you the trauma of getting too attached to my baby but it will not be possible. You will try by all means to keep my child from growing too attached to you. I don’t want him to suffer when on his first birthday I am putting you out on the street. Is that understood?”
“Yes, Sir,” was the simple response of the tall man. He knew that it would be heartbreaking to lose his child be it at birth or at the child’s first birthday. But he was grateful for the opportunity to nourish his child and make sure he was off to a healthy start in life. He could not close his eyes without revisiting Gregory’s dried up baby in its little coffin. He got on his knees and grabbed Harry’s hand and kissed it and thanked the man for his compassionate act.
A/N
This was hard for me to write. I was not able to give birth to my daughters the natural way and had to have a C-Section for both. And then to boot, I wasn’t able to breast feed them either. For years I felt guilty and less of a woman because I could not performed these acts. When I see my daughters healthy and happy I understand now that I had nothing to feel ashamed of. I hope no one is upset with the whole breast feeding issue. I really needed a way for Severus to stay with his child.
